Fitzsimons, Annette January 1999 (has links)
This thesis explores issues round gender and job segregation which emerged during a qualitative study of the different work experiences and attitudes of over fifty female and male computer programmers, in a number of computer software companies and in two internationally renowned manufacturing organizations. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the emergence of a sexual division of labour in this occupation and thus illustrate the process of segregation. It explores a qualitative approach to the study of vertical segregation in the computing industry amongst computer programmers. It uses Foucault's concept of discourse to suggest that a number of discourses are productive of gender segregation at work.

Gender Differences in the Early Career Experiences of Engineers in Canada

Osten, Victoria 19 June 2019 (has links)
Canada has an urgent need for more engineers to support its infrastructure, advance technology, and solve increasingly complex human, economic, and environmental problems. Women have often been identified as a resource who can provide new perspectives, solutions, and innovations. While women’s participation in engineering programs has increased over the last 50 years, their participation rate in the workforce has not, keeping engineering as a male-dominated occupation. Despite challenges, women graduates have entered the engineering workforce, but often they have not stayed. The purpose of this quantitative study is to explore the early career experiences of engineering graduates to identify patterns shaped by the graduates’ gender. Applying feminist lenses to the most recent data on Canadian graduates available at Statistics Canada and utilizing advanced quantitative methods, we study BEng graduates from Canadian universities. This study provides a broader understanding of the phenomenon of women’s underrepresentation in engineering and presents findings that can help retain more women in the occupation. Three samples of BEng graduates with over of 10,100 participants were included in this study to answer three main research questions: a) are there gender differences in the duration of job search and types of jobs these graduates obtained after graduation?; b) are there gender differences in job satisfaction among young engineers?; c) are there gender differences in the intention to look for another job once in a first engineering job? Themes and subthemes relevant to women’s underrepresentation in the occupation are found to help answer these questions. Recommendations for policy and future research are discussed.

Chronic/Life Threatening Illnesses From the Perspective of Latino Men

Sierra, Melissa 10 April 2006 (has links)
Much of the research on illness focuses on how people, particularly white men, cope with chronic/life threatening illnesses often adopting a "sick role" identity. For Latinos this type of identity transformation is complex as there is no place for dependency and passivity in traditional depictions of Latino masculinity. Latino men take pride in their manhood. As a result, they have trouble accepting their illness and the sick role. They do not tend to take their illness seriously, nor are they comfortable admitting to others the seriousness of their illness. My research focuses on how Latino men renegotiate a sense of masculinity that provides more variation in how they enact their roles as men. The four Latino men I interviewed are all battling chronic/life threatening illnesses. The concept of gender work provides a theoretical tool for analyzing the various identity transformations experienced during a long-term chronic/life illness. Although this concept has been typically applied to women and how they reenact a vision of femininity through daily work and interaction, it becomes useful for seeing how Latino men must renegotiate their masculinity which is one of the most fundamental parts of their senses of self. They redefine even the smallest tasks, ones typically defined as female oriented as a sense of masculine pride and accomplishment. Although these men's illnesses have meant major compromises in their traditional vision of masculinity, the men with whom I spoke demonstrate the creative and social processes involved in doing gender.

Nu ska vi inte längre ha prinsessklänningar fine! : En fallstudie om förskollärares förhållningssätt gällande genusarbete på förskolan i Sverige och Finland / Now we no longer have princess dresses fine! : A case study of preschool teachers' attitudes regarding existing gender work within the preschool system in Sweden and Finland

Miettinen, Hanna January 2018 (has links)
Gender in early childhood education is currently a discussed topic in the news and the subject also draws a lot of attention in the media in general. Different approaches to gender in preschools have brought both criticism and praise among custodians preschool teachers and within the community. Several kindergartens in Sweden have an explicit focus on gender work and some of them are also LBTQ-certified. The aim of this study is to investigate teachers’ attitudes to current gender work in preschools and to empirically examine how different perspectives on gender work in Sweden and Finland interact in preschools. The aim is also to discover alternative ways to work with gender and equality within a preschool framework. The study is based on semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. I have compared the Swedish preschool curriculum with the Finnish equivalent to get the views of the political governing documents that differ regarding gender and gender equality work in these two countries. (”Varhaiskasvatuksen suunnitelman perusteet” translated as "The fundamental features/basics of the plan for early childhood education", Finlands national curriculum). The theoretical framework used in the study is a gender perspective approach. The study points out that preschool teachers’ tensions differ to some degree, depending on the preschool and depending on preschool teachers' education, own values and enthusiasm for the subject. The study lifts the reflection about it as important. The study shows that preschool teachers in Sweden are aware of work with gender, but interprets the way to implement these goals through the curriculum objectives in a multifaceted way. Both the Finnish national curriculum and the Helsinki City applied version of the national curriculum ("Foundations of early childhood education") lift up many important learning objectives, but do not specifically raise transgender work or work against traditional gender patterns. The qualitative interviews conducted in Finland present highlights that a discussion debate about gender work is ongoing in the country where their curriculum is to be renewed by the year 2017.   The majority of the preschool teachers in both my interviews and questionnaires, in Sweden and Finland, pointed out that gender work has changed through the past decade. The majority of the preschool teachers also pointed seeing the individual, rather than the gender, as the most important in their work. A special feature of my study gives indication that a general discourse shift from compensatory pedagogic to norm critical pedagogy has taken place. Technique in activities was raised as a non-gender-coded material for children and digital tools in preschool as an entrance for more men in the teacher profession. What also has been found in my study is that gender is defined mainly depending on the context and that perverted approaches take time to change. My conclusion is that preschool teachers’ intention in my study, is not to limit children based on their gender. Their main intention and challenge is to continue offer children a multi-faceted activity based on children's interests and according to curriculum.
