Boys' self-esteem: the effect of co-educational schoolingBell, Kevin Phillip Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis examined the changes in self-esteem of adolescent boys going through the school transition from a single-sex to a co-educational environment. The study combined an initial quantitative study followed by an in-depth qualitative study. The quantitative study used the Coopersmith self esteem instrument to measure the self-esteem of boys in Years 7 and 8 in the last year of the all boys' school. The same instrument was used twelve months later on the same students in Years 8 and 9 after the school had undergone the transition to co-education. Analysis of the data indicated that the boys' overall self-esteem had dropped significantly. The second part of the study was a qualitative study to investigate more fully the effect of the transition on the boys at the school. This part of the study was based on data collected from interviews with twenty seven boys and nine staff, as well as various informal interviews and observations made by the author over the period 1998 to 2004. The qualitative study used the principles of grounded theory (Glasser & Strauss, 1967) to draw out the factors and related phenomena to crystallize why the boys' self-esteem may have been adversely affected. Through this process, three key factors emerged; Everybody's Looking at Me (reflecting social self-esteem), Girls Hold You Back a Step and Academic Stuff (both reflecting academic self-esteem). The qualitative study pointed to why the boys may have felt less favourably about themselves in the co-educational environment. These findings are discussed in detail in relation to the extant literature.

Perceived challenges in university branch campuses : a case study of five Western campuses in a GCC stateBaghdady, Ahmed Mahmoud Ibrahim January 2017 (has links)
This study explores the challenges perceived by senior officers in Western university branch campuses in a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) state and aims to provide insights into how leaders dealt with them. Thus, the study addresses four research questions. First, how campus senior officers perceive the challenges? Second, to what extent are these challenges a result of operating in a different cultural context? Third, how do senior officers deal with these challenges and maintain the quality of their home universities? Finally, how can the study findings be theorised to inform future policy and practice? As a form of transnational higher education, some of the GCC states have established branch campuses of leading Western universities to provide quality higher education to their citizens locally and build knowledge economies. Campus managers, usually from their home Western universities, face challenges related to the local cultural context. These challenges include the GCC state societal views of the campuses, the Western University approach to co-education, the GCC state development efforts to grow a Knowledge Economy through quality Western-style education, and national students’ academic preparation. This research was conducted as an exploratory qualitative multiple case study of five branch campuses. Data were collected through interviews with senior officers from the campuses and the host organization in the GCC state, and the five campuses' annual reports. Data were analysed through open and axial coding. Then thematic analysis was used to identify themes from the data. The study revealed that the major challenges for campus officers are recruiting academically strong students from the pool of citizens, and understanding the local culture and adjusting aspects of the curriculum to fit the local context especially for campuses that offer social sciences and arts programmes. Campus officers engaged in efforts to make school students more qualified for admission by the campuses, and some leaders made adjustments to the curriculum to better suit their students’ abilities.

A presente dissertação visa compreender como se constitui a relação entre adolescentes, na condição de netos e seus respectivos avós no âmbito familiar. As pessoas idosas constituem hoje um segmento da sociedade que vem adquirindo mais visibilidade em função da maior longevidade. Ao mesmo tempo, as formas de ser e estar em família na contemporaneidade vem apresentando constantes modificações. Nesse sentido, evidencia-se na atualidade uma pluralidade de configurações familiares, como as famílias de idosos e as famílias com idosos. Outra característica marcante dessa diversidade é a família longeva traduzindo-se como um fenômeno novo e apresentando a coexistência de várias gerações. Dentro desse cenário procura-se entender como se constituem a identidade e como se relacionam dois grupos etários: a adolescência e a velhice. As teorias específicas sobre a constituição da identidade geracional trazem contribuições importantes para a compreensão da relação intergeracional. Considerando o convívio entre avós e netos como benéfico, estuda-se quais são as transmissões de um geração a outra e de que modo ocorrem tais contribuições. Desta maneira, a presente pesquisa analisa o contato entre gerações enquanto uma possibilidade de co-educação através de um estudo qualitativo. Esse trabalho foi realizado junto a alunos adolescentes de uma escola pública do município de São Leopoldo e junto aos seus avós, residentes na mesma localidade. A coleta de dados sucedeu-se através de um questionário e do registro de diários dos jovens, bem como por intermédio de entrevistas dos idosos acerca de sua relação com o outro. Trata-se de oito jovens com idades entre 15 e 18 anos e de 12 idosos dos 62 aos 78 anos. Os dados foram analisados através da construção de categorias analíticas sob o enfoque do método hermenêutico ou interpretativo. A partir dos resultados ficou assinalado que o convívio intergeracional mediado pelas relações familiares possibilita uma coeducação, visto que existe uma troca de conhecimentos, de afetividade, de valores, de cuidados, evidenciando a reciprocidade entre as gerações. Ao mesmo tempo, essa relação não desconsidera a influência dos discursos acerca das identidades geracionais, discursos esses, geralmente marcados por estereótipos. / The present dissertation seeks to understand how the relationship among adolescents is constituted, in the grandchildren's condition and their respective grandparents in the family's ambit. The elderly people constitute now a society's segment that is acquiring more visibility in function of the largest longevity. At the same time, the contemporaneousness forms of being in family come presenting constant modifications. In that sense, it’s evidenced at the present time, a plurality of family configurations, as the elderly' families and the families with elderly people. Another outstanding characteristic of that diversity is the longevous family expressing itself as a new phenomenon and presenting the coexistence of several generations. Inside of this scenery it’s looked to understand how the identity is constituted and how two age groups are related : the adolescence and the oldness. The specific theories about the constitution of the geracional identity bring important contributions to the understanding of the intergeracional relationship. Considering the conviviality between grandparents and grandchildren as beneficial, it’s studied which are the transmissions of a generation to another one and how occurs such contributions. In this way, the present research analyzes the contact between generations while a coeducation possibility through a qualitative study. This work was accomplished with adolescent students of a public school from São Leopoldo City, and with their grandparents, residents in the same place.The collection of data was succeeded through a questionnaire and the registration of adolescents' diaries, as well as through interviews with elderly people concerning its relation with the other. educational context that sponsonred the implatação of the co-education and of the mixed teaching in the school space of the country sergipana. / O presente estudo tem como meta construir uma história da Co-educação e do Ensino Misto em Sergipe, onde a referida forma pedagógica sofreu algumas restrições por parte da
sociedade. O marco temporal do trabalho vai de 1842 a 1889. A partir das fontes, tentamos mostrar as polêmicas que causaram a implantação da Co-educação e das Escolas Mistas na Província, e as representações que a sociedade da época tinham em relação a tais práticas. Para entendermos toda a problemática que envolveu a implantação da referida forma pedagógica, fez-se necessário um breve olhar sobre a Instrução Pública no período do Império. Além de verificar como a Igreja Católica se posicionou em relação à mistura de
meninos e meninas no mesmo espaço escolar, lançamos, também, o olhar sobre a representação que se tinha do masculino e do feminino na Instrução Pública. A partir dos
dados coletados, reconstruímos alguns fragmentos da História da Educação na Província; fragmentos esses que nos possibilitaram entender o contexto educacional que patrocinou a implantação da Co-educação e do Ensino Misto no espaço escolar da Província sergipana.
