Forest decline in South Central Ethiopia : Extent, history and process

This study presents the extent, history and process of forest decline in Awassa watershed, south central Ethiopia. By combining different data sources such as satellite images, social surveys and historical documents, forest decline is described quantitatively and qualitatively and the main causes behind this process are identified. Forest decline in the study area is interpreted as the result of a combination of socio-political changes, economic activities, population growth, cultural patterns and agricultural developments while local conflicts over resources also play an important role. The findings of this study reveal forest decline to be a continuous process associated with spatial fragmentation and location specific losses. The recent increase in production of the cash crop khat has made a significant impact on the forest through several mechanisms: it relocates the agricultural/forest frontier; it causes intrusion and permanent settlement within forests; and fragments remaining forest. The analysis of human-spatial boundaries indicates unsystematic management of the natural forests by several administrative units. As a result, multiple claims have been made on the forests simultaneously as weak control and accountability conditions have negatively affected forest management. The main conclusions are as follows: Forest decline in the study area has a long history, spanning at least one century. The causes are identifiable as both temporally spaced individual events as well as chains of events. These interact with each other at different levels and scales as well as with the geographical properties of the study area. Land users’ rationale in weighing the advantages between keeping and replacing the forest is affected by economic gain, market conditions and transport facilities. Multiple claims to the forest land and weak accountability contribute to inefficient management, which accelerates forest decline.

This thesis examines Janet Flanner, an expatriate writer whose fiction and journalism have been essential to the development of American literary modernism in that her work, taken together, comprises a remarkable autobiographical document which records her own unique experience of the period while simultaneously contributing to its particular aesthetic mission. Although recent discussions have opened debate as to how a variety of discourses can be read as autobiographical, Flanner’s fifty years worth of cultural, political, and personal observation requires an analysis which incorporates traditional and contemporary theories concerning life-writing. Essentially, autobiographical scholarship must continue to push the boundaries of analysis, focusing on the interactions and reactions between the outer world and the inner self. This thesis, therefore, will situate Janet Flanner as an important writer whose experience among the modernist literary community in Europe informs, and is recorded in, her writing. / v, 93 leaves ; 29 cm.

Women Murder Women: Case Studies in Theatre and Film

This thesis looks at two cases of women who murdered women - the Papin sisters (Le Mans, 1933) and Parker-Hulme (Christchurch, 1954) - and considers their diverse representations in theatre and film, paying particular attention to Jean Genet’s play The Maids (1947), Peter Jackson’s film Heavenly Creatures (1994) and Peter Falkenberg’s film Remake (2007), in which I played a part. What happens when two women (sisters, girl friends) commit violent acts together - not against a man, or a child, but against another woman, a mother or (as in the case of the Papin sisters) against women symbolically standing in place of the mother? How are these two cases - the Papin sisters and Parker-Hulme - presented in historical documents, reinterpreted in political, psychoanalytic and feminist theories, and represented in theatre and film? How might these works of theatre and film, in particular, be seen to explain - or exploit - these cases for an audience? How is the relationship between prurience - the peeping at women doing something bad - and the use of these cases to produce social commentary and/or art, better understood by looking at these objects of fascination ourselves? My thesis explores how these cases continue to interest and inspire artists and intellectuals, as well as the general public - both because they can be seen to violate fundamental social taboos against mother-murder and incest, and because of the challenge they pose for representation in theatre or film.

Ils conçoivent tous les deux l’écriture comme le théâtre, sur le même plan que la vie, et partagent en outre la même conviction que la littérature, comme toute forme d’art, peut quelque chose pour nous. Malgré leurs nombreux points de contact biographiques, poétiques et éthiques, leurs œuvres n’ont jamais fait l’objet d’un rapprochement exclusif, une étonnante lacune que l’introduction substantielle de cette étude se donne pour tâche d’éclairer. En fait, si les œuvres d’Artaud et de Genet sont souvent comparées, c’est invariablement de façon limitée : brièvement, par le biais d’un tiers auteur et au plan du théâtre. Or toute leur écriture est théâtrale : c’est la prémisse sur laquelle se base ce travail qui constitue, donc, la première étude comparative approfondie de leurs œuvres. Dans un premier temps, nous étudions la conception du théâtre d’Artaud et de Genet dans la perspective de la tragédie qu’ils privilégient, parce qu’ils estiment primordiale la reprise vivante de l’œuvre par chacun de nous. They both also conceived of writing as theatre, on the same level of tragedy as life, and shared the same conviction that literature, like all forms of art, has the power to do something for us. Despite their many points of contact in terms of biography, poetics, and ethics, their works have never been the object of an exclusive comparative study, a surprising omission that the substantial introduction of this study sets out to elucidate. In fact, if the works of Artaud and Genet are often compared, it is inevitably in a limited fashion: briefly, via a third author, and in terms of the theatre. Yet all their writing is theatrical: it is the premise on which this, the first full-length comparative study of their works, is based. Firstly, I study Artaud and Genet’s conception of theatre from the perspective of the tragic which they both privilege, because above all they value the reanimation of their work performed by the reader. In fact, I engage with Genet and Artaud as both writers and readers, analysing the singular way in which each takes great figures from mythology, literature, and history, in order to introduce them, irrespective of their provenance, into their own works. To demonstrate this work of "reconfiguration" in Artaud and Genet, which is at once biographical, aesthetic, and ethical, I analyse their treatment of Antigone, in "Antigone chez les Français" and "Journal du voleur". Secondly, I examine how Artaud and Genet defy the dialectic of judgement ruling the univocal reading which they oppose. In part, I focus on their defiance in the texts that they composed in 1948 for the same radio broadcast, "Pour en finir avec le jugement de dieu" and "L’Enfant criminel" (both of which were censored). And in part I focus on the defiance they practice by way of a revelation that I call a writing of fainting—which has nothing of the sublime in it, which in fact only retains the structure of the interruption from the Hegelian Aufhebung, that is to say the coup de theatre that it introduces in the deliberation of consciousness. I further analyse the commentaries of Artaud on his drawings and numerous scenes of fainting in Genet’s works. Thirdly, I put forward an ethical way of approaching the troubling terms "cruelty" and "treason" that Artaud and Genet have bequeathed us. More than being notions, I propose, these are methods aiming towards a new mode of reading. By the intervention of these anti-conceptual concepts Artaud and Genet invite us to live in the same way they write and read, that is to say in the same way they "see" the multiplicities of reality. As an exemplification, I advance a close reading of Artaud’s "Théâtre et son double" in relation to Genet’s "La Sentence"—a text whose recent publication confirms the pertinence of the comparative approach taken in this study.

Spatio-temporal ecology of the rusty-spotted genet, Genetta maculata, in Telperion Nature Reserve (Mpumalanga, South Africa)

Very little is known about the spatio-temporal ecology of the rusty-spotted genet, Genetta maculata. With this study I aimed to describe the activity patterns, resting site use and spatial ecology of G. maculata in Telperion Nature Reserve. I particularly looked at the activity profile and the activity period. I wanted to determine the spatial distribution of resting sites, the number of sites used per individual as well as the index of resting site reuse. I also calculated the distance between resting sites on consecutive days and tested for differences between sexes and seasons. I determined the size of home ranges, as well as that of core areas and compared space use between sexes and seasons as well as vegetation types. A total of six males and nine females were trapped, radio-collared and tracked during continuous night and daytime sessions between September 2015 and August 2016. Rusty-spotted genets were primarily nocturnal (nocturnality index: 0.84) and therefore made use of the darkness for cover when hunting. Overall, male effective activity duration (586 ± 172 min) was greater than for females (564 ± 175 min) possibly because they search for females to mate with as well as due to their larger body size. Seasonal changes in activity were evident – specifically in winter – and were probably a function of both food availability and temperature. Areas with a denser vegetation structure seemed to be more suitable for rusty-spotted genet resting sites. Neither the number of resting sites nor the reuse rate of these resting sites differed between sexes or seasons. The inter-resting site distance on consecutive days was higher for males (938 ± 848 m) than females (707 ± 661 m). This was possibly caused by males travelling larger distances when searching for females to mate with. The inter-resting site distance was higher during autumn, likely due to the decrease in food availability, which made it necessary for genets to increase their hunting efforts. However, a similar increase in hunting effort was not evident during winter as genets decreased their overall activity, possibly in order to avoid colder temperatures. No sexual or seasonal differences in home range size were found. This was attributed to a well-spread and consistent availability of food sources. Core areas only covered on average 7% of the total individual home range which further supports the hypothesis that food was readily available. Both intra- and intersexual home range overlaps were recorded. This was not unusual for carnivores and due to a combination of reproductive and social actions. Home ranges mainly included bushveld vegetation (78%) rather than grassland as these areas provided better cover and likely more abundant food sources. As this was the first exhaustive study of its kind on this species over a full annual cycle, the information gathered is important for the development of conservation strategies for this species, but also for other Genetta species in the rest of Africa. / College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences / M.
