The Gorda Escarpment's rise and fall : synthesis of exploration seismology, sampling efforts, micropaleontology, and radiometric dating

Potter, Susan M. 28 October 2002 (has links)
The Gorda Escarpment (40.4° N and from 126° W to 124.7° W) is a topographic high which is the eastern portion of the Mendocino Transform Fault. The Vizcaino Block is the anomalously shallow portion of the Pacific plate immediately south of the Gorda Escarpment. Sediments of the Vizcaino Block record a history of uplift and subsidence for itself and the Gorda Escarpment. Previous work on the Mendocino Ridge (the bathymetric expression of the Mendocino Transform Fault west of 126° W, where there is little sediment overlying basement) indicated that the ridge had been above sea level at some time in the past (Krause et al., 1964; Fisk et al., 1993). Assuming that the two bathymetric features have undergone the same response to tectonic forces, this study aims to constrain the timing of uplift and subsidence for the Gorda Escarpment, Vizcaino Block, and Mendocino Ridge by using the geological record of sediments of the Vizcaino Block. ODP Site 1022 drilling penetrated 379 meters into the Vizcaino Block's sediments. Age and lithologic constraints from the recovered cores, along with in-situ sampling by ROV and gravity cores, were integrated with a network of 25 seismic reflection lines. From these it is evident that uplift of the Gorda Escarpment and Mendocino Ridge began before 6 Ma, and was at a maximum at 2.7 Ma. Ocean circulation was likely altered by the uplift of the Gorda Escarpment and Mendocino Ridge. In turn, the altered ocean circulation regime may have had an impact on the regional climate in the Pliocene. From 2.7 Ma until the present the Gorda Escarpment, the Vizcaino Block and the Mendocino Ridge have been subsiding. / Graduation date: 2003

Crustal structure and seismicity of the Gorda Ridge

Solano-Borrego, Ariel E. 28 September 1984 (has links)
We have determined the seismic crustal structure of the northern part of the Gorda Ridge using signals generated by explosive charges and recorded on Ocean Bottom Seismometers. The shot pattern forms two parallel lines, one on the east flank and the other along the median valley. Inversion of the travel time data and synthetic modelling of the signals resulted in two compressional velocity structures: the model for the flank indicates a 1.6 km thick upper crust characterized by high velocity gradients and 3.6 km thick lower crust characterized by a low gradient. A sharp mantle transition exists at 5.2 km depth with an upper mantle velocity of 7.6 km/sec. The median valley velocity model has a thicker high gradient upper crust of 3.0 km and a lower crust of at least 3.5 km thickness. No upper mantle velocities were detected beneath the median valley. We have also monitored the seismicity of the ridge during 15 days with two arrays of OBS and detected ~4 events/hour. Epicentral coordinates were determined for 140 earthquakes. Most of them lie within the median valley and show spatial clustering. Intraplate seismicity was also detected in the Gorda Basin with three of the earthquakes big enough to be reported by land stations. They suggest that the Gorda Plate is presently undergoing deformation. Good control over the focal depth was possible for ~80 earthquakes occurring on the ridge, and there the seismic activity appears to be pervasive throughout the upper 20 km suggesting that the the brittle lithosphere is at least this thick. From the earthquake shear-wave data we have obtained a value of 1.73 for the Vp/Vs ratio. Moments of the well constrained events derived from the spectra of the waveforms are of the order 10²⁰ dyne-cm and suggest an average fault width of 300 m. The refraction data is consistent with the earthquake results, and all the evidence suggests that a large magma chamber underlying the axis of spreading does not presently exist at shallow depths. / Graduation date:1985

Microseismicity on the Gorda Ridge

Solano-Borrego, Ariel E. 23 February 1982 (has links)
The seismicity at the northern section of the Gorda Ridge has been studied with Ocean Bottom Seismographs. Nearly one hundred earthquakes were located with RMS travel time residuals less than 0.5 seconds. Most of these events lie within or near the array and they are probably associated with the dynamics of crustal formation which creates the observed bench-like features in the Gorda Ridge. An average of 5 microtremors per hour can be detected in the median valley with a lower activity outside of the ridge. Considerable clustering in time can be seen and it is typical of a main-shock sequence with the largest shock at or very near the beginning followed by a progressive decay in number. Clustering was spatial as well as temporal and the records indicate that they have similar mechanisms. A brittle zone of 18 km thickness at 42°N and 13 km at 42.5°N was found implying any possible magma chamber must be at greater depth. These thicknesses are larger than those observed in the Mid Atlantic ridge and in the East Pacific Rise. They may be explained by the depression of isotherms due to the heat lost by the contact of the ridge with the old and cold plates across the Blanco and the Mendocino Fracture Zones. Comparison of earthquakes locations using only OBS with those obtained from land stations indicate a major P-delay for the Gorda Basin. The seismic activity appears to decrease markedly to the south of 42°N. This drop in activity indicates that the southern part of the ridge is more stable than the northern part. This decrease in activity is not consistent with a southward propagating rift if we accept that higher seismicity levels are expected at the tip of the propagating ridge segments. / Graduation date: 1982

Steve Blackwell: A Florida Folk Musician

Haymans, Brian 01 January 2010 (has links)
This study investigates the life of Steve Blackwell (1947-2006), a Florida folk singer/songwriter from Punta Gorda, FL, located where the Peace River meets the Gulf of Mexico. The study examines his biographical history, his performance career, musical output, and the impact he and his music had on the surrounding community. The first part of the study documents Blackwell's history and the major events that shaped his life while, at the same time, describing what kind of person Steve Blackwell was. The second part of the study examines Blackwell's career as a musical performer, the bands he played with, how those bands came to be or changed over time, what types of music they performed, and any albums he recorded. The third part of the paper looks at Blackwell as a songwriter. How Blackwell decided on his lyrical topics, his musical style, and compositional process are discussed. The final part of the study examines the impact of Blackwell and his music. Consideration is given to Steve Blackwell's closest social networks, as well as to the social implications he, his music, and his networking had on his local community. Research for this study was done through immersion mixed with a close study of Steve Blackwell's personal documents. A number of personal interviews and correspondences were conducted with Steve Blackwell's family, friends, former band members, and a number of other unrelated patrons. Primary sources for this study include a number of Blackwell's own documents, such as his letters, journal entries, sketches, working copies of songs, and recording sessions, etc., which were made available with the gracious permission of the Blackwell family. Few secondary sources were found, save for a few magazine and newspaper articles. After these materials were gathered, a portrait of Steve Blackwell emerged. Evidence was found that supports the idea that Steve Blackwell's music was not stylistically unique, although competently made and enjoyed by a wide audience. Nevertheless, he was special for the community by what he was able to accomplish through his music and extroverted personality. This is not a definitive summation of Steve Blackwell's life, but rather a starting point for any further research on Blackwell or any research in the significance of local musicians for social communities.

Troncoso Araya, Tamara 12 September 2012 (has links)

This work verifies how gender is related to the statements of public policies of rural development, through the implementation of dams, in Cabo Verde. It considers that issues involving gender relations, as well as those related to the modernization of agriculture, have driven the creation of public policies and a variety of programs and activities that are being included within these two headings. For an analysis of these policies, this dissertation is supported by a case study - Figueira Gorda Dam, in the Municipality of Santa Cruz, on the Island of Santiago, from January to April 2017, from an ethnográgico approach. Firstly, the plans / programs related to the agricultural sector and gender equality, followed by an ethnography, were systematized and analyzed to understand the dynamics of the enterprise, the interviews, the field diary and the technical information conversations used women, farmers and public entities. And from these outlined approaches, by characterizing the public policies focused on rural development, it was possible to show that since the formulation, they present Cabo Verde as a country of "few resources" and with a strong dependence of "international aid and financing", with programs / plans that are born from an international agenda, in the name of sustainable development, focusing on the environmental and economic sector. And in the case of the Figueira Gorda Dam, the experience of this model, evidence a (re) configuration of the social space, that reinforced the gender inequalities and the non participation of women in "modern" agriculture, thus conserving the modern / colonial.

Relação das concentrações de adiponectina, leptina e zinco-α-2-glicoproteína no cordão umbilical com a composição corporal de crianças nos quatro primeiros meses de vida (OU) Relação das concentrações de adiponectina, leptina e zinco-α-2-glicoproteína no cordão umbilical com a composição corporal de lactentes nos 4 primeiros meses de vida / Concentrations of adiponectin, leptin and zinc-α-2- glycoprotein in the umbilical cord blood and body composition of infants in the first 4 months of life

Colovati, Veronica Luiza Vale Euclydes 12 August 2014 (has links)
Obesity, characterized by excess adipose tissue (AT), is an epidemic disease with increasing prevalence since childhood. The the first months of life are considered critical to human development because of the relationship with long-lasting effects on the physiology of the organism. The TA formation starts in fetal stage and secretes numerous cytokines related to obesity. Stand out in this context: adiponectin is associated with insulin sensitivity; leptin by its interaction with the energy expenditure and zinc-α-glycoprotein due to their modulating effects of the expansion of the TA. Knowing the importance of the action of these cytokines and the relevance of the first months of life on the health of an individual, the aim of this cohort study was to analyze the concentrations of adiponectin, leptin and ZAG cord and relate to body composition of children from birth to 4 months of life. Cytokines were assayed in the cord blood by ELISA. Body composition was assessed by the PEA POD ® (Infant Body Composition, Cosmed, USA) monthly. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) for mean comparisons of qualitative variables. A multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between the cytokines and body composition. Adiponectin was inversely associated with the percentage of fat in the 1st month of life in infants not being breast fed. Leptin was positively associated with the percentage of fat mass at birth for females (R ² = 0.29), but this association did not remain after the first month of life. In the final model stratified by sex, ZAG was the only variable that explained analyzed the percentage of fat in 3 (R ² = 0.21) and 4 months (R ² = 0.14) for females. The results of this study reinforce the positive influence of the role of leptin in umbilical cord blood for the percentage of fat at birth and the role of ZAG with negative influence on the percentage of fat in the third and fourth months of life.

Análise de correspondência entre composição corporal, obesidade e hiperlipidemia em cães / Correspondence analysis between body composition, obesity and hyperlipidemia in dogs

Zaneli, Eduardo Braghirolli 12 February 2015 (has links)
Todavia, a elevação destes metabólitos foi moderada e não se situou em faixa de reconhecido risco à saúde / The harmful effects of obesity on dog health are quite mentioned in the literature, but little investigated. The term hyperlipidemia refers to the increase of lipid and/or fat concentration (cholesterol, triglycerides or both) in serum. These disorders are relatively common in dogs and may happen as a result of a primary defect in metabolism of lipoproteins or as a consequence of a subjacent systemic disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of obese dogs that present alterations on cholesterol and triglycerides serum concentration, and to study the correlation of these disorders with obesity degree, sex, age and castration. Thirty obese dogs with body condition score (BCS) equal or superior to 8 (on a scale between one to nine, and nine representing severe obesity) and a control group of ten dogs with BCS of 5 were included. Animals with BCS of 9 (n=21 dogs) presented a frequency of 52.4% (n=11 dogs) of hypercholesterolemia and 33.3% (n=7) of hypertriglyceridemia. Dogs with BCS of 8 (n=9) presented a frequency of 22,2% (n=2) of hypercholesterolemia and 33,3% (n=3) of hypertriglyceridemia. These alterations also presented correspondence with female sex, age between 4 and 7 years and castration. However, the cholesterol and triglycerides increases were moderate, and not remained within the range of recognized health risk
