Object Synchronization and Security for Mobile Communications DevicesBorison, Torbjorn January 2001 (has links)
The main objective of this master’s thesis project was to investigate and find solutions to the problem of how to combine the SyncML synchronisation specification with object security and thus protection of personal information, such as contacts and calendar entries in mobile devices. SyncML is a new synchronisation specification agreed upon by major device developers (Ericsson, Palm, Motorola, etc.) and the major synchronisation server developers (Starfish, Puma, fusionOne, etc.). It is independent of transport (HTTP, WSP, or OBEX) platform, operating system, and application and simplifies synchronisation of personal information between dissimilar SyncML supportive devices. SyncML compliant devices are fully capable of synchronising information with a third party operated Internet based server and a desktop computer. This allows us to access, up-date and maintain information independent of Intranets or geographical position. However, synchronising and storing confidential personal information on an third party operated Internet based server entails weaknesses in our personal information security. Even if transport and storage security are used, how secure is the server where this information is stored since this server has the highest probability of being attacked. Can we really trust that an employee or other person with valid appropriated administrators access to the storage facility with the appropriate knowledge, working together with the third party server operator, won’t try to access our stored information? To prevent this, the personal information’s confidentiality must be guaranteed before the information leaves the device. When synchronising and exchanging personal information, the information is often marked according to a specific format. The three de-facto standard PIM formats are: (1) vCard (contact information), (2) vCalendar, and (3) iCalendar (calendar and scheduling information). These formats divide the personal information into properties. Each property is assigned to contain a small piece of the personal information entry (e.g. a telephone number, an e-mail address, the time when the calendar event begins, etc.). Furthermore to preserve the interoperability between different devices given by SyncML, authorised recipients must automatically be able to reverse the encryption process and decrypt the encrypted property value. Therefore general cryptographic formats are used (e.g. CMS, PGP and the newly developed XML Encryption). They add information needed by the recipients (e.g. algorithm used, padding method used on the plain text, etc.), encrypt the plaintext into cipher text, and decrypt the cipher text into plain text given the correct key.

Analysis of a wireless cell with multiple service classes under an aggregate sharing schemeAwan, Irfan U., Kouvatsos, Demetres D., Al-Begain, Khalid January 2002 (has links)
An analytic framework is devised for the performance modelling and evaluation of a wireless Global System for Mobile Telecommunication (GSM) cell with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) supporting both multiple class voice and data services, respectively, under an aggregate sharing scheme (ASS). The investigation focuses on the study of a proposed GE/GE/c/N/PR/CBS queueing system with c (¿1) servers, finite capacity, N (¿c), generalised exponential (GE) GSM/GPRS interarrival and service times under pre-emptive resume (PR) priority rule and complete buffer sharing (CBS) scheme. The principle of maximum entropy (ME) is used t ocharacterise new closed form expressions for the state and blocking probabilities, subject to appropriate GE-type queueing theoretic constraints per class. Typical numerical examples are included to validate the ME solution against simulation at 95% confidence intervals and study the effect of external GMS/GPRS bursty traffic upon the performance of the cell.

Performance Modelling of GPRS with Bursty Multi-class Traffic.Kouvatsos, Demetres D., Awan, Irfan U., Al-Begain, Khalid January 2003 (has links)
No / An analytic framework is devised, based on the principle of maximum entropy (ME), for the performance modelling and evaluation of a wireless GSM/GPRS cell supporting bursty multiple class traffic of voice calls and data packets under complete partitioning (CPS), partial sharing (PSS) and aggregate sharing (ASS) traffic handling schemes. Three distinct open queueing network models (QNMS) under CPS, PSS and ASS, respectively, are described, subject to external compound Poisson traffic processes and generalised exponential (GE) transmission times under a repetitive service blocking mechanism and a complete buffer sharing management rule. Each QNM generally consists of three building block stations, namely a loss system with GSM/GPRS traffic and a system of access and transfer finite capacity queues in tandem dealing with GPRS traffic under head-of-line and discriminatory processor sharing scheduling disciplines, respectively. The analytic methodology is illustrated by focusing on the performance study of the GE-type tandem queueing system for GPRS under a CPS. An ME product-form approximation is characterised leading into a decomposition of the tandem system into individual queues and closed-form ME expressions for state and blocking probabilities are presented. Typical numerical examples are included to validate the ME solutions against simulation and study the effect of external GPRS bursty traffic upon the performance of the cell. Moreover, an overview of recent extensions of the work towards the analysis of a GE-type multiple server finite capacity queue with preemptive resume priorities and its implications towards the performance modelling and evaluation of GSM/GPRS cells with PSS and ASS are included. / ,

Real Time Positioning; Construction and implementation of a GPS-Communicator. / Realtidspositionering; Utveckling av en GPS-kommunikator.Darnell, Christian, Wilczoch, Christian January 2002 (has links)
The first half of the Masters thesis is the result of a survey made on the behalf of the Swedish company KORDAB International AB. The survey includes an overview of different positioning systems and some wireless communication techniques available on the market today. Positioning systems discussed are GPS, DGPS, AGPS and GSM positioning. Mobile Internet connections through mobile phones and communication through radio modems are mentioned and described as examples of wireless communication techniques. Examples of techniques described are HSCSD, GPRS, UMTS and MOBITEX. KORDAB is in the starting blocks to implement a real time positioning feature into their own technical information system GEOSECMA. This survey will give them a base which will help them to decide on which system to use for this feature. The second half of the thesis includes parts concerning a prototype made to exemplify how KORDAB could implement the real time positioning feature into GEOSECMA. The NMEA 0183 protocol, reference systems and transformation are described to give the necessary background knowledge for the construction and functionality of the prototype. The prototype is a GPS-communicator made as an interface between a GPS-receiver and GEOSECMA and its functionality is also described in this second half of the thesis. Feasible applications are also discussed to show the possibilities real time positioning gives. One application discussed is “Zoom and Auto highlighting”. This application is designed to help user of GEOSECMA to zoom in the map and highlighting the nearest object at current location.
