For A Coming Theatre

Garcin-Marrou, Flore 13 December 2011 (has links)
Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari are not famous for having a deep, enduring interest in theatre. This thesis first develops historical and biographical elements to reveal that the notion of their indifference to theatre is cruelly inexact: the former repeatedly mentions drama and constructively criticises it, while the latter turns out to be the author of dramas which are yet unpublished, and whose theatrical characteristics are revealed here. In a more conceptual part, I then offer the mapping of a heterogeneous web of notions that both philosophers abide by: theatre is used in the creation of new concepts; it is at the service of a new wording of philosophy. The Theatre of Thought, the Method of Dramatisation, the Theatre of Cruelty, the Schizo Theatre, the Minor Theatre and the Theatre through the process of Becoming-Other are the signposts of A Coming Theatre that our research sets out to explore. Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy offers a reaction to the crisis of theatre. While Deleuze takes theatre on new lines of flight and pushes it on the verge of pure abstraction, Félix Guattari forges a Postdramatic Theatre. My thesis includes indexes of all the theatrical vocabulary and characters to be found in the works of both philosophers, as well as interviews by some of their close artist friends.

Politique et la micropolitique de la langue / Politics and micropolitics of language

Blinov, Evgeny 15 September 2014 (has links)
The general aim of this thesis is to develop a project of transversal research in the domain of social sciences that we designate as political philosophy of language by appealing to the concepts of the contemporary French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. The accomplishment of this task demands a theoretical and historical contextualization of language policy in France and Soviet Union in the revolutionary period with special attention to the importance attached to this field by the main politic-makers of bath countries. According to the central hypothesis of this project, the essential part of a revolution is the discovery of "molecular tissue" around the new canters of power that makes possible the mobilization of forces that will produce a political, axiological as well as epistemological rupture with an Old Regime. Comparative research of the language policies in France and the Soviet Union permits to reveal their impact on the republican "nation-building" which opens the so-called "political modernity" period and on the construction of the cultures "proletarian in content, national in form" in the Soviet republics. The latter is often used as the base for the contemporary politics of identity, especially concerning the minorities. Such research also opens a debate on the possibility of a "revolution in language", decidedly repudiated, by Saussure, and an analysis that makes possible an elaboration of a new typology of the vehicular functions of language.

For so, a theoretical articulation will be drawn among the writings of Theodor W. Adorno – frankfurtian theorist – and Félix Guattari- theorist and institutional analyst, who acts in several domains: psychiatry, anthropology and politics. Such thinkers based their studies on subjectivity, distinctive moments of the capitalist system of production and consumption. In such articulation, we take the concepts of “individualization” and “singularity” developed by Adorno and Guattari, respectively. Therewith, we aim, by opposing the ideas of the authors, to increase the understanding over the process of constitution of contemporary subjectivity, as well as to perceive the existence of “individual” and/or “singularized” existence. It was developed a theoretical research ruled in bibliographical review of the respective authors’ writings as well as of other speakers who made possible the enrichment of understanding concerning the object of study. To reach the proposed goal, we followed some steps: in the first chapter we exposed a possible intersection between Adorno and Guattari, departing from the philosophical tendency of the ontology of the present; in the following chapter, we discussed Adorno’s theory and the process of individuation; then we went through the Guatarri’s theory and the singularization movement; at last, we looked up articulations and tried to catch a glimpse into alliances between the two theorists. By the end of the research we emphasized the need to consider each of the theories in accordance with the Theoretical-Philosophical tradition to which it is affiliated. Therefore, it is made impossible a logical articulation among what the two of them have as important for the understanding of our object. Nevertheless, it is departing from the tension and contradiction existing among them that we can reach a better understanding concerning the processes of subjectivation in the present days, which is not that about which Adorno’s reflexions would be devoted to neither the same proclaimed by Guattari.

Olsson Nyhammar, Carlo January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to read Bruno Schulz’s The Cinnamon Shops through the theoretical framework of Deleuze and Guattari, focusing on the relation between territorialization, deterritorialization and reterritorialization. This is investigated through examples from the The Cinnamon Shops, focusing on different aspects of how territorialization is portrayed in Bruno Schulz’s corpus. The goal is to show how the stories of Bruno Schulz are structured around various forms of territorializations, be it the home, the family shop or the town in itself. However, those territories are almost always negated through deterritorializing acts. In this act we get to face something new, something temporary and fragile, which in itself creates the essential crack or leakage in the text. Those acts of deterritorialization can’t be allowed to continue undisturbed but must be shut down through various forms of reterritorialization. This form of reading is only possible when the text is seen as a rhizomatic structure, with no clear center or periphery. It is brought forward how each of those texts are segmented in various manners, either binary or linear, which affects how the territorializing acts can be perceived.

Between the education and the plane of thought of Deleuze & Guattari: a life...

Benedetti, Sandra Cristina Gorni 17 May 2007 (has links)
Through nine different atmospheres, distributed in three chapters, it was outlined a theoretical cartography of some studies addressed to Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari\'s philosophy of multiplicities, from the following question: what happens between education and the plane of thought of these authors? The Previous atmospheres and the first chapter are on the building of the object of this research from its roaming to the option for such a plane of thought, and not any other one. The second chapter deals with some concepts that allow us to think school education while in the absence of the subject of education, traditionally considered the purpose and the ultimate end of the pedagogical task; thus the reason for the option for Deleuze\'s pedagogical concept. The last chapter argues which is the place of identity as psychic fiction that school has helped us to build since its origins, as well as it discuss the coming-to-be of education through the analysis of the effects of disruption, resistance and e creation developed in 11 essays that face the pedagogical tradition with new weapons. Furnished with the concepts of Deleuze & Guattari\'s plane of thought, and with other ones created from them, the authors make an experimentation that tears apart the conceptions of representation and of recognition connected with the subject\'s idea of education, unveiling the artificialities of production and corruption of the subjectivities by capitalism. The last atmosphere, which embraces Deleuzes\' final essay: Immanence: a life..., gathers the resounding effects picked up by this minor part of the present educational thought, which wishes to promote chances of the school to become privileged locus of the composing of desiring forces able to enlarge the potency to say yes to other forms of existence; forms willing, if necessary, to create \"war machines\" used to disintegrating everything that hinders life, be it at school, or outside it.

Düker, Ronald 10 January 2008 (has links)
The study examines the frontier myth, a narration that is of fundamental importance for the culture of the United States. The path from East to West, which includes the conquering and cultivation of the continent, forms on various levels a mythological narration: in literary and political history as well as in the entertainment culture that arose in the middle of the nineteenth century through penny novels and Wild West shows. The study’s main thematic areas focus on geography, technology, and transportation. In Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, which narrates the history of the frontier as the battle between civilization and nature (i.e., between modern Americans and Native Americans), the cowboy as personified by the show’s impresario William F. Cody takes center stage. American show business, which was literally underway, thus corresponded with the story/history it told. Several tours to Europe additionally succeeded in transporting the myth from the new to the old world. In particular, this myth-transportation emphasizes a difference between temporally vertical and spatially horizontal planes, i.e., between the static order of the European royal court (family tree) and the dynamically conceptualized American democracy founded on fraternity (moving frontier). The study discusses this model through Mark Twain’s novel A Yankee from Connecticut on King Arthur’s Court and Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. The latter novel evinces how the phantasmagoric energy of the frontier myth even persists when the continent has been conquered and the Pacific Ocean reached – persists as the circular movement around the globe itself. An imperial model thus comes to light that sees the USA at the center of a new world order. The title of this study – “As if the world first became round in America” – comes from Deleuze and Guattari’s Mille Plateaux and its psycho-global implications offers a guiding theory for the work. The extent to which the foundational, mythical narration of the Wild West bears world-political consequences is demonstrated in the last part of the study, which investigates the deployment of the Hollywood director and Western specialist John Ford in the foreign secret service (OSS) during the Second World War.

Mats O, Svensson January 2015 (has links)
In Peter Weiss debut Från ö till ö (1947) the ‘I’ travels from island to island as a castaway. The island here can signify, or work as a synecdoche for exile and the feeling of isolation that exile often induces. But the movement from island to island also implies a restless state: Peter Weiss shifting from painting to writing to filmmaking and theatre, from German to Swedish and then back to German. The years during exile and the years that followed the exile until his breakthrough in Germany with Schatten des körpers des Kütchens (1960), Abschied von den Eltern (1961) and Fluchtpunkt (1962), were the formative years of Peter Weiss authorship. In Sweden he abandoned a Hesse-influenced new-romanticism – an aesthetical and political dead-end in the 1940s – and oriented towards the Swedish modernists – fyrtiotalisterna – discovered psychoanalysis and became politically “aware”. These happenings – or machines as this essay likes to view them – all influenced and produced Weiss Swedish prose which is this essay’s main focus. Following Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari this essay understands Weiss Swedish authorship as a minor authorship. As Franz Kafka was in the German language, Peter Weiss was a stranger in Swedish and in Sweden, a “foreign bird” as one critic calls him. As a minor writer he is a political writer, the political realities are connected to him, his half-Jewish body is intertwined in the (bio)political realities of mid-century Germany; and those realities are visible in his prose, even if he himself, or his contemporaries, see him as an unpolitical author. Therefore there is no unpolitical and political period in the œuvre of Peter Weiss. Instead there are different flows and movements, from the political, from the production of the psychoanalytic-, modernist- and romantic-machine among others. There are lines of flights, deterritorialization and reterritorialization. This essay aims to follow some of these lines in the Swedish prose of Peter Weiss.

Abstract: The object of my research is to think about education from the idea of an aesthetic of existence. This is an aesthetic approach and micropolitics of education. For the development of this approach, besides the very notion of aesthetics of existence, I use some concepts in the works of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari as my main search intercessors. For these authors a micropolitical analysis always lies at the crossroads between different modes of apprehension of a problem. In this sense , the field of research is situated at the crossroads of several sources, which use various orders of materials , such as official documents , historical experiences of educational practices, aesthetic analyzes (art theory), own experiences and other educators, various research approaches in education, film clips, etc. By using this material, my aim is to establish some traits, or pose some notes, which we may think about education from the idea of an aesthetics of existence. / Doutorado / Ensino e Práticas Culturais / Doutor em Educação

Brophy, Deligny a Guattari: Avantgarda coby začleňování a rozvrstvování / Brophy, Deligny, and Guattari: the Avant-Garde as Subsumption and Stratification

Sabitova, Valeriya January 2021 (has links)
The thesis considers Felix Guattati's notion of transversality, Fernand Deligny anti-pedagody, and Brigid Brophy's novel In Transit (1969) to argue that the terms of subsumption and stratification have the potential to address the conceptual apparatus of the avant-garde to avoid certain foreclosures concerned with the rhetoric of revolutionary transformation traditionally associated both with vanguardism in a politico-ideological sense and with the avant-garde as an aesthetic and critical project. To unlock the critical potential of the terms of subsumption and stratification in regard to the avant-garde, the theoretical framework of Félix Guattari and Fernand Deligny developed as a result of their clinical experience with psychotic and autistic patients, respectively, is used to foreground how subsumption and stratification are inherent in the notions of transversality, group subjectivity, assemblage of enunciation, signification, schizoanalysis, tracing, and mapping. Using these, the thesis argues that in order to address the theoretical foreclosures associated with the notion of the avant-garde, the latter should be viewed in the light of the complementary operations of subsumption and stratification. To substantiate the argument, the thesis juxtaposes Félix Guattari's notion of transversality,...
