The refinement of a booklet on stroke care at home

Botha, J. H. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScMedSc (Rehabilitation))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / Stroke is the second commonest cause of mortality worldwide and remains a leading cause of adult physical disability. It is estimated that sixty percent of South African stroke survivors require assistance with at least one activity of daily living. This burden is predominantly on the shoulders of mostly untrained caregivers. The process of enabling caregivers to make choices conducive to their own health as well as the health of the stroke survivors is multidimensional. One of the cornerstones of this process is the provision of information. In 1995, the Centre for Rehabilitation Studies of the University of Stellenbosch started to develop a training package for stroke care at home. The training takes the form of an interactive workshop and a booklet with practical information. The aim of this study was to refine and pilot this booklet for implementation with the training. The study found that existing guidelines to evaluate the appropriateness of written material for developing communities (measured by Hugo’s grading model), were inadequate. Consequently, a new checklist, based on twenty existing checklists, was compiled. This list, as well as the Suitability Assessment of Material (SAM), was used to evaluate the booklet and make recommendations for a pre-pilot refinement. Even though this checklist has not been validated, it revealed similar results to the SAM when applied to the booklet. After cosultation with the authors, improvements were effected to the booklet The booklet was tested with four samples of the target audience. The functional literacy of the participants was determined using a standardised literacy test. A fifth sample completed a questionnaire on their preference between the pre- and postrefined booklet. Experts in the field of rehabilitation and graphic design also commented on the booklet. This study confirmed the need of stroke survivors and their caregivers for written health information. The refined booklet was found to be an appropriate tool to address the needs of the target audience. The participants perceived the booklet as useful and comprehensible and the readability level was shown to correspond with the tested literacy level of the samples. However, there is a need for printed material on topics related to stroke not currently covered in the booklet, e.g. spasticity. This study showed that the checklist could be used to tailor written health information that is preferred by the target audience. It confirmed that the testing of printed material with stakeholders could expose additional gaps after applying the checklist. Recommendations for further improvements were made based on the comments of the participants. It is foreseen that the new checklist could be a valuable tool for developing future written health material. Finally, it is recommended that an interdisciplinary team that includes a graphic designer be involvement from the planning stages.

School District Bond Campaigns: Strategies That Ensure Successful Outcomes

Florence, Linda L. 23 May 2014 (has links)
When the polls close and the ballots are counted, the best sound is the roar of ecstatic cheering from delighted but exhausted campaign committee members. A bond campaign takes an inordinate amount of work, but the results are worth the effort when the campaign is managed in a systematic way. Districts can be successful bond recipients when they effectively market their schools to gain the support of their constituents. Public schools across the U.S. are in dire need of major repairs, remodeling, and rebuilding to meet the educational needs of students. Unfortunately, passing a school bond election is entrusted to school superintendents and other district leaders, who are often inexperienced and ill-prepared and have neither the time nor inclination to focus on tasks that take them far from their primary purpose of teaching and learning. Attaining voter support in a school bond election requires a thorough understanding of school and community issues. The literature review focuses on communication theory and research to garner support of school district's internal and external stakeholders. Communication is instrumental in passage of a construction bond election. This dissertation is theoretically grounded in problem-based learning and the research and development process. The tested product is a handbook for superintendents or other district-level administrators on strategies and practices that assist in passing a construction bond election. In the Preliminary and Main field tests, superintendents and other district leaders used the handbook in a workshop. Survey results provided summative data to assess the efficacy of the handbook and the workshop. Formative results also provided rich information to improve and revise the handbook and workshop.

Att bli miljömedveten : Perspektiv på miljöhandbokens textvärld

Adenling, Elinor January 2007 (has links)
This dissertation is the study of environmental consciousness as a discursive educational project. The empirical material consist of 18 environmental handbooks that have been published in Sweden during the years 1976-2007 of which 13 appeared between 1988 and 1995. The research work uses the basic assumptions of discourse analysis, namely that language is an important factor in the construction and development of social norms and values. Three areas recieve close attention: questions relating to the form and content of the handbooks, questions relating to the social circumstances in which the handbooks were produced and questions relating to the overall educational significance of the handbooks. In the first instance, the handbooks are examined in the light of three different contextual stories. They can be read as part of wider discussions of environmentally-concsious life-styles, as a development of earlier Swedish discussions about domesticity, health, thrift and consumption, and, finally they can be read as an expression of a narrative about a dominant aspect of modernity – science. The second part of the research work comprises an examination of the handbooks in terms of their audience and educational purpose. What kind of individual is to be shaped by these handbooks? What is anticipated as the desired or ideal environmentalist? Discourse analysis suggests that, collectively, the handbooks project an image of somone who displays qualities of motivation, investigation and judgement. They should be motivated to begin a process of change in their lives, to encourage others to do the same, and to adopt the environmental problems as their own personal problems. The second quality pursued in the handbooks is of someone who should take an active stance towards the environment as a pervasive element in their way of life. They should, therefore, adopt an investigative attitude to the surrounding world, cultivate certain cognitive properties such as watchfulness, thoughtfulness and being suspicious, and constantly ask questions about their surroundings with a view to understanding how actions in their private world has an effect on the wider world. And thirdly, the ideal environmentalist citizen should be someone who demonstrates judgement in balancing polarities and resolving the claims of different standpoints. They should give attention to separating right from wrong, wisdom from madness and, above all, to finding a way of linking their own efforts to what is worth striving for and what is worth avoiding or neglecting. In summary, the subjects identified in the handbooks are expected to avoid extreme positions, to place their own expectations about sustainability on a suitable level, and to be prepared for failure and feelings of guilt. The final part of the investigation – interpreting the wider significance of the handbooks – uses a pluralistic model of analysis which takes its departure from three concepts – ecological modernisation, governmentality and the risk society. Using these orientations, the extent of the discursive educational project of the environmental handbooks is highlighted. If the handbooks are regarded as modernist prescriptions, they are texts which highlights slow and careful change taking place within the present power structure of society. If they are regarded as texts that offer a governmentality prescription, they can be read as texts which promote the transformation of everyday micropractices. And if they are regarded as prescriptions for a risk society, they are texts which enable readers to come to terms with confusion and powerlessness in a complex and risky social context. One main result is that the environmental handbooks display interesting similarities, worthy of futher exploration, supported by a broadened empirical base.

Mais precisamente, há relações subjetivas e sócio-históricas implicadas na produção do prazer e da poeticidade cômicas, o que faz dele um elemento importante no processo de ensino-aprendizagem de uma língua / Abstract: Anchored in the perspective of the Discourse Analysis, in the interface with the Freud?s Psychoanalyze and Deconstruction, our aim, with this study, was to analyze the way of approaching of humor by Handbooks of English as a Foreign Language (FL). This research allowed us to comprehend the way of treatment of humor and the conception of language teaching which emerges from the didactic and pedagogical activities based on comics and from their position (localization) in the handbooks of English selected for this study. The corpus of this research is composed by six Handbooks of English as a FL, adopted by English teachers who work at public schools comprising Campinas and region. Our basic assumption was that, in spite of being composed by many different kinds of texts which belong to different discourses, the Handbooks of English, especially their kind of approaching, have the tendency of becoming the texts homogenous. So, we developed the hypothesis that, in the didactic-pedagogical context of language teaching, more exactly in Handbooks of English as a FL, there is a strong tendency of erasing of the effects of humor and their conditions of production. From the results of our analyses, we could observe that the way how the Handbooks approach humor tend to eliminate the joke, the ambiguity, the double meaning, resulting, consequently, in the erasure of the cultural and discursive aspects which constitute the complex field of the comicity. We consider that the kind of approaching of humor found in the Handbooks of English present serious implications in the learning and teaching of English as a FL and, consequently, in the constitution of the subject?s identity: a) the erasure of creativity, imagination and pleasure; b) the absence of the playful component and, therefore, of the pleasure, of the involvement which every kind of learning involves (that one which spans the body and changes it) should presuppose and, finally, c) the erasure of the political aspects which span the field of comicity. That erasure reinforces the mistaken idea that humor is a simple play which does not demand an intellectual exercise, totally different of the position assumed in this study. The field of the comicity entails social, historical and cultural relations. More specifically, there are subjective and social-historical relations entailed in the production of the pleasure and of the comics poeticity, what makes it an important element for the teaching-learning of a language / Doutorado / Lingua Estrangeira / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada

Abstract: Engineering is seen today as a synonym of Innovation, in special for providing technological solutions that affect not only daily work and entertainment, but education as well. Project portfolio management of multimedia production and use emerges today as a challenge both for the enrichment of traditional classroom based teaching and for distance education offering. In this way, this thesis intends to answer the following question: "Which are the fundamental aspects to be considered in the management of projects on educational multimedia production and use?" A possible solution for the central question mentioned above is expressed by the following proposition: "A scientifically studied set of management tools and techniques may be identified as a central element to be considered in the management of projects of multimedia production and/or use, in this way increasing the success odds of educational projects." As a consequence, this research presents a proposal of a project management model for digital content production and use. The model, the methodology and the implementation will be named EduPMO, an abbreviation of "Educational Project Management Office". Therefore, the model, the methodology and the implementation should be understood as related but independent entities. / Doutorado / Eletrônica, Microeletrônica e Optoeletrônica / Doutor em Engenharia Elétrica
