The relationship between alcohol and sexual agency for young women in university

Cusack, Erin Elizabeth 01 June 2017 (has links)
A link between binge drinking, negative sexual health outcomes, and sexual victimization among university populations is well established in the research literature (Messman-Moore et al., 2013; PHAC, 2016; Smith et al., 2009). Despite these known risks, young people often hold beliefs that alcohol consumption can enhance or facilitate their sexual experiences, however, less is known about the role of alcohol in young women’s consensual sexual experiences. In this qualitative study, I used a feminist perspective to explore young women’s perceptions and experiences of the role of alcohol in their sexual agency – the ability to communicate and fulfill their sexual desires and boundaries – and the social norms that influence this relationship. I collected data through interviews with 14 young university women between the ages of 19 and 25 who identified as heterosexual, lesbian, bisexual, or queer. Participants identified heteronormative sexuality norms that influence the role of alcohol in their sexual agency, namely the prioritization of women’s sexual inexperience, female sexual fidelity, and women’s attractiveness. Participants perceived that alcohol influenced their sexual agency at an individual and social level. In their individual experiences, participants discussed the dis-inhibitory effects of alcohol as a “tool” to alleviate feelings of shame associated with sexual expression and negative body image. At a social level, participants used alcohol as a means to deflect social stigma associated sexual expression as they could “blame the alcohol” as their motivation for engaging in sexual activity. These findings suggest that young women’s motivations for drinking may be linked to sexuality norms that discourage young women’s sexual agency, which could be relevant to consider in health promotion and harm reduction efforts.

Definition of the term "peer-work" in the Czech Republic with a focus on drug users.

Matějková, Radka January 2014 (has links)
Abroad is the method of peer work dealing with the involvement of drug users (active and retired) extended far more than in the Czech Republic. Information and data are available mainly from foreign sources, where peer work has been continuing a tradition. In the Czech Republic, this method is still not so much used, as well as is the lack of Czech professional literature on the subject. Method of peer work in the Czech Republic has not been comprehensively mapped, described and evaluated. They are organizations dealing with the involvement and employment of drug users, which usually draw infromation from foreign sources and work with their data. There is no comprehensive overview, providing information and data in this area in the Czech Republic. The target of this work is to map the use of peer work in the Czech Republic in the area of drug services. Within the sub-targets are the structure and functioning of each peer programs studying. The practical part is realized by an empirical research (research orientation) in order to get a general overview of the analysis of the problem in the form of quantitative research. Condições do lugar: Relações entre saúde e ambiente para pessoas que usam crack no bairro da Luz, especificamente na região denominada cracolândia / Place Condition: Relations between health and environment for people who use crack in the Luz neighborhood, specifically in the region called cracolândia.

Costa, Thiago Godoi Calil da 17 September 2015 (has links)
R. Luso-Brasileira, 4 - Jardim Estoril IV, Bauru - SP, 17016-230 The Luz district emerges as a prime area in the center of São Paulo in the late nineteenth century. With the fall of the coffee economy and the city\'s expansion to more valued regions, the neighborhood lived significant changes in its economic and social dynamics. The deactivation of the Bus Terminal in 1982 intensified the process of urban and social degradation that has accompanied the history of the neighborhood. The \'arrival of crack\' - mixture of cocaine base paste, water and baking soda (and other unknown substances) - in the early 1990s, set up new local dynamics and contributed to several government actions that brought significant environmental changes for locals and other people that regularly attend the place. In this context, the crack is a substance which has a social use in a daily life for the population of the region. The relationship of consumption and trade of this substance have aggravated a territorialized considered social and urban disqualification in the neighborhood, which associated with the prohibitionist policy on drugs, had perverse effects. This condition enhances the strong stigma in society associated with this space, which leads to a consequent exclusion of those who are there. For Environmental Health, physical and social deterioration of this environment can provide conditions of low quality of life and facilitate the health problems of occurrence beyond a condition of use of a substance. In this sense, this project aims to investigate the relationship between health and environment (context) in the daily life of people who use crack in cracolândia, central region of São Paulo. From this approach, this study aims to bring information that can support more efficient public policies.

Silva, Mabel Dias Jansen da January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation is inserted in the field of Gender and Cultural Studies, approaching the poststructuralist perspective of analysis. It investigates the places of the subject/user of psychoactive substances and gender crossings (re)produced under the National Policy of Harm Reduction, a public policy concerned in recognizing the choices of the users of psychoactive substances (PAS) who require some sort of care, so reaching the boundaries of health protection and social citizenship and social rights. The empirical material consists of normative documents of the policy and its consequences. Cultural analysis, in combination with documentary research, was used for data analysis, considering the concepts of subject position, rule, power and gender. The policy documents and its consequences were taken as cultural and educational artifacts that (re)produce and convey biomedical, psychological, moral and juridical discourses involved in the production of subjects and care practices in the field of mental health addressed to the use of PAS. The analysis allowed to describe, debate and discuss the meanings of terms such as user, addicted, drug, substance, autonomy, among others used in a naturalized way in the policy, whose multiplicity, conflictuality and historicity was explored from this analytical movement. The undertaken analyses contribute to denaturalize certain notions usually used in the texts of the care proposals for those users. The (in)definition of discussed terms allowed to perceive the apparent meaning overlaps of some terms such as user/addicted to explore distinctions between them; it was also possible observe some linear relations, such as use/consumption = addiction, which can lead the individual to avoid looking for healthcare services, such as the Centers of Psychosocial Care (CAPS), even when he/she needs those services, fearing being named as addicted, since this nomination causes different effects in his/her life. From the gender point of view, there seem to be some clues in the (in)definition of these terms, showing that, to some extent, distinctions produced by the genre are not considered, perhaps because there are still some difficulties in associating the woman to the use/abuse of PAS, although some studies show increasing use among women. Thus, a sensitive reading to gender approaches in the policy allowed to go "finding" clues regarding the naturalization of the relationship between the use of PAS and masculinity, and regarding a femininity that is not addicted. In this sense, this research intended denaturalize this relationship and show some silences regarding the female/male representations still active in the culture that contribute to hinder the design of a care demand.

Community Pharmacists and Harm Reduction: Evidence and Opportunities

Hagemeier, Nicholas E., Dowling, Karilynn 03 April 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Harm reduction is a concept that has gained momentum as it relates to prevention of negative consequences of drug use. Some harm reduction approaches, such as naloxone provision, have garnered significant support, whereas others, such as providing access to clean syringes, are the exception as opposed the rule. Evidence suggests there is significant variation in harm reduction behaviors among providers, including community pharmacists. Community pharmacies are one of the most accessible points for healthcare; approximately 90% of U.S. residents live within five miles of a pharmacy. Therefore, pharmacies have a great opportunity to promote and engage their communities in harm reduction approaches. This session will examine evidence-based harm reduction approaches that can be employed in community pharmacies. The presenters will use their syringe dispensing research conducted across three states to describe the current harm reduction climate in community pharmacies. During this interactive session, participants will discuss scenarios in which they are encouraged to evaluate their own attitudes and beliefs toward non-Rx syringe sales, naloxone dispensing and other harm reduction strategies while taking a look at the impact of state level policies on these approaches. The session will be targeted to practicing pharmacists, coalition leaders and harm reduction stakeholders.

Harm Reduction : - En ny dimension inom den restriktiva narkotikapolitiken?

Nordström, Maria, Stenman Lång, Martina January 2008 (has links)

Huang, Ling-huang 23 August 2007 (has links)
Drug abusers in Taiwan are infected with HIV(Human Immunodeficiency Virus) seriously day by day in recent years. In view of this, since Aug.1,2005, C.D.C.(Center for Disease Control, R.O.C.(Taiwan)) has promoted Harm Reduction Program for drug abuse patients in control of spurting question of drug abuse/AIDS overflowing. We adopt the analysis frame of social marketing in this research to inspect the promotion of Harm Reduction Program at present government. Through questionnaire survey, we in death understand their contact situation and views of Harm Reduction Program from the mass population and the stakeholders(drug abusers). We visit 311 effective samples of opium-smoking prisoners(as drug group) to find out 84.9%(258) respondents has participated the declaration of health education of Harm Reduction Program during serving a sentence, 91.6%(282) has received information through newspaper, TV, broadcast, and brochure during serving a sentence, 89%(277) has got impression on C.D.C. slogans of ¡§Injecting drug, infecting AIDS¡¨, and the measure of offering needle and syringes exchange, methadone maintenance treatment, health education, and transferring/consulting service has accorded with the demand of drug abusers. In addition, we visit 289 effective samples of the public (as general group) to find out only 12.5% (36 ) respondents has participated the declaration of health education of Harm Reduction Program during in the past year, 53.5%(153) has received information through newspaper, TV, broadcast, and brochure during in the past year, and 55%(159) has got impression on C.D.C. slogans of ¡§Injecting drug, infecting AIDS¡¨. Both the public and opium-smoking prisoners have affirmed the promotion of Harm Reduction Program, and most has identified with the importance of the execution of Harm Reduction Program. We also find out 34%(99) respondents of the public has regarded famous actor as anti-drug spokesman can bring his attention and identification mostly, and moreover, 41%(128) respondents of opium-smoking prisoners has believed the declaration of acting as an example to others by the drug abstinence successfully is convincing most.
