Subsurface stratigraphic analysis of Devonian strata from the Rio do Peixe Basin, newly recognized by palynological studies, has resulted in the identification of two new lithostratigraphic units assembled in the Santa Helena Group. The Pil?es Formation, the lower unit, is composed mainly of dark mudstones and medium-tovery fine-grained sandstones, with minor conglomerates and breccias. The Triunfo Formation, the upper unit, comprises whitish grey, kaolinitic, coarse-grained to conglomeratic, cross stratified sandstones and conglomerates, with interbedded mudstones and fine-grained sandstones. These units were characterized using cores, sidewall and cuttings samples, conventional logs and image log, from three wells drilled by PETROBRAS, and 3D seismic data. The Pil?es Formation is interpreted as prodeltaic facies, with lesser associated subaqueous talus, debrite and sandy turbidite lobe facies, distal part of fandelta and braided fluviodeltaic facies of Triunfo Formation. The Santa Helena Group corresponds to the Lower Devonian tectono-sequence deposited in a NW-SE-trending graben during a transgressiveregressive cycle. With 343 meters of thickness (isochore) in well 1-PIL-1-PB (Pil?es 1), this sequence has a non-conformity at the lower boundary and its upper boundary is an unconformity with the Lower Cretaceous tectono-sequence (Rio do Peixe Group), that represents a hiatus of about 265 million years. Ignimbrites and coignimbrite breccias (Po?o da Jurema volcanic breccia), related to an unknown pyroclastic volcanic event, were recognized at the northern margin of the Sousa halfgraben. Evidence from well data suggests that this event is coeval with the Devonian graben filling. The present study indicates a polyhistorical tectono-volcanosedimentary evolution of the basin. This lithostratigraphic update brings new perspectives for geological research in the Rio do Peixe Basin, as well as in other inland basins of the Northeastern of Brazil. The results of the research also contribute to the kwnoledge of the Borborema Province and western Gondwana paleogeography during the Early Devonian.

Extant benthic Foraminifera from two bays along the SW coast of South Africa, with a comment about their use as indicators of pollution

Toefy, Rashieda January 2010 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The results of the multivariate analyses suggest that most of the variation in the composition of the samples was of an intra-sample nature, illustrating large scale patchiness in foraminiferal distribution. There were, however, definite differences between communities around Robben Island and in St Helena Bay, and least variation was found between the control and pipeline sites, and between the stations of each site. When the trace metal concentrations and the percentage nitrogen increased, the richness, diversity and abundance of foraminifera tended to decrease. Sediment grain size positively affected abundance but negatively affected diversity and richness. In both areas mean grain size did not, however, appear to play a very large role in influencing diversity. Cadmium, copper, chromium, the percentage nitrogen and the mean grain size were identified as the most important variables influencing the community structure by the BIOENV BEST routine in PRIMER. The trace metals and percentage nitrogen only had negative effects on the diversity and abundance as well as on the abundance of the dominant genera, whereas the mean grain size had variable effects. / South Africa

Levande men obetydlig : En analys av kosmisk skräck i H.P. Lovecrafts författarskap / Alive but Insignificant : An Analysis of Cosmic Horror in H.P. Lovecraft's Writing

Jidah, Abraham January 2024 (has links)
My essay is called “Alive but Insignificant: An Analysis of Cosmic Horror in H.P. Lovecraft’s Writing”. Howard Phillips Lovecraft has written many short stories surrounding the idea of “cosmic horror”. In this essay I seek to investigate how this cosmic horror works and what connections it has to occultism by analyzing six of his short stories: The Call of Cthulhu, The Colour Out of Space, The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, The Haunter of The Dark, The Nameless City and Nyarlathotep. In the essay I use sources that show Lovecraft’s biography and letters to build an idea of how he might have been thinking when writing and in the theory segment I bring up the sublime to show what “cosmic horror” means when analyzing Lovecraft. I analyze the stories based on three categories: The Fear of Cosmos, The Fear of The Occult and The Fear of The Abyss.   In the second to last segment called discussion I got through everything that I have found through my analysis: Within The Fear of Cosmos, I analyze The Colour Out of Space, Nyarlathotep and The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath to find that the fear comes from the idea that there is a force somewhere out in space that can destroy humanity on a whim and humans have no way of stopping it. Within The Fear of The Occult, I analyze the Cthulhucult in The Call of Cthulhu by bringing up Lovecraft’s connections to occultism and potential connections to Helena Blavatsky. To enforce the connection between Lovecraft and Blavatsky I use a quote from Haunter of The Dark that presents a book that Blavatsky has ties to. There I find that the fear comes from the idea that a malevolent monster is whispering in the ears of people, encouraging them to commit horrific acts and to abandon their humanity in its name. In The Fear of The Abyss, I analyze The Nameless City and The Call of Cthulhu to find that the fear comes from the idea that there is a powerful and horrifying monster sleeping somewhere under the earth and the ocean, waiting for the right time to awaken and come out of hiding, all while humanity is unaware of it.   In the very last segment I go through some comments regarding the essay, where I share my biggest problems with Lovecraft and why certain parts of the essay was cut out.

[pt] HELENA IGNEZ - GUERREIRA NÔMADE HIPERSENSÍVEL: UM ENSAIO TEÓRICO BIOGRÁFICO SOBRE A DISSOLUÇÃO IDENTITÁRIA COMO ARMA NA MÁQUINA DE GUERRA / [en] HELENA IGNEZ - HYPERSENSITIVE NOMAD WARRIOR: A THEORETICAL ESSAY BIOGRAPHY ON THE DISSOLUTION OF IDENTITY AS A WEAPON IN THE WAR MACHINE

SAMANTHA RIBEIRO DE OLIVEIRA 21 May 2021 (has links)
[en] The dissertation portrays the initial period of the artistic and emotional trajectory of actress Helena Ignez, from her childhood and youth, in the first half of the 20th century in Salvador, until the start of the 1970s in Rio de Janeiro, focusing on the character Angela Carne e Osso [Angela Flesh and Bone], the protagonist of the movie the A Mulher de Todos [Everyone s Woman] (1969). It adopts a narrative structured by micro-plateaux which interlace and are driven by the actress s voice in the first person, merged with the historical setting and theoretical reflection, centered on the concepts of war machine and body hypersensitivity. In this multiple and multifaceted construction, diffuse identity marks are seen, where life and character agencying aspects point to our desire for dialogue with contemporaneity. Going through her training at the drama school of the Federal University of Bahia, the artistic and emotional relationship with filmmaker Glauber Rocha, her activity as a professional actress in theater and movies, and her connection with the director Rogério Sganzerla, during the filming of O Bandido da Luz Vermelha [Red Light Bandit] (1968), the work ends with her role in the movie A Mulher de Todos, a cinematic experiment considered unique even today for its innovation in representing a deviant female. As an effect of this film, the dissertation touches on the seven feature films in which the actress played the leading role, shortly after and under the influence of A Mulher de Todos, in collaboration with Rogério Sganzerla and Júlio Bressane, in the fictional production company Belair (1970).

The veil of Egypt : the constitution of the individual and the afterlife in Ancient Egypt as portrayed in The Secret Doctrine of H.P. Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society

Bester, Dewald 11 1900 (has links)
The Secret Doctrine is the magnum opus of H.P. Blavatsky and one of the foundation texts of the Theosophical Society. It represents her attempt to appropriate authority in a wide variety of fields, including, science, religion, and philosophy. This study examines H.P. Blavatsky’s engagement with Ancient Egypt in relation to two specific themes, the constitution of the individual and the afterlife, as they are portrayed in this work. It locates Theosophy in its historical context, the late nineteenth century, in relation to various fields of knowledge. It reviews the sources that H.P. Blavatsky drew on in her work and discusses the various interpretive techniques she employed to insert Theosophical content into various world religions. Finally, it contrasts the Theosophical presentation of Ancient Egypt in The Secret Doctrine with that of mainstream modern Egyptology. The fundamental disconnect which is revealed highlights the challenges that the Theosophical perspective faces. / Religious Studies & Arabic / M. A. (Religious Studies)

It is from the analyses of two work of Machado de Assis, first period they are called Helena e Iaiá Garcia. We will try to analyze in addition to the main characters mentioned also the character Stela, from Iaiá Garcia. It will be like watching the characters not less important to the plot with their reaction and point of views related to the marriage and the women situation at this time. We tend to discuss from the behavior of these characters the treatment given by Machado de Assis (the writer) to the woman in the romantic and realist periods in the Brazilian literature. We want to analyze from this writer, Machado de Assis because he took part in these two periods. Thus searching for mutations happened to the aesthetic in the work of Machado de Assis, trying to discover him. Yet how he got so famous from simple romantic romances at this time, he wrote famous best sellers called Mémoria Postumas de Brás Cubas and Dom Casmurro. We will search for the characteristic and the signs of these changes which could have started with Iaiá Garcia. For this we will compare Iaiá Garcia with Helena the ones that we consider a work predominantly romantic. Thus we will try to catch these modifications and take the transition moment. We consider the following characteristics of Machado de Assis as typical from second period: The dissimulation of his characters, the ambiguity, the irony, the blue moody, the pessimism, the boredom and the incredulity between life and human being. We will search these indicators the ones that by chance can be found in Iaiá Garcia. We will also try to confirm the predominance of Helena romantic characteristics to affirm that Iaiá Garcia can already be considered a romance with realist tendencies.

Helena Antipoff, as Sociedades Pestalozzi e a educação especial no Brasil

Rafante, Heulalia Charalo 28 February 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T19:35:42Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Retido.pdf: 19733 bytes, checksum: 6aad255badc436a06364517de2344ab6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-28 / Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos / In this study we analyze Helena Antipoff s trajectory in order to understand her participation, as well as that of institutions created by her, in the construction of Special Education in Brazil. We investigate everything from the first specialized educational establishments to the creation of the National Center for Special Education (CENESP) in 1973, and present the context in which Antipoff s ideas and practices were introduced in the national scenario, as well as the conditions that led to their continuation. This is a research based on documentary sources where we deal with Special Education, taking as reference both education in general and the different historical contexts in Brazil, with their social, political and economic particularities. To start with, we present the trajectory of the Russian psychologist and educator Helena Antipoff, highlighting the theoretical and methodological principles of her education and what brought her to Brazil in 1929. In the second chapter, we deal with the history of Brazilian Special Education, where we present the first institutions created; the influence of the movements of the New School and Mental Hygiene in the configuration of demands for special education; and also, the main actions directed to "exceptional" children in the first four decades of the twentieth century. In the third chapter, we relate Antipoff s actions in Minas Gerais with the Brazilian historical context in the 1930s and 1940s and assess the motivations that led the educator to create institutions that met the needs of "exceptional" children. In the fourth chapter, we investigate the factors that led Helena Antipoff to go to the National Child Department in the Federal District in 1945; her performance in that department; and the creation of the Pestalozzi Societies of Brazil (1945) and of the State of Rio de Janeiro (1948). In Chapter V, we analyze the issues of the proceedings Seminars on Exceptional Children, coordinated by the Pestalozzi Societies (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955), in order to understand the spread of the educator s ideas throughout the country. In the last chapter, we focus on the initiatives by the federal government in the 1960s and early 1970s related to Special Education in order to identify the impact of Helena Antipoff s propositions in that respect. We conclude that the actions taken by her in Brazil with the creation of the Pestalozzi Societies in the several States (1932 - MG, 1945 - DF, 1948 - RJ; 1952 - SP 1954 - BA, 1955 - GO), were crucial in bringing about the problematics of education of "exceptional" children. These institutions acted by informing the public about the types of "abnormalities" and their possible care, by training specialists in the field, and also by claiming public funds to finance programs pertaining to the area. This process culminated in the four proceedings Seminars on Exceptional Childhood, whose developments influenced the federal government to establish: (a) The National Campaigns of Education, introducing the theme of education of "exceptional" children; (b) the inclusion of Special Education in the Guidelines and Bases of National Education Law (no. 4024/61); and (c) the institutionalization of the National Week of Exceptional People (1964). This scenario depicts a concrete demand for the institutionalization of Special Education at the national level, which was not materialized in an autonomous way for Education in Brazil until the early 1970s. It was only in the wake of the implementation of Law number 5692/71, whose goal was the universalization of education, in general, from 7 to 14 years of age, that Special Education was included in the Sectorial Plan of Education (1972-1974), through Priority Project number 35. This project was developed under the influence of what was being done in the field of Special Education in Brazil, mainly by the Pestalozzi Societies, but also received significant influence from the MEC-USAID agreements and determinations by the UN for this sector. It was in order to run this project that CENESP was created.

The representation of aspects of Afrikaner and British masculinity in the first season of Arende (1989) by Paul C Venter and Dirk de Villiers : a critical analysis

Hall, Arthur Lewis January 2013 (has links)
This study performs a critical analysis of the representation of Afrikaner and British masculinity in the first season of the South African War (1899-1902) television series Arende (1989-1993). The study first identifies key concepts in both western identity and masculinity and then moves on to build an historical theoretical base from which season one is analysed. This theoretical base is created through the assimilation of historical sources dealing with masculinity and masculine events from both the Afrikaners and the British. In order to provide a suitable foundation for the investigation into masculinity, the study first briefly explores the concept of identity and how it manifests in both the Afrikaner and British society represented in the first season of Arende. This was done by using a psychological model designed by Roy F Baumeister (1986) which involves both individual and societal identity. Identity as a social construct is also investigated, and the question why identity matters in society is discussed Arguments for a structuralist semiotic approach to identity in a particular society are presented. In dealing with the overview of dominant western masculinity a number of key terms were identified and discussed. These include patriarchy, the female body and masculine control, social labelling, gender order and ‘women watching,’ the family unit, division of labour and public and private space, hegemonic masculinity and the male hero. After this overview, the study conducted an assimilation exercise into historic Afrikaner and British masculinity during the time before and after the South African War. This discussion centres on a number of points dealing with both societies, namely the model male, male military tradition, masculine rebels/outcasts and other masculine issues, and male relations with women. The final part of this study involves the analysis of the masculine theory, generated in the previous chapter, on the Arende text. This was done by selecting six characters from each of the two societies in season one and describing how they represent themselves in a masculine manner (or not). / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Visual Arts / unrestricted
