Welcome to madness : The role of Greece as the gatekeeper of Fortress Europe

<p>This thesis aims to explore the different aspects of the phenomenon of migration in Greece, as a case study. The choice of country is motivated by its geographical position at Europe’s external borders. In order to gain an insight into the reality that migrants are faced with when searching for a better life in Europe, a field study was conducted in Athens, Greece during a period of six weeks in the spring of 2010. The field work included interviews with various actors and individuals that are directly involved in migration issues, informal discussions with migrants and personal observations. Additionally, secondary sources such as previous studies were used. The framework used to approach the material included elements from neo-institutionalism, hermeneutics as well as critical theory.</p><p>The most important conclusions reached incorporate that the rights of migrants are not respected in any aspect of the societal sphere, or in other words the three institutional pillars, the regulative, normative and cultural-cognitive. As a result, there are double standards applied to Europeans respective migrants. As a possible cause of the problematic situation described, underlying perceptions of national identity versus "otherness" are identified. These perceptions derive from a deeply rooted acceptance of social constructions such as national borders, as undisputable facts.</p>

Tid för vårdande möten : Att vidmakthålla och utveckla vårdandet med patientperspektivet i fokus

Aim: The overall aim is to examine how a patient perspective, grounded in caring science, can be preserved and developed in the context of hospital care.   Methods: The first study examines attitudes towards caring science in a clinical practice. Data were collected through focus group interviews with seven nurses, three head nurses and four senior preceptors. An interpretive approach guided the study. The results called for collaboration between clinical praxis and the academy, according to how caring science can be preserved and developed. Study II–III functioned in accordance with this goal and were conducted in collaboration with a hospital ward for people over seventy-five years of age. In an attempt to develop care the patients were invited to attend a team meeting. The data in these studies were collected using interviews and observations. Fifteen patients (study II) and nine nurses (study III) who had experienced patient participation in a team meeting participated. In these studies, a reflective lifeworld approach guided the research process. Study IV is presented as a general structure and philosophical examination in the light of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty’s philosophies.   Main Findings: To preserve and develop a patient perspective is strongly connected to existential issues, such as lived time, intersubjectivity and a meaningful existence. For the patients, vulnerability is exposed and increased when the need for hospital care arises. The team meeting is experienced as an emotional situation where existential dimensions need to be recognized. The nurses desire to develop caring is challenged by organizational and economic demands. Time presents both a possibility for an encounter as well as a threat to excellent care.   Conclusions: There is a need to challenge narrow processes in modern health care that value the staffs’ work and the patients’ vulnerability in quantifiable measures of efficiency. The challenge is to take into account something that is invaluable - human existence.

Logic of belief and the content of God : Hans Frei's theological grammar

This thesis offers a systematic engagement with the theological hermeneutics of Hans Frei. The two key conceptual categories are “the logic of belief” and “the content of God”. The former refers to the grammatical ordering of theological statements: Frei is concerned to distinguish grammatical logic from ontology, and to establish the actual starting point for any given theological enterprise. Frei’s own preference for a “linear” and “cumulative” method built upon the starting point of a realistic narrative reading of the gospels is unpacked and explored. The second category, “the content of God”, refers to Frei’s search for an account in which God has actual reality, as opposed to a mere metaphysical abstraction. Indeed, for Frei, the arrival – or failure to arrive – at a ‘concrete’ account of God is the test of any theological starting point, as evidenced in the ability or otherwise to do exegetical justice to the narrative shape of the crucifixion-resurrection sequence. The thesis demonstrates that for Frei, the starting point in the logic of belief must be the identity of Jesus Christ as revealed in scripture, and only on that basis can a concrete content of God be posited. In so doing, the intention is to set Frei very firmly within his mid-twentieth century context, in particular his engagement with and ultimate rejection of existentialist and Neo-orthodox theology. Accordingly, the thesis traces the development in Frei’s thinking of these two conceptual categories, from his doctoral thesis on Barth’s early theology up to and including his twin publications, The Eclipse of Biblical Narrative (1974) and The Identity of Jesus Christ (1975). Later works by Frei are also considered in relation to these. The thesis does not stop at the mid-twentieth century, but illustrates the continued relevance of Frei’s hermeneutical theology into this century, putting him in conversation with a number of systematic and biblical theologians. Suggestions are made as to his applicability to modern theological concerns, including the debate surrounding the being and action of God: a field where he has yet to be deployed successfully.

Methods of analysing early Tudor sacred polyphony : the works of Robert Fayrfax (1464-1521)

This study explores the different ways in which music of the early-Tudor period can be analysed. Approaching the analysis first from a performer’s perspective, it takes the surviving works of Robert Fayrfax (1464–1521) as a case study. Fayrfax was chosen both because of the important rôle he plays within the chronology of changing style in early Tudor England, and because of the lack of a convincing analytical survey of his surviving works. Various analytical methods are developed by drawing upon three areas of investigation: (1) previous analyses of renaissance polyphony; (2) sixteenth-century music theory; and (3) hermeneutics. The basic issues and problems encountered when approaching early Tudor works from an analytical perspective are addressed in the Preface, and discussed in more detail in Chapters 1-3. These chapters form a theoretical basis for the work as a whole. Chapters 4-8 provide a detailed analytical interrogation of Fayrfax’s works, addressing five areas of investigation: the selection and development of pre-compositional material; rhythm and metre; mode and cadential planning; texture and tessitura; and motif, imitation, and free counterpoint. Whilst this study focuses specifically on the works of Robert Fayrfax, it is hoped that works by other early Tudor composers can also be examined using the analytical methods developed.

Le dialogue herméneutique et ses sources platoniciennes : étude sur la place de Platon dans l'herméneutique de Gadamer

Avant tout réputé pour avoir hissé l’herméneutique au premier plan du paysage philosophique contemporain, H.-G. Gadamer est aussi reconnu pour l’originalité de ses écrits en histoire des idées et notamment pour la grande singularité des travaux qu’il a consacrés à la philosophie de Platon. Mais s’agit-il là de deux registres théoriques distincts, l’herméneutique d’un côté et l’exégèse de Platon de l’autre ? Ou bien s’agit-il de deux facettes d’un même projet concerté, deux ouvertures sur un même objet philosophique ? C’est cette deuxième option que notre étude a pour objectif de défendre. Pour ce faire, nous approfondissons, à la lumière de ses écrits sur Platon, les raisons qui poussent Gadamer à développer, dans Vérité et Méthode, son idée de dialogue herméneutique en référence constante à la dialectique platonicienne, pour ensuite montrer comment l’ontologie herméneutique qu’esquisse la dernière partie de Vérité et Méthode est solidaire, voire tributaire, de l’interprétation de la pensée platonicienne que défend généralement Gadamer, et ce, malgré l’instrumentalisme du langage qu’il dénonce chez Platon. / Known above all to have raised hermeneutics in the foreground of contemporary philosophy, H.-G. Gadamer is also renowned for his original contributions to the history of ideas, notably because of his characteristic reading of Plato. However, a question arises: are these two distinct parts of his thought, with his philosophical hermeneutics on the one hand and his exegesis of Plato on the other? Or are they the two facets of a same project, two perspectives on a same philosophical object? Our study aims to defend this second option. In the first place, we present, in light of Gadamer’s reading of Plato, the reasons why in Truth and Method Gadamer develops his own idea of hermeneutical dialogue in reference to Plato’s dialectic. Then we will show how the hermeneutical ontology sketched in the last chapter of Truth and Method remains strongly related to Gadamer’s general reading of Plato, even if Gadamer refuses the instrumentalism of language that he finds in Plato’s thought.

Att vara invandrare och patient i Sverige : Ett individorienterat perspektiv

This thesis focuses on immigrants in Sweden. What experiences from the meeting with Swedish society do immigrants have and what meaning does the immigrant background have when they have been patients within the Swedish health and medical service? Former research about patients with an immigrant background can be divided into two perspectives. One which illuminates ethnically demarcated immigrant groups and specific needs. The other perspective has an individually adopted approach independently of the patients’ ethnical background. Here it is mainly the communication problems that are stressed, since these make it hard to understand the individual’s needs. The two empirical studies of the thesis start from an individualised perspective, a life world perspective. Research data have been collected through open interviews. The overall purpose was to develop a deepened understanding of what it means to live as an immigrant in Sweden and receive care. The aim of the pre-study was to examine immigrants’ experiences of participation in municipal home care. In the main study the overall purpose was used and two research questions were asked: What do persons with an immigrant background have to tell us about their situation in Swedish society? How does the situation as an immigrant in Sweden influence the experience of being a patient in Swedish health and medical care? The pre-study shows that participation means making demands and meeting caregivers who view the patient as an actor with the right to make his or her own decisions. One important postulate seems to be access to a good interpreter. To refrain from participation seems to be about adopting a passive attitude as a patient. It seems as if it is the caregivers who are the active ones and the ones setting the standards for the contents of the care. To experience not being invited to participation mainly seems to originate from the fact that the interviewees could neither understand nor make themselves understood. One consequence is that patients are just looked upon as carriers of a symptom. The main study shows that the interviewees’ existential existence as patients involves the whole life situation. Different forms of unsurmountable difficulties might reinforce each other. The ambition to establish oneself in a new home country might therefore be passivised. For patients with immigrant background earlier experiences from exposed situations seem to influence how the patients feel about their treatment. The additional knowledge is that problems seem to reinforce each other. Patients with an immigrant background must be treated as individuals. Every individual’s story has to be made visible. The thesis shows that caregivers ought to endeavour to understand the individual. To encourage dialogue, despite language problems, is of importance for the patient to be able to express his or her needs. The use of an interpreter may have a positive influence on these patients’ possibilities to exert an influence. This means that caregivers who consult an interpreter should build up their competence to communicate through an interpreter.

Vanmaktens makt har också blivit titeln på denna undersökning av sekulariseringstematiken i Delblancs Samuelsvit och Änkan. – Hur framställs och bearbetas sekulariseringen i dessa texter? – Vilka bilder ger de av sekulariseringsprocessen och dess följder,av ett sekulariserat samhälle och en sekulariserad människa? Dessa frågor, bland andra, diskuterar Helene Blomqvist i denna studie.Delblancs fem romaner bearbetar två livsfrågor som tycks bli på ett särskilt sätt aktualiserade genom sekulariseringen: frågan omontologin och frågan om etiken. Det handlar å ena sidan om ett teoretiskt spörsmål – om hur man kan uppfatta tillvarons grundläggande beskaffenhet – och å andra sidan om ett praktiskt – hurman bäst skall leva sitt liv i denna värld. Såväl Samuelsviten som Änkan gör upp räkningen med en gammal monistisk allsmäktig-Gud-ontologi. Teodicéproblemet visar sig vara trons stötesten: föreställningenom en allsmäktig och allgod gud kan inte fås att rimma med allt det destruktiva i tillvaron, ondskans framfart,eget och andras lidande. Romanerna gestaltar alla ett sökande efter en mer hållbar ontologisk och etisk grund. Hur skulle ett sådant alternativ kunna se ut? This thesis utilized the field hermeneutics within the study of gender roles of  women within religion.  It argues the relevance of interpretation that have lead to the patriarchal structures within culture and society.  In effort to restructure their place in society, women are redefining gender roles through a combination of hermeneutics and Feminism.  They are looking at commonly misinterpreted verses that have lead to their subordination to male culture, while also bringing attention to texts and stories within the Bible and the Quran  that have long been neglected to show the equality that lies within their religions.

Intensivvårdsrummets betydelse för vårdande och välbefinnande : patienters närståendes och vårdpersonalens erfarenheter / The meanings of ICU patient room as a place of care from the perspective of patients next of kin and staff

Aim: The overall aim of the thesis was to illuminate the meanings of intensive care units’ patient rooms as a place of care for critically ill patients and their loved ones. Moreover, it was aimed to develop photovoice as a data collection method for research in ICU context. Methods and materials: Data has been collected using photovoice methodology in combination with research interviews for all three empirical studies. In total 37 people participated. Nine patients, fourteen loved ones and fourteen nurses from three ICU settings. Study I examined the perspective of loved ones, for this purpose a phenomenological hermeneutic method rooted in the philosophy of Ricoeur was chosen. Study II and III examined patients’ respectively nurses’ perspective. Both studies are phenomenologically orientated guided by a reflective lifeworld approach rooted in continental philosophy. Study IV is a theoretical paper focusing on employing photovoice as a data collection method in ICU context. Main findings: The tone and touch of caring is vital for how ICU patient room is materialized for patients. The interior design and furnishing has a great impact on the wellbeing of the loved ones and also the support they can offer the critically ill patient. One major finding is that the ICU patient room is a taken for granted place for health care providers and the impact of it upon caring, patients’ and loved ones wellbeing is not reflected over. It also seems unclear who is responsible for the environment of ICU once it has been built. The environment of ICU affects nurses’ ability to care for the patients and their family in a genuine way and to promote their wellbeing during a fragile time in life. Conclusions: There is an urgent need to translate research findings into clinical practice in order to improve the environment of ICU patient rooms.
