What they need : delivery of career development to grade twelve students

Rapidly changing social and economic conditions can impart significant challenges to high school career decisions. Recent career education initiatives have been structured to support this school-to-work and school-to-post-secondary education transition. The student needs assessment focus of study allows a unique insight into the availability, delivery, and effectiveness of high school career programs. This research provides data from a nineteen-item Comprehensive Career Needs Survey, administered to 888, Southern Alberta grade 12 students. The results profile the student responses to questions on career plans after high school the meaning of occupation and career, career choice, reasons for career choice the importance of career planning, factors of encouragement and discouragement in career plans, and what would be most helpful in career plans. Questions on career hlep included the availability, use, and helpfulness of high school services, curriculum and resources, the peple helpful to career, the confidence in career plans after high school and the preferred work location. The results of this study suggest grade 12 students value career plans and the resources both people and informational, to support transitions. These students voice the need to have passion for career, and report a wide range of occupational choices. The large majority who plan post-secondary education or training expressed the need for diverse but specific career development services to support success in career. High school career development resources are available but the efficacy data suggest their under utilization or reports of not being fully helpful to career plans. An important finding is that career resources are used in the school setting but not the community. The results of this study have implications for the delivery of high school career programs and the development of the public policy on career services. / x, 149 leaves ; 29 cm.

A study of cultural conflict as experienced by adolescents of Vietnamese origin in Montreal secondary schools

This study is an inquiry into cultural conflict experienced by adolescents of Vietnamese origin in Montreal. It examines the nature of the conflicts as they are experienced by the adolescents themselves, as they are perceived by the parents, and by the teachers, counsellors and principals at the secondary schools they attended. The study also examines the course of the conflicts and the kinds of solutions used to resolve them. Separate semi-structured interviews were conducted with six adolescents, five parents and seven school personnel in two public schools attended by the students. Analysis of the interviews showed that students, parents and school personnel tended to define the problems in different ways and to have very different perceptions of their causes. In those families in which the problems of cultural conflict manifested themselves most severely, parents and children tended to use behaviours leading to a deterioration of relations between them and employed a very limited range of alternatives for conflict resolution.

The attitudes of students of Greek origin in a French-language learning situation in a Québec secondary school /

This study surveyed the attitudes of 59 Secondary V students of Greek origin who were studying in the French language. Their school, formerly an English Protestant High School, is located in the Province of Quebec. The school now contains groups of students in separate English-medium and French-medium programmes because language laws require more recent immigrants to be taught in French. The study showed that most of the students in the French programme are more proficient in English than in French, that their attitudes toward the French language are more instrumental or pragmatic than affective or integerative. These factors may be related to the fact that students in the French programme had lower levels of academic achievement.

High school adolescent's suicidal behaviour caused a concern to the Umzimkulu community and the multi - disciplinary team in the local Psychiatric institution during the years 1997 - 1999 . The purpose the study was to identify and describe the charactics of adolescents who committed suicide. Rutter's (1995) model of risk. resilience and recovery has been used as a theoretical frame work for the study. A descriptive, exploratory case study design is most suitable for the incidence of suicide at Umzimkulu District .The case study approach was best suited as it assists in an indepth study focussing on contemporary phenomena with sum real life contexts . The distinctive need for the case study design arises out the desire to understand complex psycho-social phenomena of adolescent suicide (Yin, 1989).Each adolescent who committed suicide over the last two years in Umzimkulu District will form a case . All data about the particular person will be the case description Adolescents who committed suicide were identified from the records at the police intelligence office of Umzimkulu Police Station. Parents, identified friends, teachers and health workers who had known the adolescents. Semi structured interviews with open ended questions were used. Interview schedules for teachers, parents and close friends differed slightly. A tape recorder for later transcription was utilised. To analyse the data, Ruttter's model was utilised to do cross case analysis. Physical activity is one of the key factors in strengthening health. Yet, in Lithuania as well as in the whole world, the physical activity among youngsters is insufficient. The sudden decrease of physical activity during this period is becoming a huge issue of the society with indisputably harmful consequences (Cairney et al., 2012; Kahn et al., 2008; Bobrova, Grajauskas, 2005); hence the promotion of physical activity of youngsters during this period of their life is becoming one of the most important and urgent issues of the healthcare of the society (Sirard, Barr-Anderson, 2008). Evidently, the period of youngsters is critical; at this time, it is crucial to take extra measures of promotion of physical activity (Schneider, Cooper, 2011). In the activity of physical education, when promoting physical activity of students of senior grades, a new method of educational counseling was brought into practice which is based on Solution focused brief therapy as developed by de Schazer (1985). Labai staigus fizinio aktyvumo mažėjimas tarp vyresniųjų klasių mokinių tampa didžiule visuomenės problema, kurios pasekmės yra žalingos (Cairney et al., 2012; Kahn et al., 2008; Bobrova, Grajauskas, 2005). Todėl vienas svarbiausių ir aktualiausių visuomenės sveikatos priežiūros uždavinių – skatinti jaunuolių fizinį aktyvumą (Sirard, Barr-Anderson, 2008). Peace education and violence in Mexico: what do junior high school students aspire to be?

This single case study in Peace Education (PE) was conducted in Central Mexico where violence is manifest in different ways and consequently, PE may be an important intervention. The aim of this study was to acquire an understanding of the impact of PE in Mexico and to understand how students conceptualize peace and violence and how these phenomena impact their aspirations. Participants in this study were a school principal, teachers as well as 9th grade students from a telesecundaria. This research produced a number of key findings: Mexico does not have one concrete conception of PE; the student participants’ definition of peace and violence reflect their reality; and their aspirations can be commensurate with the principles of PE. One of the main conclusions drawn from this study is that although there are a several practices of PE in Mexico, the country needs one concrete proposal of PE tailored to its specific reality.

The relationship between personality factors and academic achievement of high school students of Oman

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the academic achievement and the need for achievement and the need for affiliation for high school students of Oman. Further investigation was carried out if there was a significant difference in the needs for achievement and affiliation between high G.P.A. students and low G.P.A. students as well as between males and females. A self-rating form of 75 items derived from the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule was used to measure the fifteen needs listed by Duncan Osborne (1963). However, the scores on ten items pertaining to need for achievement and need for affiliation were used in this study. Academic achievement was measured by the scores on school tests from the Interior Province of Oman. The results indicated no significant correlation between the academic achievement and the need for achievement and the need for affiliation. The results also showed no significant difference between high G.P.A. students and low G.P.A. students as well as between males and females on either the need for achievement or affiliation.

Exercise attitudes and behaviors of academically accelerated and non-accelerated high school students

The investigation of youths' exercise attitudes and behaviors has been heavily researched. This study's focus was unique in that exercise attitudes and behaviors of academically accelerated and non-accelerated high school students were examined. Academic ability and sex were considered as possible influences toward physical activity attitudes and as potential predictor variables of exercise behaviors. The Revised CATPA inventory and the Attitudes Toward Exercise scale assessed subjects' exercise attitudes. A modified 7-Day Recall of Physical Activity measured the amount of time subjects spent exercising in the previous week. Results showed higher mean Revised CATPA scores for the academically accelerated and male subjects, while the ATE scores were higher among academically non-accelerated and female students. Results on the activity recall suggested that males were more physically active. A multiple regression analysis showed predictor variables of exercise. Development of an instrument to measure the tobacco control advocacy knowledge of youth

The problem of this study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument to assess the tobacco control advocacy knowledge level of high school students enrolled in the Busting Big Tobacco (BBT) program. The steps taken to examine this problem include: created a table of specifications, created the initial instrument, selected a jury of experts, a qualitative assessment by jurors, created the revised instrument, a quantitative review by jurors, revised the instrument, conducted a modified pilot test of the instrument using university students, and created the final 23 item instrument.The final instrument was administered to a group of Missouri high school students on two separate occasions a week apart. Out of the total 77 students that participated, 28 instruments were matched for data analysis. Two instrument items fell below a significant content validity ratio of .62. The mean item difficulty for the first and second administration of the final instrument was .53 and .49 respectively. The test-retest reliability was .6756 and the internal consistency reliability. 5696 for the first administration and .4815 for the second. Recommendations included: improving the confidentiality code, restructuring items into subscales, and give to BBT participants. / Department of Physiology and Health Science
