Regression models to assess the thermal performance of Brazilian low-cost houses: consideration of natural ventilation / Modelos de regressão para avaliação do desempenho térmico de habitações de interesse social brasileiras: consideração da ventilação naturalRossi, Michele Marta 28 January 2016 (has links)
Building performance simulations [BPS] tools are important in all the design stages, mainly in the early ones. However, some barriers such as time, resources and expertise do not contribute to their implementation in architecture offices. This research aimed to develop regression models (meta-models) to assess the thermal discomfort in a Brazilian low-cost house [LCH] during early design. They predicted the degree-hours of discomfort by heat and/or by cold as function of the design parameters changes for three Brazilian cities: Curitiba/PR, São Paulo/SP, and Manaus/AM. This work focused on using the meta-models to evaluate the impact of the parameters related to natural ventilation strategies on thermal performance in LCH. The analyzed Brazilian LCH consisted in a naturally ventilated representative unit developed based on the collected data. The most influential parameters in thermal performance, namely as key design parameters, were building orientation, shading devices positions and sizes, thermal material properties of the walls and roof constructive systems as well as window-to-wall ratios (WWR) and effective window ventilation areas (EWVA). The methodology was divided into: (a) collecting projects of Brazilian LCH, and based on that a base model that was able to represent them was proposed, (b) defining the key design parameters and their ranges, in order to compose the design space to be considered, (c) simulating thermal performance using EnergyPlus coupled with a Monte Carlo framework to randomly sample the design space considered, (d) using the greater part of the simulation results to develop the meta-models, (e)using the remaining portion to validate them, and (f) applying the meta-models in a simple design configuration in order to test their potential as a support design tool. Overall, the meta-models showed R2 values higher than 0.95 for all climates. Except for the regression models to predict discomfort by heat for Curitiba (R2 =0.61) and São Paulo (R2 =0.74). In their application, the models showed consistent predictions for WWR variations, but unexpected patterns for EWVA.

Jonson's and Shakespeare's "Comedy of Affliction"Goossen, Jonathan 23 August 2011 (has links)
This dissertation explores the relevance of recent studies of Aristotle’s comic theory to the central dramatists of early modern England, Ben Jonson and William Shakespeare. Applications of the Poetics to Renaissance English drama tend to treat Aristotle’s theory historically, as a set of concepts mediated to England by continental redactions. But these often conflated the Poetics’ focus on literary form with the Renaissance’s predominant interest in literature’s rhetorical effect, reducing Aristotle’s genuinely speculative theory to a series of often pedantic literary prescriptions. Recent scholarship has both undone these misinterpretations and developed the comic theory latent in the Poetics. Ironically, these studies make Jonson’s and Shakespeare’s comedy look much more Aristotelian than do Renaissance ones. So rather than taking the Poetics simply as a possible source for each dramatist, I read it primarily as a literary theory that, when reinvigorated by modern scholarship, can explain structures and effects arrived at practically by these dramatists.
Three recent hypotheses are especially pertinent to Jonson and Shakespeare: that comic hoaxes aim to expose comic error, which is for Aristotle a deviation from the mean of virtue; that “righteous indignation” is the comic emotion equivalent to the “pity and fear” of tragedy; and that catharsis is a clarification, rather than purgation, of reason and emotion. In light of these, I offer detailed readings of four plays that demonstrate these authors’ comic range: from Jonson’s satirical Every Man Out of His Humour to the almost farcical Epicoene, and from Shakespeare’s romantic Much Ado About Nothing to the tragicomic Measure for Measure. These plays demonstrate a variety of ways in which catharsis, the end of drama, results directly from the comic hoax and involves both the audience’s and characters’ experience of indignation and their comprehension of its relationship to the emotions of envy and pity. In each case, Aristotle’s incisive but flexible theoretical framework enables an explanation of the emotional pain present in the these “comedies of affliction” and reveals remarkable similarities between dramatists usually described as direct opposites.

ARCHITECTURE ET SIMULATION LOCALES DU SYSTEME D'INFORMATION DOMOTIQUE-SANTE INTEGRE A DOMICILE (SID²) POUR LA DETECTION DE SITUATIONS A RISQUE ET L'AIDE A LA DECISIONVirone, Gilles 26 November 2003 (has links) (PDF)

The Church lives in times of change. In times of change Christ builds and equips his
Church, through the Holy Spirit, to proclaim the gospel to the world and to make
disciples. As part of the congregation, it is important to ask what the role of the youth
and youth ministry plays in the building and equipment of the church, which Christ is
busy doing. The aim of this dissertation is to examine the possibility that discipleship
can be used as a model for ministry for congregation–building to the baptized
members (13 to 18 years of age) of the Reformed Churches in South Africa.
The following working method was used in order to reach this particular aim:
* Firstly, a basis–theoretical investigation was conducted ascertaining the
subject, object, aim and nature of congregation–building.
* Secondly, a basis–theoretical investigation focused on discipleship was done.
In this investigation the aim was to find a workable definition for 'disciple' and
'discipleship' as well as the aim and nature of discipleship. This investigation
concluded by showing the relation between congregation–building and
discipleship.
* Thirdly, an empirical study was launched to determine the situation in the
Reformed Churches in South Africa pertaining to youth and youth ministry. In
this study the first priority was to determine the aim for youth ministry as
determined by the Deputies for Catechesis and Youth nurture of the Reformed
Churches in South Africa. The second priority is to determine the present
tendencies under the youth in classis KwaZulu–Natal–North of the Reformed
Churches in South Africa. The findings of this study were then weighed
against the perception of the teachers of Catechesis in this particular classis.
* Lastly, the findings of the basis–theoretical investigation and the empirical
study was synthesised into a practical theory for discipleship as `n ministry
model for church–building for the baptized members (13 to 18 years of age) in
the Reformed Churches in South Africa.
The finding of this study is that discipleship can indeed be applied as a ministry
model for church–building for the baptized members (13 to 18 years of age) in the
Reformed Churches in South Africa. Through this ministry model the baptized member can be equipped in a contextual–relevant manner to bring the gospel to the
world, through his or her love for God to his or her neighbour, as a member of the
faith community of the church. / Thesis (M. Th. (Pastoral))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

A Critical Edition of Donne's "The Indifferent," "Love's Usury," "The Will," "The Funerall," "The Primerose," and "The Dampe" and a Digital Edition of "To his Mistress Going to Bed"McLawhorn, Tracy Elizabeth 03 October 2013 (has links)
This dissertation presents an edition of six poems from John Donne’s Songs and Sonets—“The Indifferent,” “Love’s Usury,” “The Will,” “The Funerall,” “The Primerose,” and “The Dampe”—and a digital edition of one additional poem, “To His Mistress Going to Bed.” Using the methodologies of The Variorum Edition of the Poems of John Donne, I have also adopted the edition’s principal goal—to recover and present Donne’s exact texts to the extent that this is possible. For each poem, I have selected a copy-text and emended it in accordance with the Variorum’s principles. A textual introduction for each poem explains how the copy-text was chosen and traces the circulation of the text in all seventeenth-century artifacts. I have also provided a textual apparatus for each poem, which, in addition to recording the texts collated, emendations to the copy-text, imperfections in the sources, and indentation patterns in the sources, also notes all verbal variants and variants of punctuation. Finally, I have created a stemma charting the transmissional history for each poem and giving a visual representation of how the textual artifacts relate to each other.
The other major component of my dissertation, a digital edition of “To His Mistress Going to Bed,” is meant to serve as a prototype for what might usefully be done with Donne’s poems in a digital medium. While the actual digital edition of this poem cannot be fully represented on paper, my chapter on this edition outlines the process I used to create it and describes its major features. The digital edition itself can be found at <http://donnevariorum.tamu.edu/resources/tohismistress/tohismistress.html>.

The role and position of Jewish women between 200 BCE - 200 CELief, Hélène Rhona 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the role and position of Jewish women in the Near East
between 200 BCE - 200 CE. This was a very important period in Jewish legal and
cultural history.
The redaction of the Mishnah, the oldest extant body of Jewish law, was completed
at approximately the end of the time under review, and was to have a lasting
influence on the Jewish people.
No society exists in a vacuum. During these years the Jews lived within the GraecoRoman
Empire and this reflected on their attitudes towards women.
To appreciate this it has been necessary to go back in time to the Hebrew Bible and
to trace any attitudinal changes which occurred over the centuries.
Although the Mishnah has been regarded as the terminus ad quem of this
investigation, brief mention is also made of prevailing attitudes affecting women in
present day Jewish society. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / M.A. (Judaica)

Previous issue date: 2013-02-28 / The society is changing, in this sense, our research arises in order to understand it better, as well as to understand the individuals who compose it. Thus, this research presents a significant relevance, to reflect on the great changes in society that the current technological, information, and digital revolution is causing. And these changes are of interest to us within schools and math classrooms, being often the technological and information area associated with the discipline of mathematics. In writing this dissertation, we present the development paths of research, from choosing a qualitative methodology, which used interviews and questionnaires to the constitution of the research data, until the resulting analyses of dialogue with the chosen theoretical framework, the Mannheim generation theory. Therefore, we intend to answer the research question and the outlined objectives; we also bring along writing, short questions and concerns towards instigating further reflection, as we propose to understand what is laid and not direct solutions. In this context, the guiding question of this research was organized in order to study the Mannheim generation theory, relating it to the social changes brought about by the technological, information, and digital revolution that plaguing the society, trying to understand these changes, especially when it regards to access to the Internet, focusing on the mathematics teacher and their students. Thus, the theoretical framework is centered on two axes; one of them relates to the new technology revolution, in which we address mainly social changes amid the digital age and internet access, as well as, how these changes are happening to our research subjects. The other axis is directly linked to generational issues, from the perspective of the generation theory, written by Karl Mannheim. It was noticed that even with some changes, what still prevails in the math classroom is the traditional teaching, and the informatics and the new technologies have emerged as a new resource for teachers at the planning time; for students, it continues as the entertainment, the search for the news, sometimes in school aid, but mainly to communicate with colleagues and friends. One of the relevant points in studying the Mannheim generational theory is the new way to realize what is a generation, away from the original idea of the chronological focus. We have understood that the speed of changes generated by new technologies leads to generational nuances in contrast to disruptions that marked the another generations in earlier times, i.e., the change of generations does not happen abruptly, but there is a continuous unfolding, where the interaction among the generations is one of the pillars of social evolution. The dissertation results in a novel and interesting theoretical approach, uniting the theme of the digital age, the math teacher and their students, present at some time in academic research, in both areas education and mathematics, with the generational studies of the sociologist Mannheim. With this dialogue, we try to show new possibilities of reflection on the daily math teacher and their students.

Prameny pozitivního vztahu k druhým lidem / The sources of positive relationship to other peopleSTAŇKOVÁ, Jana January 2010 (has links)
The work deals with individual sources of positive relationship to other people in the frame of mainly psychological, but also ethical and philosophical data. It is composed of five thematic chapters. The first four thematic chapters include knowledge about sense of human being, positive relationship of a person to his/her own life, relationship of a person to himself/herself, relationship of a person to other people; if the man loves himself, he is satisfied with himself and impresses friendly and harmonically on his surroundings too. He is social, friendly and he gets on well with the others. Next to it compromises thinking about friendship as a positive attitude to other person, which makes joy, sense of fellowship and protects human life from falls into darkness and suffering; relationship of a person to some other person raises hopes and backing in insecure human life. In the fifth part there is a main cogitation from {\clq}qroots{\crq}q of relationship of a person to other people and aims at beneficial findings in the frame of personal views and positions.
