Understanding Educational Choice Processes of Retired Professional Hockey Players

Donnelly, Jilian K. January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the processes and influences that underlie the choice of retired elite athletes to further their education and assume the adult learner role. In the current study, focus was applied specifically to professional ice hockey players who were in a period of retirement from active play. Elite athletes often retire at a time when most other professions are just beginning or reaching a level of stability. Research suggests that many retired elite athletes experience a difficult transition to an early retirement from athletics that is fraught with depression and unemployment. A select number of these elite athletes choose to further their educations after their careers have expired. The literature suggests that some of these retired elite athletes find educational programming a valuable coping strategy in the often traumatic post-athletic career adjustment. Unfortunately, this choice is made by only few athletes. It would be desirable to encourage more retired athletes to consider and engage in educational activities; however, currently, there is only very little knowledge on the processes underlying athletes' choice to participate, or not to participate, in education in their retirement years. Using a theoretical framework that includes adult learning theory and adult development theory, in conjunction with expectancy-value theory of motivation, the impact of individual characteristics and environmental opportunities on post-athletic career choices made by professional athletes may be better understood. The primary instrument for data collection was a personal interview with ten retired professional hockey players, conducted over a consecutive six-month period resulting in significant data. Utilizing the constant-comparative method for data analysis, common themes were identified as indicators of educational engagement: Informal Mentorship, Head Injury Related Retirement, and Pre-Transition Planning. In addition to these themes, the findings reflected an alternative adult developmental model possibly unique to professional hockey players. The findings of this study are valuable to the larger conversation regarding adult learners, adult development, and elite athlete career transition. / Educational Administration

Cold War Politics and Sports : Ice Hockey Competitions and the Image of the USSR in Western Mass Media

Angestav, Oscar January 2022 (has links)
The notion that politics and sport should not be mixed together have been a common notion throughout the 20th century. Nevertheless, the fact that sport is political has continuously been revealed and apparent, in particular during the period of the Cold War. During the Cold War, the Summit Series in 1972 and the Miracle on Ice in 1980 were two ice hockey events that characterised the confrontation between the Soviet Union and the West. However, rather than referring to the characterisation of the two events, it is of value to examine how the two sport events were reflected in Western mass media. Thus, this thesis, through the usage of mediatization theory in a critical discourse analysis of archival materials of Dagens Nyheter and New York Times, focuses on how international sport events outcomes of the Soviet Union, during the Cold War, were reflected in Western media. My thesis addresses this research question within the context of the Cold War led by the USA and the Soviet Union. Therefore, it is crucial to analyse this question within the intersection of national-and-international factors that condition this competition in all aspects, including in sports. It is demonstrated that the reflected image of the Soviet Union differed between the media outlets; moreover, it is illustrated that the coverage of the events was, to a certain extent, characterised and influenced by either political sentiments or countries political status, depending on the geographic location of the newspaper.

Sundström, Andreas January 2024 (has links)
This theses in the field of Information Design, with a focus on Interaction Design, has been conducted in collaboration with AIK Hockey with the aim of exploring how a mobile application can be designed to effectively meet the information needs of supporters of the club, improve communication between AIK Hockey and its supporters, and simultaneously adhere to good practice in interaction design.   Through a review of relevant literature and the collection and analysis of empirical data from users and stakeholders, this study seeks to contribute insights into how design principles can be applied to create a user-friendly and engaging mobile application suitable for a sports club. With a focus on strengthening the bonds between the club and its supporters, this work aims to explore the role these identities play for each other and how they can be used as guidance for the design process.  In summary, this thesis addresses a complex topic regarding supporters’ identification with a sports club and offers insights into how these needs and behaviors can be addressed through the design of a mobile application. By integrating theoretical perspectives such as human-centered design, semiotics, and Norman’s seven fundamental design principles, along with insights from the collected empirical data through surveys and a semi-structured interview, this study aims to present a design proposal that addresses the needs and expectations surrounding a mobile application for AIK Hockey.

Från sällan till ofta : En fallstudie inom professionell idrott om sporadiska besökares konsumtion / From seldom to frequent : A case study withinprofessional sports regarding low frequent spectators’consumption

Lundgren, Fredrik, Järnkrok, Emma January 2016 (has links)
Problem definition: Today there is a negative trend regarding the number of spectators among a majority of the organizations within professional ice hockey in Sweden. This is a problematic development since the spectators play an important part for the event of the games, both financially and experientially. Previous research shows that the customer segment which visits one to three games per season is a favorable group when it comes to increasing their consumption. Though, previous research has fore most studied spectators in general terms or have had the devoted fansas main focus. Furthermore, the previous research has primarily been quantitative regarding its research strategy. Aim and research questions: The aim of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of low frequent spectators and understand how the brand can be used in order to influence them to go more often.• Which factors, which influence the consumption, is described by the the low frequent spectators?• How can the knowledge of these identified factors be used in order to influence the low frequent spectator to visit more often from a brand perspective? Methodology: With a qualitative research strategy and a deductive, with element of inductive, research approach, this study has completed twelve semi-structured interviews. The respondents are spectators of ice hockey games of the organization which this study have studied and who visits 1-3 games per season. Results: A number of factors which can influence the low frequent spectators’ consumption through the brand have been noticed through this study. The atmosphere has been identified as a consumption motive among a group of low frequent spectators and the study has also found different versions of the social motive as well as preferences for the nature of the games results. Furthermore, the study has found a group of low frequent spectators which has a high level of knowledge about ice hockey. Finally, the study has also found deeper descriptions of escape and entertainment which also are factors which influence the consumption among a group of low frequent spectators within professional sports. Research grants: This study provides detailed descriptions of low frequent spectators’ consumer behavior and brand associations within professional sports. Furthermore, the study provides additional indications of factors which affect the low frequent spectators’ consumption regarding games.

Boucher, Guy 06 1900 (has links)
Self-talk (S-T) is a mental skill which is used more and more by elite athletes but there is a lack of research on its effect in team sports. Its impact deserves to be evaluated as much during team contexts and real competitions as it does in individual sports because self-talk can affect a team sport athlete's ability to perform mental skills such as good tactical decision-making and focusing on the proper stimuli. Therefore, with the participation of 10 elite hockey players varying from 16 to 20 years old, this study examines the effect of two distinct self-talk treatments, a motivational one and an instructional one. The analysis, evaluating the efficiency of the subjects' ability to accomplish collective tactics (effect on decision process) during the regular season games, has shown that all athletes showed some improvement in their performances. Generally, the group associated with the instructional self-talk treatment has proven to be considerably more effective in decision-making than the motivational group. However, the athletes from the motivational self-talk group generated better results than expected. It seems also that, in the short term, the instructional self-talk treatment was more difficult to assimilate than the motivational one but its positive impact appears to have lasted longer. Furthermore, the more experienced players did not display a better progression in their decision process compared to the less experienced ones. Also, motivational self-talk appears to have produced better effects than the instructional one when used during periods of fatigue and stress.
