Poulin Beaulieu, Ian 17 December 2021 (has links)
Little information is available regarding how to categorize Learning Activities (LA) proposed to athletes during training sessions in competitive team sport. Due to the importance of game fundamentals in team sports, teaching tactical skills should predominate all other components of player performance (physical, technical, strategic, tactical). However, observation of coaches' training sessions seems to show that coaches use few tactical SAPs compared to technical or physical conditioning activities. The purpose of this study was to create a categorization framework that would allow the description and comparison of the characteristics of SAPs offered to athletes in ice hockey and soccer in competitive teams. Analysis of practice sessions (N = 29 in ice hockey and N = 34 in soccer) made it possible to create a Decision Tree comprising of a series of questions that enables the categorization of all forms of SAPs proposed to team sport athletes. This framework was then used to analyze 421 SAPs used by coaches in these two sports. Results of the analysis showed that the proportion or quality of tactical exercises were low compared to technical skills SAPs or physical conditioning exercises. In conclusion, the Decision tree makes it possible to categorize most learning situations or exercises offered to athletes. In addition, the results demonstrate the importance of new pedagogical strategies allowing a better development of tactical skills.

Öhman, Malin January 2015 (has links)

Blood Money: A Study of the Effect of Fighting on Player Salaries in the National Hockey League

Morton, Matthew G. 01 January 2011 (has links)
Fighting has been a centerpiece of the National Hockey League since it was formed in 1917. Although rules have been introduced regulating the physicality of play in the NHL, fighting is demanded—and encouraged—by fans and players alike. Fans have long been attracted to the violence of professional hockey; previous studies have documented that professional hockey is a “blood sport” that generates revenues with violence. This research investigates the effect of fighting on player salaries in the NHL, examining the way in which fighting has become a strategic element of the game, describing the way players enforce their own “Code” of hockey rules and police the ice in ways referees cannot, and comparing the salaries of fighters and skilled players to determine how players in different roles are valued.

Sport, Not Savagery: Resistance to Hockey Violence in BC Media, 1875-1911

McKee, Taylor 26 August 2015 (has links)
A pervasive fiction has permeated a particular historical narrative regarding hockey’s history in North America. This narrative suggests that violence is woven tightly into the fabric of hockey, due to the prevalence of violent incidents in the history of the game. Many authors, especially those writing for popular audiences, have argued that simply because violent incidents have been recorded throughout the history of hockey, violence must have been condoned in the past, and therefore should continue to be a part of the game. The purpose of this study is to examine the history of hockey violence in British Columbia by evaluating media reactions to violence, as published in newspapers across BC from 1875-1911. However, to describe the early years of organized hockey in Canada as simply being a less-evolved ‘blood sport’ is to marginalize the voices of those individuals that spoke out against violence during this time period. This thesis evaluates the way newspaper reporters reacted to hockey violence during the first years of organized hockey in western Canada. To conduct this appraisal, specific attention is paid to the language used by reporters to characterize violent play, a lexicon shaped by sensationalist trends in Canadian media during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In order to conduct this study, I begin by detailing media response to hockey violence in central Canada, thereby establishing a comparative framework with BC. Having consulted the relevant secondary literature and primary source materials, I argue that although violence, in various forms, has been a part of organized ice hockey since its earliest years, the desire to eradicate violence is just as old. By observing the treatment of violence in BC media from 1875-1911, this study supports the conclusion that violence in organized hockey is no older than attempts to eliminate violence from the game.

Leblanc, Guillaume 10 1900 (has links) (PDF)

Aggression in elite women's ice hockey

Vanier, Julie L. January 2002 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine elite women's ice hockey, with particular emphasis on various aspects of aggression associated with the sport. A qualitative research methodology was employed. Participants included 4 coaches and 15 hockey players, from three elite levels of women's hockey. Each coach was interviewed using an in-depth open-ended format. Each athlete participated in a focus group interview. Commonalities emerged from the coach and athlete data, which resulted in the creation of three higher-order themes that were called (1) state of women's hockey, (2) coach and athlete issues, and (3) aggression in women's hockey. The data focused on the lives of those involved with the sport (coaches and athletes) and topics that were unique to women's ice hockey, including aggression. These results advance information concerning women's sport, coaching, and aggression in elite female athletics.
