“The natural law of education”- Homework assignments in mathematics, a Chinese perspective

Cederberg, Amanda January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the attitudes of several mathematics teachers towards homework as part of the workload of 10-11 year old students at a school in Yunnan Province, China. The focus is to describe and analyze their reasons for assigning homework as well as the nature of that homework. This study also describes their perspectives on how homework can contribute to improving a student’s knowledge of mathematics and what kind of homework they assign. Furthermore, it presents how the teachers describe the ability of the students to assimilate the mathematics homework. The main concepts and theoretical frameworks used to analyze the data are the "two basics", the five elements, cultural capital, habitus, the behaviorist learning theory and sociocultural learning theory. To fulfill my purpose I carried out four interviews and four observations. The results show that the reasons for the teachers assigning homework are “that it is the law of education” and “that practice makes perfect”. The teachers also think that homework helps the students to review and consolidate what they have learned in school that day. In addition, the analysis shows that homework gives students the opportunity to assess whether or not they have understood everything and if they have not, they can practice it. All of the teachers believe homework to be an important part of mathematics education. They assign two principal types of homework: oral and written. Two of the teachers also assign a third type: practical homework. According to the teachers, the students’ ability to assimilate the mathematics homework is affected by their parents’ learning habits, which they themselves have learned from their parents before them. The students are reflections of their parents. If parents have a good learning habit, they will teach their child how to successfully assimilate homework. The teachers agree that the parents’ lack of mathematical knowledge or mandarin can affect their ability to help their child with homework.

Vad är syftet med läxor? - Vad anser pedagoger och elever om läxor?

Steiner, Anna, Kegel, Lena January 2010 (has links)

Runeson, Johanna January 2016 (has links)

Motivational Factors and Obstacles in Written Homework

Miskevich, Halina January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate some motivational factors that enhancepupils’ written homework performance as well as the obstacles that make writtenhomework a difficult task. The method applied in this thesis is qualitative. Theinvestigation was carried out with the help of semi-structured interviews. The results ofthis study indicate that the pupils have different attitudes to their written homework. Themost interesting result is that not all successful pupils are highly externally motivated. The research shows that external motivational factors can enhance the pupils’ writtenperformance well enough but they can also lead to stress and anxiety and complicate thewriting process for less successful pupils. Another finding of this dissertation is thatdeadlines related to assessment can be treated as a negative form of external motivation.

Undervisning bredvid ordinarie utbildning : Jämförelser mellan läxhjälp, privatundervisning och Supplemental instruction / Teaching beside the main education : Comparisons between school administered homework support, private tutoring and Supplemental instruction

Larsson, Johannes, Malmros, Oskar January 2024 (has links)

Formative development of a parent tutor program

Hutchins, Marilyn K. January 1989 (has links)
The procedural problem of this action research study was to develop a parent tutor program to teach parents how to work more effectively with the homework process. The review of literature examined (a) parent involvement, (b) parent education, (c) homework, and (d) curriculum development. A formative evaluation methodology involved four phases: (a) development, (b) implementation, (c) assessment, and (d) revision. The researcher used two curriculum software packages, Peaks CourseBuilding Software and PEAKSolutions LessonBuilding Software™. developed by PEAKSolutions and Vogler in 1989, to prepare a curriculum resource guide containing leader (counselor) guidelines, syllabus, and nine lesson plans. A foundation was provided by a selfhelp book on minimizing the homework hassle entitled Parents as Tutors, written by Vogler and Hutchins in 1988. Six elementary counselors formed an advisory panel to provide formative evaluation/validation of the program during the development and revision phases. The subjects were groups of parents who volunteered to participate in parent tutor groups at three elementary schools in southwest Virginia. Four instruments were designed and used in the formative evaluation process. One was a questionnaire completed by the advisory panel. The others were completed by the participants at the beginning, during, and at the end of the parent education groups. All parents who completed the parent tutor program indicated they experienced positive involvement in the homework process for themselves as well as benefits for their children. Conclusions related to parent participant goals for and problems with the homework process, reasons for parent group attrition, leader role and parent group strategies, and the importance of evaluative data. Recommendations were provided for parent tutor groups and future research. A counselor oriented parent tutor curriculum resource guide including a syllabus and nine comprehensive lesson plans with fieldtested revisions are included in the dissertation. / Ed. D.

Saidi, Aziz 03 1900 (has links)
A considerable amount of research has been devoted to the issue of parental involvement with homework and its importance for children’s education. In particular, studies have focused primarily on how parental homework involvement affects the academic achievement of children. However, these findings are often contradictory (Pattal, Cooper et Robinson, 2008). Given the problems of finding or probing a positive link between parental involvement and academic performance, it is important to better understand this phenomenon. In this line of thought, according to some researchers, the variation of the impact of parental involvement on school performance is mainly due to variables such as family children and schools characteristics. In this context, our study devotes to analyzing the relation between parental involvement and these three factors (family, children and school) for primary school children. First, the status of homework implementation is addressed and parental involvement with homework is analyzed in terms of frequency, duration and the relational climate between parent and child during these activities at home. Second, parents’ involvement is examined in relation to family characteristics (parental education, income, and family structure), personal characteristics (gender and performance) and school characteristics (tasks and homework required by the teacher). This research uses a database from two questionnaire surveys. The first takes place in 192 schools with 457 teachers, the second is conducted in 51 schools with 49 teachers, 848 students in sixth grade and 521 parents. Using descriptive and inferential statistics, it is possible to better determine the conditions of parental involvement in homework with primary school children and to establish which variables (family, children and school) are better predictors of the conditions of parental involvement in their child's homework. The results of this study confirm that the involvement of parents in the fulfillment of homework may vary depending on the family characteristics of children in elementary school. In addition, they show that the academic performance of the child is an important consideration in assessing parental involvement with homework factor.
