Loving the Mountains, Leaving the Mountains: The Appalachian Dilemma and Jim Wayne Miller’s The Brier Poems

Dawson, Madeline 01 May 2022 (has links)
For decades now, the Appalachian community has been internally combatting two equally strong feelings—an inherently rich love of the mountains and a conflicting urge to leave the mountains. In recent years, Appalachian writers have produced a new literary tradition of identifying, discussing, and remedying this dilemma. Jim Wayne Miller’s 1997 The Brier Poems unapologetically explores the Appalachian community’s complicated relationship to its region. bell hooks’ 2012 Appalachian Elegy: Poetry and Place and Savannah Sipple’s 2019 WWJD and Other Poems then expand Miller’s exploration as both hooks and Sipple collectively represent voices that have often been left out of the stereotypical Appalachian narrative; their literature widens the lens of Appalachian experience and repositions the importance of the Appalachian canon. hooks and Sipple are contemporaries in conversation with Miller as all three authors have declared the Appalachian experience to have never been hegemonic—reclaiming, embracing, and uniting a modern Appalachian identity.

A Comparison of Circle and J Hook Performance within the Grenadian Pelagic Longline Fishery

Burns, Anthony G 25 April 2019 (has links)
The development and adaptation of gear technologies to local fisheries has been a management-oriented research strategy commonly used to mitigate the ecological effects of pelagic longline (PLL) gear on bycatch species. Grenada’s PLL fishery primarily targets yellowfin tuna, however while minimal, their bycatch of blue marlin and white marlin exceeds the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) allowed by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). A switch to circle hooks may benefit these nontargeted, bycatch species by reducing catch rates and haulback mortality, as well as increasing post-release survival. To determine differences in performance, assessments of 16/0 circle hooks and 9/0 J hooks were alternated over 26 sets between January and June 2018. Catch, mortality, hook location, length and grade of fish were compared between hook types. No differences in haulback mortality rate for all species, or yellowfin tuna grade were found between hook types. However, significantly fewer billfish collectively (t= 2.36, p= 0.028), and sailfish specifically (t= 3.04, p=0.005), were caught on circle hooks. Additionally, tuna caught with circle hooks had a 69% greater chance of external hooking compared to J hooks (X2 = 4.38 p=0.036). All other species analyzed had statistically similar catch rates regardless of hook type (p < 0.05), including, yellowfin tuna. The results of this study indicate the Grenadian PLL can reduce its impact on billfish bycatch by using 16/0 circle hooks without incurring negative effects on their tuna catch rate or grade. This research provides further evidence that circle hooks should be the recommended gear type when using a bycatch mitigation approach to manage PLL fisheries.

The Multiple Burdens of Joyce : An Intersectional Feminist Analysis of Joyce’s Life in Crossing the River

Haidar, Maha January 2022 (has links)
This essay analyses the life of Joyce, the protagonist in “Somewhere in England”, the fourth section of Crossing the River by Caryl Phillips, using an intersectional feminist perspective. It attempts to show how patriarchy, classism, and racism intersect to shape Joyce’s life and to limit her possibilities. The essay argues that at the beginning, Joyce is too naïve to fully understand the power structures prevailing in her society, and therefore, she is different from those around her. However, she successively experiences not only patriarchal oppression but also class and race oppressions. The result is that Joyce accepts her social position when she understands that it is difficult for an individual woman to challenge the intersected multiple oppressions of the capitalist, supremacist, patriarchal society.

J. D. Karlsson, Marzieh January 2022 (has links)

Visualizing Memory Utilization for the Purpose of Vulnerability Analysis

McConnell, William Charles 02 July 2008 (has links)
The expansion of the internet over recent years has resulted in an increase in digital attacks on computers. Most attacks, including the more dangerous ones, directly target program vulnerabilities. The increase in attacks has prompted a need to develop new ways to classify, detect, and avoid vulnerabilities. The effectiveness of these goals relies on the development of new methods and tools that facilitate the process of detecting vulnerabilities and exploits. This thesis presents the development of a tool that provides a visual representation of main memory for the purpose of security analysis. The tool provides new insight into memory utilization by software; users are able to see memory utilization as execution time progression, visually distinguish between memory behaviors (allocations, writes, etc), and visually observe special relationships between memory locations. The insight enables users to search for visual evidence that software is vulnerable, violated, or utilizing memory incorrectly. The development process for our visual tool has three stages: (1) identifying the memory utilization policies of the Windows 32-bit operating system; (2) identifying the data required for visual representations of memory and then implementing one possible method to capture the data; and (3) enumerating and implementing requirements for a memory tool that generates visual representations of memory for the purpose of vulnerability and exploit analysis. / Master of Science

The Wish for Stability : From Alienation to Femininity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Purple Hibiscus

Fischer, Paulina January 2016 (has links)
This essay concerns Purple Hibiscus and Kambili's emotional development, and explores how violence, submission and emotional dependence along with a traditional feminine gender role can hinder acknowledgement of trauma. I propose that Kambili is encouraged to take on a culturally expected feminine gender role, and her submissive disposition is discussed and connected to her constant search for a father figure. The notion of personal and collective postcolonial trauma is explained and applied to contextualise her inability to question either her father or the political situation in Nigeria. I read Kambili's change as negative and aim to show that she has internalised patriarchal structures. Her change is contrasted to the change in her brother Jaja, to show how and why they develop in different directions. Traditional gender roles are discussed from a rather general perspective, but also in a context that concern masculinity, violence and power relations.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jose Carlos Pacheco dos Santos.pdf: 638792 bytes, checksum: 6f28321f4c3fd95cd1db01843c010e88 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-09-03 / Aiming compare the indices of catch per unit of effort, hook location, and the condition of the fishes caught in two different types of hook, the “circle” (18/0) and “J” (9/0), 81 pelagic longline sets in a equatorial area were observed. The indices of catches for the albacore (Thunnus alalunga), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and swordfish (Xiphias gladius) had not presented a significant differences between the two the types of hook, whereas the bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) target specie in these fisheries, were significantly more caught in the circle hooks than in “J” hooks. The “circle” hooks also showed a mortality rate lesser than the “J” hooks, thus increasing the indices of non target species discarded alive, as for example the blue and white marlin, which in Brazil are being caught beyond the quotas stipulated by the ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas). This fact brings a substantial quality improvement results during the disembark, resulting a high final products qualifying to export and consequently a best sale price.

Foram examinados 400 exemplares provenientes do centroeste (Goiás e Mato Grosso do Sul) e sudeste do Brasil (Minas Gerais e São Paulo). / Characidium lagosantense Travassos, 1947 is redescribed and a new species from the Alto rio Paraná is presentation. Four hundred specimens were examined from west central (Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul) and southeast of Brazil (Minas Gerais and São Paulo). Through morfometric and meristic analysis, color pattern and osteological characters it was possible to redescribe C. lagosantense and propose a new species from the Alto rio Paraná system. Both species differ from all other species in the genus by presenting deep body (usually deeper than 25% of CP) and maximum standard length rarely surpassing 25 mm. Both approach C. bahiense Almeida, 1971, described from a small lake in Arembepe – Bahia, and C. laterale (Boulenger, 1895), described from lower rio Paraná – Paraguai. Characidium lagosantense differs from Characidium sp. for presenting complete lateral line, pectoral fin larger than pelvic fin, and irregular blotch in the form of a blot in the caudal peduncle absent. The distribution of C. lagosantense now includes also the drainages of rio Paranã (Alto rio Tocantins basin - GO) and rio Mogí- Guaçu (Alto rio Paraná basin - SP).
