Urban Gallery

Lee, Wonkyu 08 July 2016 (has links)
Since the dawn of high-rise buildings, human relationships have been limited by the floors. Compared to the pre-industrialized era where residential streets fostered community socialization, it is safe to say our relationships are constrained to the physical boundaries that surround us. Especially large cities such as New York, Chicago, Tokyo and Hong Kong, citizens lack compassion towards each other, treating neighbors as strangers. The fundamental problem of this phenomenon originates from the stacked floor arrangements that divide people. I believe it's not people's choices to be indifferent to each other; our built environment induces this behavior. The solution is to integrate a new concept of vertical plazas to the design of high-rise buildings. This social space provides citizens not only multiple paths of movement, but also the chances to interact with people outside of the boundary that vertical floors create. This thesis explores the possibilities of the architecture as a contributor of better human relationship. / Master of Architecture

The divine-human relationship in Romans 1-8 in the light of interdependence theory

Kim, Yoonjong January 2018 (has links)
The present thesis aims to analyse the divine-human relationship in Paul's theology, focusing on Paul's portrayal of the relationship in Romans 1-8. The issue of the divine-human relationship has been treated by multiple Pauline studies with various foci, for instance, the issues of agency, the apocalyptic character of Paul's gospel, the concept of charis, and the covenantal relationship. Nevertheless, these approaches often do not pay sufficient attention to the fact that the divine-human relationship in Romans is not static but exhibits progression and development towards a goal. As a result of this, such studies cannot effectively address the significance of the human agent's role in the relationship, a role which changes at each stage of the relationship's development. In order to offer a different perspective, the present thesis utilises a social psychological theory, namely, interdependence theory (IT). IT offers a consistent analytic framework for diagnosing the interactions in a dyadic relationship in terms of the dependency created by each partner's expectations of outcomes. By deploying IT, we explore several key stages of the divine-human relationship and the direction in which the relationship develops throughout Romans 1-8 in order to highlight the significance of the human partners in the course of the development. The key stages include: betrayal (1.18-3.20), restoration (3.21-26; 5.1-11), the oppressive relationship with Sin (5.12-8.11), and the investment for the future (8.12-39). From our investigation, we conclude that although the foundation of the relationship rests on God's initiative, the divine outworking guides the relationship so that it facilitates mutual participation of the human partners in the restoration and development of the relationship toward the ultimate goal. Another contribution of the present study can be found in our attempt to introduce IT to the field of NT studies through our methodological considerations.

In the Shadows of Dominion: Anthropocentrism and the Continuance of a Culture of Oppression

Shields, Christopher A 01 May 2015 (has links)
The oppression of nonhuman animals in Western culture observed in societal institutions and practices such as the factory farm, hunting, and vivisection, exhibits alarming linkages and parallels to some episodes of the oppression of human animals. This work traces the foundations of anthropocentrism in Western philosophy and connects them to the oppressions of racism, sexism, and ethnocentrism. In outlining a uniform theory of oppression detailed through the marginalization, isolation, and exploitation of human and nonhuman animals alike, parallels among the groups emerge as the fused oppression of each exhibits a commonality among them. The analysis conducted within this work highlights the development and sustainment of oppression in the West and illuminates the socio-historical tendencies apparent in the oppression of human and nonhuman animals alike.

Khwaam Jam : Memory

Crane, Keith Lee 07 December 2009 (has links)
Khwaam Jam is an introspective installation of works that explore the perceptions of identity based on memory. Created through the exploration of my past and present, the works of Khwaam Jam utilize the principles and techniques of textile design and production while involving mixed media and new materials in a site-specific installation. This installation is intended to represent my memory on a large scale. The hanging pieces are the focal point of the exhibition and are the physical manifestation of my perception of the categorization and storage of my memories. Memories are the vessels through which we create our identity. An individual’s identity is not only created from the personal experiences of the individual, but also from the experiences of those linked to the individual, whether on an intimate or social level. This overlap of memories is what connects us and helps create both individual and social identities through a series of shared memories.

Abstract: This thesis has as main purpose to present an original contribution in the study of the importance, in the human life, of the professions which were left in the moment of vocational choice. To perform this kind of analysis was necessary, at first, to come back to some concepts about work, without forgetting factors which were present at the moment of the choice, such as the social representation of the professions including the influence of the society, family to create a professional human. In this process it was considered the desire, the function of unconscious and the ways to be in contact with the self. The discussion developed around the historic social, psychological, economic and transpersonal context. This research allowed to present the possibility to raise a further understanding that the choices made during life span do not happen in an exact stage, age or time, but it is present during all life, sometimes forcing us to make decisions that could mean some kind of abdication. This process usually does not have an end in itself, it transcends spaces going beyond birth, life and death, implying expectations, dreams, hopes, desires and decisions, not only by the individual but in her/his family, community, society and all the background. The act of choosing a career apparently looks simple but, it is on a historic process of the family and society and it is impossible to ignore or say if the professions left behind will be totally forgotten but, maybe will possibly be rescued in a harmonious way Considering the aspects pointed, we hope that this research can be used as an additional source of data for everyone who interested in the career planning area as well as those who are trying to understand the process to rescue relegated professions. / Doutorado / Psicologia Educacional / Doutora em Educação

"They don't come alone. They are afraid": Immigrant Integration and Nature Use in Örebro City

Armengol Rodríguez, Gabriela Susana January 2019 (has links)
In a world with increasing cultural diversity, it is necessary to understand the different environmental mindsets and natural encounters created by local governments. As the population transforms, integration endeavors are susceptible to be influenced by biased perceptions of immigrants thereby affecting people’s relationship with nature in the city. Örebro is a city in Sweden that has a high focus on environmental management. It is for this reason that elite interviews of local public officials and the analysis of environmental documents have been conducted to investigate this phenomenon. Currently, the framings found portray immigrants as uneducated, fearful, vulnerable, and their use of nature is often described as ‘deviant’. Swedes, on the other hand, are framed as educated, confident, and comfortable in their experience of the city and its nature. The interviews and documents show that the city has ambitious environmental goals in which the Municipality attempts to reduce social differences. However, it continues to develop plans based on erroneous perceptions of both Immigrants and Swedes leading to a possible increase in the power gap between these groups. Additionally, it leads the Municipality to work on the basis of an unsubstantial amalgamation of immigrant groups rather than considering the differences within these.

Ecce Equus! Egalitära hästgemenskapers erkännande av hästen som subjekt / Ecce Equus! Egalitarian Equine Communities’ Acknowledgement of the Horse as Subject

Pergament Crona, Nicole January 2020 (has links)
Within human animal studies (HAS), as well as within the posthumanistic field in general, it has been pointed out that we still lack knowledge of how animals can be recognized as subjects and agents with the possession of cognitive and social abilities. At the same time, we see a re-evaluation of the human anthropocentric boundary between Man and the Beast – in the academic world as well as in the practice of everyday life. One example is how the prevalent ways of relating to and handling with horses – our traditional equine cultures – are under transition. Norms, attitudes and practices – not least those relating to equestrian sports – are changing; some people even believe in a “paradigm shift”, while others predict a future “horse revolution”. This ethnological contribution to the field of HAS aims to study the acknowledgement of the horse as subject, how it is being expressed and practised by egalitarian communities within the Swedish horse society, and what the implications of that acknowledgement are, for both human and horse. Consisting of interviews and participant observations and seen through the lens of a phenomenological HAS-perspective, the empirical material shows that the egalitarian approach implies ethical and practical consequences. Not only does it entail considerations regarding such things as horse keeping, riding style, competitions, training and conditioning methods – for some individuals it may also implicate a personal change, as they discover the horse’s message of presence and authenticity

As Blind as a Bat : Myths, Misunderstandings and Perceptions of Bats Through the Anthropocene / Blind som en fladdermus : Myter, missförstånd och uppfattningar om fladdermöss genom antropocene

Åhslund Glass, Eleanor January 2020 (has links)
The bat and human relationship has been one of ambiguity through the Anthropocene. Bats have been both persecuted and revered in different cultures and negative perceptions of bats remain widespread, causing concern for the support of bat conservation. Through this thesis I attempt to reach a better understanding of the interrelations between bats and humans, and the factors influencing perceptions of bats. This work lies in the interdisciplinary realm of animal studies, creating a junction between the natural and social sciences through studying and sharing the multispecies story of humans and bats. Through interviews and ethnographic study of bat researchers in Pretoria and an area of Limpopo Province, South Africa, attention is focused on the bat-human relationships from a South African context. A theme central to this work is human emotion, as I believe it is the greatest factor influencing how humans feel and act toward other beings. I examine how emotions towards certain stimuli, in this case bats, are formed through humans’ experiences and knowledge, looking at the different epistemic modes of knowing as other key concepts in this work while bringing attention to the emotional knowledge surrounding bats. Through a better understanding of the bat I believe the prevalent biophobia can transition into biophilia. Therefore, through this study I am to catch a glimpse into the meaningful lives of bats, striving to learn how to better know and understand them. Through this knowing I believe we can learn to love the bat for the unique animal it is, working towards securing the future of species and it’s environment in the midst of the current mass extinction, and hence secure the future of humankind as we move through the Anthropocene.
