Methodology to Develop and Test an Easy-to-use Procedure for the Preliminary Selection of High-performance Systems for Office Buildings in Hot and Humid Climates

Cho, Sool Yeon 2009 August 1900 (has links)
A procedure has been developed for the preliminary selection of high-performance systems for office buildings in hot and humid climates. High-performance building systems and components were surveyed for buildings in the U.S., which were applicable for office buildings in hot and humid climates. This research developed a calibrated DOE-2.1e simulation model of a prototypical large office building. In addition, a Simplified Geometry DOE-2.1e (SGDOE-2.1e) model, was also developed, which used a simplified geometry to demonstrate the use of a proposed easy-to-use tool. The calibrated DOE-2.1e simulation model and the SGDOE-2.1e were compared and showed a good match with each. The SGDOE-2.1e model was then further modified based on the ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1999 commercial building energy code. A code-compliant (ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1999) SGDOE-2.1e simulation model was then used as a baseline for the evaluation of the high-performance measures. A total of 14 high-performance measures were implemented including the energy savings, while the comfort level was maintained based on the ASHRAE comfort zone. In addition to the 14 high-performance measures, solar thermal and solar PV system analysis were integrated with the SGDOE-2.1e simulation model to further reduce the annual energy use. Finally, specifications of the proposed easy-to-use simulation tool were developed. This tool includes options to choose systems from the 14 high-performance measures and solar systems. The proposed easy-to-use systems selection tool can be used for new building practitioners and existing building owners as well to evaluate the performance of their new buildings compared to the ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1999 code-compliant building, and to assess the feasibility of implementing high-performance measures to their existing buildings in terms of energy and cost savings.

Patch-reef and ramp interior facies architecture of the Early Albian Mural Limestone, southeastern Arizona

Aisner, Rachel E. 15 February 2011 (has links)
The Mural Limestone, located in the Mule Mountains to the northeast and southeast of Bisbee, Arizona provides an exceptional outcrop analog for time-equivalent productive reservoirs in the Albian Glen Rose patch-reef play of the Maverick Basin. The Mural Limestone is exposed in a number of folds and east-dipping fault blocks in the Grassy Hill and Paul Spur localities in the Mule Mountains and represents a remnant of a south-facing distally-steepened carbonate ramp that prograded into the Chihuahua Trough in Albian time. This study documents the detailed facies architecture and sequence stratigraphic setting of a multicyclic patch-reef and its associated ramp interior facies at the Paul Spur and Grassy Hill localities, respectively. Small mud-dominated coral-algal buildups (~5 m thick) and tabular biostromes (up to 1.5 m thick) consisting of rudist floatstones are common in the bedded ramp interior carbonates at the Grassy Hill locality in the Mule Mountains 10 km landward of the Paul Spur reef. Buildups in this area are flanked by weakly-cyclic and well-bedded skeletal mud- and grain-dominated packstones. At the Paul Spur locality, Mural facies consist of a 10-35 m thick patch-reef with four distinct reef communities: microbial-Microsolena framestone, algal-Actinastrea boundstone, branching coral-skeletal framestone and caprinid-requienid floatstone. Measured reef dimensions show a distinct windward-leeward margin with reef frame facies extending ~70 m from the margin and extensive leeward rudstone debris and grainstone shoal facies extending a distance of 870 m. Reef and backreef shoal facies exhibit low preserved porosity but petrographic analysis of backreef grainstones shows that primary porosity and permeability was present. These extensive reservoir-prone shoals may be a suitable reservoir target similar to flank rudstones and grainstones of the Maverick Basin reefs. Three aggradational to retrogradational cycles of reef growth are evident at the Paul Spur locality. Retrogradational stacking is consistent with that of time-equivalent Lower Glen Rose patch-reefs in the Maverick Basin of Texas, which suggests a eustatic driver for stratigraphic architecture along the Bisbee/Comanche shelf. Backstepping of reef frame facies in Cycle 3 is interpreted to be time-equivalent to patch-reef development at the Grassy Hill locality. / text

Impact de pratiques agricoles conventionnelles et innovantes sur la fertilité des sols et les acteurs microbiens impliqués dans la zone de savanes humides de Côte d’Ivoire / Smart agricultural land-use changes and their effects on soil microbial communities enhance the maintenance of soil fertility and sustainable crop production in humid savannas of Ivory Coast

Assemien, Embi Féline Laurenza 12 July 2018 (has links)
In West Africa, humid savanna soils are characterized by extremely low concentrations of organic matter, mineral nitrogen, phosphorus and basic cations, which limit primary production. We analyzed how particular changes in land-uses can influence the functioning and fertility of soils, to support the production of agroecosystems in this savanna zone. We compared six land-use types at 9 experimental plots across a landscape: traditional slash-and-burn; conventional chemical fertilization; and innovative use of mulching (tested with or without inserting legumes in the crop rotation). Bare soil was also considered as a reference situation. Soil was sampled on the 54 sub-plots, before and 3 times after treatment inception. We surveyed seven soil enzyme activities (denitrification, nitrification, β glucosidase, N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase, acid and alkaline phosphatase, dehydrogenase), key soil variables (moisture, organic C, mineral and total N, pH, and available P) and the abundances and diversity of microbial communities involved in the N cycle (bacterial and archaeal ammonia oxidizers; Nitrobacter; Nitrospira; and nirS-, nirK- and nosZ-like denitrifiers). Our results showed that (i) C. org, K, Mg and soil enzymes activities decreased with soil depth, reflecting a low rate of nutrient accumulation in soil depth. In contrast, fallow periods (0 to 10 years) did not significantly affect the majority of soil properties, excepted soil Ntot and K, which were high in old fallows. In addition, C. org decreased as a function of the fallow period, but Mg follow-up an inverse trend; (ii) the land use type strongly affects most soil enzymatic activities and the microbial communities involved in nutrient cycling; (iii) innovative mulching practices have a positive impact on soil characteristics and microbial communities, thereby maintaining the maintenance of soil fertility and the sustainability of agricultural production in the long term. According to our results, the practice of mulching, possibly with the insertion of legumes, could be less expensive and more appropriate to progressively and sustainably increase nitrogen availability in these agro-ecosystems

Contribution à la prise en compte des effets de l’environnement sur la tolérance aux dommages d'impact de stratifiés composites / Investigation of environmental effects on impact damage tolerance of composite laminates

Chen, Cheng 27 March 2015 (has links)
The extensive application of composite laminates in aeronautical industries demands a thorough understanding of their mechanical behaviours and damage. The prediction of impact behaviour, impact damage and the associated mechanisms under complex environmental effects remain still an open issue. The effects of various humid ageing conditions (No ageing, 65% relative humidity and 90% relative humidity ageing) and environ mental temperatures (room temperature and 80°C) on the intra-Iaminar and inter-Iaminar properties are characterized. A particular emphasis is laid on the study of different non linear behaviours of in plane shear. A progressive damage model based on continuum damage mechanics is proposed to describe intra laminar mechanical behaviour by taking into account the identified in-plane shear nonlinear phenomenon. This model is then applied in numerical simulation on low velocity impact combined with cohesive law in interface to predict the impact response and associated damage (ie. Fibre failure, matrix cracks and delaminations). The damage model is implemented in LS Dyna as user defined material laws.lmpact tests on laminate coupons with different stratifications are performed to validate the numerical simulation. Good agreement is achieved especially for nonaged material under room temperature between numerical and experimental results in terms of contact force history, platedeflection and impact duration. By means of non-destructive inspection, the impact damage is coherent with predicted results concerning fiber damage location, matrix cracks especially the through thickness delamination.

In the Amazonian Region there is a great concentration of natural resources, however in most cases they are not preserved or explored in a sustainable way. In architecture things are not different. One of the great challenges for the active professionals in architecture and building area is the development of products and constructive systems which allow for the practice of the rational use of the natural resources, to increase the productivity and to reduce the time of execution, to incentive the use of local raw material, generating smaller final cost to the consumer. Especially in Belém, capital of the State of Pará, there are a number of professionals looking for an identity with the region, due to the effort of some architects concerned with appropriate constructions to the hot-humid climate. In this context, wood is a material with high potential, since it is abundant in the nature, and comes from a renewable source. This research has its focus in the Amazonian area, especially in the city of Belém-Pará. Thermal comfort and thermal performance of different alternatives of closing panels in two wood prototypes built in Embrapa - Amazonia Oriental are analyzed through measurements of environmental parameters - air temperature, humidity, globe temperature and air speed, in order to verify which panel is more effective in the control of the climatic demands. A research concerning the possibilities of use of wood in habitation projects of social interest was accomplished, for public or private organs. This research aims to contribute with technical information for the improvement of environmental comfort of wood houses in the hot-humid regions and to look for alternatives to discuss the use of wood as building material in a sustainable way / Mestrado / Edificações / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Arquitetura bioclimática e a obra de Severiano Porto: estratégias de ventilação natural / Bioclimatic architecture and Severiano Porto’s work: natural ventilation strategies

Leticia de Oliveira Neves 30 October 2006 (has links)
Bioclimatic architecture consists in minimizing the impacts of an intervention on the environment and obtaining a close relationship between building and nature. This research emphasizes the importance of natural ventilation as a cooling resource for hot and humid climates, contributing for the study of project strategies that adjust to local context and environment. Analyses the natural ventilation strategies used by the architect Severiano Porto in his buildings, since it is an important kind of solution to obtain thermal comfort in tropical hot and humid weather. It presents the discussion and analysis of three of his main works, placed in the city of Manaus, and the efficiency of the different solutions proposed. The analysis is divided in two steps: first a qualitative and descriptive analysis, based on project examination, where the incorporation of bioclimatic concepts in the buildings is verified and the natural ventilation solutions are identified; followed by a quantitative analysis, based on field studies and measurement of the variables temperature, humidity and air velocity. The result analysis was based on the Mahoney and ASHRAE Standard 55-2004 methods, and data obtained in specialized literature. Natural ventilation strategies could be identified, either cross as stack, allowing a detailed evaluation of performance of the three buildings. The research contributes on the improvement of the architectonic solutions on natural ventilation, on the purpose of valuing the use of passive energy strategies in architecture. Valorizes also Porto’s contribution to the development of an architecture that is attentive to bioclimatic principles.

Étude de la durabilité d'un matériau composite bobiné sous chargements sévères / Study of the durability of a wound composite material under severe loads

Crozatier, Mathilde 13 April 2017 (has links)
Composites materials have been studied for decades. Indeed, the association between lightness and resistance of these structures leads to the development of their use. Their characterization remains an essential point in most researches. This work is part of Sollicitern project, which aims to design a composite water treatment truck, financed by a single interministerial fund. The aim is to study the durability of the composite material retained under severe loads. It thus offers tools to industrialists for adjusting parameters in the tank optimization and the estimation of the lifetime under these various loadings. In the first stage, attention is focused on the integration of the curvature of the structure and therefore of the material in the study. Indeed, it is manufactured by filament winding, which necessarily generates a tubular structure. In a second step, a static characterization is carried out. This part includes, in particular, radial compression tests on the whole tubular structure where an experimental protocol is developed. By coupling the results of these tests with a numerical simulation reproducing the test, the elastic properties of the unidirectional ply are obtained by optimization. In a third and final stage, more specific durability is discussed. Fatigue, impact, wear and aging tests are first carried out independently of one another. The final objective is to associate these different loadings and thus to apprehend their combined effect.

Detection and prediction of biodiversity patterns as a rapid assessment tool in the tropical forest of East Usambara, Eastern Arc Mountains, Tanzania

Sengupta, Nina 08 January 2004 (has links)
As a strategy to conserve tropical rainforests of the East Usambara block of the Eastern Arc Mountains, Tanzania, I developed a set of models that can identify above-average tree species richness areas within the humid forests. I developed the model based on geo-referenced field data and satellite image-based variables from the Amani Nature Reserve, the largest forest sector in the East Usambara. I then verified the model by applying it to the Nilo Forest Reserve. The field data, part of the Tanzanian National Biodiversity Database, were collected by Frontier-Tanzania between 1999 and 2001, through the East Usambara Conservation Area Management Program, Government of Tanzania. The field data used are rapidly collectible by people with varied backgrounds and education. I gathered spectral reflectance values from pixels in the Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (Landsat ETM) image covering the study area that corresponded to the ground sample points. The spectral information from different bands formed the satellite image-based variables in the dataset. The best satellite image logistic regression and discriminant analysis models were based on a single band, raw Landsat ETM mid-infrared band 7 (RB7). In the Amani forest, the RB7-based model resulted in 65.3% overall accuracy in identifying above average tree species locations. When the logistic and discriminant models were applied to Nilo forest sector, the overall accuracy was 62.3%. Of the rapidly collectible field variables, only tree density (number of trees) was selected in the logistic regression and the discriminant analysis models. Logistic and discriminant models using both RB7 and number of trees recorded 76.3% overall accuracy in Amani, and when applied to Nilo, 76.8% accuracy. It is possible to apply and adapt the current set of models to identify above-average tree species richness areas in East Usambara and other forest blocks of the Eastern Arc Mountains. Potentially, managers and researchers can periodically use the model to rapidly assess, monitor, update, and map the tree species rich areas within the forest. The same or similar models could be applied to check their applicability in other humid tropical forest areas. / Ph. D.
