Rebolledo Dujisin, Matías January 2004 (has links)

The Fifth Humor: Ink, Texts, and the Early Modern Body

Polster, Kristen Kayem 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation tracks the intimate relationship between writing and the body to add new dimensions to humoral criticism and textual studies of Renaissance literature. Most humor theory focuses on the volatile, permeable nature of the body, and its vulnerability to environmental stimuli, neglecting the important role that written texts play in this economy of fluids. I apply the principles of humor theory to the study of handwritten and printed texts. This approach demonstrates that the textual economy of the period—reading, writing, publishing, exchanging letters, performing all of the above on stage—mirrors the economy of fluids that governed the humoral body. Early modern readers and writers could imagine textual activities not only as cerebral, abstract concepts, but also as sexual activities, as processes of ingestion and regurgitation. My study of ink combines humoral, historical materialist, and ecocritical modes of study. Materialist critics have examined the quill, paper, and printing press as metaphors for the body; however, the ink within them remains unexamined. This dissertation infuses the figurative body of the press with circulating passions, and brings to bear the natural, biochemical properties that ink lends to the texts it creates. Considering the influence of written and printed materials on the body in early modern poetry and drama requires consideration of the murky liquid from which these texts were composed. For early moderns, writing began with the precise, anatomical slicing of a goose feather, with the crushing of oak galls into wine or rainwater, with the application of heat and ferrous sulfate. These raw materials underwent a violent transformation to fill early modern inkwells. As a result of that mystical concoction, the fluid inside these vessels became humoral. The ink on a page represented one person's passions potentially invading the body of another. Therefore, ink serves as more than a metaphor for any particular humor. Pen and paper work as extensions of the body, and serve at turns as a mechanism of balance or imbalance.

Jazykový humor v reklamě / Language Humour in Advertising

Čimingová, Radka January 2011 (has links)
Title: The Language Humour in Andvertising Author: Radka Čimingová Department: Department of czech language and literature Supervisor: PhDr. Radka Holanová, Ph.D. Abstract: The presented work deals with linguistic analysis of means that frame humour in printed advertising. The analysis of the language humour is based on a selected advertising sample. This sample was used to identify, classify and specify individual linguistic means in more detail. Humour is interpreted as a play on words that is built around updating, change, intentional breaking of established rules, incongruity and around the relationship between language and extralinguistic reality. This play resulting in a comic tone of the advertisement concerns meaning as well as graphic form of individual linguistic means, usage of different varieties of lexis, intertextual connection and the relationship between words and pictures. The work covers all these aspects of the linguistic play on words as well as describes the theoretical context in which the play takes place and specifies the basic terms connected to the subject of the thesis, i.e. advertising and humour. Keywords: Advertising, Humour, Language

Willful Misinterpretation

Hoffman, Peter 16 May 2014 (has links)
My work in painting and sculpture is an ongoing problem-solving activity in which the issues of how to present images or objects, and how to make a compelling piece of art, frequently clash. By combining a sense of earnestness in the means in which my work is made with self-conscious and deliberately awkward choices, my work occupies a place between pleasureful, visual abandon and the calculated, humorously abject. Through combinations of disparate elements, formal choices, and attitudes towards subject matter, I am making work that seeks to create new images within contradictions.

For this, we work with the discursive genre charge because it is a multimodal genre that combines verbal language (the word) with nonverbal language (the image). Besides the multimodality that makes up the chargic text, our option for the textual genre charge is justified by discourses full of meanings and interspersed by humor. For a systematized work with the genre, a didactic sequence was developed and applied, whose objective was to verify the knowledge that the student already possessed, assisting in the development of fundamental skills to increase the reading competence of the multimodal text. Our work is divided in nine stages, dealing with conceptions of language and language, discursive genres, reading of images, methodological approach, workshop description and data analysis respectively.

Towards the constitutional democratic commitment attributed to the State in propitiating an "atmosphere" favorable to satisfaction of the both individual and social rights - in consonance with the supreme valuables of a free society, equalitarian, fraternal, pluralist and without prejudices -, it complies to the present study to analyze such goal specifically in relation to the role in compatibility to freedom with equality in the difference, in face of the phenomenon of the artistic humoristic manifestations of the "politically incorrect" that take as a joke goal vulnerable groups and/or historically stigmatized. Nevertheless, the precise recognition of this compatibility, in the indicated case, it demands a selective analyze duly contextualized to not fall back in undesired fortuitous speech, in overstatement preciosity, in subjectivism of motivation merely emotional, and in tyrannical perspective for the service of majoritarian groups (it may configure, for instance, specie of tyranny of the majority), our for the service of minority groups (it may configure, for instance, specie of tyranny of the “politically correct”). This paper, linked to line scientific "Constitutional jurisdiction and realization of fundamental rights and guarantees" of the FDV (Faculdade de Direito de Vitória), proposes identifying the compromise of the State towards the referred phenomenon, and thereby conceives guidelines apt to guide the legitimate and satisfactory way. Under the dialectic exercise of a constant contraposition of ideas, this paper proposes identifying, raising and confronting some arguments often summoned in the public sphere of debate to discuss, justify, support, enrich and condemn the extreme theories which polarize a reflection around of the thematic. This methodological effort demands a guideline, a conducting wire, a way which guides all the referred contraposition of ideas. Thus, it is the basis theory from which may extract the substratum for a committed confrontation. This paper pursuits the theory of freedom by Philip Pettit, in special his perspective of freedom as no-domination and the freedom as discursive control, and it works the main postulates of the cited theoretical basis. Along the structure of the text, a perspective of the cited author, from the school of the neo-republican thought, is mentioned mainly in chapter 1, while chapter 2 is more focused about the problematization of the phenomenon of artistically humorous manifestation politically inaccurate managed to vulnerable groups and/or historically stigmatized, and for the chapter 3 deals with the confrontation of the problem described in chapter 2, considering the postulates adopted as ideals and valuable in chapter 1. From this proposal of confrontation this research pursuits to answer the following questions: Is it possible, under the light of the fundamental democratic Brazilian order, the State to restrict the content of the determinate artistic humorous “politically incorrect” towards vulnerable groups and/or historically stigmatized? What is it the role of the State towards of this problematized affair, specially towards the constitutional democratic commitment of acting in harmony with the supreme value of a free society, however egalitarian, and of a pluralist society, but without prejudice?

Critical fiction, fictional criticism : Christine Brooke-Rose's experimentalism between theory and practice

Samperi, Ida Maria January 2009 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the mature development of Christine Brooke-Rose’s experimental fiction, taking particular interest in the exemplary texts Between and Thru. I argue that these texts both critically refigure and respond to central aspects of the poststructuralist debate. I investigate Between and Thru specifically in relation to the theories of Irigaray, Barthes (in the case of Between), Derrida and Kristeva (in the case of Thru), demonstrating how the two novels develop these theorists’ core tenets in an innovative manner that critics have failed to recognise up to this point. Starting – in the first chapter – from Brooke-Rose’s first four conventional novels, I explore the issues which lie at the basis of the experimental direction she comes to take, and investigate her first two experimental novels, Out and Such. The second chapter explores Between in relation to the debate over language and identity, whereas the third chapter investigates the way the novel addresses the gender issue as related to language. The fourth chapter concentrates on Thru’s narrative technique in order to better elucidate – in the fifth and sixth chapters – how the novel succeeds in resolving both the tension generated by the notion of language as linked to the representation of an ontologically unstable reality, and the narrative anxiety deriving from the dispute around the death of the author and the ontological status of characters. The seventh chapter offers an overview of Brooke-Rose’s fictional output after Thru, while the eighth and final chapter aims at further positioning Brooke- Rose in the context of the postmodern debate, showing how her work represents a countertendency to the nihilist attitude engendered by the major critical tenets of postmodernism. The thesis thus sheds light on the importance and role of Brooke-Rose as a highly innovative intellectual figure, while rethinking some of the main literary implications of the postmodernist debate.
