A qualitative study of humour theory.

Gordon, Robert Lawrence Payet. January 1998 (has links)
This qualitative study of humour theory provides a broad descriptive account of the current status of humour theory within the multidisciplinary context of human and social studies. The nature of qualitative research is examined in terms of its relevance to humour research studies. Qualitative research is found to be a generic term applying to a range of types of data collecting approaches that fall outside the ambit of quantitative paradigms. Quantitative methods are shown as having limited applicability to humour studies which are primarily reliant on data collecting. Humour is examined in terms of its biological, phylogenetic and historical antecedents. The emergence of schools of humour theory is discerned; and a study is made of changing social perceptions of humour in terms of the 'ruling discourse'. Humour theory is examined in terms of parameters of contemporary research which entails the processes of defining humour and theorizing about humour in terms of a variety of variables. Critiques are provided of Murdock and Ganim's macro-level descriptive study of humour definitions and theories as well as of Apter's reversal theory of humour. Reflectivity is employed as a qualitative approach to analyse the personal experience of a 'humorous event'. Attention is also given to the relevance of orality, oral tradition and anthropological perspectives to humour research. Finally, recommendations are made for further research. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, 1998.

Ett skratt är den kortaste vägen mellan två människor : Betydelsen av humor i omvårdnaden / A laugh is the shortest way between two people : The importance of humour in nursing

Ericson, Andreas, Karlsson, Hannes January 2013 (has links)
Background: Humour has long been seen as something beneficial and has during the recent decades become a subject for increased research, despite this it appears that there is not enough evidens to implement humour as a tool in today´s care, despite it´s health promoting effects humour is assigned. Aim: The aim of this study was to highlight the importance of humour in nursing. Method: A literature review where the materials from ten qualitative studies were analyzed. Results: The results are presented in five themes: Humour is a tool to mediate messages, humour builds good relations, humour as therapeutic play, humour is a tool to maintain the good patient persona and when used humour did not give the desired results. The results prove that humour is a effective instrument to strengthen and create social relations and also that humour has a health promoting effect, but also that humour has to be used with caution as it can damage a social relation if used incorrectly. Clinical significance: Humour is a good instrument to improve the nurse patient relationship and to promote good health in today´s care. There though a need for more research on the subject humour to strengthen its validity as a good instrument. Conclusion: Humour is useful to both patients and nursing staff which can be used for many purposes within care.

Do humor da crônica à crônica de humor / Of the chronicle's humour to chronicle of humour

Fabiana dos Anjos Pinto 27 March 2013 (has links)
Based on the presupposition that humor is a phenomenon that is usually present in chronicles, this thesis aims at investigating the origins of such relation. Why are diverse readers, language and journalism students categorical when it comes to this association? Moreover, if humor is a remarkable feature of the genre, how are the strategies that enable it characterized? In order to answer these inquiries, we present the trajectory of the humorous phenomena in chronicles prior and subsequent to the arrival of the Press in Brazil. Besides, we have worked with the semiolinguistic theory of the discourse with a corpus taken from O Globo a Brazilian newspaper. The corpus stems specifically from the communication contract and the modes of discursive-textual organization. Our main aim, in summary, is to investigate to what extent various discoursive procedures can explain the operation of humor in contemporary journalistic chronicles, contributing to their becoming of an icon of seduction in the different sections of newspapers, which eventually lead them to turn into entertainment columns
