The objectives were to identify the concepts of medical students about being a doctor and the medical practice, to identify, at different stages of medical school, the students' perceptions about the professional identity, understanding if the processes of change in curricula of medical schools are related to professional identity formation and to identify the concepts of medicine and the medical profession to students at different stages of the course. For this, was developed an exploratory and qualitative methodological approach, using various techniques of field work, such as participant observation, interviews, discussion groups and use of information from social networks. It was noticed, with the research that medical students bring representations about the profession from before entering the university, many of them responsible for choosing a career, such as social status and the possibility of acquiring economic capital. Students go through processes of socialization during the course to acquire medical knowledge and the normative precepts of medicine. In the beginning of the course, neophytes maintains an idealist position, which is changing towards the acquisition of strong technical expertise focused on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. To change the focus of training from the disease to care about people the curricula of medical schools are becoming, in the midst of processes of resistance due to professional power. Constructing new identities in the context of curriculum change is extremely difficult, because the training is crystallized in the maintenance of professional power and the closing of the profession towards people and other professions.

Social Reform Through Music Education and the Establishment of a National Identity in Venezuela

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: The Fundación del Estado para el Sistema Nacional de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela (FESNOJIV), also known as El Sistema, is an internationally recognized social phenomenon. By promoting social reform and development through music education, El Sistema is enriching the lives of thousands of impoverished youth in Venezuela by providing a nurturing environment for children in government-sponsored orchestras, choirs, and bands. In this thesis, I contend that the relationship between music education and social reform cultivates sociocultural ideas and expectations that are transmitted through FESNOJIV's curriculum to the participating youth and concert attendees. These ideas and El Sistema's live and recorded performances engage both the local Venezuelan community and the world-at-large. Ultimately, I will show that FESNOJIV has been instrumental in creating, promoting, and maintaining a national Venezuelan identity that is associated with pride and musical achievement. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Music 2013

Ung i Orten : - En studie om identitetsskapandet hos ungdomar som växer upp i ett socialt utsatt område / Youths in a socially disadvantaged area : - A study about creation of identity in a Swedish suburban area

Billevik, Joakim January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate the identity formation of youths who grow up in a so called "socially disadvantaged area". The study also aims to investigate how collective representations (collectively accepted narratives) of the neighbourhood affects the youth’s social identity. This by examining narratives from young people who grow up in the district of Vivalla in Örebro, Sweden. The study shows, like previous studies, that the identity is formed in relation to the neighbourhood. The study also shows that the collective representations affects youths. Where they, from others, are demanded moral responsibility for the events in the area. Their identities also receive forms of symbolic violence when trying to fit in the society. Because of this, the youths tend to form a resistant identity to change the narratives of the suburb and the concept of "immigrants". The symbolic violence and the lack of association with the main city works as a subterfuge to avoid other neighbourhoods.

The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend : The Role of Common Enemies in Post-Civil War Superordinate Identity Formation

Golubitskiy, Yevgeniy January 2017 (has links)
This paper contributes to the literature on post-conflict identity in exploring the question: which conditions favor the success of superordinate identity formation among former conflict parties in post-civil war societies? Building on the social psychological literature on terror management theory (TMT) and optimal distinctiveness theory (ODT), it argues that the presence of a common enemy among former conflict parties increases the likelihood of successful superordinate identity formation. An in-depth qualitative comparative study on national identity in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) after the 1992-1995 civil war and Lebanon after the 1975-1990 civil war is conducted in order to test the theoretical arguments of this paper. The empirical findings lend preliminary support to this hypothesis, yet also point to limits in the study’s theoretical framework, including the instability of an identity predicated upon a common enemy which may not exist in the future. This paper also identifies two alternative explanations to account for the outcomes observed in the two cases, including differences in the nature of the conflicts and the different ways consociationalism has been implemented in the two countries.

Mångkulturalitetens plats i skönlitteraturen idag : En ideologikritisk analys av "LasseMajas Detektivbyrå" med fokus på hur mångkulturen framställs och värderas / How the multiculturalism is being portrayed in fiction today : An ideologically critical analysis of "LasseMajas Detektivbyrå" focusing on attitudes and values towards today´s multiculturalism

Henriksson, Elin January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this report is to find out what kind of values and attitudes towards today’s multiculturalism that is being reflected in modern fiction. It will also try to find out how those values can affect the reader, and how they conform with the values on the subject which our school is advocating. To answer these questions, I am going to do an ideologically critical analysis of the chosen material. In this case, it consists of 4 books from the series of “LasseMajas Detektivbyrå” written by the author Martin Widmark. The analysis is focusing on the characters with foreign ethnicity and how they are portrayed in the books.  The result of the analysis shows that those characters are portrayed in a stereotypically way in all the books. Although we reach the conclusion that it is not done on purpose with negative values. The author is rather trying to make us pay attention to the multiculturalism from a positive point of view, and show how it can enrich our society. Due to the simplicity of the language and the illustrations as an extra support, his books become easily accessible for many children. This also helps spreading the positive values on to a large group of readers. The values which these books are communicating goes well in agreement with our school. Therefore, the books can be considered as good examples of fiction that can be used in today’s classroom.

The Attached Meanings of Integration: A Discursive Construction of a Danish National Identity and the ‘Othering’ of Non-Western Immigrants in the ‘Ghetto Plan’

Dix Lind, Nicholas January 2019 (has links)
This thesis examines how integration as a category of practice or as an emic concept functions in political discourses. In doing so, this study delimit itself by focusing on the problematization of non-western immigrants in socially vulnerable residential areas in the whitepaper ‘A Denmark Without Parallel Societies – No Ghettos in 2030’ presented by the Danish Government in March 2018. By adopting a theoretical framework of Umut Özkirimli’s take on nationalism, the concept of ‘othering’ and Carol Bacchi’s WPR approach to policy analysis, this paper finds that integration as a category of practice function as a code word for differentiation in identity formation where the ‘othering’ of non-western immigrants and socially vulnerable residential areas confirm a Danish national identity. Thus, this thesis contributes to a framework addressing the discursive construction of a Danish national identity in the societal debate on integration through the analysis of policies.

The "American Sublime" in Symphonic Music of the United States: Case Study Applications of a Literary and Visual Arts Aesthetic

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: The American sublime aesthetic, discussed frequently in literature and art of the United States, is equally manifest in the nation’s symphonic music as a concurrent and complementary aesthetic. The musical application of the American sublime supports and enriches current scholarship on American musical identity, nationality, and the American symphonic enterprise. I suggest that the American sublime forms an integral part of nineteenth-century American music and is key to understanding the symphony as a genre in the United States. I discuss American symphonic works by Anthony Philip Heinrich, George Frederick Bristow, William Henry Fry, Dennison Wheelock, and Florence Beatrice Price, aided by an analytical tool which I developed, to illuminate my appraisal of the nineteenth-century American symphonic enterprise. Their compositions contribute meaningfully to the complex history of identity formation for both American composers and the nation. In focusing on these incorporations of the sublime by white composers and composers of color from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, my research demonstrates how the American sublime expanded and transformed to better accommodate the country’s diverse citizenry, despite the marginalization of some. The nineteenth-century trans-Atlantic dialogue between Americans and their European contemporaries sustained a “distinctly cosmopolitan cultural ethos,” a phenomenon also described by Douglas Shadle as “one of the most vibrant intercultural exchanges in all of Western music history.” This dialogue shaped the cultural formation of identity for many American composers throughout the century and provided the foundation for a symphonic repertoire, which became internationally recognized for the first time as “American.” In this cosmopolitan environment, the Americanization of the sublime aided in the rebranding of long-established European artistic expressions like the symphony, while perpetuating the idealization of the nation’s geography, its people, and its beliefs. Perhaps most importantly, the American sublime supported the widely held belief in American exceptionalism and manifest destiny. The applicability of the American sublime to various genres made it a useful tool to assert autonomy and individuality in forms such as the symphony. For this reason, a revaluation of American symphonic music and its relation to the American sublime amplifies the significance of this repertoire. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2020

Embrace the good, refuse the bad: Haitian American children's selective engagement with the United States

Ritger, Carly 09 August 2021 (has links)
This qualitative research study investigates the perceptions of children, parents, and staff members at a Boston multi-service nonprofit for Haitian immigrants. It is an exploration of how children cultivate their identity, and how a center for immigrants functions in the current sociopolitical climate. There is an evidentiary lacuna of qualitative explorations on children of immigrants’ perceptions and health. The COVID-19 pandemic makes this issue even more temporally relevant, as new data suggests structural factors make marginalized groups, such as people of color and immigrants, more vulnerable to infection and death. This study will contribute to the body of work on children of immigrants’ health by 1) analyzing the unique child perspective, as opposed to focusing entirely on adults or using quantitative child measures, 2) employing qualitative data to create more robust depictions of lived experiences, 3) and situating data in the particular Haiti/U.S. historical, political relationship. This study’s methodology includes ethnographic participant observation during regular visits to a nonprofit organization for immigrants (Fanmi Nou) over the course of several months, semi-structured video interviews with children, parents, and staff members of this organization, and content analysis of documents produced by Fanmi Nou. Through different waves of migration to the United States, children of Haitian immigrants have lived bicultural lives. In the last four years, however, biculturalism and transnationality have come under growing assault. As a reactionary response to overt hostility, parents, staff members at Fanmi Nou, and children themselves, actively promote a Haitian identity in children. Living under an administration characterized by its hostility to immigrants, Haitian American children pick and choose which aspects of American life to welcome and which to reject. Through a multi-service nonprofit organization, these children and their families selectively engage with the U.S. political, educational, and social systems. I argue that these children and this organization strategically support the healthy development of self under these new restrictions.
