The role of history in the recent Mexican novel : a study of five historical novels by Elena Garro, Carlos Fuentes, Fernando del Paso, Paco Ignacio Taibo II and Rosa Beltran

Rafael, Laura January 2007 (has links)
This thesis sets out to investigate the development of the recent historical novel in Mexico by examining a corpus of five novels. Elena Garro’s 'Los recuerdos del porvenir' (1963) represents the final point of the novel of the Revolution and it is the link with the recent historical novel. Carlos Fuentes’ 'Terra Nostra' (1975) and Fernando del Paso’s 'Noticias del Imperio' (1978) belong to the group containing the postmodern historical novel. 'Terra Nostra' summarizes all the concerns of postmodernism and can be considered as a paradigm of this current of thought. 'Noticias del Imperio' seeks a reconciliation between history and literature in an attempt to get closer to the historical truth. Paco Ignacio Taibo II’s 'La lejanía del Tesoro' (1992) is a representative novel in the way it melds history with the mystery novel, developing the genre of the historical thriller. Lastly, Rosa Beltrán’s 'La corte de los ilusos' (1995), and in particular its treatment of history is pertinent to this thesis due to the fact that women have been traditionally silenced by official history. This novel gives them a voice. From its beginnings, the historical novel confronted the problem of being questioned for its lack of accuracy when dealing with the past. This skepticism sparked a long lasting debate that initially degraded the historical novel as secondary genre that could never contribute to historical knowledge. However, as a result of recent theories that seek to defend the poetic nature of history, a theory developed initially by Hayden White, the recent historical novel has sought to debunk historiography’s claim to be the only possible way to recount the past. This thesis advances the theory that the recent historical novel in Mexico is the result of a search for a genuine identity, as well as a quest to develop an alternative, yet truthful, interpretation of a past whose true nature has been distorted by decades of historical officialdom. This process is seen in a context of increasing democratisation and globalisation.

This The present dissertation analyzes the creation of Law nº 26 of September 22, 1835, which suspended in the province of Pará the § 6º, 7º, 8º, 9º and 10º paragraphs of Article 179 of the Constitution for a period of six months, as an extraordinary measure taken by the deputies and senators of the Brazilian Parliament to contain the “revolt” hut, as well as the sending of two highly respected marshals (Jorge Rodrigues and Soares d’Andrea) to restore the imperial order in the province, using the said Law as a strategy in war against the huts. Thus, this dissertation goes beyond the understanding of the discussions in the Parliament between the deputies and senators that led to the creation of the Law, but also aims to understand how the marshals Jorge Rodrigues and Soares d’Andrea interpreted and used the Law in the fight against cabins Finally, he analyzes the strategies of “pacification” and repression in the province of Pará created by Soares d’Andrea during his government, such as recruitment for the police guard and the corps of workers and resistance to these recruitments.

Rodríguez Pérez, Raimundo Antonio 24 September 2010 (has links)
Social reproduction and social rise of the aristocracy during the Early Modern Age are explained by the king's service and marriage with important houses of the nobility, associated with the court. The familiar and politics have allowed to study the evolution of lineage Fajardo, located at the top of the society because it was one of the most important families of the Spanish nobility. The lineage has been analyzed taking into account both the main trunk (Marquis of los Vélez) and several side branches, second son and illegitimate. The period chosen covers the period of the Catholic Monarchs and 'Austrias Mayores' (Charles V and Philip II). During this period the aristocracy is experiencing a profound transformation that leads to the function eminently warrior to another courtisan. To understand the changes and continuities have been studied the relationships of kinship, friendship and patronage-clientelism.

It analyses, in particular, the acting of a group of societies organized by craftsmen and workers from different kinds of manual occupations during a time when the State Council, a consultative body of the monarchic government, took care to ensure the prerogatives of rules for the action of the civil and mercantile associations created in the imperial period. This process initiated a vast movement performed by many social groups interested in achieving the legal and political recognition of its entities, establishing deep connections between forms of domination and associative practices. The dissertation shows from the examination of the offered assistances and the ways of highlighting the social and financial environment, that the mutual occupational organizations performed a significant role in that framework of relations, pointing attitudes, expectations and values which belong to the universe of work and social protection / Mestrado / Historia Social / Mestre em História
