A Republic of the Arts: Constructing Nineteenth-Century Art History at the Musée national du Luxembourg, 1871-1914

Clark, Alexis January 2014 (has links)

Before the rise of the ubiquitous MOCA (museum of contemporary) there was the Mus&eacutee national du Luxembourg that since its foundation in 1818, served as the first museum anywhere dedicated to contemporary art. Yet the Luxembourg has been left to lurk in the shadows of art history. Best remembered for its mismanagement of the Caillebotte Bequest (1894-1897) that left the French state as the beneficiary of several dozen Impressionist canvases, the Luxembourg has been dismissed as epitomizing official support for an exhausted academicism.

This dissertation has sought to correct these misconceptions of the museum and the Third Republic Fine Arts administration. It provides an institutional history of the museum under the early Third Republic (1871-1914) that reconsiders how different interpretations of republicanism informed its curators' policies and practices. Information culled from archives, official publications, art criticism, and even tourist brochures, has revealed that in the 1890s and especially the 1900s, the museum's curators embraced the politics of solidarism. Applying solidarist principles such as eclecticism, tolerance, and commitment to public education, its curators defended their acquisition of both avant-garde and academic works of art. These principles further spurred curators to trace the spectrum of contemporary painterly styles to French artist tradition. In so doing, the Luxembourg's administrators implicitly upheld republicanism as a characteristically, even classically, French ideology that, in its translation into paint and institutional policies, testified to the nation's continued cultural, artistic, and political supremacy.
/ Dissertation

The study analyze mainly the development of the narrator and the main character Virginia, as the most expressive categories in the novel, as well as categories of disruption. The research has also the purpose of highlighting the avant-garde and modern aesthetics, especially of Impressionism, which reverberate in Lispector's writing this book. The whole investigation has the purpose of establishing O lustre as a work of great aesthetic and literary quality, demystifying the critical position which defends the little relevance of the book. In fact, in this book Lispector was able to transgress radically Brazilian prose in the 20th century

This work proposes a critical study of the Raul Brandão’s (1867-1930) symbolist narratives. He is a Portuguese author who belongs to 1890 generation. We want to relate in the Brandão’s narrative fiction, values of Decadentism-Symbolism It could be the favorite thematic of the author or the narrative form to express his themes. Additionally, we intend to show the dialogue between the whole work of Raul Brandão, unrolling the importance of his first short-stories in the book Impressões e Paisagens (1890). Thus, we want to study and to reveal literary texts in the symbolist prose, which the critics do not search enough. Using the short-story and narrative theory to support us, we study the author’s contribution to the Portuguese narrative history. The main object of our study is two short-stories that are the most meaningful of his first book: “A Maria Trolha” and “O Homem do cancro”. Therefore, we study the presenting themes, the acting characters and the construction of the short-stories, which blended into naturalistics, symbolistics and impressionistics elements that prove to be pioneer in the bounds of his first compositions.

Impressionismo em preto e branco: desenho e gravura em Félix Bracquemond / Impressionism in black and white: drawing and engraving in Félix Bracquemond

Priscila Sacchettin 04 April 2008 (has links)
This dissertation focuses the impressionist engraving , through an analysis of the concept of drawing, and its relations with the engraving made in France, at the second half of the XIX century. Therefore, the concept of drawing such as developed on the essay Du Dessin et de la Couleur (1885) by Félix Bracquemond (1833 - 1914), was taken as a guiding one. I intent to demonstrate how this concept was formed according to the impressionists researches on engraving.

Lilian Dalila Trindade de Camargo Papini 14 October 2015 (has links)
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1863-1901) is present in the collection of the São Paulo Museum of Art Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) with eleven artworks that expose different moments of the artist\'s journey, encompassing more than twenty years of production. This research proposes to examine this set of artworks, as well as situations of acquisition and their previous collections at the entrance to the museum\'s collection, We seek to understand them within the museum space as historical objects, which allow us to understand the work and the artist\'s life, as well as issues posed by the trajectory of these works to the museum.
