Manuel Ponce: Father of Mexican Nationalistic Music

The influence of Manuel Ponce (1882-1948) in early 20th-century Mexico serves as a precursor to the emerging nationalistic sounds sought after the 1910 revolution. Despite the challenges posed by Mexico's music education system, Ponce's private tutelage enabled him to achieve European standards, marking a significant progress in the broader efforts of 19th-century Mexican musicians to attain proper musical training. Ponce's method of creating an authentic Mexican sound involved reconstructing folklore music, blending it with European styles, and aligning himself with the Indigenismo movement. His compositional trajectory, marked by trips to Europe and distinct musical periods such as Romanticism, Nationalism, and Modernism, reflects adaptation to historical, social, and cultural events. Upon his return to Mexico, he undertook the reform of teaching methods at the conservatory, adapting European approaches to better suit the learning styles of Mexican students. This study examines Ponce's formative experiences, educational background, and early compositions, emphasizing his integration of folk tunes into classical forms and his role in shaping Mexican musical identity. It highlights the efforts of 19th-century Mexican composers to carve a nationalistic sound and Ponce's pivotal role as a bridge between European traditions and the developing nationalistic movement, ultimately contributing to the construction of Mexican cultural hegemony

In the same way, in some states in Brazil official programs of medicinal plants have been registered and to follow the plant species used in the folk phytotherapy ethnoguided methodologies are applied mainly ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology. From the Pharmaceutical Sciences Ethopharmacy was elaborated, which has been worldwide used to approach medicinal plants and to evaluate the remedies prepared from them. The general aim of this work is to contribute for the consolidation of Ethnopharmacy and the implementation of the PNPMF in the state of Pará, bringing information collected about indication of medicinal plants, preparation and administration of vegetal remedies and problems related to the use of them. More specifically, it aims to determine the regional nosogeography, to identify and to select the used phytotherapeutical resources for the treatment of the prevalent illnesses, to know and to characterise from the pharmaceutical point of view the remedies made with vegetable base, as well as elaborating cards with information about selected vegetables, these are other objectives considered here. The tool to reach these objectives is the ethnopharmaceutical survey which associates elements of other ethnoguided methods with the content of the Pharmaceutical Care. Applied in eighty six communities of the city, at two moments, first in the year 2000 and in March/April 2008, the method supplied data which were tabulated using Excel to make tables and graphs. Thus, 91 illnesses, 236 plants species, distributed through 72 botanical families, and in 7 different forms of administration. Thirty eight adverse events could also be identified. Cards with botanical, chemical and ethnopharmaceutical information were elaborated for the four plants species with highest relative citation frequencies. / No município de IgarapéMiri, como em todo o estado do Pará, é comum o uso de plantas medicinais para o tratamento de muitas doenças. Da mesma maneira, em vários estados do país se têm registrado programas oficiais de plantas medicinais e para mapear as espécies vegetais utilizadas na fitoterapia popular aplicamse metodologias etnoorientadas tais como a etnobotânica e a etnofarmacologia, principalmente. A partir das ciências farmacêuticas elaborouse a etnofarmácia, que vem sendo empregada em nível mundial para levantar plantas medicinais e avaliar os remédios preparados a partir delas. O objetivo geral desse trabalho é contribuir para a consolidação da Etnofarmácia e para a implementação da PNPMF no estado do Pará, trazendo informações colhidas sobre indicação de plantas medicinais, preparação e administração de remédios vegetais e problemas relacionados ao uso deles. Mais especificamente, visa determinar a nosogeografia regional, identificar e selecionar os recursos terapêuticos vegetais utilizados para o tratamento das doenças prevalentes, conhecer e caracterizar do ponto de vista farmacêutico os remédios a base de vegetais citados. Elaborar fichas com informações sobre vegetais selecionados nos moldes de uma monografia são outros objetivos aqui propostos. A ferramenta empregada para atingir os objetivos é o levantamento etnofarmacêutico que associa elementos de outros métodos etnoorientados com os preceitos da Assistência Farmacêutica. Aplicado em oitenta e seis comunidades do município, em dois momentos, o primeiro no ano 2000 e o segundo em março/abril de 2008, o método forneceu dados que foram tabulados em planilhas Excel e plotados em gráficos. Assim, foram detectados 91 agravos, 236 espécies vegetais, distribuídas em 72 famílias botânicas, e sete formas de administração diferentes. 38 eventos adversos também puderam ser identificados. As dez espécies com maior freqüência relativa de citação tiveram levantados seus dados bibliográficos que, associados aos dados etnofarmacêuticos, poderão ser utilizados para compor um Memento Fitoterápico do Município.

Este breve texto intenta llamar la atención sobre ciertas preguntas en torno al carácter inédito que ha mantenido, por casi medio siglo, un archivo etnográfico acopiado por J. M. Arguedas. Entre ellas, nos preguntamos si tal condición estaría ligada a la forma en que Arguedas concebía el saber de la antropología. / This text aims to make some questions about the reasons why an ethnographic archive joined by Jose Maria Arguedas has remained unpublished until now. Mainly, it is suggested that this lack of attention to a source like this may be related to a the way in which Arguedas conceived the production of knowledge in Anthropology.

Este trabalho cria um diálogo entre dois movimentos literários de vanguarda surgidos nos anos vinte do século passado no Peru e no Brasil: por um lado, a vanguarda indigenista de Puno dirigida por Gamaliel Churata, que afirmava tanto sua identidade regional e étnica, como os procedimentos vanguardistas empregados para expressá-la; e, por outro lado, seu contemporâneo brasileiro, a Antropofagia de Oswald de Andrade, que desde a metrópole paulista reunia elementos semelhantes (o indígena e o impulso vanguardista) com distintos propósitos. A tese pretende refletir sobre a imagem do indígena elaborada por ambos os movimentos nas revistas Boletín Titikaka e Revista de Antropofagia e que está subjacente em El pez de oro de Churata e em Serafim Ponte Grande de Andrade; esta imagem foi usada como plataforma simbólica a partir da qual enfrentar as configurações históricas, literárias e sociais hegemônicas, e elaborar um projeto de modernidade nacional. Os limites e aporias de ambos os programas, que falavam através de uma voz emprestada e ausente, não ressaltados com a intenção de mostrar as contradições da sociedade em que foram gestados. / The present work creates a dialogue between two literary avant-garde movementes that emerged in the twenties of last century in Peru and Brazil: on the one hand, the avant-garde\'s indigenismo of Puno directed by Gamaliel Churata, that claimed both their regional and ethnic identity, as the procedures avant-garde use to express it; and, on the other hand, his Brazilian contemporary, the Oswald de Andrade\'s Anthropophagy, who from the São Paulo metropolis brought together similar elements (the indigenous and the avant-garde impulse) with different intentions. The thesis intends to discuss the indigenous\'s picture drawn by both movements in the journals Boletín Titikaka and Revista de Antropofagia and present in El pez de oro by Churata and Serafim Ponte Grande by Andrade; this image was used as a symbolic platform which deal with historical, literary and perplexities of both programs, which spoke through an absent voise, are underlined with the intention of showing the contradictions of their society.

La Narrativa Indigenista en Argentina

This dissertation begins from the premise that indigenista narrative has always been considered by critics as literature produced in the Andean region by mostly Peruvian authors, and to a lesser extent, by those from Latin American countries with a significant indigenous population. My dissertation proposes that an expanded definition of the indigenous novel to include Argentine authors offers an exciting possibility for rearticulating the nature of this important movement of Latin American narrative fiction. It analyzes five major works written during the expansion of the indigenista movement (1920-1940) by authors born in different regions of Argentina. Moreover, while it has been widely held that the first neoindigenista novels were written by the two Peruvian masters of indigenismo, Ciro Alegría and José María Arguedas in 1941, this dissertation demonstrates that El salar, published in 1936 by Argentinian author Fausto Burgo actually deserves that distinction. The analytical frame for my work draws on the groundbreaking contributions of Antonio Cornejo Polar, Tomás Escajadillo and others in recasting its vision of indigenista narrative.

Sostiene que en la obra Choza se halla una semiosis decolonizadora que da cuenta de las relaciones conflictivas entre el horizonte de sentido andino y la racionalidad occidental al incorporar, a través de sus instancias enunciativas intersticiales, estrategias expresivas que responden al imaginario andino. Una de ellas, la más importante, es la organización ritual, sustentada en la oralidad, que contribuye a reforzar el carácter decolonial de la obra. Con ello la poética de Miranda se aleja del indigenismo, va más allá de la letra y la escritura y se erige como una propuesta que surge desde los bordes, disímil, intercultural y, por ello mismo, vigente, en el panorama de la poesía peruana contemporánea.

Los ilustradores de Julio C. Tello : la influencia del indigenismo telúrico-arqueológico en su obra, 1935-1965

Esta tesis analiza la influencia que tuvo el pensamiento de Julio C. Tello en algunas obras de sus principales ilustradores. Se ha denominado al pensamiento de Tello como “Indigenismo telúrico-arqueológico”, vinculándolo y diferenciándolo respecto a otros planteamientos indigenistas. Se analiza esta influencia tanto en su ilustración de las investigaciones del arqueólogo como en su producción artística independiente. Se ha tenido presente la relación de su trabajo con antecedentes tanto foráneos como locales. La presente investigación identifica en algunas piezas halladas al Indigenismo telúricoarqueológico como influencia determinante y la relaciona con el contexto socio-laboral de Tello y sus colaboradores, así como con la trayectoria del colectivo artístico Grupo Waman Poma. Se analizan ilustraciones de los archivos AT-MNAAH y JCT-MAA-UNMSM, obras inéditas representativas del Indigenismo telúrico-arqueológico, piezas elaboradas en defensa de las huacas del valle de Lima, y trabajos artísticos elaborados por los artistas estudiados divergentes tanto del Indigenismo telúrico-arqueológico como del “peruanismo” de Sabogal y discípulos y otras manifestaciones del Indigenismo local, tales como las diversas formas de Costumbrismo. Se lleva a cabo la presentación y análisis de material inédito, del pensamiento de Tello, de las trayectorias de los artistas, y su defensa de huacas del valle de Lima con el fin de definir, delimitar y diferenciar al Indigenismo telúricoarqueológico de otros Indigenismos y evidenciar su influencia en estos creadores. Este estudio considera a los ilustradores de Tello como artistas por su formación artística profesional y los alcances de su producción. Estos artistas obtuvieron poco reconocimiento por sus prioridades profesionales, carecer de recursos y contactos para el éxito de su labor, y estar a contra corriente respecto a las vanguardias de su contexto. Representaron una retaguardia de marcada originalidad que expone un enfoque inédito dentro del conglomerado de discursos que, en la primera mitad del siglo XX, buscaron comprender lo indígena. Tello’s thinking on the works of the most important illustrators that worked for him. For this study, Tello’s thinking has been characterized as a type of “telluric indigenismo,” and was both connected and distinguished from other types of indigenismos. Tello’s influence was analyzed in the illustrators’ pieces for Tello, and in their independent artistic production. The illustrators’ works were analyzed in relation to local and foreign precedents. The present investigation identifies Tello’s telluric-archaeological indigenismo as the main influence of some of the illustrators’ pieces. The investigation also draws connections between the pieces and Tello’s and his illustrators’ social and work environment, and with the artistic collective Grupo Waman Poma. For that purpose, pieces by Tello’s illustrators from the AT-MNAAH and JCT-MAA-UNMSM archives were discussed. The illustrations analyzed include: previously unpublished works that show the influence of such telluric-archaeological indigenismo, pieces produced to defend the Lima Valley archaeological ruins, artworks that explored themes beyond both the “telluric-archaeological indigenismo” and Sabogal’s and his disciple´s “peruanismo,” and other forms of local indigenismo such as variants of costumbrismo. This thesis displays and analyzes unpublished material, as well as Tello´s thought, the artists’ output, and their defense of the Lima Valley archaeological sites. These analyses were developed to identify and distinguish telluric-archaeological indigenismo from other indigenismos, and to evidence its presence in the illustrators’ works. Based on the illustrator’s artistic training and in the quality of their output, this study acknowledges the illustrators’ status as artists. These artists achieved little recognition because of their specific professional goals, their lack of economic means and social network in the local art scene, and the fact that their work went against the avant-garde trends of their context. The illustrators played the role of a “rearguard” of remarkable originality. Their works evidence a unique development (still insufficiently studied) among the diverse discourses that attempted to understand the “indigenous man” in Peru during the first half of the twentieth century. Face a essas colocações, o marcante nestas narrativas se deve ao fato de desvelarem as estratégias utilizadas por seus interlocutores a fim de criar laços de sociabilidade e, por assim dizer, alcançar o sucesso nos seus intentos particulares e vinculados à sociedade indigenista. Deste modo, John Henry Elliott, Joaquim Francisco Lopes e José Joaquim Machado de Oliveira, a partir de seus vínculos com o barão de Antonina, embrenharam-se pelos sertões meridionais a fim de mapear, descrever e catalogar dados referentes às rotas terrestres e fluviais que ligavam Curitiba ao Baixo Paraguai e, no decorrer deste processo, observar as formas, as cores, as gentes que coloriam as paisagens de seus (des)caminhos. Dialogando com os interesses e estratégias indigenistas, as representações delineadas por estes agentes revelam que a aproximação com os grupos nativos foi fruto de práticas ligadas à persuasão e brandura, as quais utilizavam-se de elementos tradicionais para mediar as situações de fronteira e contato intercultural. Partindo destes pressupostos, os instrumentos de mediação cultural oportunizaram não só o encontro e trocas entre universos distintos, como também, uma ressignificação ao papel criado às nações indígenas que, resultado do contexto social e político do oitocentos, era pensado de formas múltiplas, oscilando suas figurações no cenário nacional. Logo, dentro deste caleidoscópio, o objeto central é analisar as referências realizadas às nações indígenas e, mais do que isso, demonstrar os mecanismos de mediação cultural adotados para desenvolver e alicerçar alianças. Além disso, por meio destas descrições, podem-se revelar os sertões meridionais enquanto um espaço de possíveis diálogos e não só permeado de tensões, perigos e conflitos, como era comum se apresentar. / Thinking about the ways of interpretation and representation of indian nations, this research intends to investigate some travel itineraries published in Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute Magazine, known as Southern Journeys. This collection of experiences and perceptions bequeathed data about the native group's localization, daily dynamics and descriptions referring to the physiognomy and personality. Therefore, it's remarkable in these narratives, the fact that they reveal the strategies used by their interlocutors to create social bonds and, so to speak, succeed in their personal attempts linked to the indigenous society. Thereby, John Henry Elliot, Joaquim Francisco Lopes e José Joaquim Machado de Oliveira, stem from their relationship with the Baron of Antonina, enter the southern backwoods in order to map, describe and catalog data regarding terrestrial and fluvial routes that connected Curitiba to the Lower Paraguay and, in the process, observe the shapes, the colors, the peoples that color those landscapes in their paths. Dialoguing indigenous interests and strategies, the representations outlined by these agents reveal that the approach with the native groups was a result of practices related to persuasion and mildness, witch, used traditional elements to mediate the boundary situations and intercultural contact. Stem from these suppositions, the instruments of cultural mediation enable not only the gathering and exchanges between different universes, as well as a resignification of the role given to the indigenous nations that, as a result of the social and political context in the 1800's was thought in multiple ways, oscillating its figurations in the national scenario. Hence, in this kaleidoscope, the main objective is to analyze the references made about the indian nations and, more than that, demonstrate the mechanisms of cultural mediation adopted to develop and support alliances. Moreover, through these descriptions, it's possible to reveal the southern backwoods as a space of potential dialogues and not only permeating tensions, dangers and conflicts, as it was commonly reported.
