Speaking about grammar : English teachers' perspective on inductive and deductive teaching in upper secondary education.Ingemarsson, Rickard January 2017 (has links)
English is the most widespread language in our society and is realised and represented through language teachers in classrooms all over the world. The content of the subject is concretised through a document called syllabus. As all other languages, English consists of language rules which we call grammar, however, in the Swedish syllabus for English as a second language in upper secondary school, there are no directives that requests or specify grammatical competence for the students. This study aimed to establish an indication of how the notion of grammar is realised into the process of learning English as a foreign language by interview teachers. The study found that teachers in general are more fond of inductive methods when it comes to incorporate grammar during English classes, however, there were numerous suggestions among the teachers that a mixture between inductive and deductive should be present during EFL context. Students previous knowledge and conditions did affect teachers choice of approach in terms of how they apply and teach grammatical aspects.

The Effectiveness of Modified Inductive Versus Deductive Teaching : A case study on word order amongst a group of English as a foreign language learners / Modifierad induktiv eller deduktiv grammatikundervisning?
This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of modified inductive learning compared with deductive learning of English grammar among foreign language students. In order to achieve this purpose, two classes in Year Nine in a secondary school in Sweden were taught using the two different methods. An initial grammar test determined that the students struggled with word order, which as a result was chosen as the area to teach. A pre-test/post-test-design was used to examine the effect of the two methods, and compared with a control group. The results reveal that the inductive method should be favoured overall, but suggests that the deductive method may produce significantly better results among weaker students.

Vuxna med förvärvad traumatisk hjärnskada - omställningsprocesser och konsekvenser i vardagslivet : en studie av femton personers upplevelser och erfarenheter av att leva med förvärvad traumatisk hjärnskada / Adults with acquired traumatic brain injury – the changeover process and consequences in every day life : a study of fifteen persons' experience of living with acquired traumatic brain injuryStrandberg, Thomas January 2006 (has links)
The overall purpose of this study is to illuminate the changeover process experienced by individuals who as adults acquired a traumatic brain injury (TBI), to increase the knowledge and the understanding of this process, and describe the meaning of support in every day life. Persons who acquired a TBI as adults were administered a semi-structured interview covering six areas: consequences of TBI, family and social networks, working life and occupation, life-changes, support from society and everyday life. The interviews were qualitative and in-depth. A total of 15 informants participated, aged between 19-53 years when injured. Data were structured and underwent two phases of analysis. In the first phase, data underwent latent content analysis, underpinned by a hermeneutic approach, and in the subsequent phase, reanalysed within a framework derived from the theory of social recognition. Findings from the first phase of inductive analysis elicited key themes: (i) the meaning of care, a question of formal and/or informal support; (ii) the meaning of action, a question of activity versus inactivity; (iii) autonomy, a question of dependence versus independence; (iv) social interaction, a question of encounter and/or treatment; (v) the theme of changes, a question of process versus stagnation; and (vi) emotions, an oscillation between hope versus hopelessness. After the construction of the six themes each of them were, through a discursive analysis, connected with theories, earlier studies in the field of brain injuries and important interview quotations from the empirical material. During this phase, an interest developed to study the material from a new theoretical point of view. The second phase of analysis therefore involved the development of a framework derived from Honneth’s (1995) theory of social recognition. The central construct of ‘recognition’ was analysed from three different dimensions proposed by Honneth: the individual dimension, the legal dimension, the value dimension. Using this framework, the data were reanalysed. The scientific term for this process of re-contextualisation and re-description of data is abduction inference. Reported consequences were negative as well as positive. Significant others (e.g. next of kin) had an important function as a driving force for training and preparation for life-situation after injury. A majority of the informants were satisfied with support from society, such as hospital-care, rehabilitation and community support. Such support, initially, proceeded without problems but as time passed, the responsibility shifted to the person with TBI to take the initiative in arranging longer-term services. Long-term support which addresses physical, cognitive as well as psychosocial consequences of the TBI is important for outcomes. The majority of the informants had difficulties in returning to working life after the injury. The outcomes and recovery seemed to be a prolonged process, probably never ending, but which gradually over time becomes integrated as a part of life. The informants gave varying accounts of the extent to which they experienced social recognition.

This work has been carried out in the frame of the study of an industrial process for the manufacturing of carbon/carbon (C/C) composite aircraft brake discs. A porous preform made of carbon fibres is immersed in a liquid precursor and is heated by Radio-Frequency electromagnetic induction. The boiling precursor enters the porous preform and yields a carbon deposit in the hottest zones; this deposit will be the carbon matrix of the composite. A physico-chemical process model is proposed in the aim of ensuring its control and optimisation. The work consisted in developing a numerical solver coupling electromagnetic induction heating with heat, mass and species balances accounting for boiling, diffusion and chemical deposition reactions. The model includes the complete electrical circuit of the heating device: it therefore allows real-time, non-destructive monitoring of the infiltration progress through the evolution of the electrical properties. An original formulation has been designed to simultaneously describe the liquid, the gas and the boiling zone; it has been implemented in a commercial Finite Element software package and validated physically with respect to experimental data, with a good agreement. Finally, the simulation software has been used to propose directions for process improvements, through alterations of the inductive heating device geometry or of the heating power supply program.

Response of potato to paclobutrazol and manipulation of reproductive growth under tropical conditionsTsegaw, Tekalign 08 February 2006 (has links)
High temperature limit successful potato cultivation in the lowlands of tropical regions. One effect of high temperature may be an increase in gibberellin activity that is inhibitory to tuberization. Paclobutrazol blocks gibberellin biosynthesis and reduces its level in the plant. The effect of paclobutrazol on potato was examined under non-inductive conditions in a greenhouse and under field conditions in the hot tropical lowlands of eastern Ethiopia. Paclobutrazol was applied as a foliar spray or soil drench at rates equivalent to 0, 2, 3, and 4 kg a. i. per ha. Paclobutrazol increased chlorophyll a and b content, and photosynthetic efficiency, enhanced early tuber initiation, delayed physiological maturity, and increased tuber fresh mass, dry matter content, specific gravity and crude protein content. It reduced the number of tubers per plant and extended the tuber dormancy period. Paclobutrazol reduced shoot growth, and plant height, and increased the partitioning of assimilates to the tubers while reducing assimilate supply to the leaves, stems, roots and stolons. Stomatal conductance and the rate of transpiration were reduced. In addition, paclobutrazol treatment increased tuber N, Ca and Fe content while reducing P, K and Mg content. Growth analyses indicated that paclobutrazol decreased leaf area index, crop growth rate, and total biomass production. It increased specific leaf weight, tuber growth rate, net assimilation rate, and partitioning coefficient (harvest index). Microscopic observations showed that leaves of treated plants developed thicker epicuticular wax layers. The epidermal, palisade and spongy mesophyll cells were larger. It increased the thickness of the cortex and the size of vascular bundles and pith cells of the stem. It also increased the width of the cortex and favoured the formation of more secondary xylem vessels, resulting in thicker roots. Deposition of starch grains in the stem pith cells, and cortical cells of the stem and root, were stimulated in response to paclobutrazol treatment. In most instances the method of application did not affect the efficiency of paclobutrazol. The effect of cultivar and reproductive growth on growth, photosynthetic efficiency, water relations, dry matter production, tuber yield and quality of potato was also the subject of investigation. Non-flowering, flowering and fruiting plants of cultivars Al-624, Al-436, CIP-388453-3(A) and CIP-388453-3(B) were evaluated under field conditions of a sub-humid tropical highland of eastern Ethiopia. Cultivars exhibited differences with respect to leaf stomatal conductance, rate of transpiration, net photosynthesis, biomass production and allocation, tuber yield, tuber size distribution, specific gravity, dry matter content and nutrient composition. Fruiting plants had higher leaf stomatal conductance, and higher rates of transpiration and photosynthesis rates. The leaf area index, tuber growth rate, and partitioning coefficient (harvest index) of the fruiting plants were reduced, but crop growth rates and net assimilation rates were higher. Without affecting total dry matter production, fruit development reduced the amount partitioned to the leaves, stems, roots, and tubers. Fruit development reduced total and marketable tuber mass and tuber numbers. The effect of MCPA and paclobutrazol were studied under greenhouse and field conditions. Single foliar sprays were applied during the early and full bud development stages at rates of 0, 250, 500, and 750 g a.i. ha-1. Both MCPA and paclobutrazol greatly reduced the number of flowers and completely inhibited berry set. MCPA did not affect the number, yield, dry matter content and specific gravity of tubers. Without affecting the number of tubers, paclobutrazol increased tuber yield, dry matter content and specific gravity. / Thesis (DPhil (Horticultural Science))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Plant Production and Soil Science / unrestricted

Adicionalmente, tal abordagem se mostrou efetiva como mecanismo auxiliar para a escolha lexical na tradução automática estatística / Crosslingual communication has become a very imperative task in the current scenario with the increasing amount of information dissemination in several languages. In this context, machine translation systems, which can facilitate such communication by providing automatic translations, are of great importance. Although research in Machine Translation dates back to the 1950\'s, the area still has many problems. One of the main problems is that of lexical ambiguity, that is, the need for lexical choice when translating a source language word that has several translation options in the target language. This problem is even more complex when only sense variations are found in the translation options, a problem named \"sense ambiguity\". Several approaches have been proposed for word sense disambiguation, but they are in general monolingual (for English) and application-independent. Moreover, they have limitations regarding the types of knowledge sources that can be exploited. Particularly, there is no significant research aiming to word sense disambiguation involving Portuguese. The goal of this PhD work is the proposal and development of a novel approach for word sense disambiguation which is specifically designed for machine translation, follows a hybrid methodology (knowledge and corpus-based), and employs a relational formalism to represent various kinds of knowledge sources and disambiguation examples, by using Inductive Logic Programming. Several experiments have shown that the proposed approach overcomes alternative approaches in multilingual disambiguation and achieves higher or comparable results to the state of the art in monolingual disambiguation. Additionally, the approach has shown to effectively assist lexical choice in a statistical machine translation system

Evaluating Inductive Electric Road Systems Implementation : A multiple case study in SwedenNagarasan, Yuvanesh, Francis Xavier, Kevin Raja January 2020 (has links)
Sustainable transportation solutions are the goal for the future. With the technological shit happening in the transportation market towards electric vehicles, the electric road system (ERS) is a necessary technology required to reach the sustainability goals for the future. While many studies show the role of innovation in a socio-technical landscape, many neglect the diffusion process of the innovation which occurs to create a socio-technical change. The nature of this thesis is an exploratory case study with a qualitative approach. To address the study, a literature review for the diffusion of innovation, its characteristics, multi-level perspective, and technology readiness level (TRL) was presented in order to provide a better understanding and build a foundation for the research. A review of scientific articles regarding the electric road system was performed to provide insights and obtain information on the technology. The data from scientific articles were complemented by interviews from experts regarding electric road systems to obtain an understanding of technology if it was to be implemented in the future in Sweden. The empirics collected were analyzed using the literature framework and conclusions were drawn. Analyzing the data was required to find the factors hindering the technology and if there is a window of opportunity for the technology to exist in the Swedish market. Environmental sustainability has been the driving factor, but the rate of diffusion for the technology will depend on the complexity and the maturity of the technology to function as a whole working system. The study contributes to evaluating the implementation of an inductive electric road system in the Swedish context and if it could be a viable solution in the transportation market. The perspectives of the technology in the Swedish market and the motivation for the solution are discussed. An analytical contribution by evaluating if the technology could exist in the future and insights on the diffusion of the technology into the existing landscape.

Transmission dynamique d'énergie par induction : application au véhicule électrique / Dynamic inductive power transfer applied to electric vehiclesGori, Paul-Antoine 23 October 2019 (has links)
The limited electric-vehicle distance range is the main reason hindering the development of the electric transportation market. Dynamic inductive charging solves this problem, offering the possibility to charge while driving. The main issue consists in handling wide magnetic coupling variations when the vehicle is moving, while charging. A previous thesis in the research team on a 3-kW prototype led to the concept of voltage copying, which stabilises the coupler output voltage despite the varying coupling, making it easier to design the DC/DC converter linking the coupler to the battery. The hereby thesis deals with adapting this system to transfer from 20 kW to 30 kW. Raising the power is no small matter, due to the high electrical constraints on the coupled coils (1.4 kV on the 3-kW system), and the radiated field, limited by standardised thresholds. Firstly, a new control of the resonating circuit is proposed, allowing to change the system design to get lower electrical constraints and maintaining voltage copying properties. Then, an eight-shape coil was investigated in order to reduce the radiated field. Finally, a design method was conceived for the electrical part of the system, as well as the magnetic coupler, using jointly analytical models and finite element simulations to reduce simulation times. Results of the evaluated performance for such a high-power system are quite promising.

Inkrementální induktivní pokrytelnost pro alternující konečné automaty / Incremental Inductive Coverability for Alternating Finite AutomataVargovčík, Pavol January 2018 (has links)
In this work, we propose a specialization of the inductive incremental coverability algorithm that solves alternating finite automata emptiness problem. We experiment with various design decisions, analyze them and prove their correctness. Even though the problem itself is PSpace-complete, we are focusing on making the decision of emptiness computationally feasible for some practical classes of applications. We have obtained interesting comparative results against state-of-the-art algorithms, especially in comparison with antichain-based algorithms.
