Rhetoric of the academy : a pragmatist approach to reexamining individual experience in education

Thomas, William Michael 09 October 2013 (has links)
Higher education is at a crossroads. In the U.S. especially, the question of what role education should play in greater society continues to come up. Should education be about fundamentally developing the predispositions or skills of an individual so that he or she can be a more effective citizen later in life? Or should education merely function as a box to check off, a kind of rite of passage that, regardless of quality or content, is required of an individual on the way to becoming part of some “real world?” These issues are quickly moving to the forefront for students and scholars alike; no longer relegated behind closed doors at faculty meetings, these issues are coming to define the very institutions that question them. It is the goal of this thesis, then, to address these shifting goals for, and horizons of, education through a rhetorical lens. From this perspective, education functions as the text under consideration. Rhetoric as it is understood for the majority of this project can be seen in the social interactions that take place, typically between the individual student and his or her educational environment. The core theme that runs throughout this thesis is that learning is not something that solely takes place through formal education, nor is it about acquiring mere common sense; rather, it is a natural extension of human curiosity to wonder about and explore the world of which we are all a part. It is the responsibility of schools and universities alike to facilitate students in developing who they are as a part of this bigger picture. To this end, I introduce the term “inhabited learning.” Inhabited learning elaborates on why one’s learning experience in formal education is still so important: In an age of information we all need some way of making sense of the myriad facts and figures we encounter in our everyday lives, with the hope of being able to make better sense of ourselves in the process. / text

Casas e gentes: modos de viver e morar em uma cidade do interior de Alagoas / Houses and people: ways of living and dwelling in the interior of Alagoas

Nascimento, Thalita Lins do 14 December 2015 (has links)
One of the most striking examples of popular architecture in the North-East of Brazil is the ¨meia morada¨ house [a small Dutch-style house with a single door and two windows]. It belongs to an architectural style that has existed for centuries and still characterizes the urban configuration of towns that are situated in the interior of several states in the North-East. For the purposes of this study, the town of Quebrangulo has been chosen as a benchmark. It has 11 thousand inhabitants and is located in the wild landscape of the State of Alagoas. Within a passage taken from this research study, some houses were chosen that have been inhabited by traditional families who have remained there since the time they were first built. Thus they have accompanied the aging of those who dwell in them. Comforted and warmed by a wide array of decorative and religious objects, they are impregnated with the household experiences that underline the value of their faith and memories. By becoming acquainted with these houses through empirical observation and the narrative accounts of their residents, the researchers carried out an investigation into the ways they are inhabited, giving priority to the affective relationships that are established by the inhabitants within the spaces they occupy. This study is divided into three parts: the first examines the town of Quebrangulo; the second entails a close examination of the houses which form the passage that has been discussed in the current literature on the subject. The aim of this is to understand how these buildings appear in the setting of Quebrangulo; the third part is an attempt to get to know these houses from inside and to understand their dynamics. These different parts involved exploring the domestic surroundings in greater depth so that they could be seen in guided visits conducted by the residents themselves: the living-rooms, passages, bedrooms, kitchens and gardens. Prominence was given to reflecting on how religious feelings play a part in the dwellings examined in this study.

En studie om socialtjänstenheters koppling till interkulturellt socialt arbete / A study about social service units' coupling to intercultural social work.

Engkvist, Helena January 2022 (has links)

Lisso-Gougeon, Olivier 07 1900 (has links)
More than thirty years after the adoption of the Protection Policy for Lakeshores, Riverbanks, Littoral Zones and Floodplains Environmental Quality Act (repealed by the transitional regime on March 1, 2022), the impacts of human occupation on lakeshores and littoral zones remain a topical issue. Even if the Quebec literature emphasizes the inherent limits of municipal interventions and the opinion of experts in the natural sciences, law or urban planning, the point of view of the shoreline residents is poorly documented. In this thesis, we explore this topic through the theoretical framework of the commons. The thesis aims to deepen our knowledge from the point of view of shoreline residents and other stakeholders who participate in collective environmental interventions aimed at protecting the inhabited lakes of the administrative region of the Laurentians. We will therefore try to answer the question: how to rethink the protection of the lakeshores and littoral zones of inhabited lakes in resort areas? The results of the semi-directed interviews make it possible to explain 3 types of solutions: 1) that collective environmental intervention constitutes a credible solution for the protection of lakeshores and littoral zones; 2) that the impacts of human occupation on the lakeshores and littoral zones of inhabited lakes in resort areas can be thought of as a problem of collective resources; 3) that citizen and associative initiatives do not necessarily result in the emergence of commons. Our forward thinking allows us to say that local municipalities and lake associations are complementary in more ways than one and constitute a “public-common” partnership. These two organizations are likely to increase the number and extent of collective interventions aimed directly or indirectly at protecting the lakeshores and littoral zones of inhabited lakes in resort areas.

Roy, Héloïse 12 1900 (has links)
This master's thesis addresses citizen discourses, regarding ethnocultural otherness in suburban neighborhood of Laval. To do so, I focus on the specific context of the city of Laval to detangle the relations between space and ethnocultural otherness from the perspective of the inhabitants. This research, thus standing at the crossroads of ethnic studies, social geography and urban studies, enables an anchoring of the representation of ethnocultural diversity in both the social and physical spaces of the suburb. Within this framework, the discourses of the Lavallois, coming from two neighbourhoods each characterized by different processes of urban development and ethnic diversification are analyzed. For a majority of our sample, the recent changes in the urban landscape attest of a diversification in the inhabited space that generally evokes a negative response. The presence of ethnocultural otherness in the public and private spaces of Laval is also linked to a perceived degradation of the social bond in their community. At the study's conclusion, I argue that the perception of immigrants is intertwined in the recent urban changes occurring in the city of Laval. As such, immigrants are directly associated with the loss of the idealized suburban branding.

Le retour de l'art mural à l'époque contemporaine / The return of the Mural art in the contemporary period

Malbranche, Chloë 01 October 2011 (has links)
The return of Mural Art in the contemporary period” revolves round the following issue: In what way can one consider art to be a new form of metaphysics, since it allows man to project his soul on a support thus unveiling it to all in this form, which is close to a kind of “ecstasy”, i.e. an outside that is made to move through a “lived-in corporality”, for the mural painter claims the spirit of a period and merges with the wall so as to created an image – that of the invisible made visible. The “wall” concept will be examined as a foundation stone through the ages, as a support in modern art, a type of art that can create a link with the past but which especially stands out from contemporary art types, since we'll be studying mural works made by muralists as well as graffiti in general, which will be defined and studied in depth. Thus, rupestral art, which may be understood through the studies of Henri LHOTE, André LEROI-GOURHAN and Abbot BREUIL, can be explained most notably by looking at parietal paintings found in the Niaux, Kapova, Altamira, Lascaux and Chauvet caves, which represent the first form of human art and the beginning of a nascent spirituality. A link may be made to the symbolism of Egyptian art and its construction of image before reaching the decorative art of the Pompei and Herculanum frescoes – graffitis in those cities were studied by Eva CANTARELLA. It will be interesting, from a chronological point of view, to remember that the Middle Ages were the period when romanesque frescoes were born in order to further foster that age-old evolving spirituality. Such art was considered by Cennino CENNINI, who, along with father Ignazio POSSO explains the processes of “intonaco and the “a fresco” fresco. Finally, we'll have to study the modern period, since painting movements are made up of links and, more importantly, make a break with what preceded them, in order to last in time, as Valérie DUPONT, an arti historian, says.

L’« expérience publique de l’environnement » : une analyse des expérimentations au sein de deux espaces naturels protégés habités, en France et au Brésil / The “public experience of the environment" : an analysis of experimentations in two inhabited protected natural areas in France and Brazil / A “experiência pública do meio ambiente” : uma análise das experimentações em duas unidades de conservação habitadas, na França e no Brasil

Lago Marques, Manuelle 18 December 2018 (has links)
This thesis has a double purpose. First, it seeks to identify how the experiences of environmental protection can be developed within inhabited protected natural areas (ENPH). Then, it examines how the “Environment” can organize and integrate the social and political dynamics of the territories touched by approaches of conservation based on “ordinary” nature. To this end, we conducted a series of interviews, observation visits, archival research and a broad press review. By appealing to a cross history of local relationships with the natural and political environment and their mobilization in dealing with contemporary affairs involving protection policies – namely: the construction of roads – we have searched the benchmarks of how the contexts of meaning could be built within and through the Marais poitevin Regional Natural Park (France) and the Guaraqueçaba Environmental Protected Area (Brésil). Through our research, we show the importance of problematic situations – whether or not they result from nature conservation approaches – in the emergence of “public experiences of the Environment”, which is understood by us as any experience derived from the incorporation of the environmental issues into different fields of interaction. Whether these experiences are generated by public actions or arenas, whether they stem from the feeling of “troubles” or from a procedure of “inquiry”, they become public to the extent that (i) they make of “nature” an object of attention, action or debate and (ii) they involve the relationship of different “publics” to their “environments”. Incorporating international, national and local issues, “Environmental” experiences become public and private throughout the social experiments, and the processes of destabilization and reformulation of these protected areas.
