A System of Non-linear Partial Differential Equations Modeling Chemotaxis with Sensitivity Functions

Wir betrachten ein System nichtlinearer parabolischer partieller Differentialgleichungen zur Modellierung des biologischen Phänomens Chemotaxis, das unter anderem in Aggregationsprozessen in Lebenszyklen bestimmter Einzeller eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Unser Chemotaxismodell benutzt Sensitivitäts funktionen, die die vorkommenden biologischen Prozesse genauer spezifizieren. Trotz der durch die Sensitivitätsfunktionen eingebrachten, zusätzlichen Nichtlinearitäten in den Gleichungen erhalten wir zeitlich globale Existenz von Lösungen für verschiedene biologisch realistische Klassen von Sensitivitätsfunktionen und können unter unterschiedlichen Bedingungen an die Systemdaten Konvergenz der Lösungen zu trivialen und nicht-trivialen stationären Punkten beweisen. / We consider a system of non-linear parabolic partial differential equations modeling chemotaxis, a biological phenomenon which plays a crucial role in aggregation processes in the life cycle of certain unicellular organisms. Our chemotaxis model introduces sensitivity functions which help describe the biological processes more accurately. In spite of the additional non-linearities introduced by the sensitivity functions into the equations, we obtain global existence of solutions for different classes of biologically realistic sensitivity functions and can prove convergence of the solutions to trivial and non-trivial steady states.

Analysis and Implementation of Numerical Methods for Solving Ordinary Differential Equations

Numerical methods to solve initial value problems of differential equations progressed quite a bit in the last century. We give a brief summary of how useful numerical methods are for ordinary differential equations of first and higher order. In this thesis both computational and theoretical discussion of the application of numerical methods on differential equations takes place. The thesis consists of an investigation of various categories of numerical methods for the solution of ordinary differential equations including the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations from a number of practical fields such as equations arising in population dynamics and astrophysics. It includes discussion what are the advantages and disadvantages of implicit methods over explicit methods, the accuracy and stability of methods and how the order of various methods can be approximated numerically. Also, semidiscretization of some partial differential equations and stiff systems which may arise from these semidiscretizations are examined.

This thesis is devoted to studies of initial-boundary value problems (IBVPs) for systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) arising from fluid mechanics modeling, especially for the compressible Euler equations with frictional damping, the Boussinesq equations, the Cahn-Hilliard equations and the incompressible density-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. The emphasis of this thesis is to understand the influences to the qualitative behavior of solutions caused by boundary effects and various dissipative mechanisms including damping, viscosity and heat diffusion.

A tese apresenta um método para a solução dos problemas do valor inicial (PVIs) com margens de erro comparáveis às de métodos numéricos consagrados (MN), tanto para a função quanto para suas derivadas. O método é aplicável a equações diferenciais (EDs) lineares ou não, sendo o ferramental desenvolvido até a quarta ordem, que pode ser expandido para ordens superiores. A solução é uma expressão polinomial de alto grau com coeficientes expressos pela razão entre dois inteiros. O método se mostra eficaz mesmo em alguns casos em que os MN não conseguiram dar a partida. As resoluções são obtidas considerando que o espaço de soluções é um espaço de Hilbert, equipado com a base completa dos polinômios de Legendre. Em decorrência do método aqui desenvolvido, os majorantes de erros para a função e derivadas são determinados analiticamente por um cálculo matricial também deduzido nesta tese. Paralelamente a toda fundamentação analítica, foi desenvolvido o software SAM, que automatiza todas as tarefas na busca de soluções dos PVIs. A tese propõe e verifica a validade de um novo critério de erro no qual pesam tanto os erros locais quanto os erros globais, simultaneamente. Como subprodutos dos resultados já descritos, igualmente integrados ao SAM, obtiveram-se também: (1) Um critério objetivo para analisar a qualidade de um MN, sem necessidade do conhecimento de seu algoritmo; (2) Uma ferramenta para aproximações polinomiais de alta precisão para funções de quadrado integrável em determinado intervalo limitado, com um majorante de erro; (3) Um ferramental analítico para transposição genérica (linear ou não) dos PVIs até 4ª ordem, nas mudanças de domínio; (4) As matrizes de integração e diferenciação genéricas para todas as bases polinomiais do espaço de Hilbert. / This thesis shows a new method to get polynomial solutions to the initial value problems (IVP), with an error margin comparable to the consecrate numerical methods (NM), for both the function and its derivatives. The method works with differential equations (DEs) linear or not, beeing the developed tolls available until 4th order, whose can be expanded to higher orders. The solution is a polynomial high degree expression with coefficients expressed by the ratio between two integers. The method behaves efficiently even in some cases that NM cannot get started. The resolutions are gotten considering that, the solution space is a Hilbert space, equipped with a complete set basis of Legendre Polynomials. Due the method here developed, the errors majoratives for the function and its derivatives are found analytically by a matrix calculus, also derived in this thesis. Beside all analytical foundation, a software (SAM) was developed to automate the whole process, joining all the tasks involved in the search for solutions to the IVP. This thesis proposes, verifies and validates a new error criterion, which takes in account simultaneously the local and global errors. As sub-products of the results described before, also integrated to the SAM, the following achievements should be highlighted: (1) An objective criterion to analyze the quality of any NM, despite of the knowledge of its algorithm; (2) A tool for a polynomial approximation, of high precision, for functions whose square is integrable in a given limited domain, with an errors majorative; (3) A tool-kit for a generically transpose (linear or not) of the IVPs domain and form, taking into account its derivatives, until the 4th order; (4) The generic matrices for integration and differentiation for all the polynomial basis of the Hilbert space.

Goodwill är ett kontroversiellt begrepp och har varit mycket omdiskuterat inom redovisningslitteraturen. På senare år har andelen redovisad goodwill ökat och blivit en betydande post i företagets balansräkningar. Enligt IFRS 3 ska anskaffad goodwill beräknas som skillnaden mellan köpeskillingen och identifierbara tillgångar och skulder. Eftersom goodwill ofta baseras på ett restvärde och att både IFRS 3 och IAS 36 uppmanar användarna att göra subjektiva bedömningar skapas utrymme för manipulation i redovisningen. Anledningen till det är att redovisningsdata ofta används som underlag för att mäta chefers prestation. Goodwill skapar därför utrymme för cheferna att efter egen bedömning rapportera om postens värde både initialt och i samband med nedskrivningsprövningar. Bedömningarna motiveras ofta med att goodwill förväntas bidra med framtida kassaflöden. Då det är svårt att kunna beräkna och kontrollera framtida kassaflöden på ett tillförlitligt sätt är det intressant att undersöka hur företag motiverar sina värden på goodwill.Syftet med denna studie är därför att skapa en förståelse för vilka effekter IFRS har på redovisningen av goodwill och att undersöka chefers motiv till goodwillredovisning. De frågeställningar som studien baseras på är på vilken grund initialvärdet av goodwill fastställs samt på vilket omdöme nedskrivningen av goodwill baseras. Studien omfattar 12 olika bolag noterade på OMX Stockholm Large Cap. En innehållsanalys har gjorts baserad på årsredovisningar från respektive företag mellan åren 2010 och 2012. För att besvara frågeställningarna har teori och empiri varvats och omtolkats med hjälp av varandra. De teorier som har använts är principal- och agentteorin samt enhetsteorin. Teorin, grundläggande redovisningsprinciper och standards har utgjort en grund för förståelse av empirin. På så vis har mönster observerats som har bidragit till att förstå och tolka på vilka grunder goodwillposten värderas.Studiens resultat bidrar till att visa att det i dagsläget inte finns något sätt att säkerställa att goodwill genererar de positiva synergieffekter som ledningen i företagen initialt påstår att posten kommer att göra. Anledningen till det är att posten grundas på bedömningar som är svåra och kanske omöjliga att verifiera. Därför kan upplysningarna kring goodwill anses vara spekulativa. Studien pekar även på att det kan finnas underliggande motiv som påverkar chefernas värdering av goodwill både initialt och i samband med nedskrivningsprövningar. / Program: Civilekonomprogrammet

Quantum Dynamics in Biological Systems

In the first part of this dissertation, recent efforts to understand quantum mechanical effects in biological systems are discussed. Especially, long-lived quantum coherences observed during the electronic energy transfer process in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex at physiological condition are studied extensively using theories of open quantum systems. In addition to the usual master equation based approaches, the effect of the protein structure is investigated in atomistic detail through the combined application of quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics simulations. To evaluate the thermalized reduced density matrix, a path-integral Monte Carlo method with a novel importance sampling approach is developed for excitons coupled to an arbitrary phonon bath at a finite temperature. In the second part of the thesis, simulations of molecular systems and applications to vibrational spectra are discussed. First, the quantum dynamics of a molecule is simulated by combining semiclassical initial value representation and density funcitonal theory with analytic derivatives. A computationally-tractable approximation to the sum-of-states formalism of Raman spectra is subsequently discussed.
