Knowing at work : A study of professional knowledge in integration work directed to newly arrived immigrants

Vesterlind, Marie January 2016 (has links)
Currently, new knowledge domains and professions emerge as a consequence of societal changes that transform that conditions for work and work integrated learning. Integration work directed to newly arrived immigrants is one example of such a new professional knowledge domain. In civic orientation, which is the empirical case in this study, quality, standardization and dialogue are explicit strategies that impact the planning, organization and decision-making in everyday work. The interest in this thesis concerns the professional knowledge that is developed in activities aiming to provide heterogeneous groups of immigrants an orientation in the Swedish society. By making activity systems the prime unit ofanalysis and scrutinizing the ways in which integration workers make use of a stipulated course material and interactions in a specific context, the aim is to contribute to the understanding of the pedagogical and communicative knowledge that is developed in practice. The analytical approach takes its point of departure in a socio-cultural perspective on workplace studies. Three separate studies have been carried out in which the empirical data consist of observations, interviews, video recordings, field notes and documents from various integration offices. The results show that different perspectives on knowledge and culture becomes relevant in local discourses on quality in integration work. What distinguishes the integration workers professional knowledge concern seeing and understanding the heterogeneity of immigrants' cultural backgrounds and bridging boundaries.Culture function as an organizing element in work that makes it possible to make distinctions and organize a contextually relevant content that can be elaborated together with the members in the groups. Such work imply transformation of procedures and it is shown that the integration workers develop their knowledge from specific situations to understand the significance of textually mediate dimeanings in other situations. Knowledge is developed as the integration workers move between different situations and activities. It is concluded that the meaning-making involved in bridging between different cultural contexts relies on extensive knowledge in and about the recognition of the other and of interactions based on equal grounds. Negotiating agreements with the members of the groups about how common possibilities and responsibilities can be understood is central for respecting heterogeneity in the process and is at the core of the integration workers professional knowledge. Considering the future development of integration work, cumulative structures are needed that recognize and support the development of the integration workers professional knowledge within as well as between organizations and other related fields of practice and in relation to higher education.

Public library staff’s work with newly arrived during the COVID-19 pandemic

Born, Ylva January 2022 (has links)
This master’s thesis aims to contribute to and extend the knowledge regarding the public library staff’s work with newly arrived during the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Västerås, Sweden. This thesis is motivated by the increase of individuals who migrate to the city of Västerås and the high number of COVID cases that the city had in early 2022. Seven public library staff members from the city of Västerås were interviewed through semi-structured interviews. The empirical data was analyzed with the help of a theoretical framework based on a conceptualization of integration combined with a model that serves to make visible the different functions of a public library. The study shows that the library staff experienced various challenges and found creative solutions while working with the newly arrived during the pandemic while still adhering to the restrictions. The most critical challenges experienced were the decreased communication between the library staff and the newly arrived visitors and the digital participation of the visitors. Solutions regarding the challenges were created to suit the visitors’ needs, such as new services, digital forums, and the possibility of booking a librarian for IT tasks. In conclusion, all study participants agreed that the pandemic had made their work with the newly arrived visitors more challenging. Still, they all expressed their work with the visitors as inspiring, even amid a pandemic.

Heimer Åkerlund, Maria, Wahlberg, Jenny January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine and compare the preparatory work of two government efforts to diminish segregation in Sweden: Storstadssatsningen and Nya långsiktiga reformprogrammet för minskad segregation. We have, by a qualitative textual analysis, examined how these preparatory works represent the citizen, their intention, efforts and goals and how the influence and participation by the citizen is intended to meet the needs of recipients of these efforts. The vulnerable citizen is represented in the same way in both preparatory works. Similarities that can be seen are citizens described with a lack of competencies and defined by the problems of their neighbourhood. There are differences concerning how citizens by ethnicity are described. The goals and achievements, which have been compared in both preparatory works, are focused on work and education as instruments to breach segregation. Participation and the influence by the citizen is given a great deal of space in Storstadssatningen, but hardly no space in Nya långsiktiga reformprogrammet för minskad segregation.        We can see a much harder climate in the community, with increased segregation, where citizens without power and participation develops alienation and where the gap between groups increase. With a perspective of integration and concepts of empowerment and mobilization, we examine possibilities for an alteration. We examine the representation of this methods in both preparatory works.       In this study, we can see defects in the government welfare systems, which urges a responsibility, in the social work, to define and work with new methods.

After obtaining a job, one can act as a Swede" : Unaccompanied minors’ experiences of the Swedish labour market

Edenklint, Louise January 2021 (has links)
Background: The refugee issue became highly topical during the 2000s. This is due to the fact that an increasing number of unaccompanied minors arrived to Europe, but also the more and more widespread view that they erode the national culture, cohesion and social welfare. In 2020, a public inquiry was initiated in which the main task was to investigate how a “sustainable” migration policy can be created. During this time, it was proposed in the saidinquiry, among other things, to grant only temporary residence permits. Refugees are increasingly perceived as a threat to the national collective identity. The societal changes and the paradigm shift affect newly arrived children and young people to a very high degree. Fort he unaccompanied group of children, escape in itself means a particularly insecure situation without one's own family and the safety net that this constitutes. For this group, therefore, the acquisition of a job, which is an important part of a successful integration, is of particular importance, given that in many cases it determines the possibilities of staying in Sweden. Aim: The purpose of the study is to investigate how unaccompanied minors experience the acquisition of a job in Sweden, and in this process to investigate which support the group considers most important. The following issues are addressed in the study: What challenges do the unaccompanied minors experience when it comes to getting a job in Sweden? What facilitating factors do the unaccompanied minors experience when it comes to getting a job in Sweden? Which adult support is considered most significant by the unaccompanied minors, when it comes to acquiring a job?  Method: Qualitative method was used in the study and data were produced by conducting twelve semi-structured interviews with unaccompanied individuals who were recruited via a convenience sample (private contacts), due to the prevailing pandemic situation. The interviews were conducted in collaboration with another fellow student. The theoretical framework consisted of a phenomenological perspective. The interviews were transcribed and a thematic analysis was implemented, using an integrational perspective.  Results and conclusions: The experiences of unaccompanied young people were compiled after implementing the thematic analysis, and presented in five different themes. Language, lack of driving licenses and a perceived racism created obstacles for entry to the labor market, while the unaccompanied young people emphasized the importance of achieving independence and not giving up as strengths. Contact networks and having social support were perceived by the young people as crucial for finding a job. Legal obstacles and the anxiety they create was something that in this context stood out in a negative way in theyoung people’s stories.  The area of the study is relatively unexplored, and the emphasis on young people's own experiences contributes a new dimension to child and youth research in this area. When the young people's own perspective is illustrated in relation to the possibility of entering the Swedish labor market, this also becomes a contribution to the overall picture of the practical integration work.

Alarm på bryggan : trygghet och irritation / Bridge alarms : safety and irritation

Zaremba, Anja, Petersson, Jem January 2011 (has links)
Work on a navigational bridge consists to a great extent of control tasks. Control and alarm systems are available to facilitate this work. The interaction between humans and systems depends partly on the  user's knowledge and experience and partly on bridge design and technologies’ usability. The topic of this thesis is the handling of alarms and alarm systems on  navigational  bridges.  The aim was to  study  whether there are strategies for this and if so, to illustrate how these strategies work. For this reason seven officers’  experiences were examined with  qualitative methods, semi-structured interviews and content analysis. The investigation led among other things to the following conclusions:   Alarm handling is often done according to unwritten rules and agreements. It is seen as part of the profession and is done on the side. Officers follow a scheme when an alarm calls for their attention. Officers construct their own tools and methods to deal with ergonomic problems and malfunctions.
