Indoor Location Surveillance : Utilizing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Signals

Hörnlund, Emil, Schenström, Rasmus January 2019 (has links)
Personal information nowadays have become valuable for many stakeholders. We want to find out how much information someone can gather from our daily devices such as a smartphone, using some budget devices together with some programming knowledge. Can we gather enough information to be able to determine a location to a target device? The main objectives of our bachelor thesis is to determine the accuracy of positioning for nearby personal devices using trilateration of short-distance communications (Wi-Fi vs Bluetooth). But also, how much and what information our devices leak without us knowing with respect to personal integrity. We collected Wi-Fi and Bluetooth data in total from four target devices. Two different experiments were executed, calibration experiment and visualization experiment. The data were collected by capturing the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Received Signal Strength Indication(RSSI) transmitted wirelessly from target devices. We then apply a method called trilateration to be able to pinpoint a target to a location. In theory, Bluetooth signals are twice as accurate as Wi-Fi signals. In practise, we were able to locate a target device with an accuracy of 5 - 10 meters. Bluetooth signals are stable but have long response time while Wi-Fi signals have short response time but high fluctuation in the RSSI values. The idea itself, being able to determine a handheld device position is not impossible, as can be seen from our results. It may though require more powerful hardware to secure an acceptable accuracy. On the other hand, achieving this kind of results from such a cheap hardware as Raspberry Pi:s are truly amazing.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Joao Batista Lamari Palma e Silva.pdf: 6384826 bytes, checksum: 7f07e131301eff9f4bf2ddb19d173b2b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-10-09 / The structures of reinforced concrete, although extremely diffused, require special attention from its conception, utilization its operation. This kind of attention could contribute for developing more useful time of usage, as since, the pathologies could be most varieties in complexes conditions, and so far is to analyze the integrity of the complexity of the structural condition. Structural Heart Monitoring (SHM) seeks the process of monitoring the behavior of the structure in order to assess the structure's conditions verifying the occurrence of damages and eventually in case of need for interventions, aiming at structural rehabilitation. The automated SHM uses data acquisition which acts as an interface between the sensors installed in the structures and the computational systems could be very complex and expensive. This work had the initiative to use the Arduino platform, which one is an electronic prototyping system, which uses an Atmel microcontroller, free hardware and software, with Analog/Digital inputs and outputs, low cost and relative ease of operation. The objective of this research was the development of a structure monitoring system, based on data collection from strain, displacement and force sensors, on reinforced concrete structures, for the acquisition and remote transmission of data, for processing and analysis of information. A data acquisition system was built with the Arduino platform, and this system has been used besides the platform in question, signal amplifiers and Wheatstone Bridge type circuits. A mobile application as a type of software has been developed, compatible with the Android operating system, through a smartphone or tablet, it was possible to control the Arduino through wireless communication via Bluetooth. This application sends and receives data, which is processed and analyzed analytically and graphically, resulting from the information of the sensors installed in the structures, which enables the transmission of the data in real time, via the internet. This system was tested in bending tests of metallic cantilever and reinforced concrete beams, instrumented with electric resistance strain gauges installed in the reinforcement and concrete, as displacement transducers and load cells. In addition to this structure, the system was also tested on a reinforced concrete column supporting a crane, with the installation of strain gauges in the reinforcement. In these tests, the data acquisition was made by two different systems, the first one being a commercial data acquisition purchaser and the second the system object of this research, to compare the data of the readings, obtained between both equipment and analytical values, establishing satisfactory results.

Testing signal integrity faults in VLSI circuits. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2011 (has links)
As the ever-advancing fabrication technologies in semiconductor industry enable the VLSI circuits with increasing integration and decreasing cost, the circuits suffer from much severer Signal Integrity (SI) faults, where SI is the capability of signals generating correct responses in their downstream circuits. SI faults are complex problems to tackle since SI may be damaged by numerous kinds of causes and SI faults may impact multiple aspects of circuits' performance. Such SI problems can seriously reduce product yield, result in function error or even permanently damage the chip. Therefore, effective testing methodologies are essential to alleviate SI problems by verifying the SI satisfaction of VLSI circuits efficiently. / Hereby the thesis has examined the SI problems systematically and proposed effective test methods corresponding to the specific feature of SI faults. Firstly, considering that SI on inter-core interconnects of SOCs is under severe danger, new test wrapper design has been proposed to achieve accurate SI test on interconnects. Secondly, test architecture has been optimized for cost reduction considering SI test and logic test simultaneously. Thirdly, the impact of power distribution network (PDN) defects on SI has been analyzed and efficient computation method has been proposed to identify those potentially harmful PDN defects. Effective test pattern manipulation method has also been proposed to improve test coverage of PDN defects. Fourthly, considering the increasing impact of process variation and aging effect on SI, an innovative online test architecture has been proposed, which can accurately measure the delay of critical paths when the circuit is working in function mode, where such valuable information is of great help for a variety of applications. / Zhang, Yubin. / Adviser: Qiang Xu. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-06, Section: B, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2011. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 121-133). / Electronic reproduction. As [des]venturas da integridade no Patrimônio Mundial / The [mis]adventures of integrity in the world heritage

Loretto, Rosane Piccolo 26 April 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the notion of integrity - one of the main criteria for selecting cultural and natural areas in the World Heritage system -, seeking to demonstrate the conflicting relationship between its technical and political-administrative aspects in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [Unesco]. For this, integrity is analyzed from three dimensions - conceptual, theoretical and institutional -, favoring documental sources such as regular and etymological dictionaries; writings on restoration theory; reports from the World Heritage Committee and Bureau, expert meetings, assessments of cultural and natural nominations; circular letters; operational guidelines; conventions; recommendations; and heritage charters, in dialogue with the historiography on the subject. Therefore, the study shows that many decisions taken in the name of integrity were driven by eminently political and administrative issues, sometimes covered by the veil of \"neutrality\" of technical evaluations.

Ex Vivo Protein Post Translational Modifications in Poorly Stored Blood Plasma and Serum and their use as Markers of Biospecimen Integrity

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Exposure of blood plasma/serum (P/S) to thawed conditions, greater than -30°C, can produce biomolecular changes that misleadingly impact measurements of clinical markers within archived samples. Reported here is a low sample-volume, dilute-and-shoot, intact protein mass spectrometric assay of albumin proteoforms called “ΔS-Cys-Albumin” that quantifies cumulative exposure of archived P/S samples to thawed conditions. The assay uses the fact that S-cysteinylation (oxidation) of albumin in P/S increases to a maximum value when exposed to temperatures greater than -30°C. The multi-reaction rate law that governs this albumin S-cysteinylation formation in P/S was determined and was shown to predict the rate of formation of S-cysteinylated albumin in P/S samples—a step that enables back-calculation of the time at which unknown P/S specimens have been exposed to room temperature. To emphasize the capability of this assay, a blind challenge demonstrated the ability of ΔS-Cys-Albumin to detect exposure of individual and grouped P/S samples to unfavorable storage conditions. The assay was also capable of detecting an anomaly in a case study of nominally pristine serum samples collected under NIH-sponsorship, demonstrating that empirical evidence is required to guarantee accurate knowledge of archived P/S biospecimen storage history. The ex vivo glycation of human serum albumin was also investigated showing that P/S samples stored above their freezing point leads to significant increases in glycated albumin. These increases were found to occur within hours at room temperature, and within days at -20 °C. These increases continued over a period of 1-2 weeks at room temperature and over 200 days at -20 °C, ultimately resulting in a doubling of glycated albumin in both healthy and diabetic patients. It was also shown that samples stored at lower surface area-to-volume ratios or incubated under a nitrogen atmosphere experienced less rapid glucose adduction of albumin—suggesting a role for oxidative glycation in the ex vivo glycation of albumin. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Biochemistry 2018

A comparison of two types of remote performance feedback on treatment integrity

Zhu, Jing 01 May 2019 (has links)
Treatment integrity has a direct impact on early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) outcomes for children with autism. Research suggests that providing feedback can improve treatment integrity in EIBI. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two remote feedback methods, videoconference feedback and email feedback, on treatment integrity. Participants included six teachers who were providing EIBI to children with autism in China. Using a single-case alternating treatment design, each feedback method was associated with a specific teaching procedure, either discrete trial training or incidental teaching. The teachers implemented the two teaching procedures daily but only received feedback during intervention. Results showed that videoconference feedback produced faster mastery of the teaching procedures and better treatment integrity sustainability after the intervention was removed than email feedback. Treatment integrity deterioration was observed during maintenance and follow up. Results of generalization were mixed. In social validity evaluations, teachers expressed preference of videoconference feedback over email feedback in terms of acceptance and effectiveness of the intervention, but they considered email feedback a more efficient use of their time.

The Effects of Militant Press on Nigeria's Democratic Evolution

Malaolu, Oluwaniran 15 November 2004 (has links)
This is an in-depth study of the Nigerian press, the ubiquitous behemoth which called itself the "defender" of Nigeria's national independence and the last "hope" of the common man. It's a bold attempt to critically examine its antecedents, its evolution or development especially the historical, political, technological and socio-economic events that had impacted its growth, its world views and ideologies. It's a thorough assessment of the press' influence on Nigeria's socio-economic and political development, as well as the suitability of its tactics and posturing toward attaining its set goals of economic and political emancipation of Nigerians. Most importantly, this study is aimed at determining whether the Nigerian Press' militantly combative and adversarial posturing, cultivated since its emergence on Nigeria's political scene during the colonial era, is still relevant in view of the nation's current democratic experiment. And also whether there are better alternative strategies toward achieving good governance in Nigeria, which is its utmost desire.

Constructing Artistic Integrity: An Exploratory Study

Barbour, Kim Jaime January 2006 (has links)
This thesis explores the concept of artistic integrity. A historical foundation for artistic integrity is laid to provide a context within which eight artists' constructions of the concept can be placed. To date, little research has been conducted to discover how artists feel about artistic integrity, despite the fact that the concept is used frequently both in the popular media, and in arts and creative industries policy and research. Secondary research into European Romanticism and the growth of the creative industries traces the complex development of artistic integrity through to contemporary New Zealand. Grounded by an internal-idealist ontology, a subjectivist epistemology, and an interpretive paradigmatic framework, qualitative, semi-structured interviews with eight artists were conducted to investigate how artistic integrity is perceived by those working within the New Zealand arts environment. The multifaceted nature of the history of artistic integrity is mirrored in the complexity of the responses from the artists involved in this research. Key themes to emerge from the analysis of the interview data were the personally constructed and contextual character of artistic integrity, its importance to the artists involved, and its social contestation. However, the opinions offered on these themes were often very different, and occasionally even contradictory. The artists' responses illuminate how differently artistic integrity could be interpreted throughout the creative community, and question the validity of current uses and definitions of the concept. Most importantly, this research provides an opportunity for artists to offer their understandings of artistic integrity, as surely it is artists who should be determining the validity and meaning of their integrity.
