Development towards intelligent design for assembly

Hsu, Hung-Yao January 2001 (has links)
This thesis addresses research towards the development of an intelligent design for assembly evaluation system (IDFAES) based on the design for assembly (DFA) principels. The research project aimed to enhance the capability of existing DFA methodologies in order to support activities such as redesign, design modification and assembly planning during the product development cycle.

Reconsidering William Paley

Onkal, Guncel 01 July 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is to analyze the arguments from design to intelligent design and to present the main philosophical aspects of design arguments. Without examining the conceptual background of design arguments, it is not possible to understand their roles in philosophy, theology and science. To this aim, first the philosophical usage of the argument is explained into three categories: argument from design, argument to design and intelligent design. Next, in order to provide a deeper analysis, William Paley&rsquo / s Natural Theology in its closer relation of the natural sciences and theological discourse are examined. Lastly, through the philosophy and metaphysics of design, the framework of intelligent design is discussed. Consequently, the process of design arguments can be analyzed through the concept of intelligence rather than design in the history of philosophy since it is closely related to the religious and scientific way of understanding of nature. William Paley&rsquo / s argument to design is, thus, a fragile point between the classical and contemporary versions of design arguments.

The faith dynamic in creationism and evolutionary theory

Jackson, Edgar Basil January 2012 (has links)
This study attempts to examine evolutionary theory and creationism objectively without engaging in an apology for or a criticism of either. It compares the presuppositions and assumptions of both systems, and examines the role of faith in religion and in the scientific theory of evolution. After discussing the nature of the scientific method and the development of the theory of evolution, the study explores the dichotomy of faith and reason, the ways in which these operate in theories of intelligent design and theistic evolution, and the question of whether scientific evolutionary theory can be considered to be a secular religion. The thesis argues that acceptance of the scientific theory of evolution is as dependent upon a faith commitment as is adherence to religion, though the type and quality of the two respective faith systems are very different and, therefore, worthy of comparison and contrast. The study concludes that, while science and evolutionary theory share many of the same features and characteristics of faith and presumption, it is presently not appropriate to claim that evolutionary theory is a secular religion, and that when this opinion is asserted it is worthwhile to analyze the motivation, conscious and unconscious, involved. / Thesis (PhD (Dogmatics))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus in association with Greenwich School of Theology, U.K., 2013.

This research aims to study the elaborated discourses of certain religious circles of the contemporary American society to support the belief in the creationism and the refutation of the theory of evolution. These discourses emerge in reaction to the evolutionist thesis that expand since the publication of the Charles Darwin’s book The Origin of the Species, in 1859, in England, and that gradually earn space in the scientific community. Some American religious denominations see these teachings as a threat to their belief in one personal God, creator and pillar of everything. In this scenario, two discourses emerge seeking to refute the evolutionist arguments. The first one clings to the tenets of the so-called “biblical inerrancy” and reaffirms the belief in the origin of the universe according to what is strictly expressed in the book of Genesis. In the present research this discourse is identified as “Theory of Special Creation” (TSC). The basic thesis of second discourses is that the complexity of the universe, of the life and of the very nature is such that they could not develop themselves, therefore, showing evidences of an intelligent design. In the present research this discourse is identified as “Intelligent Design Theory” (IDT).

"Evolution och Bibel" eller "evolution eller Bibel"? : En argumentationsanalytisk studie av Richard Dawkins och Joan Roughgarden

Ahlberg, Erik January 2021 (has links)
The compatibility between the Christian faith and various scientific advances has been up for discussion time and again to the degree that the debate is hard to miss. According to most, the most daunting subject of the discussion might be the compatibility with Darwin’s theory of evolution. In an attempt to get a perspective on this issue, this paper discusses compatibility by analysing the argumentation on the subject by two evolutionary biologists: Richard Dawkins and Joan Roughgarden. The arguments of the two authors are then tested regarding validity and applicability, leading to the conclusion that although both make valid claims regarding the subject of evolution, Dawkins’ reasoning of incompatibility can only be applied to a strictly limited group of Christians, whereas Roughgarden’s arguments for compatibility between the theory of evolution the Bible appears to be both tenable and applicable to Christianity at large. The conclusion is thus drawn that a certain compatibility appears to exist.

The use of information concepts in the dialogue between science and theology

Marais, Mario Alphonso 11 1900 (has links)
We are living in the information age and this has had an effect on both science and theology. Our understanding of the fundamental role of information has increased significantly. One can even say that information has become an overarching metaphor in the world of science. This dissertation gives an overview of the impact of the information-based scientific world-view on the dialogue between science and theology. The study investigates the metaphorical use of information concepts to secure a better understanding of God's action in the world and the role that information plays in the processes of life. The focus is on the role of biological information, and its relation to divine action is investigated. The scientific importance of information and the possible impact of information concepts on the science and theology dialogue of the future are discussed. / Systematic Theology & Theological Ethics / M.
