Performance analysis and improvement of InfiniBand networks. Modelling and effective Quality-of-Service mechanisms for interconnection networks in cluster computing systems.

Yan, Shihang January 2012 (has links)
The InfiniBand Architecture (IBA) network has been proposed as a new industrial standard with high-bandwidth and low-latency suitable for constructing high-performance interconnected cluster computing systems. This architecture replaces the traditional bus-based interconnection with a switch-based network for the server Input-Output (I/O) and inter-processor communications. The efficient Quality-of-Service (QoS) mechanism is fundamental to ensure the import at QoS metrics, such as maximum throughput and minimum latency, leaving aside other aspects like guarantee to reduce the delay, blocking probability, and mean queue length, etc. Performance modelling and analysis has been and continues to be of great theoretical and practical importance in the design and development of communication networks. This thesis aims to investigate efficient and cost-effective QoS mechanisms for performance analysis and improvement of InfiniBand networks in cluster-based computing systems. Firstly, a rate-based source-response link-by-link admission and congestion control function with improved Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) packet marking scheme is developed. This function adopts the rate control to reduce congestion of multiple-class traffic. Secondly, a credit-based flow control scheme is presented to reduce the mean queue length, throughput and response time of the system. In order to evaluate the performance of this scheme, a new queueing network model is developed. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiments show that these two schemes are quite effective and suitable for InfiniBand networks. Finally, to obtain a thorough and deep understanding of the performance attributes of InfiniBand Architecture network, two efficient threshold function flow control mechanisms are proposed to enhance the QoS of InfiniBand networks; one is Entry Threshold that sets the threshold for each entry in the arbitration table, and other is Arrival Job Threshold that sets the threshold based on the number of jobs in each Virtual Lane. Furthermore, the principle of Maximum Entropy is adopted to analyse these two new mechanisms with the Generalized Exponential (GE)-Type distribution for modelling the inter-arrival times and service times of the input traffic. Extensive simulation experiments are conducted to validate the accuracy of the analytical models.

Processing and Characterization of Device Solder Interconnection and Module Attachment for Power Electronics Modules

Haque, Ashim Shatil 08 January 2000 (has links)
This research is focused on the processing of an innovative three-dimensional packaging architecture for power electronics building blocks with soldered device interconnections and subsequent characterization of the module's critical interfaces. A low-cost approach termed metal posts interconnected parallel plate structure (MPIPPS) was developed for packaging high-performance modules of power electronics building blocks (PEBB). The new concept implemented direct bonding of copper posts, not wire bonding of fine aluminum wires, to interconnect power devices as well as joining the different circuit planes together. We have demonstrated the feasibility of this packaging approach by constructing PEBB modules (consisting of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs), diodes, and a few gate driver elements and passive components). In the 1st phase of module fabrication with IGBTs with Si₃N₄ passivation, we had successfully fabricated packaged devices and modules using the MPIPPS technique. These modules were tested electrically and thermally, and they operated at pulse-switch and high power stages up to 6kW. However, in the 2nd phase of module fabrication with polyimide passivated devices, we experienced significant yield problems due to metallization difficulties of these devices. The under-bump metallurgy scheme for the development of a solderable interface involved sputtering of Ti-Ni-Cu and Cr-Cu, and an electroless deposition of Zn-Ni-Au metallization. The metallization process produced excellent yield in the case of Si₃N₄ passivated devices. However, under the same metallization schemes, devices with a polyimide passivation exhibited inconsistent electrical contact resistance. We found that organic contaminants such as hydrocarbons remain in the form of thin monolayers on the surface, even in the case of as-received devices from the manufacturer. Moreover, in the case of polyimide passivated devices, plasma cleaning introduced a few carbon constituents on the surface, which was not observed in the case of Si3N4 passivated devices. X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) Spectra showed evidence of possible carbon contaminants, such as carbide (~282.9eV) and graphite (~284.3eV) on the surface at binding energies below the binding energy of the hydrocarbon peak (C 1s at 285eV). Whereas above the hydrocarbon peak energy level, carbon-nitrogen compounds, single bond carbon compounds (~285.9eV) and double bond carbon compounds (~288.5eV) were evident. The majority of the carbon composition on the pad surface was associated with hydrocarbons, which were hydrophobic in nature, thus making the device contact pad less wettable. XPS data showed that, after the plasma cleaning process, absorbed monolayers on the Si₃N₄ passivated and polyimide passivated surfaces consisted of different chemical compositions and accordingly, the attraction forces of these absorbed layers are also different, which affects the bonding properties of the subsequent metallization, resulting in different contact resistances. On the other hand, with an electroless Zn-Ni-Au deposition, it was found that the polyimide passivation on the devices degraded due to due alkaline exposure in the plating baths, thus lowering the device breakdown voltage significantly. Furthermore, interfacial thermal resistances of solder preform, solder paste and silver epoxy (between the power module and the heat spreader) were characterized for process optimization. Void content at the resulting interface was found to be dependent on the flux content and flux activity. Solder preform with no-clean flux, reflowed in nitrogen results in the least resistant and minimized void-content interface. It is most likely that the flux added to the preform had a higher fluxing action than the flux contained in the solder paste. On the other hand, the outgassing of the entrapped flux profoundly affects the void formation and a lower void content indicates a lesser amount of trapped flux. In the case of a solder paste, the flux is in direct contact with the surface oxide of the powders and the surface to be soldered. Consequently, during reflow, any residual oxide can be expected to have some flux adhered to it. In the case of solder preform with added flux, the higher activity flux eliminated the oxide more rapidly and more thoroughly, thus leaving fewer spots for the flux to adhere to. Void contents in all cases of nitrogen reflow are consistently lower than the air-reflowed samples. Silver epoxy with a higher thermal conductivity (60W/mK) than Pb-Sn eutectic solder did not produce low-resistance interfaces. We found that thermal conductivity of the interface material is not the most crucial factor in reducing thermal resistance, rather it is the contact thermal resistance of the interfaces, which constitutes the largest part of the total interfacial thermal resistance. Process optimization with applied pressure and nitrogen reflow resulted in a significant lowering of contact resistance (from 0.55°C/W to 0.25°C/W) for the solder preform interfaces. We concluded that contact resistance needs to be duly accounted for in thermal modeling for an accurate representation of an interface; at the same time, the module attachment process must be tailored to reduce contact resistance for improved thermal management. / Ph. A performance model for wormhole-switched interconnection networks under self-similar traffic.

Min, Geyong, Ould-Khaoua, M. January 2004 (has links)
No / Many recent studies have convincingly demonstrated that network traffic exhibits a noticeable self-similar nature which has a considerable impact on queuing performance. However, the networks used in current multicomputers have been primarily designed and analyzed under the assumption of the traditional Poisson arrival process, which is inherently unable to capture traffic self-similarity. Consequently, it is crucial to reexamine the performance properties of multicomputer networks in the context of more realistic traffic models before practical implementations show their potential faults. In an effort toward this end, this paper proposes the first analytical model for wormhole-switched k-ary n-cubes in the presence of self-similar traffic. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed model exhibits a good degree of accuracy for various system sizes and under different operating conditions. The analytical model is then used to investigate the implications of traffic self-similarity on network performance. This study reveals that the network suffers considerable performance degradation when subjected to self-similar traffic, stressing the great need for improving network performance to ensure efficient support for this type of traffic.

Direito homogêneo: harmonização, uniformização e ambivalência do direito nacional / Homogeneous law: harmonization, uniformization and ambivalence of national law.

Andrade, Rogério Emilio de 14 June 2010 (has links)
In the scope of the global economic organization, the international integration of markets led to a limitation of the role of public institutions regarding the markets because of the economic power repercussion of the capital in the decision-making of internal economic policy: the world structuring of markets only becomes plausible by the institutionalization of Law in the national States. Thus, the national Law tends to standardize and harmonize the regulation of the capital: it is the homogenization of the Law as the resulting needs of an economic interdependence, which leaves the national States to adopt the necessary institutions to the capital development. It is this that turns the planetary will homogeneous through legal artificiality that allows the Law gives out of the terrestrial bonds and historical traditions, instituting the legal spatiality. Free from the old nomos, which links the Law to places, to a historical and specific determination of a community, the Law gives place to the new nomos, which detaches itself from the traditional bonds and fully assumes the artificiality character by extending itself to the planetary dimensions of the techno-economy. Despite the States continue to play an important role, it should be noticed that their economic sovereignty was tinged: before, they had an absolute power over the economy, whereas they now have a relative power. The transformations and institutional arrangements that were congruent in national level are now scattered in multiple spatial levels as the economic performance requires actors to be simultaneously coordinated in all spatial areas and they need to be allocated and nested in institutional arrangements connected to all levels of reality. In that context, Government Nets constitute a good instrument of public policies both for the developed countries and for the developing countries that attempt to take part of the global regulatory process and need to reinforce their capacity of domestic governance. It can be said that from the homogeneity of the Law on, this work aims at studying three simultaneous and distinct movements that have been influencing the normative output of the national States: the harmonization, the uniformization and the ambivalence of the Law. A literature review was presented with the objective of looking for specific information as well as knowing the theoretical contributions of the field. Based on those theoretical contributions, it was possible to keep a dialogue with two important theoretical tendencies that prevail in the analysis of the subject: first, the technical theoretical tendency, supported by the relevance of the role of Public Administrations in the process of global market regulation; second, the political theoretical tendency aims at establishing political mechanisms of neutralization and compensation of the globalization effects. In line with those theoretical tendencies, this study was committed to the concrete reality and it was simultaneously engaged with the transformation of that same reality. Therefore, the study aimed at showing the ways the economic forces influence the legal phenomena and the Law, as a political instrument, can and does affect the economy.

Efeito de variáveis de treino e teste sobre a recombinação de repertórios em pombos (Columba Livia), ratos (Rattus norvegicus) e corvos da Nova Caledônia (Corvus moneduloides) / Effects of training and test variables upon the interconnection of repertoires in pigeons (Columba livia), rats (Rattus norvegicus) and new caledonian crows (Corvus moneduloides)

Neves Filho, Hernando Borges 30 April 2015 (has links)
Much was debated about the effects of training variables upon the solution of a problem, especially concerning the sudden solution of specific problem, called Insight. The present work aimed to investigate the solution of different problem in different species after the independent training of pre-requisite repertoires. Additionally, tests regarding the understanding of functional properties of stimuli were made. In Experiment I, two pigeons (Columba livia) were tested in the box-displacement test. The subjects learned to, a) push a box towards a target, and b) to climb and peck another target. The final task required to subjects to push one box towards a target hanging in the ceiling, climb the box and then peck the target. The two subjects solved the final task. In Experiment II, four pigeons had an asymmetric training of the two abilities. Only one of the subjects solved the final task, not as fluidly as the subjects from Experiment I. In Experiment III, the consequence used during the training of each ability was different. Pushing towards a target was reinforced with food, and to climb and peck with water. None of the four birds solved the task in its first presentation. All the subjects that solved the tasks in Experiments I, II and III showed similar performances in the tests regarding the understanding of functional properties of stimuli, suggesting that even minima changes in the test situation can impair the solution. Experiment IV employed a new task, with rats (Rattus norvegicus). Subjects learned to a) digg shavings, and b) climb stairs. In the final task, the rats had to digg and find a passage leading to another ambient containing stairs that lead to food. Two rats that learned the two abilities solved the problem, suddenly. Other four rats that learned only one of the two abilities (dig or climb) didnt solved the problem. Experiment V tested the effects of quantities of training (Experiment II), consequences of trained abilities (Experiment III), and context of training and testing with new caledonian crows (Corvus moneduloides). All four crows solved the problem, but not suddenly. The data of all experiments suggests that the sudden solution, when acquired through the interconnection of repertoires is more subtle then it is usualy regarded, and that variables of training and testing are crucial for the solution of a problem

Economic analysis of the cross-border coordination of operation in the European power system / L’analyse économique de la coordination aux frontières internes du système électrique européen

Janssen, Tanguy 18 February 2014 (has links)
The electricity high voltage transmission networks are interconnected over most of the continents but this is not the case of the power system organizations. Indeed, as described with the concept of integrated power system, the organization over these large networks is divided by several kinds of internal borders. In this context, the research object, the cross-border coordination of operation, is a set of coordination arrangements over internal borders between differing regulatory, technical and market designs. These arrangements can include for instance the famous market couplings, some cost-sharing agreements or common security assessments among several other solutions. The existence and improvement of the cross-border coordination of operation can be beneficial to the whole integrated power system. This statement is verified in the European case as in 2012 where several regional and continental coordination arrangements are successfully implemented. In order to benefit from the European experience and contribute to support the European improvement process, this thesis investigates the cross-border coordination of operation in the European case with four angles of study. First, a modular framework is built to describe the existing solutions and the implementation choices from a regulatory point of view. Second, the thesis analyses the tools available to assess the impact of an evolution of the cross-border coordination. Third, the role of the European Union (EU) is described as critical both for the existing arrangements and to support the improvement process. The last angle of study focuses on two dimensions of the economic modes of coordination between transmission system operators.
