This dissertation presents a self-reflexive case study which I will call an autoethnography of translation. The study describes my own relationship, as a translator, to the North American author H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), one of the most representative creations of the horror genre in literature. In order to investigate that relationship, I utilize a qualitative research methodology which combines two instruments: life histories and verbal protocols (which I also refer to as translation protocols). During the analysis of the data collected, I attempt to verify the applicability to translation processes of certain psychoanalytic theories: the neo-Lacanianism of the writing theorist Mark Bracher (1999); the post-Lacanianism of Julia Kristeva and her notions of the Semiotic Register and the abject; the concept of the translation love relationship (or love affair) and the idea of the singular in translation writing processes of the Brazilian translation theorist Maria Paula Frota (2000); and the ¿Lacandemonic Schema¿ of the North American theorist of translation Douglas Robinson (2001). The focus of the investigation is the translator¿s visibility. I also make use of theories of reception in order to understand the implications ¿ including ethical implications ¿ of a translation relationship characterized as unhappy love, and which is constructed through the erasure of important aspects of the source text / Mestrado / Tradução / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

[en] INTERPRETERS IN THEIR PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENT. FOR A STRONGER VOICE MASTER S DISSERTATION / [pt] O INTÉRPRETE EM SEU MEIO PROFISSIONAL: POR UMA VOZ MAIS ALTAREBECCA FRANCES ATKINSON 24 July 2006 (has links)
[pt] O presente trabalho enfoca a interpretação enquanto
atividade social e o
outras partes interessadas
em eventos mediados por interpretação simultânea. O
objetivo principal é
caracterizar e explicar as atitudes e crenças do
as fontes e naturezas
especificamente, no
Brasil.
profissionais.
A atividade de interpretação é caracterizada
historicamente em contraste
com a tradução, e as atitudes predominantes relativas a
ambas as áreas em
determinadas épocas históricas são descritas. São
destacadas as rápidas
transformações ocorridas a partir do século XX, tanto nas
atividades em si como
na sua estruturação profissional e acadêmica. Para
identificar as crenças e atitudes
Bourdieu.
São identificadas as normas inicial e preliminares
presentes no mercado
e as possíveis
sinergias com a academia. / [en] This study views interpreting as a socially-oriented
activity and the
professional interpreter as an agent who interacts with
the other stakeholders at
events mediated by simultaneous interpreting. Its main aim
is to describe and
explain interpreters´ attitudes and beliefs regarding
their profession, as well as
their actions and reactions concerning the other agents
who take part in the events
at which they work. The source and nature of the pressures
and restrictions which
affect interpreters´ performance are identified, as is the
profession´s response to
them on a worldwide and national (Brazilian) level. These
issues are viewed from
the perspective of interpreters themselves, taking their
own professional
experiences and expectations as the core focus.
A historical overview of interpreting is presented in
contrast with that of
translation and the prevailing attitudes towards both
areas at given moments in
time are described. The rapid changes as of the 20th
century seen in both the
activities and their respective professional and academic
structuring are given
special attention. In order to identify the interpreters´
beliefs and attitudes and the
restrictions they feel, the findings of interviews held
with professionals who work
in Rio de Janeiro are presented. The data are analysed
from two complementary
perspectives: Gideon Toury´s translation norms and Pierre
Bourdieu´s concepts of
habitus and field.
The initial and preliminary norms present in the Rio
market are identified, as
are those behaviours that indicate the existence of a
shared habitus in the
profession, along with those that point to issues as yet
unconsolidated. When the
data from the interviews are analysed together with the
information about the
profession´s historical development, it is concluded that
the profession represents
a field or sub-field in formation. The implications of the
current process of
consolidation in the profession are raised, as are its
potential synergies with the
academic world.

A comparative analysis of fansubbing and professional DVD subtitlingWilcock, Simone 20 November 2013 (has links)
M.A. (Applied Linguistics and Literary Theory) / Fan subtitling, or fansubbing, has become a new form of subtitling, in which fans, often with little to no training, subtitle a film or series they enjoy, and then release the subtitles or a subtitled version of the film on the internet for free download, often by other fans, who often have an interest in the source language and culture and who may have an interest in using subtitles as a language-learning device. Subtitles produced for this fan audience can differ substantially from those created in a professional environment. For this reason, fansubs could be seen as a new genre of subtitling, employing strategies that would be unacceptable in a professional subtitled product aimed at general consumption. Professional subtitlers and translators are encouraged to follow the norms or ‘best practice’ of their industry in order to produce subtitles that are consistent, of a high quality and that have been made easy to process through methods such as length reduction and domestication. Fansubbers have no such imperatives imposed on their subtitles, being mostly self-taught and often judged by their peers and viewers on the ‘authenticity’ of their translations, rather than by other professionals and their standards. This creates an environment in which more creative translation strategies and presentation become possible, in order to create a translation that will be approved of by fans with a special interest in linguistic and cultural content. This need for the appearance of faithfulness or authenticity seems to result in a more source-oriented and complete translation approach, and a corpus-based investigation of French fansubs appears to confirm this. This dissertation attempts to explore the differences found in the two genres by analysing and comparing a translational corpus of professionally-produced and fanproduced English subtitles of French films. The average length of the subtitles and instances of discourse markers in the two sets of subtitles are compared in order to determine the degree of reduction found in each type of subtitle, and from the source to target culture. The translation strategies used in the two types of subtitling differ, with the fansub opting for a more complete rendering of the source text dialogue and a more source-oriented approach, which retains elements of spoken language found in the film dialogue. It appears that the differences between the target texts may be influenced by very different contexts in which they are produced, and possibly the differing needs and expectations of the audiences of the two genres.

'n Funksionele model vir kulturelekonteksaanpassing in literêre vertalingFerreira, Stefanus Cornelius 10 September 2012 (has links)

Převod konativní funkce v simultánním tlumočení na příkladu českých a anglických projevů v Evropském parlamentu / The transfer of conative function in simultaneous interpreting using the example of Czech and English speeches at the European ParliamentChmelařová, Jitka January 2018 (has links)
The present theoretical-empirical diploma thesis in the field of interpreting studies analyses the transfer of conative function in bidirectional simultaneous interpreting between Czech and English. The theoretical part of the thesis presents an overview of the present knowledge in relation to the conative or persuasive function of language and its transfer in interpreting. The methodological framework and initial hypothesis underlying the empirical part of the thesis are then defined. The research material used for the quantitative-qualitative research consists of a corpus of recordings of original and interpreted speeches from the European Parliament. The aim of the present thesis is to explore to what degree the conative function, being the dominant language function in political discourse, is preserved in the interpreted versions of the speeches, on the basis of which debates in this multilingual institution take place. The empirical research follows from a contrastive analysis of the transfer of individual categories of the means of the conative function in simultaneous interpreting for the given language pair. Results of the research are interpreted in terms of the characteristics of the original speech, type of interpreting and directionality.

Profesionální tlumočník ve 21. století: nové technologie a sociální sítě / Professional interpreter in the 21st century: new technologies and social networksStoklasová, Hedvika January 2017 (has links)
The topic of this master's thesis is new technologies and social networking sites in the field of interpreting. The theoretical part discusses how, over the course of time, technological advances have altered not only the face of interpreting itself but also the way interpreters work, and presented them with new possibilities. This part also briefly deals with the history and functioning of social networks, namely Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and examines the possibilities social networking sites offer in terms of marketing. The empirical part presents conclusions drawn from the study. The purpose of the study was to determine general tendencies in the use of new technologies and social networks by Czech interpreters. The questionnaire distributed online focused mainly on the following points: ownership of smartphones and tablets, awareness of technical novelties in interpreting, use of social networks for professional and marketing purposes. A total of 150 people took part in the study. The analysis of collected answers revealed that the number of tablet or smartphone owners amongst the participants is quite high, that participants are skeptical towards nontraditional ways of interpreting and that interpreters use social networking sites rather for communicating within the interpreting community...

Kreativita v simultánním tlumočení / Creativity in simultaneous interpretingVčelicová, Tereza January 2016 (has links)
This work deals with creativity in simultaneous interpreting. It regroups knowledge about the creativity in different fields, mainly in psychology, and presents the actual state of the research of creativity in translatology. It brings out the similarity of interpreting with improvisation and art, which are both highly creative. On the basis of the existing models of process of interpreting, it proposes an empirical study of the product of interpreting, using language transformations, with the aim to prove that simultaneous interpreting is a creative activity on more levels (lexical, syntactical and semantic). This experiment was not convincing on a lexical level, but in general it helped to confirm that interpreters are creative during simultaneous interpreting.
