The labour of love songs : voicing intimacy in Somaliland

This dissertation is about the work of love songs in Hargeysa, Somaliland. In a setting where music and expressions of love are conspicuously absent from public soundscapes, I explore the lives and labour of a genre as it moves and is moved across time and space, the singing and speaking voices that animate these songs, and the entanglement of love songs in the mediation of intimacy and the shaping of contested post-war soundscapes. What, I ask, is a love song? In a setting marked by war, where music-making and expressions of love are contested, what do love songs do? And how do they do what they do? In answering these questions, I take love songs in motion as my primary ethnographic object and investigate the "labour" of love songs in two senses: the intimate human labour by which love songs are made, circulated, heard, performed and put to assorted uses, and the social-aesthetic-affective labour that a genre itself performs. Based on eighteen months of field-research with poets, musicians, singers, music-lovers and love-suffering audiences in Hargeysa, I track love songs through various stages of their multi-faceted lives: as they first come into the world through the collaboration of a poet and his muse, a musician and a singer; as they circulate and are re-animated alongside stories of singers and stories of encounters; as they are re-figured by the ears and voices of attentive listeners; as their sounding is learned by musicians; and as their live performance is negotiated and received in contested urban terrain. I show the primary labour of love songs to be the distillation, performance and creation of intimate social relations: intimate relations predicated on "dareen-wadaag" ("feeling-sharing") that transcend everyday cleavages and prohibitions, and that have the power to shape both individuals' personal intimate lives and the socio-political worlds in which songs move and do their work. I argue that love songs' ability to distill and open space for intimacy rests on an ideology of voice that figures the voice as a deeply personal mode of self-expression and the simultaneously multi-vocal practices of voicing by which love songs are animated. In other words, the "voice" is made - and made intimate - by its multi-faceted multi-vocal sociality. In so doing, this dissertation contributes to understandings of the workings and power of popular culture in Africa and beyond, recent anthropological efforts to hold together the sonic and social dynamics of the "voice", and broader anthropological conversations about the mediated, multi-vocal making of persons and social worlds.

À partir de deux enquêtes au sein d’établissements pour personnes âgées dépendantes, une ethnographie de la relation soignant-soigné tente de décrypter la cinétique relationnelle durant l’acte de la toilette. Loin de l’évidence, le refus exprimé parfois violemment par des personnes atteintes de maladie d’Alzheimer, est ressenti par les équipes comme une offense à l’aide proposée. Pourtant ce geste quotidien de bien-être et de confort, par sa fonction de modelage et d’apprivoisement corporel devient un espace de communication sensible permettant de renouer un lien identitaire en cours d’amoindrissement. La présente recherche propose une analyse sur les formes de contractualisation relationnelle des intimes en situation de maladie et d’accompagnement. Dégageant les influences sécuritaires d’une organisation médico-sociale, le temps de la toilette devient un soin protégé relevant d’un espace transitionnel. L’étude particulière d’un soin de toilette permettra de comprendre les processus relationnels dans le temps et l’espace à partir du travail des émotions. L’intime s’intersubjective dans des présences jusqu’au bout de la vie, interrogeant des interactions de reconnaissances mutuelles en mouvement.La méthodologique adoptée traduit ce parcours aux frontières des intimes d’un sujet et d’une démarche dans un contexte de configuration gérontologique. / From two surveys in institutions for the elderly, an ethnography of the doctor-patient relationship attempts to decipher the relational dynamic during the act of personal hygiene for the patient. Not at all obvious, the sometimes violent refusal from people with Alzheimer's disease, is interpreted as offensive to the proposed care. Yet this daily gesture of care-giving and comfort by the creation of familiarity and trust becomes a moment of communication that can strengthen a weakening bond.This research presents an analysis of the types of relationships in the personal context of the disease and of accompaniment. Setting aside the safety imperatives of a medico-social organization, the moment of personal hygiene is a priviledged transistional act. This particular approach to care-giving in personal hygiene can, over time, identify the relational processes from an emotional perspective. The intimate inter-subjectivity lasting until the end of life creating a dialogue of mutual respect and acknowledgement.An appropriate methodology traces this journey to the beginnings of intimacy, a topic and an approach in a context of a gerontological structure.

<p>Contemporary family life and intimate relationships today are characterised by increasing heterogeneity. In the growing body of research on this differentiation, the role of the elderly people has largely been ignored. But to an increasing extent the "young old" (65-74 years of age), in particular, are active participants in the process of the differentiation of intimate relationships. One of the least researched contributions of the elderly to the restructuring of contemporary intimate relationships is the establishment of lastint intimate relationships that do not include a mutual home, i.e. an alternative to marriage or other forms of cohabition. This type of relationship is referred to as Living Apart Together (henceforth LAT-relationships. In Swedish: särboende). The aim of this thesis is to examine LAT-relationships among elderly heterosexual individuals in Sweden, focusing in particular on the influence of this type of relationship on commitments, intimacy and autonomy. A major dilemma is the question of who should provide the care and service that ageing often demands. A pluralistic methodological approach has been adopted in the four differnt papers in this thesis, whick includes the use of a qualitative pilot study, a broad quantitative questionnaire study, a qualitative interview study and finally a qualitative study with a lifestory perspective.</p>

Due to a recent increase in usage of the concept of intimacy within social scientific research, the overarching aim of this work is to investigate its meaning and significance in contemporary social life. The first part of the thesis reviews research on intimacy. Intimacy is perceived as being vaguely defined as a concept, leading to insufficient discussions concerning the significance of intimacy both as a social concept and as a social phenomenon in contemporary western society. In order to become more clearly defined as a social concept to use in future research, intimacy needs to be investigated as a social phenomenon. The second part explores and analyses intimacy as a social phenomenon by way of three partly phenomenological and partly theoretical analyses: the phenomenology of intimacy, the arithmetic of intimacy and the dark sides of intimacy. The three analyses result in a definition of intimacy understood as a kind of sociality, or mode of social being, characterized by an oceanic experience, mutual and complete directedness between the ones being in relation, an experience of mental as well as physical closeness, and an experience of time as “durée”. The third part discusses the proposed definition of intimacy as sociality in relation to contemporary social theory. In relation to an understanding of contemporary western society as late modern or radicalized modern, intimacy as sociality is discussed as a radicalization of a rational sociality, characteristic for modern society. The discussion takes the form of a dialectic critique of modern dualistic theories, proposing a triadic (dialectic) alternative for understanding basic forms of sociality and social relations. The vague notion of intimacy as a concept suited to characterize social life in contemporary western society is supported by this proposition.

By the latter quarter of the eighteenth century, as the movement against the slave trade increased in Britain, Creoles, those of British ancestry born in the West Indies, were increasingly criticized for their involvement in slavery. Simon Taylor, a Jamaican-born planter of Scottish ancestry who lived most of his life in the colony, attempted to negotiate competing and often contradictory sensibilities and subject positions as both British and Creole. One of the central challenges to Taylor’s negotiation of identity was his long-term relationship with Grace Donne, a free mixed-race woman of colour. An examination of their relationship highlights the ways binary discourses and exclusionary practices devised to create and reinforce rigid racial boundaries were regularly crossed and blurred, even by an individual like Simon Taylor, a person well placed to benefit from the policing and maintenance of those boundaries.
