Utopias pós-modernas: uma leitura da triologia marciana de Kim Stanley Robinson / Post modern utopias: a reading of the Mars Trilogy of Kim Stanley Robinson

Bertolotto, Rodrigo Marcelo Viña 04 March 2009 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to present a reading of Mars Trilogy, by Kim Stanley Robinson, published in 1993 (Reds Mars), 1994 (Green Mars), and 1996 (Blue Mars). By questioning his idea of utopia, reinforced by the materialist critic Fredric Jameson in Archaeologies of the Future (2005), I investigate the postmodern and multicultural solution for an ideal society they both propose. Therefore, one of the main purposes of this dissertation is to discuss this fragmented utopia and how its result reveals the historical perspective and the point of view. Another drive is to demonstrate that the United States construct the imagery behind the trilogy, repeating a tradition in the local science fiction.

In this sense the choise of the author Fredric Jameson is closely related to their position regarding the debate on postmodern. Against all expectations in relation to post-modern theories of crisis metanarrativas, the author think the postmodern in a less pessimistic in a narrative reflect on what Marxist discussion and its relationship with history. However, the assessment in relation to the concept of totality before running through a critical theoretical categories of modernism (its ideology and utopia intrinsic) rather than the process of aggregation of the system. Thus, the questions of Fredric Jameson in relation to post-modern theories renewing him examining the superstructure of artistic and textual phenomena, which allows you to have a panoramic view over the contemporary cultural sphere. From this perspective, and assuming postmodernism as an ally cultural of advanced capitalism, or late, we seek to undertake a reassessment of Marxism from the postmodern critique of ideology and utopia‟s own high-modernism.

L’Irlandaise et le Peau-Rouge : le jeu des identités dans la production canadienne d’Anna Jameson / The Red Man and the Irish Woman : Identities at Play in Anna Jameson’s Canadian Narrative, Letters and Drawings

Quaireau, Anne-Florence 16 November 2013 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on Irish authoress Anna Jameson’s artistic and personal production during her travel to Canada from December 1836 to December 1837, namely: her travel narrative, Winter Studies and Summer Rambles in Canada (1838), the album of sketches she drew while there, and the letters she wrote during the period. A joint analysis of these three media reveals the political scope of the traveller-writer’s elaborating of her identity. Her generic negotiations — delivering a narrative at the crossroads between diary, letter and travel writing —, her ethnographic writing of the Indian, as well as her perception of the Canadian landscape, all serve a proto-feminist agenda, arguing first and foremost for the education of women. From Europe to Canada, in a perpetual shift between collective and individual identity, travelling enables re-envisioning: the representation of Canada becomes a revision of Great Britain, the writing of the Other turns into a reconstruction of the Self, and conversely. The travel narrative becomes the locus of the refiguration of Jameson’s identity, as her contact with Others — settlers or Indians —, at times through differentiation, at times through identification, enables her to rewrite herself as a free woman. The freedom which writing allows for is manifest in the play of identities, in the rambling through which Anna Jameson reconfigures the definition of woman in the 19th century.

"Desirable images": Sexual mapping in William S. Burroughs's Naked lunch and Samuel R. Delany's Dhalgren

McGowan, Patrick 01 June 2009 (has links)
In "Postmodernism, or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism," Fredric Jameson describes the disappearance, within postmodernism, of an objective framework for mapping the social totality. In order to illustrate this concept, Jameson draws upon the ideas of urban planner Kevin Lynch as formulated in his seminal work, The Image of the City. For Lynch, the design of the postwar alienated city results in varying and fragmentary "cognitive maps" used by its inhabitants to negotiate urban space, a problem that can be rectified by "good" urban planning, which aims to create mappable public space through the implementation of external orientation markers. Utilizing this framework, this thesis suggests the existence of an aesthetic countertendency, within postwar literature, to Jameson's vision that is exemplified in William S. Burroughs's Naked Lunch and Samuel R. Delany's Dhalgren. These novels integrally deploy alienated urban environments as settings; however, rather than suggesting structural public spaces as solutions, they offer an alternative, opposite stratagem: the externalization of the intimate onto the public sphere through the integration of pornography. By using the sexual to map character space, they suggest an alternative to Michel Foucault's discursive formulation of sexuality, one that resonates with more recent theoretical work by Leo Bersani and Michael Warner. In order to examine the role of pornography within these works, this thesis integrates Frances Ferguson's account of the pornographic from her study, Pornography, the Theory, which looses pornography from prior "interpretive" models and recasts it as a distinct regime of representation that stresses objectivity and concretization, particularly in relation to the abstract notion of the "social body." While Delany's Dhalgren offers an image- based deployment of the pornographic experience, in which characters' viewing of the pornographic / sexual leads to full cognition and visual perception, Burroughs's Naked Lunch presents a more physical model, wherein subjective sexual experience (particularly in the rendering of the "mosaic orgasm") ultimately affords the subject with panoptic capabilities.

In dialogue with English modernism : Storm Jameson's early formation as a writer, 1919-1931

Gerrard, Deborah January 2010 (has links)
After a period during which Storm Jameson’s restricted literary identity has been that of the politically engaged woman writer, critical interest in the intellectual and stylistic complexities of her work is now reviving. Yet Jameson’s background in early English modernism and the manner in which it enriches her writing continues to pass unnoticed. This thesis uncovers new evidence of Jameson’s immersion in the early English modernisms of Alfred Orage’s Leeds Arts Club and New Age journal and of Dora Marsden’s journals, the New Freewoman and the Egoist, as an avant-garde student before the Great War. Drawing analogies with the post-colonial notions of ‘Manichean delirium’ and of ‘writing back to the centre’, this thesis argues that, subsequently – as a provincial socialist woman writer struggling to make her way at the predominantly male and elitist cultural centre – Jameson developed a vexed outsider-insider relation to English modernism which she expressed during the 1920s in a series of intertextual novels critiquing the contemporary cultural scene. It examines each of these novels chronologically, beginning with Jameson’s critique of the early modernisms of Orage, Marsden and associated writers in her first two novels, before moving on to her engagement, in turn, with the work of D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf and Wyndham Lewis. Employing a socially oriented model of intertextuality, this thesis reads each novel synchronically as a sceptical and often witty probing of some of the polarised, and frequently contradictory, positions taken within the modernist debate. It also interprets the 1920s fiction diachronically as a developmental journey towards what Jennifer Birkett terms the ‘stylised realism’ of the 1930s and 40s, in which William James’s Pragmatism plays a central role, allowing Jameson to assimilate those intellectual and stylistic elements within English modernism that she values before leaving the rest behind.

The present work consisted in solving the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, in conservative and structured forms, in the two-dimensional space, employing a finite difference formulation for spatial discretization. It was implemented the Jameson and Mavriplis algorithm to perform the numerical experiments, as well the isotropic scalar linear and nonlinear models of Pulliam, aiming to provide numerical stability to the algorithm. The Backward Euler method for explicit marching in time was also implemented to accelerate the convergence process. The physical problems of free and internal flows for the ramp and rectangular channel with obstacle configurations were studied, respectively. A spatially variable time step is employed aiming to accelerate the convergence to the steady state solution. The main objective was to implement computational tools to the future application in the nuclear sector of numerical techniques widely applied in aeronautical problems, due to the common employed governing equations of the fluid motion, for preliminary studies of density, velocity, pressure, Mach number and energy contours to the flow of gas helium coolant present in the core of the Very High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor, the VHTGR. A study involving the algorithm’s characteristics in relation to the overall quality of the solution is also accomplished. After the simulations, it was found good behavior of Jameson and Mavriplis algorithm, as well as satisfactory performance of the linear and nonlinear Pulliam operators in scheme convergence, showing the nonlinear model as providing better treatment to the numerical solutions obtained.

This work consists of a reading of Fredric Jameson's book, Brecht and Method. One of the most important theorists of postmodernism, Jameson discusses in this book the validity of Brecht to the present day; he shows how ideas, narratives and language make up a brechtian method that also merges with what could be called a dialectical attitude. Due to the complexity of Jameson?s exposition, some theoretical threads were choosen to organize the discussion. The objectives of this study are therefore exploring the critic?s arguments, unraveling them and trying to explain the way they operate, particularly in the Brazilian context. For this purpose, a detailed reading of Jameson?s propositions was carried out and contributions from other scholars about the same topics were taken into account. From that the three chapters this thesis result: a confrontation between the reflection on Brecht's history in Brazil and an explanation of the knowledge required to read Brecht and Method, a paraphrase of the book's main ideas and hypothesis along with the discussion of the centrality of the actor in Brechtian work and, finally, a commentary on Jameson's writing / Mestrado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Mestre em Teoria e História Literária
