The integration of the Myers and Briggs type indicator in a marriage counselling approach

Pienaar, Jan Adriaan 30 April 2004 (has links)
The aim of this study is to determine the influence of personality type as described by Jungian personality theory on marriage problems and to determine the usability of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to solve problems in the understanding and appreciating of individual personality differences. The research depicts the importance of self-awareness to maintain significant relationships. Self-awareness is conceptualised as an integral part of personality psychology. Accurate personality assessment is described as a means to gain accurate self-awareness. A literature study is done on personality theories to discover what role they play in marriage counselling. The question - where does the personality theory of Jung fit into personality psychology and marriage counselling - is answered. The Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator® as an application of Jungian personality theory and an assessment technique to gain accurate self-awareness is discussed. A literature study of different marriage counselling approaches is presented and the focus of these approaches is discussed. None of these approaches used personality theory explicitly. A marriage counselling approach is developed which integrates the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The approach has five pillars: 1. Developing mutual trust 2. Recognizing and accepting individual differences 3. Giving and receiving feedback 4. Solving problems 5. Letting go of the past The research presents case studies, which confirm that the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator does help individuals and couples to become self-aware and develop awareness of the differences between their personality types. This self-awareness helps to rebuild marital relationships. / Practical Theology / DTH (PRACTICAL THEOLOGY)

(Re)making men, representing the Caribbean Nation: authorialIndividuation in works by Fred D’Aguiar, Robert Antoni, andMarlon James

Unknown Date (has links)
This dissertation proposes that West Indian contemporary male writers develop literary authority, or a voice that represents the nation, via a process of individuation. This process enables the contemporary male writer to unite the disparities of the matriarchal and patriarchal authorial traditions that inform his development of a distinctive creative identity. I outline three stages of authorial individuation that are inspired by Jung’s theory of individuation. The first is the contemporary male writer’s return to his nationalist forebears’ tradition to dissolve his persona, or identification with patriarchal authority; Fred D’Aguiar’s “The Last Essay About Slavery” and Feeding the Ghosts illustrate this stage. The second is his reconciliation of matriarchal (present) and patriarchal (past) traditions of literary authority via his encounter with his forebears’ feminized, raced shadow; Robert Antoni’s Blessed Is the Fruit evidences this process. The third is the contemporary male writer’s renunciation of authority defined by masculinity, which emerges as his incorporation of the anima, or unconscious feminine; Marlon James’s The Book of Night Women exemplifies this final phase of his individuation. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013.

Unknown Date (has links)
Within the Caribbean, the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique are unusual: they are French overseas departments and thus also European Union members. As such, they must assimilate to French national culture even though their heterogeneous populations, mainly descendants of exploited imported labour, have their own unique island identity. Their heavy economic dependence on France and the effects of modernization and globalization pose further identitarian challenges for them. Franco-Antillean literature clearly reflects this long-standing identity confusion. This thesis explores two very recent novels— Toxic Island by Guadeloupean Ernest Pépin and L’Empreinte à Crusoé by Martinican Patrick Chamoiseau— and their divergent stylistic treatments of individuation. Both are inspired by Édouard Glissant’s theories of Relation and Tout- Monde; both engage questions of language, orality, the island space, race, the subject of alterity and the role of the arts and artists in identity formation. Yet both are also marked by distinctly unique forms of ambivalence. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015 / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

The used methodology was based on a phenomenologic research from the study of ten cases in clinic attendance of individuals who spontaneously sought the cited service. It is important to note that the emergency attendance was offered for free by a convenant between the cited University and the Brasilian Public Heath System (SUS). The cases were treated and analyzed in the light of Jungian referencial. The attendance was carried out by six emergency psychologists previously selected and with a minimum of one year experience in clinical attendance. Three sessions were carried out for each patient and also a follow-up interview, was performed a month after the end of the Emergengy psychological attendance process. The group of emergency psychologists had a weekly supervision during the six month the research was performed. A detailed report of the clinical work as well as the personal perceptions of the emergency psychologists was delivered for each case of the program. The same has occurred with the supervisor-researcher who was responsible for the follow up interviews which reflected the patients feelings about the research. As a result, it was generated pool of ten reports from the psychologists about the attended patients?processes, ten follow-up interviews and ten perception reports from the supervisor-researcher about her personal understanding of the process as a whole. The emergency psychologists? reports, as well as the data obtained on the follow-up interview were divided in unities of significate which possibilitate the elaboration of specific syntheses, both from the emergency psychologist and the patient and from the supervisor-researcher. Thus, it was obtained three general syntheses refering to the lived element related to the research focus. The main results obtained show that, when the Emergency Psychological Attendance empathizes with the patient who needs psychological care, in the exact moment of his (her) crysis, treats with different times: one internal ( the patient time) and other external (the chronological time) and thus reaches such relevant results as to the contention of anguish in a brief time. Both Emergency Psychologists and patients experience a highly rich moment for their psyche, which makes viable the archetype of the wounded physician which, when constelating, assists the patient to recapture the hability to carry out his (her) autocure. Therefore, it is considered that Intervention Model used in the Emergency Psychological Attendance arises as an enormous hope of speeding and dinamizing the clinical services delivered by Psychology, enhancing the resources of this science for people who needs it within the health care field.

It is an investigative study of relationship mother-baby. The bibliography compiled has suggested that the mother or the individual taking on the mother´s role has a key role in the process of falling asleep and maintaining baby´s sleep. Simultaneously, having a good and restful night sleep was something much valued and attempted by the parents. By applying the technique of change of sleep habits, which has been developed by the author, this study analyses three pairs of mother-baby basing its findings on the Jungian theory. The objective of the study has been achieved since the technique has proved to be efficient when stipulating different intervals of waiting time, according to psychological resources characterized by each phase of the human development. By providing an exclusive time for the mother-baby interaction through giving the baby a body massage, the baby was offered different experiences, both of primary bond and separation / O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar as possibilidades da aplicação de técnica de modificação dos hábitos de sono, em crianças com dificuldade para dormir, em um estudo investigativo da relação mãe-filho.

The material collected was analyzed based on the methodological guidelines for the Jungian paradigm. The analysis of the research projects identified the main methodological procedures adopted by the researchers, both for collecting and for interpreting the data, and the articulation between the objective of the research, the phenomenon selected as the object of research and the methodological procedures used to collect and analyze the material; the most frequent research modules were identified together with the main difficulties faced by the researchers in undertaking their research. Based on an analysis of the material collected, a research method for investigation into analytical psychology was proposed. The research process, within the Jungian paradigm, includes stages for apprehending and comprehending phenomena, during which methodological procedures and resources are used that are compatible with the basic guidelines for the paradigm, which include symbolic amplification. Special attention was given to the researcher s participation in the process, considering his/her function and academic background and more importantly, the development of a symbolic attitude to approach the work and within the relationship researcher-researched . This research also identifies the main risk that the research activity presents to the contemporary Jungian researcher, and consequently, the care that needs to be taken during the research process. Finally, the ethical implications of scientific activity in general are discussed, and particularly in the work of Jungian researchers.

Kaufmann, Irit Grau 24 May 2013 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T20:38:42Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Irit Grau Kaufmann.pdf: 5411599 bytes, checksum: 519d32c08de607411feb2898e6119403 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-05-24 / The present study aimed to investigate, under the approach of Jungian psychology, the possible motivations, purposes and meanings that patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) attach to their self-mutilating behavior. The study included six women, aged between 18 and 46 years, all diagnosed with BPD and self-mutilating behavior history. Data collecting made use of the revised diagnostic interview for borderlines (DIB-R) applied for diagnostic purposes and research participation , a semi-structured interview, the person and family drawing, and a thematic drawing. The collected data were analyzed in light of Jungian analytical and psychosomatic psychology. As a result of the compilation of the accounts given during the interviews, 5 categories and 13 subcategories were identified: difficulties in relationships (family, love and interpersonal), low self-esteem and negative self-image, sexual abuse, high tolerance to physical pain/low pain tolerance to emotional pain, self-mutilating behavior (objects, body sites, forms, triggers, feelings, symbolic representation, ideation and suicide attempts, altered state of consciousness). Results show fragile emotional bonds in family relations, pathological love relationships, dependency and instability in interpersonal relations. The findings indicate that patients have low self-esteem and negative self-image, as well as high tolerance to physical pain with low tolerance to emotional pain. It was also observed that during the self-mutilating behavior, an altered state of consciousness may occur. It can be said that the inability of these patients to symbolize and express their grief at the emotional level leads them to concretizing the pain expression on their bodies, through its transduction into physical pain, by means of self-mutilating behavior. This study concluded that the purpose of such behaviour is the relief of pain and pre-existing emotional distress / A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar, sob a abordagem da psicologia junguiana, as possíveis motivações, propósitos e significados que o paciente com transtorno de personalidade borderline (TPB) atribui ao seu comportamento automutilante.

Wändel, Björn January 2005 (has links)

Hermansson, Eva January 2008 (has links)
