The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to examine if there is any gender role stereotyping conveyed in recent children’s picture books. The picture books examined are the ten most popular which are selected by a combination of Bokjuryn in Sweden, 2005, and children voting. Furthermore there is a winner each year. The investigation concerns how protagonists, girls and boys, are portrayed and, moreover, if there are any breaches of traditional gender patterns. The method used consists of a qualitative text analysis and in order to be able to do this study a model of analysis is created. This model relates to gender researcher Lissa Pauls fourteen basic questions reduced to five fundamental categories and, to some extent, Gustaf Cavallius model for analyzing pictures. The five categories are the protagonist’s character traits, actions, relationship to surrounding individuals, the way she/he looks and in what settings we find the protagonists. In order to establish personal traits we use a schema consisting of a description of characters, traditionally associated with girls and boys. The result of the analysis reveals that gender role stereotyping still is common in the selected picture books. The male characters outnumber female, they are portrayed in a much more diverse way, are more in control of their life and engage more in adventurous activities further away from the home. These findings are consistent with Yvonne Hirdman’s, Ylva Elvin–Nowak’s and Heléne Thomsson’s theories about gender systems, male – female dichotomy, male domination and how we, as human beings, constantly are in the process of creating gender roles in our lives. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Psykologer och barn- och ungdomspsykiatrin kan förstås som delar av de professioner och institutioner som i Sverige är med och formar föräldraskapets innehåll och utformning. Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur psykologer inom barn- och ungdomspsykiatrin i Sverige konstruerar kön och etnicitet/ras i relation till föräldraskap samt att undersöka vilken funktion konstruktionerna har för att upprätthålla eller utmana hegemoniska konstruktioner av kön och etnicitet/ras. Tio psykologer verksamma inom barn- och ungdomspsykiatrin intervjuades och materialet analyserades med metoden kritisk diskurspsykologi. Resultatet visade att psykologer konstruerar kön som att moderskap består av självklar och nödvändig närvaro och faderskap av valbar, positiv och kompletterande närvaro. Moderskap konstrueras vidare som tillgänglighet och omsorgsfullhet, och som en möjlig orsak till barnets problem eller psykiska ohälsa. Psykologerna konstruerar även föräldrarnas kön heteronormativt samt konstruerar kön relaterat till föräldraskap som könsneutralt. Psykologerna konstruerar etnicitet/ras relaterat till föräldraskap som att etnicitet inte har någon betydelse, varvat med en konstruktion av ”vi mot dem”, där svenskar ställs mot icke-europeiska föräldrar, och där ”de andras” familjerelationer konstrueras som präglade av könsmakt. Konstruktionernas funktion diskuteras och värdera slutligen.

This essay examines constructions of gender in organizations through cultural material. The Swedish TV show Top Dog is analysed through a representation analysis. The research questions are about how the TV show produces or re-produces constructions of gender through gender patterns. The theory mainly used is organization theory with a gender perspective, which shows how cer-tain jobs are connected to gender, gender segregation within organizations and homosocial processes that create systems of power that oppress women. The results show that Top Dog is both reproducing already existing gender pat-terns, but also producing new patterns of gender.
