Ressonâncias de heróis e reis medievais na (re)construção dos personagens da Pedra do Reino por Ariano Suassuna / Resonances of medieval heroes and kings in the (re)construction of the character in Pedra do Reino by Ariano Suassuna

Mariângela Monsores Furtado Capuano 17 September 2014 (has links)
This research consists essentially in examining the dialogue established among Suassunas work and texts representing western literary tradition more properly concerning the medieval period. A selection of relations found in that novel concerning chivalry was then chosen, more specifically concerning the Quest for the Holy Grail (Demanda do Santo Graal) in its structure and in the psychological and moral design of the characters, especially Sinésio, who embodies the myth of the promised hero, whose paradigms regard the legendary figure of King Arthur, in addition to Galahad, and in King Sebastians historical figure, the King of Portugal who went missing. It is well-known that these mythical kings and heroes, considered saviors, wound once return to restitute people with their lost dignity and freedom, being part of the imaginary world in Iberia. They were brought to Brazil by European colonizers. Thus, the popular culture in Northeastern Brazil is filled with stories and legends rendered eternal and recreated in their regional folklore, as well as in the Cordel Literature (a popular form of literature in the region). Yet, aside from its messianic trait, another aspect is notable in Suassunas characters: cruelty. This theme, as well as the name of the character D. Pedro Dinis Quaderna, leads us to the story of certain Iberian Kings from the Middle Ages: Pedro of Portugal and Pedro of Castile, later revisited in the Crônica de D. Pedro by Fernão Lopes, aiming to observe the dialogue, directly or indirectly, with Suassunas writing

1603 - the wonderfull yeare : literary responses to the accession of James I

Lazar, Jessica January 2016 (has links)
'1603. The Wonderfull Yeare: Literary Responses to the Accession of James I' argues that when James VI of Scotland was proclaimed James I of England on 24 March 1603, the printed verse pamphlets that greeted his accession presented him as a figure of hope and promise for the Englishmen now subject to his rule. However, they also demonstrate hitherto unrecognized concerns that James might also be a figure of threat to the very national strength, Protestant progress, and moral, cultural, and political renaissance for which he was being touted as harbinger and champion. The poems therefore transform an insecure and undetermined figure into a symbol that represents (and enables) promise and hope. PART ONE explores how the poetry seeks to address the uncertainty and fragility, both social and political, that arose from popular fears about the accession; and to dissuade dissenters (and make secure and unassailable the throne, and thereby the state of England), through celebration of the new monarch. Perceived legal, political, and dynastic concerns were exacerbated by concrete difficulties when James was proclaimed King of England, and so he was more than fifty miles from the English border (only reaching London for the first time in early May); his absence was further prolonged by plague; this plague also deferred the immediate sanction of public festivities that should have accompanied his July coronation. An English Jacobean icon was configured in literature to accommodate and address these threats and hazards, neutralizing fears surrounding the idea of the accession with confidence in the idea of the king it brings. In the texts that respond to James's accession we observe his appropriation as a figure of hope and promise. PART 2 looks to more personal hopes and fears, albeit within the national context. It considers how the poets engage with the King's own established iconography and intentions, publicly available to view within his own writing - and especially poetry. The image that is already established there has the potential either to obstruct or to enable national and personal causes and ambitions (whether political, religious, or cultural). The poetry therefore develops strategies to negotiate with and so appropriate the King's own self-fashioning.

The reign of Zangī (521-541/1127-1146)

Alptekin, Coskun January 1972 (has links)
This study is concerned with the biography of Atabeg Zangi and the conditions prevailing during his reign; it contains a survey of relevant sources and notes on modern works which render information reflecting the subject. It is in six chapters together with an appendix concerning his titles. The first of the chapters endeavours to portray the background to his life by a biographical survey of his childhood, training and youthful development, the changing circumstances of which finally produced the great and even ruthless Atabeg who ruled Mosul. In the second chapter his service to the Seliuqs in the East and West are discussed. The struggles for power between the Maliks and Zangi's involvement with them is its theme, together with the role played by the 'Abbasid Caliphate. Chapter three deals with Zangi's conflicts with the Latin States in the East. His wars against the Crusaders are discussed here as also are their dealings with the Atabegs of Damascus, followed by Zangi's endeavours to rule that city. An expedition led by the Byzantine Emperor, John II Comnenus, is described in chapter four. In this, his project for the capture of the Muslim towns In Syria is the chief topic as is also Zangi's reaction against the Byzantines. In chapter five, the Turcomans and Zangi's operations against them in Shahrazur, the Artuqids in Hisn Kayfa and Mardin and the Kurds in the north of Mosul are the main theme. The final and sixth chapter which deals with the revolt of Malik Farrukh-Shah, for whom Zangi acted as Atabeg, and the siege of Qal'at Ja'bar, ends with the murder of Zangi during this, his last operation.

He was an example of physician, master and intellectual of the period. Therefore, he was a character that did not only follow closely the transformations by which society was passing trough, but influenced his time by his medical and religious writings. It was brought together a diversified documentary corpus composed by: medical works written by Arnau de Vilanova, the official Aragon Crown correspondence, his testament (1305), the inventory (1312) of books and goods from his personal library and a contemporary culinary book. It is debated the process of construction of his authority as an intellectual, in the years dedicated to teaching at the Medicine Faculty in Montpelier, which granted him the professional appreciation and privileges, that allowed him to circulate around the Royal and Pontifical Court while exercising medicine. Besides offering a collection of a physician and a master, the inventory of his library allow us to identify the ancient and Arabian matrices of the Arnau de Vilanova dietetics: Hippocrates, Galen, Rhazes and Avicenna. Thus, Arnau de Vilanova composed the Regimen to the conservation of the king's health, seeking to adapt these auctoritates' knowledge with the individuality of his patient. On this writing the preventive and therapeutic precepts destined to heal the monarch's chronic diseases center itself on a diet, with orientations not only concerning the food that he could consume, but also how to prepare them. His other dietetic writing, the Regimen Castra Sequentium, connected with military preventive medicine, it's destined to the kings' and its army health, which, on 1309's summer, besieged the Muslim city of Almeria on the Aragonese crusade opposite to nazari kingdom of Granada.

Isabel of Castile and Fernando of Aragon, also known as the Catholic Monarchs, joined in marriage in the year 1469, unified the kingdoms and implemented reforms in the legal system and existing institutions, but Castile fit the central role of this new political unit. Given this reality, although the sovereign power was exercised by both monarchs, the common form, the basic elements of each kingdom - territories Fueros and Cortes - were kept. It can be inferred that, with that union, Isabel and Fernando developed a centralized project on concepts of law and Justice, with the fundamentals the Aristotelian-Thomistic principles, acting thus as judges and legislators, in order to strengthen the system legal and to apply and distribute Justice to inflows from their territories. Thus, both restored the political and social order and the reformed institutions of government and Justice in Castile, promoting the centralization of power. In this context, were highlighted the concepts of law and Justice prevailing at the time of the Catholic Kings, the way legislating and thought, as well as the legal system, in particular the Ordenanzas Reales de Castilla.

Pivovarnictví a sladovnictví jako zdroj obživy církevních a světských statků v období od svých počátků až do doby svého vrcholného rozkvětu před třicetiletou válkou Konventní pivovar Vyšší Brod / Brewing and malting as a source of livelihood of church and worldly possessions in the period from its inception until its peak of prosperity before the Thirty Years War Conventional brewery Vyšší Brod

Wernerová, Marie January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with brewing and malting as a way of livelihood of ecclesiastical and secular goods in the territory of the Czech kingdom. This work is also aimed at showing our traditional and national beverage as an important part of our culture and tradition. It wants to introduce beer not only as an alcoholic beverage, but mainly as a business article. Its production and trading with it has been a source of high income not only in the treasuries of cities and nobility, but also in the treasuries of the church. As an example of the Church Brewery, the Conventional Brewery was chosen in Vyšší Brod. The first chapter of the work attempts to show the history of beer brewing closer. The thesis does not aim to describe the history of beer production, but to focus on the first references to it and the production methods used from the oldest cultures, such as Mesopotamian, Babylonian or Egyptian, to our closest Slavonic culture. Another chapter tries to map the production of beer and the struggle for it on the territory of the Czech Crown in the period of its rise, prosperity and mild decline in the middle of the seventeenth century. The last chapter is focused on the Conventional Brewery in Vyšší Brod, which was chosen as a characteristic example for the selected theme and above all as a monument...
