This paper presents a contextual analysis of Joseph Wright of Derby's “scientific series” which contains three paintings with science motifs. The purpose of the essay is to analyze how the contemporary context has been expressed in the paintings with regard to the relationship between religion and science. This is done with a theoretical starting point in the concepts of nomos and anomy. Together this starting point and method create a basis for a broader understanding of these three paintings with a focus on religion and science. My conclusion is that these three paintings express the tense relationship between religion and science that was current in England during the 18th century (and is still found today), and that each painting provides information about the changes that arose in the nomos in correlation to the progress of science. Much research has been made on these three paintings separately, studying these paintings together, however, opens up for many new interpretations.

Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka arkitekturens estetik, konstnärlighet och funktionsmässighet i en samisk kontext och vilka symboliska värden som ryms inom vald arkitektur. Uppsatsen undersöker med utgångspunkt i tävlingsbidragen på vilka sätt förslagen kommunicerar estetiskt, funktionellt, socialt och kulturellt med betraktare och brukare. Frågeställningarna i undersökningen är på vilka sätt tävlingsbidragen kommunicerar en samisk estetik, funktionalitet och symbolik och hur tävlingsprogrammets riktlinjer om samiska element efterlevs. Det teoretiska ramverket för uppsatsen är diskursanalys där materialet undersöks med en komparativ metod i dialog med tidigare forskning. Tävlingsbidragens projektbeskrivningar formal- och kontextanalyseras och jämförs med innehållet i tävlingsprogram, juryutlåtande och personintervjuer. Resultaten visar att utvalda förslag trots avvikelser från riktlinjer i tävlingsprogrammet kommunicerar statlig representativitet och symboliskt värde för samer. Slutsatser är att en tradition av monumentala byggnadsverk saknas inom den samiska kulturen och tävlingsbidragens konstnärlighet och funktionsmässighet i någon mån blir begränsad. Det vinnande förslaget kommunicerar inte traditionell samisk byggnadskonst i vissa delar. Landskapet spelar en väsentlig roll för placeringen av byggnaden och en omlokalisering till ytterligare en annan geografisk ort har viss relevans. Christie's and Sotheby's auction houses have adapted their way of working to a digitally progressive and globally expanding market, where the Internet, during the past two decades, has become an increasingly integral part of almost every aspect of current western culture.  This thesis examines and demonstrates how, and why, the two auction houses have adapted their work to be published through their digital and physical channels.  This thesis also examines and analyzes how Christie’s and Sotheby’s have customized their way of presenting their auction lots to potential costumers, and how they use technological innovations to visualize materiality.  Intermediate presentations of four auction lots, available through Christie's and Sotheby's Instagram accounts, websites and physical auction catalogs, are the main focus of this thesis.  The historical and contextual information, on an increasingly technologically innovative and digitally focused art and auction market, together with predominantly Roland Barthe’s semiotic theoretical framework regarding picture’s denoted and connoted messages, are being analyzed with Anne D’Alleva’s formal and contextual methodology for pictorial analysis.
