The meaning of activity amongst women participating in a craft group in South Africa / Betydelsen av aktivitet hos kvinnor som deltar i en hantverksgrupp i Sydafrika

Engström, Niklas, Näsholm, Hanna January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this study was to describe the meaning of activity amongst women participating in a craft group in South Africa. A qualitative method was used to answer the aim of the study. Ten African women who live in townships outside Pretoria have been interviewed. The interviews were conducted with support by an interview guide containing semi-structured questions. All collected data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed with a qualitative content analysis, which resulted in two main categories each containing two sub-categories; 1) “Internal Values” containing “Taking part in a social activity” and “Gaining self – esteem through activity”, and 2) “External Values” containing “productivity” and “leisure”. The categories within the Internal values contain descriptions from the participants that concern the meaning inside the person when participating in craft activities. The categories within External values contain descriptions that concern factors outside the person that have a meaning to the participants. This study showed that craft was of great importance for the participants in different areas, such as social network and personal development. The meaning of craft in Occupational Therapy needs to be further investigated and it would be interesting to conduct a similar study in Sweden.

The Hellenic School of Ottawa and Cultural Maintenance: The Perceptions of the Administrators

Zoupa, Sofia January 2016 (has links)
In multicultural societies like Canada where cultural diversity always exist, ethnic groups strive to preserve their cultural heritage and not become assimilated by the mainstream culture. Today, ethnic groups such as the Hellenic Community of Ottawa seek innovative means to sustain cultural elements such as ethnic language, religious beliefs, and social, cultural and leisure pursuits. This phenomenological study presents the perspectives of recent administrators of the Hellenic School of Ottawa toward language and cultural maintenance. The results of this study indicate that the Hellenic School of Ottawa is vital and effective for maintaining the Hellenic culture and language beyond the 3rd and 4th generation, as it includes the instruction of Greek language and familiarization with Greek culture. The results also indicate that students of the language school: (1) Are provided with an opportunity to learn Greek which may not be received at home, (2) learn to appreciate their ethnic heritage through language oriented leisure activities, (3) make friendships with those of same ethnic cultural heritage, (4) learn to have a deeper appreciation of multiculturalism and its place in Canadian society, and (5) develop confidence to speak their ethnic language. This study also provides suggestions for the enhancement of the operation of the HSO, such as addition of more Greek-content leisure activities, organization of trips to Greece, and expansion of the instructional time.

Atividade física como opção de lazer: uma análise acerca de jovens participantes do programa \"SESC Verão\" / Physical activity as a leisure option: an analysis of the young participants of the \"SESC Verão\" program

Alipio Rodrigues Pines Junior 14 March 2016 (has links)
Tais elementos dão ao programa um potencial transformador da realidade dos jovens, mostrando diferentes práticas de atividade física que possam ser incorporadas em seu cotidiano / Young Brazilians are going through an unprecedented situation: more than half the population of this age group is overweight. This was due to several factors, such as non prioritization of physical activity owing to other interests, such as work or study. It was noted that several initiatives have been taken to combat this alarming situation. Among them, there are programs that aim to promote physical activity in leisure time of these young people. But is that such programs contribute to the incorporation of physical activity as a leisure option in the daily lives of young people? With this problem in mind, this paper has as its themes physical activity and leisure and as its object the young participants of the SESC Verão program. Its aims are to study the interest of young people between 12 and 18 years for physical activity as a leisure option and to verify the influence of SESC Verão in stimulating the physical activity practice of young people. As theoretical categories were established the relations between some youth characteristics and leisure, physical-sporting interest of leisure and its interface with the young people and the leisure equipments and the Social Service of Commerce (SESC). As methodological procedures, were adopted two moments. At first it was made a bibliographic review based on the topics covered in theoretical categories. In second it was adopted a qualitative research with the application of semi-structured interviews, during January, among young participants of the 2016 SESC Verão edition, in Belenzinho and Itaquera units, and managers linked to this programs organization. Each edition of the program has a central theme, which is organized by cycles, and the current goes from 2012 to 2016. This edition had the theme What is the sport that move you?, presenting the Olympic sports and disseminating and enhancing the Paralympic modalities, in the year that Brazil will host an edition of both games. The sample was unrepresentative, chosen by convenience, with the number of interviews defined by data saturation. By analyzing the interviews, confronted with the information obtained through the bibliographic survey, it can be said that young people have an interest in physical activity as a leisure option, though it is not a priority, and its practice is aimed at amusement and casualness. The SESC Verão program has several attributes that make it attractive to young people, among them, the programming, the infrastructure and the instructors in the activities, which make them prefer to practice physical activity at SESC. These elements give the program a transformative potential of the young peoples reality, showing them different physical activities that can be incorporated into their daily lives

Assali, Lina, Kaze, Clarisse January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of our study was to investigate how leisure educators at two different leisure homes work with inclusion and exclusion in the indoor environment. In order to answer the purpose, the study was based on the following questions: How do leisure educators work with inclusion and exclusion? What opportunities and obstacles do leisure educators see in their work on inclusion and exclusion? How do children include and exclude each other in the leisure home? What significance does the environment have for inclusion and exclusion in the leisure home? The empirical study is conducted at two different leisure centers where interviews and observations have been used as a method. Two educated leisure educators were interviewed to find out how they view inclusion and exclusion and how they work on this. The analysis has been done from a socio-cultural perspective. The study found that inclusion is about belonging, security and community in which all students are involved. The educators explained how important it is to see all students and create a good climate in the group where everyone can be heard and seen. The study found various reasons that lead to exclusion that it may depend on hierarchy in the children's group. Exclusion can also occur in the game where some students do not belong to a community or are involved. Obstacles that have been highlighted by leisure educators to achieve an inclusive way of working are staff shortages, time, local design, large groups of children and that they need access to more tools. The result shows that the educators work inclusively by, among other things, taking advantage of the students' interest and needs in planning to make the students want to participate in the activities. The results also show that there are educators who believe that exclusion is complex. There are varying views on the concept of exclusion.

Freizeitaktivitäten von Kindern und Jugendlichen

Pröpster, geb. Auhuber, Lea Maria 08 January 2021 (has links)
The objective of the present study was to give a detailed overview on the leisure behavior of adolescents (frequency, differences between gender, age groups and social class, time trends, and inter-relations). In total, 1449 10- to 18-year-old German adolescents were included in the study. Participants answered questionnaires about their media use, physical activity, outdoor time, engagement in choir/orchestra and theater/dancing, social life and socio-economic status (SES). The results revealed that girls, children with lower SES as well as older children reported to use screen-based media more often and that girls, older children and children with lower SES were less physically active. In addition, boys and children with lower SES engaged less frequently in choir/orchestra and theater/dancing, while children with higher SES met their friends more often. The time trend analysis showed that mobile phone use increased drastically from 2011 to 2017, while engagement in choir/orchestra and theater/dancing decreased. Regarding the inter-relation between leisure activities, high screen times were significantly associated with less physical activity and less outdoor time. Physical activity, in contrast, was significantly related to better social life and more outdoor time. These findings highlight the growing importance of electronic media in adolescents’ lives and their tendency to displace other leisure activities.

Participation in leisure activities for children with a developmental coordination disorder : A systematic literature review

Keinan, Rugia January 2022 (has links)
Background: Participating in leisure activities is one positive aspect that promotes a sense of belonging and a social support network, which are beneficial for better health and well-being. Despite this, children with physical disabilities participate less in leisure activities, including children with Developmental Coordination Disorders (DCD). Given that children with DCD suffer from difficulties with bodily function, it is inevitable that they do not participate as much as typically developing children in the activity. However, there is limited literature about how this affects the everyday life of children with DCD. Aim: This systematic literature review aims to identify factors that affect the participation and self-perceptions of children with developmental coordination disorder in leisure activities. Method: A literature search was conducted by searching three different databases (CINHAL, MEDLINE, and ProQuest) which identified 83 peer-reviewed articles using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria from which ten was included in analysis. Results: Children with DCD participate less in leisure activities, becoming less physically active and social. They are also more excluded than typically developing children from certain leisure activities due to limitations related to their motor skills and have a negative view regarding their senses of self in relation to them not participating in leisure activities. Conclusion: Not participating in leisure activities harms children with DCD's sense of self and everyday life. Children with DCD are excluded from participating in leisure activities, and this exclusion takes place on different levels. Not participating in leisure activities results in social isolation and exclusion.
