The study described in this dissertation has investigated the representations, here understood as discursive constructions, of bilingual parents of intercultural marriages to describe and understand the ways in which these couples' representations shape their disposition to transmit their Immigrant Spouse's Mother Tongue (ISMT) within the family setting. It is a qualitative study which conducts an interpretative analysis of the participants' representation of family bilingualism, their own cultural and linguistic identities and that of their spouse's. The theory which supports this study was generated mainly in the field of Applied Linguistics, in an interface with Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Language Policies and Cultural Studies. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews aiming to delineate the participants' profile utilizing a life story approach. The participants in this study were 7 bilingual parents (4 immigrants and 3 Brazilian citizens) living in Brazil at the time of the interviews, who were or had been married to speakers of a mother tongue other than their own. The study aimed to identify among other factors a) the (spouses' themselves, their children's, relatives', friends', etc.) representations of the languages and cultures at play within the family; b) the status of the languages within the family; c) the spouses' multilingual and multicultural background; d) the social-historical context at the time of immigration and e) the relationships of power between the couple as influential in the (non)transmission of the Immigrant Spouse's Mother Tongue to their children within the family setting. It must be highlighted, however, that none of these factors alone can be regarded as conclusive to the language policy adopted within the family as such policies can only be explained when considered the interrelation among those factors. The study intends to offer subsidies on family language policies that promote the transmission of the immigrant parents' language, i.e., the minority language within the family, to their children / Mestrado / Multiculturalismo, Plurilinguismo e Educação Bilingue / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

Previous issue date: 2017-12-13 / The theme discussed in this study is directly related to the question of the identity of the
Portuguese language and consequently the cultural identification since it takes into account
extralinguistic characteristics that motivate the use of commercial names considered to be
creative and stylized. The main objective is to analyze the formation of commercial names,
observing the neologisms of all kinds, including foreignisms and loans from the linguistic point
of view linked to the cultural aspect. In view of the importance of the name of an establishment
in the commercial context. The hypotheses presented in this study claims that the process of
creation/formation of commercial names, as well as the cultural relevance and identities of these
names for the inhabitants of the city, through the understanding that the name is an instrument
of the definition of identity and is often through neologisms, loans and foreignisms.
Furthermore, in the commercial context, naming a product or space with words of a language
that is thought to be known by many people, and that conveys the idea of prestige is a way of
speaking and negotiating efficiently, providing investments in creative advertising, especially
in other languages that convey the idea of a globalized world. For this analysis, first, the names
of ten clothing stores and nine salons were collected in Palmas, the capital of the State of
Tocantins and in Catalão, a city in rural Goiás, with the intention of comparing the formations
of the names and explaining them, after the interviews with the owners of the businesses , which
was another important step in the collection information for analysis of training and possible
motivations for the use of these names by the busniness owners, as well as demonstrating the
type of morphosyntactic structure of these names and their spelling. The studies are based on
authors who discuss the changes observed in the Portuguese language lexicon such as Alves
(1990), Bechara (1996), Carvalho (2009), Correia and Barcellos Almeida (2012), Bizzocchi
(2013), and by those who deal with identity Bauman (2005) and Hall (2005), as well as Cabral
and Viegas (2007) with their essays on the importance of name. In conclusion, the choices
show the concern with the formation of a commercial name in order to attract the attention of
the public and, in the search to differentiate their business, use names with stylized writing, in
an attempt to bring some unusual element to the writing. There is also the use of resources that
break the rules of official spelling, often imitating the writing of the English language when
naming their establishments, whether influenced by products or services they offer, and in
making such choices are revealing aspects that motivate the contemporary subject, that is, the
need to respond to a global connection that shows, at the same time, something different to the
people, the easiness of hybridity in relation to the new and the different.

Previous issue date: 2010-11-30 / The objective of the present work is to verify how publicity uses sociocultural aspects of the
German language as a means of persuasion and/or identification between the advertiser and
the prospective consumer regarding the advertised product. In order to do so, we chose to
carry out a research based on the theoretical and methodological presuppositions of
sociolinguistics, of an ethnographical nature. The corpus of the research comprises six
advertisements, interviews with German descendants and texts composed by 5th-grade
students. Regarding the advertisements, we chose four from the car manufacturer Volkswagen
(Golf G4, É Nóis, Rigorosos e Contrário), and two from Casa Leonhardt, one in the city of
Marechal Cândido Rondon and the other in the city of Palotina. After a previous analysis of
the advertisements, which revealed sociolinguistic traces of the German language, they were
presented to the informer, so that they could show their reception and evaluation of the
advertisements. The informers were selected in the city of Marechal Cândido Rondon, in
which descendants of German immigrants settled, and in the district of Santa Rita D Oeste
Terra Roxa, which, besides presenting a considerable number of German speakers, is where
the Casa Leonardt head office is located. In the interviews, beside the advertisements,
questions regarding identity, beliefs and attitudes, and preservation of the German language
and culture, were discussed, as well as the public policies needed for this preservation and,
eventually, the teaching of Portuguese and German. The last subject of the corpus was related
to the analysis of texts composed by students, in which they reveal the linguistic transferences
from German to Portuguese. This analysis had in mind a teaching proposal in this context of
language contact. Among other results, obtained through interviews, we found out that most
informants approve the use of the German language in commercial advertisements. They also
acknowledge that this kind of language attracts the attention of the public more efficiently
than the traditional monolingual advertisements, thus acting as a means to persuade the
potential buyer.
5ª Série do Ensino Fundamental.

Stereotypes of British Accents in Movies : A Speech Analysis of Character Types in Movies with British AccentsBerglund, Hanna January 2017 (has links)
This essay deals with the use of linguistic stereotypes in three different movies with British accents, namely Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, with a main focus on phonology. It investigates whether attitudes towards British accents found in studies about ideological beliefs about accent variation are reflected in the selected movies and discusses the notion of linguistic identity. The essay analyses how studies of perceived prestige and attractiveness of accents correlates to the character types males, females, main heroes, villains, comic relief and mentors in the selected movies. The essay finds a correlation between Received Pronunciation and every character type. It also finds that accents rated high on the discussed lists most often correlate to the character types mentor, villain and hero, while accents lower down on the list correlates with the character types comic relief and villains. The use of accents in these movies is probably intentional and not coincidental.

The Linguistic Positionings of the French Immersion Speaker: A Post-Secondary ContextDurepos, Jessica January 2016 (has links)
A focal concern amid Canadian French immersion students upon completion of their secondary school studies is a shared belief and feeling that they are limited in their ability to communicate with francophone communities (Howard, 2007; Schaffer, 2013; The Globe and Mail, Friesen, 2013). Furthermore, it has been widely discussed that French immersion students are finding themselves in the midst of language identity crisis, unable to find a place among either of the dominant monolingual groups (Roy, 2010). This case study examined the potential persistence of language identity crisis in three French immersion students who extended their French as a second language education by pursuing post-secondary education in a French immersion program at a large bilingual university. The study reveals the linguistic identity construction of these students by clarifying how each participant positioned (Davies & Harré, 1990) herself towards Francophone language and culture. It exposes the factors which influenced the linguistic positioning of the participants and comments on patterns in the factors which affected their linguistic identity in particular.

Ownership of Englishas a multi-linguafranca : Linguistic identity and innovation in online multilingual practiceKalev, Jaana January 2021 (has links)
In recent years, some of the research within the field of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) seems to have gone through a re-orientation, shifting focus from form to practice. This has highlighted the dynamic nature of languages and identities performed in interaction, leading to the conceptualization of ‘English as a multi-lingua franca’, which refers to placing emphasis on multilingualism in ELF interactions. While much of ELF research has favored in-person spoken interaction, the increasing presence of electronically mediated intercultural communication (EMIC) in society encourages a consideration of online communication as a setting for ELF usage. Online interactions veer between written and spoken communication, thus providing many ways for speakers to express their linguistic identities and show ownership of the language produced. As such, in this paper a temporary multilingual social configuration was observed with regards to participants’ linguistic behavior. Six participants were asked to engage in discussion throughout one week in an online group chat, with the aim of acquiring further insight into how linguistic identity is performed in relation to language ownership and linguistic innovation by ELF speakers within the context of an online environment. The EMIC data was supported by individual interviews that took place prior to the group discussion, and follow-up interviews after the chat had ended. Through a qualitative thematic analysis, the research questions were discussed in relation to the three main focal issues of the study, i.e., linguistic identity, language ownership and linguistic innovation. The findings are in line with recent research that indicate that ELF is a multilingual practice that is shaped by its speakers, as well as the specific context of the interaction.

Exercising linguistic citizenship through Coloured narrativesVan Niekerk, Lauren January 2022 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This project explores the negotiation of shifting racial identities within a transforming post-Apartheid context, in particular, the negotiation of what it means to be ‘coloured’. Twenty-seven years into South Africa’s democracy, the power and influence that race and language hold over many South Africans’ are still prominent within this country. Because race is historically intersected with language and social class, language is used as an instrument of racialization. Therefore, this project seeks to understand how coloured racial and linguistic identities, which are steeped in complexity and ambiguity, are navigated by participants. It will focus, in particular, on how participants engage with Afrikaans and Kaaps to navigate these complexities and signal alignments and ambivalences. Additionally, this research aims to explore the potential of multilingualism to be a dynamic factor in the inclusive transformation of historical positions. Its central aim is to contribute to the notion of Linguistic Citizenship (Stroud, 2001, 2015, 2018, 2021) by capturing how linguistic encounters and interactions can go beyond the defined subjectivities of race and ethnicity, and how people use language to challenge and subvert historical and more contemporary identities. The data draws on focus group discussions with UWC students and the narratives produced within these spaces. It will draw on contemporary scholarship in Sociolinguistics, Discourse and Narrative Analysis and Linguistic Citizenship to explore how participants perform acts of Linguistic Citizenship to showcase their agency and voice as language and narratives become a site where identity juxtapositions are laid bare, and participants and their (racial and linguistic) identities are reimagined.

“Un Paso Atrás, Dos Adelante” (One Step Back, Two Steps Forward): Reporting the Experiences of Spanish-Speaking Latin Americans in Canadian WorkplacesMerchán Tamayo, Jully Paola 18 February 2022 (has links)
The linguistic landscape of Canadian workplaces is becoming more diverse as organizations employ individuals who come from various countries and speak different native languages. As language is an important marker of identity and group membership, language-based identities are powerful in shaping workplace experiences. Guided by both the ethnolinguistic identity theory (ELIT: Giles et al., 1977; Giles & Johnson, 1987) and communication accommodation theory (CAT: e.g., Dragojevic et al., 2016; Gallois et al., 2005; Giles & Ogay, 2006), this study explores the experiences of Spanish-speaking Latin Americans working in the Canadian National Capital Region in relation to their linguistic identities, coping strategies, and intergroup interactions. A thematic analysis of 24 semi-structured interviews shows that participants experience a dynamic shift in their identity in which they move between feelings of self-doubt and a sense of confidence and comfort in their workplaces. This shift occurs as they navigate the cognitive and emotional experiences of working in a nonnative language. Factors that influence this identity shift include social comparisons, positive implications associated with their native linguistic identity, negative evaluations, and empathy in the workplace. This study also provides a detailed description of the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and interactional coping strategies that participants enact to navigate their workplaces. In terms of intergroup interactions, the participant’s experiences, their evaluations, and reactions to accommodative or nonaccommodative behaviours from native speaking peers in their workplaces are explored. The final pages of this study include some recommendations for human resource practitioners.

As well as the identity categorization – that we refer to by the concept of linguistic identity – of French foreign language teachers has always represented a problematic issue in the field of language appropriation, the notion of social representation is currently becoming a major theoretical challenge in this field. This research presents an experimental study that focuses on social representation regarding the linguistic identity of the teacher and its effect(s) on learners’ interactional behavior in a French foreign language class located in Bahrain. The purpose of this research is first to study the interactional behavior of learners via classroom observation and by adopting conversational analysis methods, and secondly to study the role of social representations in language practice of French foreign language learners. For this purpose, we have carried out a thematic content analysis of epilinguistic discourses that have been collected via a semi-structured interview to determine if linguistic identity differences led to interactional behavior changes. This thesis aims at proposing an empirical approach that does not rely only on the analysis of epilinguistic discourse but also takes into account language practice and thus compares what’s said and what’s done

Previous issue date: 2006-11-07 / This paper, based on the research line of History and Description of Portuguese, implies
an exploratory investigation, whichg object of study is circumscribed to the Brazilian
Portuguese vocabulary of the XVI century. It is claimed that idiomaticity is inscribed in
the transformation of the archaic-Provençal Portuguese that, transported to the Brazilian
lands with the colonists who moved bringing it, was cultivated as it was in the soil of the
new colony. In this process of cultivation, resulting the cultural adaptation of the white,
the native and the negro people, that vocabulary would have been renovated to be
accustomed to the context of another territory; in such a manner it would incorporate
new semias and, thus, supply the lack of an authentic Portuguese archaic-Provençal
vocabulary. However, those new semias are still unsatisfactory, and it would be
necessary to incorporate to its lexical field words of native and African origins, because
of the new geography, fauna and flora. From this sememic changing process and
incorporations new/other lexicalizations will appear, contrasting with the Brazilian
Portuguese itself, through the edification of new architectures, which sup port is the
same linguistic system: the one that qualifies the processes of codification of the world
knowledge, formalized by the Portuguese language. The distinction between structure
and architecture granted the differentiation between language from idiom a starting
point adopted to examine the idiomatization of the archaic-Provençal Portuguese,
being its parameter the processes of lexicalization and to consider both Brazilian
Portuguese and Portugal s, as well as the one of the other nations as idioms produced
by differentiated cultural languages which lived together - and still live in different
geographical spaces and that, nowadays, typify distinct territories that became National
States. Those different languages which had made those territories bilingual let
themselves to be inscribed in the vocabulary system of those idioms, in order to grant
them with visions of world that, although distinct, present similarities in terms of form
which frame the field of their respective vocabularies. Guided by a general objective to
try to explain the permanencies by dislocation models concerned to the structure and
organization of this idiomatization process the investigative way is traced by two
focuses. One that configures historiographical characteristic of the constitution of the
idiom in the land of the parrots ; other that concerns to the images of the linguistic
studies that favour the lexicon as instancy capable of pointing out similarity through the
differences among models of organization and representation of world knowledge
formalized by a unique linguistic system. From the results obtained, by means of
analytical procedures oriented by the study of the discursive -semantic fields, the result is
an archaic Provençal Portuguese which was implanted in Brazil which becomes an
idiom and the official language of a transmuted colony in National State at the XIX
century. Such idiomatization presents differences not significant in the grammatical
area and not allowing to considerate the existence of different languages. In the lexical
area, this process of idiomatization , which implies the construction of differentiated
points of view through which knowledge of world are organized, framed and formalized
by language categories, may qualify Brazilian idiom differently from that of Portugal / Esta Dissertação, situada na linha de pesquisa História e Descrição da Língua
e, assim suprir a falta do próprio vocabulário do português arcaico provençal. Contudo,
