[en] TU OR VOCÊ?: A MATTER OF CULTURAL IDENTITY / [pt] TU OU VOCÊ?: UMA QUESTÃO DE IDENTIDADE CULTURAL.

JANE CRISTINA DUARTE DOS SANTOS 17 October 2003 (has links)
[en] The general aim of this thesis is to describe the use of pronouns/forms of address in Portuguese as a Second Language. The specific aim is to identify the contexts which influence the choice of use by the learners, therefore to analise the construction of their linguistic identity. This thesis directs itself to the pronouns/forms of address TU vs VOCÊ and the building of a Portuguese- speaking identity: how do students of Portuguese acquire the skill in using these pronouns both in a Portuguese immersion situation, at PUC-Rio Portuguese courses and an English immersion situation, at Brown University`s Portuguese language courses? An ethnographic research was done with tape recording of Portuguese classes. The data were collected through interviews with some Professors and American students, oral activities, books, pedagogical materials and classroom observation. As result, we found a constant use of the pronoun você. This pronoun used with titles like diretor, doutor, professor can represent closeness or distance during the social relationship among American students, while they are speaking Portuguese. The linguistic identity is built on their cultural identities as well as other more as specific factors may be personal characteristics, interaction between foreign and Brazilian people among others.

Lima Barreto: língua, identidade e cidadania / Lima Barreto: language, identity and citizenship

Lúcia Maria de Assis 10 April 2008 (has links)
The aim of this work is to analyze the linguistic-discourse occurrence of the language, linguistic identity and citizenship presented at Lima Barretos work, literate that lived in Rio de Janeiro by the years 1881 and 1922. Especially it examines the meaning of the militant literature of the author, his criticism to the linguistic purist and its occurrence in the journalistic and fiction chronicles. To do it, we based on the theoretical presumption of the History of the Linguistic Ideas which says that the study of a language is linked to the relevant subjects of the history and the constitution of a specific society trying to comprehend the social imaginary that is built along its history, in order to identify the linguistic-culture of a people. That is possible because a literary production is always linked to a time and, therefore, it shows its anxieties and dreams, changing into a relate of a specific social-historical contact. In this sense, the analysis of Lima Barretos work helps to acquire knowledge about the history of the Portuguese language in Brazil.

This dissertation aims to analyze the constitution of ethnic and linguistic identities of a group of Polish descendants who live in a rural community in the countryside of the State of Paraná, Brazil. In the study, we identified some literacy events which occur in Polish, both at school and out of it, aiming at verifying how these events contribute to identity construction, and the vitality of the Polish language in that community. This research is theoretically based on identity construction (HALL, 2005; GEE, 2000), literacy practices (STREET, 1984), as well as on the vitality of minority languages (TERBORG; GARCÍA LANDA, 2011). The nature of the research is qualitative-interpretative with an ethnographic perspective, based on the ethnography of language (GARCEZ e SCHULZ, 2015), and the instruments for data generation are audiovisual recordings made of Polish language classes and questionnaires answered by learners, the teacher, and the school pedagogue. Semi structured interviews were also conducted with people in the community, as well as notes in a field journal and audio recordings of the interviews. Besides, several documents were analyzed, as the ones from CELEM (Centro de Línguas Estrangeiras Modernas – Center for Modern Foreign Languages), referring to the school´s implementation of the Polish language; the official registration book, which contains the community´s parishional documents, and at the Museum, where the historical documents connected to the Polish culture were studied, which subsidized the development of this research. The results show that religious tradition is one of the identitary aspects which are more rooted and present in the community to this day. However, some literacy events which happened at the local church, and maintained the vitality of that language, unfortunately are no longer held. The only literacy event which is still kept in church, in Polish, is the recital of the rosary before dominical masses. In the familiar scope, the Polish language is frequently used, it is a Brazilian Polish, mixed with the Portuguese language (code-switching). For this reason, some expressions like “broken Polish”, “Brazilian Polish”, or “countryside Polish” are expressions used by the participants to refer to the Polish language they speak; it often indicates low self-esteem regarding themselves and others. As to the ethnic-linguistic identity, this alternates between Brazilian and Polish identities, depending on their interlocutors and the circumstances surrounding them. Finally, the results show that, in general, the women (“doers” and “invisible”) in Santa Faustina take on several roles, especially in the house and the church, but they are not empowered amidst the community.

Diversité des langues et politiques linguistiques en Iran / Diversity of languages and language policies in Iran

Madanchi, Shahzad 25 September 2015 (has links)
Contemporary Iran has a population of 78 million inhabitants who speak a variety of languages; its official and majority language Persian co-exists with many languages which are more or less used in different situations and count a variable number of speakers. The linguistic diversity of the country is the bedrock of the cultural identity and of the various traditions of the speakers of these many languages; it has made it necessary to define a linguistic policy to define both the role and thepromotion of the official language and the rights of all linguistic minorities. This dissertation is based upon an ethno-sociolinguistic methodology and focuses on the case of Iran, notably on Iranian languages, cultural identity, the status of linguistic minorities. It resorts to the various theories and scholarly interpretations of linguistic politics to analyze and question this context within the frame of linguistic planning and the decision making process of officials who developlinguistic policies in Iran. Thus our study is based upon the three stages of linguistic planning, that is the definition of the corpus, status and acquisition, it aims at highlighting the significance of the work of the Persian Language andLiterature Academy in the planning of linguistic interventions in the country. Il also highlights the sociolinguistic status of minorities in Iran thanks to fieldwork surveys. The analysis of the policies that have been implemented as well asthe results of surveys point out that the measures or their implementations are insufficient. This has therefore led to some linguistic demands connected with the geopolitical situation of the country.

Stereotypes of English in Hollywood Movies : A Case Study of the Use of Different Varieties of English in Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings and Transformers.

Andersson, Niklas January 2010 (has links)
This essay deals with the use of linguistic stereotypes in Hollywood movies. It investigates whether attitudes towards English dialects found in studies on perceptual dialectology are reflected in the selected movies and discusses the notion of linguistic identity and how standard and nonstandard speech, respectively, are used symbolically to emphasize features of characters in eleven movies from three different movie series, namely The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Transformers, with a main focus on syntactic and phonological dimensions. The essay finds a correlation between standard speech and features of competence and wisdom, and nonstandard speech and features of solidarity, sociability and traits of stupidity and humor. Moreover, very specific perceptions of certain varieties of English are probably utilized as amplifiers of equally specific characteristics of some characters. The use of dialects and accents in these movies is probably intentional and not coincidental.

Les particularités fonctionnelles et structurales des actes de parole russes des Allemands ethniques dans l'espace sociolinguistique de l'Allemagne / Functional and Structural Features of Russian Speech of Ethnic Germans in the sociolinguistic space in Germany.

Nedopekina, Ekaterina Mikhaïlovna 07 July 2015 (has links)
The thesis Functional and Structural Features of Russian Speech of Ethnic Germans in the Sociolinguistic Space in Germany aims to provide a detailed description of a sociolinguistic space determined by the presence of Russian immigrants of German ancestry in today's United Germany. The object of the research is the spoken and written varieties issued from spontaneous utterances of Russian speech in the Russian speaking community of said Germans in present day Northern Germany, particularly in the district of Schleswig-Holstein. The purpose of the current thesis is to identify and to classify the most important and regular traits of the spoken Russian of ethnic Germans with respect to phonetics, lexis and morphology under the conditions of permanent influence exercised by the German language and culture and finally, to reveal different types of Russian language varieties in this context in connection with the non-institutional communicative situations of Russian and German bilingualism. The answers obtained within the inquiry conducted in Germany in the form of questionnaires distributed to 80 Russian speaking ethnic Germans and during spontaneous interviews as well as with the help of data gathered from the Russian and German Internet-sites in 2008-2009, formed the empirical basis of the research. The chosen methodology is descriptive: interviews, questionnaires and the statistical treatment of data, with the inclusion of contextual and semantic analysis. By conducting this piece of research, it highlighted that the functioning of the Russian language within the limits of its historical distribution and under the conditions of its permanent contact with German language, has led to the creation of a particular sociolinguistic space which is specified by its ethnic heterogeneity. The consequence being, this space cannot be defined as a diaspora. Nevertheless, it possesses a significant variety of highly distinctive features and its solidarity is assured by the Russian language which contributes to the formation of a specific linguistic identity.

Msanjila, Yohana P. January 2011 (has links)
This paper discusses the problems caused by the linguistic features used by speakers as the basis of determining their social identity. The concept of identity is broad and closely related with socio-cultural and eco-spheres environment of the speakers. The speaker’s identity is determined by employing both social and linguistic features in the overall analysis. The linguistic features include the whole range of language use, from phonetic features to lexical units, syntactic structures and family names. This paper therefore argues that the speaker’s linguistic features pose some problems in determining the speaker’s identity. The first problem concerns the concepts of language and dialect which are defined differently by different scholars. The second problem refers to multilingual speakers with diversified linguistic competence, and lastly, it has been noted with concern that some speakers use artificial family names which are not from their ethnic origin, hence complicating the process of determining the identity of the speakers.

Lundvall, Erika January 2023 (has links)
Young people without extensive knowledge of the family languages risk experiencing alienation and identity crises. This study focuses on two young people and their relationship to the family languages through life story interviews. The participants rate their own language skills low and share how it has affected their upbringing and identity. With the help of narrative theory and Bourdieu’s theoretical framework, the participants’ life stories are analyzed based on capital, habitus and general features of the narrative. The study shows that the two participants have thematic experiences in common, among other things the fear of saying the wrong thing, the support of family members, having a linguistic responsibility and a view on their language skills as lacking have been consistent in both life stories. However, the details of the individual stories have had different effects on the attitudes towards language and identity the participants have today.
