Its theme is the Linguistic Identity of the Brazilian People, registered in the literary discourse of the Nineteenth Century, through lexical uses. It relies on the theoretical presuppositions of the French Discourse Analysis, which main representative is Pêcheux. Accordingly, the notions of language, culture and ideology are circumscribed by the analytical categories of Discourse, Society, History and Ideology, within a multi- and cross-disciplinary focus. Methodological presuppositions are retaken Official-History readings by Freire (2002), and Ribeiro (2005), and Non-Official-History from different period., and criteria are the point of view of the reader-researcher. At this process, literary texts are qualified as historical resources of National Liguistic Identity, and to register it, stereotyped or crystallized models of usual language are re-created. The hypothesis, that guides the study is that, if the man is a human being that transforms, raises and maintains, his owns ways of act and interact through language are supported by changes that involves stays; reason, the transmutations, in languages fields, hauls matrixes from the past. This period represents social-political-cultural transition, in which Brazil passes from Colony to Modern-State and rises a new/Man. The corpus reviewed is composed of selected texts of O Mulato (1881) by Aluísio Azevedo. The methodological procedure adopted has to scan the discourse formation in search of lexical uses of the Portuguese language to legitimate them as responsable of the Brazilian Linguistic Identity. The results obtained point out that the hypothesis is suitable and that the goals were achieved, namely: overall goal: 1. to contribute to the knowing of the real Brazilian Linguistic Identity, by the lexical uses in the literary discourse, accorded in/by interdiscursivity with Official-History Discours; 2. to remodel by historiography, the Brazilian marcs present in the literary discourse; and, to present, by literary discourse, the linguistics models that are favorable to the Brazilian Linguistic Identity formation / Esta Tese está centrada na área da Análise do Discurso francesa (AD) e na linha de pesquisa História e Descrição da Língua Portuguesa do Programa de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Língua Portuguesa da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. Tem por tema a Identidade Lingüística do povo brasileiro inscrita no discurso literário do século XIX, por meio de usos lexicais. Fundamentada em pressupostos teóricos da AD, tem em Pêcheux seu maior representante. Noções de língua, cultura e nação estão circunscritas nas categorias analíticas Discurso, Sociedade, História e Ideologia, com visão multi e transdisciplinar. Nesse processo, qualificam-se os textos literários como fonte historiográfica da Identidade Lingüística Nacional e, para registrá-la, são recriados os modelos esteriotipados ou cristalizados da língua usual. A hipótese, que orienta o estudo realizado, é a de que, se o indivíduo é um ser que transforma, cultiva ou conserva, suas formas de agir e interagir na/pela linguagem são sustentadas por mudanças que implicam permanências; razão pelas quais, as transmutações, no campo da linguagem, arrastam consigo as matrizes do passado. Esse período representa transição sócio-políticocultural, em que o Brasil passa de Colônia a Estado-Moderno e dele emerge um novo/Homem. O corpus analisado é composto por fragmentos da obra O Mulato (1881) de Aluísio Azevedo. Por procedimento metodológico, percorreram-se as formações discursivas, em busca do uso lexical da língua portuguesa, para caracterizá-la como traço legitimador da Identidade Lingüística do Brasil. Os resultados obtidos indicam que a hipótese foi adequada e, que os objetivos foram atingidos, sendo estes: geral − contribuir para o reconhecimento da Identidade Lingüística do Brasileiro; específicos: 1. examinar a Identidade Lingüística, pelos usos lexicais presentes no discurso literário, concebido na/pela interdiscursividade com o discurso da História-Oficial; 2. reconstruir pela historiografia, as marcas de brasilidade presentes no discurso da História-Oficial; e, 3. apresentar, pelo discurso literário, os modelos lingüísticos que propiciam a formação da Identidade Lingüística do Brasileiro

This dissertation analyzes how the concept of the ideal citizen is shaped linguistically and visually in Macedonian textbooks and how this concept changes over time and in concert with changes in society. It is concerned with how schools construct linguistic norms in association with the construction of citizenship. The linguistic practices represented in textbooks depict “good language” and thus index also “good citizen.” Textbooks function as part of the broader sets of resources and practices with which education sets out to make citizens and thus they have an important role in shaping young people’s knowledge and feelings about the nation and nation-state, as well as language ideologies and practices. By analyzing the “ideal” citizen represented in a textbook we can begin to discern the goals of the government and society. To this end, I conduct a diachronic analysis of the Macedonian language used in elementary readers at several points from 1945 to 2000 using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. I catalogue and chart the frequency of certain linguistic forms and changes in their usage over time and contextualize these choices and changes within the greater changes of the narratives in the books. I conduct a similar analysis of the visual depictions of identity in these textbooks and the content of the textbooks with respect to notions of identity, nationalism, and other cultural factors.

Language choices of English L1 learners in a Western Cape high school

Thesis (MPhil (General Linguistics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / This research focuses on the language repertoire, patterns of language use and language preferences of learners from Afrikaans homes, who are registered in the English first language classes in a particular Western Cape High School. Out interest is in how a profile of the linguistic resources of such learners and the context in which their linguistic identity develops may contribute to a perceived process of language shift in the bilingual/multilingual community where they learn and live. SCHOOL A is multi-racial and multi-lingual, with a large component of "coloured" learners living in a nearby predominantly-Afrikaans community. The thesis investigates the linguistic preferences and patterns of language choice and language use of the selected group of learners across various domains, notably at home, with relatives, at school, with peers and in their religious communities. Data from various sources is presented and discussed in detail to illustrate the variety of language skills of English L1 learners between the ages of 15 and 17 in Grades 10 and 11. This will give an impression of how multilingual a given section of the local high school population is. The profile tests whether home language or academic language has a greater influence on the later language choice of learners whose parents use Afrikaans as home language and who have English as LOLT, meaning that these learners possibly possess considerable skills in at least two languages. The data was collected by means of limited access to school records, questionnaires filled out by learners, interviews with a number of learners and a couple of parents of such learners. This gives a very good impression of which languages learners know, which they used most, which they prefer where the choice is between English/Afrikaans bilingualism, English only, Afrikaans only, or codemixed Afrikaans/English). The thesis reports on the linguistic repertoire and preferences, and also on reasons given by learners and parents for their selection of one or more of the various community languages in the different domains. Consideration is given to the possible accommodation of these learners as first language users of English which is largely a second language in the community, by other community members and institutions such as school and church. The critical interest of this thesis is to determine the nature and extent of perceived language shift in this selected community of learners at a particular Western Cape high school, and to consider whether such a shift is indicative of a more extensive process of marginalization of Afrikaans in a community that historically had a strong Afrikaans identity.

Marchezan / Resumo: Esta tese tem como principal objetivo identificar as adaptações fonético-fonológicas realizadas por falantes brasileiros ao pronunciarem antropônimos estrangeiros, sobretudo os provenientes da língua inglesa. Argumenta-se que a temática discutida vincula-se diretamente com a definição de "identidade fonológica" do português. O estudo abrange questões de ordem linguística e extralinguística, o que permite dois olhares sobre o tema. O primeiro, de caráter sócio-histórico, retoma reflexões anteriores a respeito dos antropônimos e sua relevância para diferentes povos e culturas desde a antiguidade. Abordam-se, por este viés, aspectos de cunho discursivo que permeiam o processo de designação de pessoas. A segunda perspectiva, de caráter linguístico-estrutural, constitui o cerne desta investigação científica, que se desenvolve, essencialmente, à luz dos modelos fonológicos nãolineares. The topic discussed is straightly linked to the determination of a phonological identity of Portuguese. The study focuses on linguistic and extralinguistic aspects, which allow two different views on the subject. The first, based on social-historical grounds, retakes previous reflections on anthroponyms and their relevance to different people and cultures since ancient times. Under this perspective, the survey deals with discursive issues related to the act of naming people. The second view, based on structural linguistic grounds, is the main focus of the study, which is essentially conducted in the light of non-linear phonological models. By means of phonological contrastive analysis, similarities and differences are highlighted concerning the source language, American English (AE) and the target language, Brazilian Portuguese (BP). The corpus comprises anthroponyms typical of the English language as well as proper names whose spelling refer to this idiom. The names selection was based on attendance sheets from State Schools in the city of São Luís, MA. Pratiques langagières et rapports aux identités linguistiques chez les enseignants et les élèves du Haouz : cas des lycées d'Aït Ourir (Maroc) / Language practices and relations with linguistic identities of teachers and students in high schools of Ait Ourir, Haouz, Morocco

Cette recherche a pour objet l’étude de la manifestation des langues au niveau du répertoire linguistique et au niveau du répertoire identitaire dans un milieu plurilingue, à savoir les lycées d’Aït Ourir au Maroc. Au niveau de la pratique, l’analyse des conversations a dévoilé que l’alternance codique est une pratique courante chez les enseignants et les élèves et que le poids de chaque langue dépend de son utilité. Au niveau identitaire, l’identité plurilingue est dominante et le poids de chaque langue correspond à celui de la biographie linguistique de nos enquêtés. Le rapport entre le répertoire linguistique et le répertoire identitaire est disproportionnel. En effet, la comparaison synchronique a dévoilé que les langues de notre étude n’ont pas le même poids aux deux niveaux. D'une part, les tours monolingues sont dominants par contre l’identité monolingue est faible. D'autre part, les tours mixtes n’ont pas de poids tandis que l’identité plurilingue est prépondérante. En outre, la comparaison diachronique a permis de déduire que le changement est continu au niveau de la pratique alors qu’il tend à être stable au niveau identitaire de l’adolescence à l’âge adulte. Ce qui indique que l’identification en une langue ne dépend pas de sa pratique. / This research aims at studying the different aspects of language use at the levels of linguistic and identity repertoires in a multilingual environment; namely high schools in Aït Ourir, Haouz Province, Morocco. The analysis of conversations in the daily usage of languages revealed that Code Switching is a common practice among teachers as well as pupils; and that the weight of each language used depends more on its usefulness to the purpose of speaking. At the identity level, multilingual identity is dominant and the weight of each language is dependent up on the linguistic biography of the person surveyed. Thus, the relationship between the linguistic and identity repertoires is disproportionate. Indeed, synchronically comparing the languages in study confirmed that they don’t have the same weight at the two levels. The monolingual turn-taking is dominating whereas the monolingual identity is weak. On the other hand, the mixed turn-taking is meaningless whilst multilingual identity is significant. Moreover, the diachronic comparison enabled us to deduce that the change is ongoing in practice while it seems steady from adolescence to adulthood which shows that identifying in a language doesn’t depend on its practice.

Framtiden för meänkieli : Språklig identitet hos tornedalska elever i årskurs 4 / The future for meänkieli : Linguistic identity of Swedish Tornedalian pupils in grade 4

Denna studie utgår från ett sociokulturellt perspektiv i sin undersökning om tornedalska elevers språkliga identitet och relation till meänkieli. Studien utfördes genom triangulering som bestod av visuella språkliga porträtt, gruppintervjuer och fältanteckningar i tre fjärdeklasser i två olika tornedalska skolor. Metoden visuella språkliga porträtt, även kallad språkporträtt, är en unik metod som inte använts i tidigare svensk forskning om minoritetsspråk. Den kreativa process som arbetet med språkporträtt innebär för eleverna hjälper eleverna att utveckla sina tankar om språk och identitet. Tillsammans med gruppintervjuer och fältanteckningar ger denna studie ett slutresultat med hög reliabilitet och validitet. I studien synliggörs även vilka luckor det finns kring beskrivningen av tornedalingarnas historia. Resultatet av denna studie sammanfattar att meänkieli fortsättningsvis är en betydelsefull del av tornedalska elevers språkliga identitet. Åtta av 20 elever vill lära sig mer meänkieli då språket är en essentiell del av elevernas kultur och identitet. Detta är ett viktigt resultat för att ge ny glöd och motivering till att revitaliserings-arbetet av meänkieli ska fortgå. Vidare visar resultatet av denna studie att dialekter har en stor betydelse för elevers språkliga identitet. Eleverna beskriver sitt muntliga språkbruk i form av olika svenska dialekter. Tornedalska elever är inte representerade i aktuell forskning och denna studie bidrar med en viktig röst till samtalet om hur språk, kultur och identitet är faktorer som inte går att skilja åt. På så vis innebär en framtid för meänkieli även en framtid för den tornedalska kulturen och identiteten. / This study is based on a socio-cultural perspective and aims to examine Swedish Tornedalian pupils´ linguistic identity and relationship to meänkieli. The study was performed by triangulation which consisted of visual linguistic portraits, group interviews and field notes in three classes in fourth year in two different schools in Swedish Tornedalen. The method visual linguistic portraits, also called language portraits in this study, is a unique method that has not been used in previous Swedish research about minority languages. The creative process of working with the language portraits helps pupils develop their thoughts about language and identity. Together with group interviews and field notes, this study has a high reliability and validity. In this study it also becomes clear what historical gaps that exist around the description of Swedish Tornedalen. A summary of the study still shows that meänkieli is a very important part of Swedish Tornedalian pupils’ linguistic identity. Eight out of 20 pupils want to learn more meänkieli because pupils describe the language as an essential part of their culture and identity. This is an important result to give the revitalization of meänkieli more energy and motivation. Furthermore, the results of this study show that dialects are of great importance for pupils´ linguistic identity. The pupils describe their oral language in form of different Swedish dialects. Tornedalian pupils are not represented in current research and this study contributes with an important voice to the conversation about how language, culture and identity are factors that cannot be distinguished. In this way, a future for meänkieli also means a future for the culture and identity of Tornedalen in Sweden. / Tämän tutkimusten tarkoitus on selvittää ruottin toornionlaakson koulukläppiteen kielellinen itenttiteetti ja suhe meänkieleen. Tutkimuksen teoria perustuu sosiokyltturinen näkökulma ja tehtiin triangulerinkiin kautta jota sisältää visyallinen kielellinen potretti, joukkointerjyyvit ja panna kirjoihin. Tutkimuksessa on mukana kolme eri luokkia kaksi eri meänmaan koulusta. Metuuti visyallinen kielellinen potretti myös sanottu kielipotretti, ei ole ennen nähty ruottin riikin tutkimuksissa minuriteettikielissä. Koulukläppiteen kreativi työskentely kielipotrettiten kanssa auttaa ne käsittäämään niien ajatukset kielestä ja itenttiteettistä. Tutkimuksen lopputulos on vahva reliabiliteetti ja validiteetti triangulerinkiin kautta. Tutkimukssessa selvästi tulle näkön mikkä putteet meänmaan histoorialinen muistelussa on. Lopputulos tästä tutkimuksesta on että meänkieli jatkuvasti on kolon tärkeä osa ruottin toornionlaakson koulukläppiten kielellinen itenttiteettiä. Kaheksan koulukläppiä kaksikymmenestä halvaavat oppia enemmän meänkieltä. Meänkieli on niien mielestä tärkeä osaa kylttuuristä ja itentitettistä. Nämät tulokset ovat tärkeitä revitaliserings teko meänkielelle. Eespäin lopputulos näyttä että dialektit ovat iso osa kielellisestä itenttittettistä. It Feels Like Home : Linguistic repertoire and language identity among elder Tornedalians in Uppsala

Based on the accounts by four elder speakers of the Swedish minority language Meänkieli, given in October 2020, this study investigates the attitudes and sentiments among elder speakers of Meänkieli towards the languages they speak. The participants have migrated as young adults from the Torne Valley, where Meänkieli is traditionally spoken, to places in Sweden where their language use has been restricted by the lack of Meänkieli domains. The testimonies have been collected via semi-structured interviews and analysed through thematic analysis, taking perspectives from theories on language ideology, linguistic identity and linguistic biography, revealing how the participants' linguistic personas and repertoires have taken form throughout their lives, alongside their life experiences.  The results show that the participants highly value their multilingualism, and that their language use is a deliberate as well as subconscious tool for expression and affirmation of identity and belonging. It is also shown that the languages often are associated with discrete chronological and geographical parts of the participants' lives. Furthermore, have the participants not passed Meänkieli on to their children, due to the lack of parental strategies and learner motivation, showcasing the importance of linguistic context and child agency in language acquisition. Future research would benefit from inclusion of a wider spectrum of social class, and from testimonies of the children of migrated Meänkieli speakers to complement the parental perspective, in order to further investigate the factors behind language shift outside of a minority language's domains. / Baserat på berättelserna från fyra äldre talare av det svenska minoritetsspråket meänkieli, givna i intervjuer i oktober 2020, undersöker denna studie äldre meänkieli-talares attityder och känslor gentemot de språk de talar. Som unga vuxna har studiens deltagare flyttat från Tornedalen, där meänkieli traditionellt talas, till platser i Sverige där användandet av meänkieli begränsats av förlusten av språkdomäner. Berättelserna är inhämtade genom semi-strukturerade intervjuer, och är analyserade med hjälp av tematisk analys med perspektiv hämtade från språkideologier, språklig identitet och språklig biografi, för att påvisa hur deltagarnas språkliga personor och repertoarer har formats under deras liv och genom deras upplevelser. Resultaten visar att deltagarna sätter stort värde på sin flerspråkighet, och att de både medvetet och undermedvetet använder språken för att uttrycka och befästa språklig identitet och tillhörighet. Vidare visas hur språken ofta associeras med väldefinierade kronologiska och geografiska delar av deltagarnas liv. Deltagarna har inte fört meänkieli vidare till sina barn med anledning av brist på strategier från föräldrarna och barnens motivation att lära, vilket belyser relevansen av den språkliga omgivningen och barnets delaktighet i språkinlärningen. För att ytterligare förstå drivkrafterna bakom språkskiften utanför ett minoritetsspråks domäner skulle framtida undersökningar gynnas av att ett bredare spektrum av sociala klasser inkluderas, och av att barn till utflyttade meänkielitalare får komplettera sina föräldrars perspektiv med sina egna skildringar.

ABSTRACT Spain currently has, within the range of geographical areas and autonomous communities, five official languages: Galician (Galicia), Basque, Basque (Bilbao), Catalan (Barcelona), Valencian (Valencia) and Spanish which enjoy official prestige. Thus, Castilian, a language derived from the area of Castile, acquired its prolonged development from Asturias. This last pure language without a mixture of Mozarabic invasion, cultivated and developed since the Reconquista in Covadonga (a place located in the Picos de Europa, located to the north in the Asturian and Cantabrian area), made Pelayo king in 718 B.C. This last language, Spanish, is the main official language of all of Spain. The main purpose of this sociolinguistic research is to openly expose facsimiles and barriers that have arisen over time, which have been the object of obstacles, thus preventing the official status of the Asturian language. Which has been one of the oldest languages concerning other bordering areas of autonomous communities. History shows a current generation represented by older adults and peasants by profession, who still maintain oral speech discourses of ”Bable” (the Asturian language) that are still alive. This generation of adults will be responsible for leaving their oral and written legacy of the Asturian language to their preceding generations. At the end of the research, the objective is to point out the importance of the official status of the Asturian language which allows and is a clear identity of the local citizenship, that is, the Asturians. In other words, the Asturians currently represent the legacy of the area, including its Asturian language, and those who enjoy freedom of expression and civil and moralright, thus protecting the languages, in the different autonomous communities of the Spain today.
