Interpretações: autobiografia de uma pesquisa sobre letramento literário em língua inglesa / Interpretations: autobiography of a research on literary literacy in English

Roberto Bezerra da Silva 07 February 2012 (has links)
This qualitative study gathers data from the researcher/professors own pedagogical practices to build up a discussion about teaching literatures in English in the context of teacher education undergraduate courses from the theoretical standpoint of the new literacies studies. It embodies the methodological principles of autoethnography through which the analysis of social practices intermingles with an autobiographic approach. It narrates and analyzes two pedagogical events which focus on the collaborative interpretation of literary texts in English: a) the practice of teaching through face-to-face collaborative interpretation; b) the development of virtual spaces and the formation of an online interpretive community devoted to meaning making. The theoretical discussion that takes place alongside the description of such events concentrates on the conceptualization of criticism/critique and the placement of such notions within the academic field of literacies studies, a current which highlights the social and ideological dimensions of pedagogical practices besides framing its objectives around the idea of citizenship education towards democracy as a response to contemporary challenges for building social spaces that may welcome living across differences and nurture ethical responsibility. Upon assessing the pedagogical potential of collaborative interpretive practices, virtual or otherwise, this study finds real possibilities for the development of critical thinking. In the examples analyzed herein some of those possibilities came true.

Letramentos e atividades on-line em Ambiente Virtual de Aprendizagem / Literacies and online activities in Virtual Learning Environment

Samuel de Carvalho Lima 25 November 2009 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze the relations between literacies and online activities present in Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The implementation of this proposal was based on reflections about the literacies submitted by Shetzer and Warschauer (2000), Soares (2002), Xavier (2005), AraÃjo (2007), Fischer (2007) and Ribeiro (2008). Located in the qualitative paradigm, with predominantly descriptive marks, our analysis suggested the categorization of online activities present in the courses LÃngua Inglesa II â A: CompreensÃo e ProduÃÃo Oral e Leitura e ProduÃÃo de Textos AcadÃmicos updated at VLE Solar, from Universidade Federal do CearÃ, and the description of literacy practices in virtual environments mediated, potentially, by the guidelines of the online activities proposed. The parameters considered for the analysis came from the summarization of Shetzer and Warschauerâs theoretical elaboration (2000), which lead us to the following dimensions of digital literacy: communication, construction and research. The data prompted the formation of an online activity typology, based on the literacy types demanded by them, namely: online activities strange to the potential of the web; online activities mediating the familiarization of the potential of the web; online activities mediating literacies for communication; and online activities mediating literacies for construction and research. The results of this analysis allowed the description of the literacy practices that are currently being privileged in this context, linking the type of online activity to the literacy practices that are potentially mediated by them and to the dimensions of digital literacy, according to Shetzer and Warschauer (2000). It follows that there is a need for technological formation for the language professional, because this way there will be the offering of online activities that addresses to the most diverse, or even countless, literacy practices in virtual environments.

This work consists in a qualitative research of cultural-historical approach, based on the enuciative linguage theory by Mikhail Bakhtin and the social construction of knowledge theory, by Lev Vygotsky. It seeks to understand how the practices of digital literacy are presented and worked in pedagogy courses and degree in the Federal University from Juiz de Fora by the teachers with future teachers in training. It presents a review of the literature, establishing a dialogue with what has already been researched on digital literacy in Brazil. Three thematic groups were formed: 1) Digital Literacy: one theme and many definitions; 2) Some necessary skills: reading (comprehension) and writing (production) in cyberspace; 3) Digital literacy and educational practices. In relation to methodological process, initially have a brief history about the use of the computer and internet in teacher training courses at FACED-UFJF. Then the pilot project which orient the field work through the application of questionnaires, aiming, in addition to the selection of the subjects of research, know the social practices of reading and writing on the computer and on the internet developed by teachers, and how they perceive these contributions to pedagogical practice instruments and for the training of future teachers. It discusses, the field work that accompanied six teachers from Pedagogy courses and degrees, using as methodological tools, dialogical individual interviews and observations in their classrooms. Finally are indicated the three categories of analysis that debates, respectively, the training of teachers in Brazil, the curriculum of FACED-UFJF and the presence of the computer and internet; the university teacher and his paper teaching the trainig teachers how to use the digital technologies; practices of digital literacies as possibility of a formative experience for students to the use the computer and the internet. Data analysis allowed to understand that the use of digital technologies in the course of pedagogy in the FACED-UFJF is still at an early stage, not reaching full operation and articulated with the training of teachers; there are positions favourable to its use, however, there are still signs of resistance; Finally, much of the work from the computer and the internet is based on the Web 1.0.

This Project presents results of the research: “Construction of Geographic Knowledge on a Language Perspective: an analysis of the Geography Curriculum Proposal of Juiz de Fora City Hall”, developed in the Graduate Project in Education of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. Searches what the language practices are, shown in the Geography document of Juiz de Fora City Hall in a perspective of multiliteracies of the scientific literacy and textual genres. The purposes are to analyze how the textual genres are discussed in the Geographic Curriculum Proposal of Juiz de Fora City Hall (2012), describe the literacy practices and the methodological proposals, suggested on the document, and measure the literacy role, overall of the textual genres, in the process of the geographic knowledge construction. Understanding that there are multiple of literacies, and considering that the language runs through the knowledge construction of the school, we realize that an interdisciplinary project, whose main axis are the textual genres and supported by approaches that emphasize the social character of language, can contribute to the students‟ language skills development, in an attempt of expanding their knowledge. As theoretical assumptions, we support them in the Sociodiscursive Interacionism of Bronckart (2003, 2006, 2009, 2010), in the theories of textual genres of Dolz and Schneuwly (2004), in Literacy Theories on social practices of Soares (2004, 2013) and Street (2010, 2012, 2014) and in the perspective of Multiliteracies of Rojo (2009, 2012, 2013). For this, we use a documental research as a project method. The data analyzed states that the activities of reading, writing and speaking skills, suggested in the proposal, enable the development of language practices, covering varied genres, as a basis for the Geography knowledge, contributing to the extension process of the students‟ language capacities.

A case study exploring the “new literacies” during a fifth-grade electronic reading workshop

Larson, Eva Lotta Cecilia January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Curriculum and Instruction Programs / Marjorie R. Hancock / In today’s classrooms, literacy instruction is undergoing tremendous transformations as new technologies demand new literacies. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine how integration of technology supports the emergence of new literacies, within the context of an electronic reading workshop in a fifth-grade classroom. The electronic reading workshop provided students multiple opportunities to response to e-books, both as readers and technology users. First, e-book tools allowed the participants to engage in a spontaneous response process as the plot unfolded. Second, students responded to teacher-constructed prompts in electronic literature response journals. Analysis of the journals revealed responses from three broad categories: 1) personal meaning making, 2) character and plot involvement, and 3) literary criticism. Third, students engaged in conversational response while participating in asynchronous message board discussions. The students composed and posted their own response prompts. Analysis of the message board transcripts suggested five types of student-constructed prompts: 1) experiential prompts, 2) aesthetic prompts 3) cognitive prompts, 4) interpretive prompts, and 5) clarification prompts. Virtual guide response projects provided a fourth opportunity for response to e-books. Working in groups, students created virtual guides to the literature in which they visually represented their personal interpretations of the e-books. The virtual guides were published as multi-modal PowerPoint presentations including sounds, images, animations, and hyperlinks. As students conceptualized, researched, published and presented their virtual guides to the literature, they used new literacies to fully exploit the potential of the available technologies. The electronic reading workshop provided a learning environment in which students interacted with each other as they made sense of and accessed the available information and communication technologies. In particular, socially constructed learning occurred through threaded discussions on an electronic message board and development of virtual guide response projects. Educators must be responsive to today’s learners. This study illuminated the expanded possibilities for integrating technology and literacy within the context of an electronic reading workshop. Findings of the study suggest technology integration supports the emergence of new literacies, while the new literacies support students’ utilization of available technologies.

An exploration of the link between selected women’s discourses and literacy resources in the working class township settlement of Wesbank, South Africa

Slemming, Fatima January 2010 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / South Africa became a globally recognised democratic country in need of a development agenda after its first democratic elections were held in 1994. Democratising South Africa, however, requires rigorous attempts to open up spaces for and by the previously silenced and marginalised segments of society to become active and participatory citizens. Within the framework of New Literacy Studies and a “sociolinguistics of mobility” (Blommaert 2010), this study explored the link between selected discourses and literacy resources used by three groups of Coloured women in the working class township of Wesbank in Cape Town, South Africa. The study was framed as ethnographic, qualitative research and Appraisal Theory (a branch of Systemic Functional Linguistics) was applied to analyse the identified discourses. Based on the research findings, I also identified what literacy resources these women used for the purposes of empowering one another and the broader space of Wesbank. In addition, I proceeded to label several “transportable literacies” that my research participants from this hybrid community – where everyone “…is a migrant from elsewhere” (Dyers 2008) - appeared to be sharing in order to co-create the spaces which they use in Wesbank.

BUILDING THE NEW BABEL OF TRANSNATIONAL LITERACIES: PREPARING EDUCATION FOR WORLD CITIZENS

Wang, Xiaobo 08 August 2017 (has links)
The transnational diasporas in a technological world that is postmodern and posthuman mean both exciting diverse communities and challenging problems. On the one hand, globalization brought human beings the convenience of exchanging ideas, doing business, and building a better world together. On the other hand, the political economy of nation states that shaped non-translational ideologies, created at the same time conflicts and misunderstandings among citizens from different parts of the world. Responding to the current transnational clashes in flow (information dissemination) and contra flow (surveillance and control of information flow) of our information age, this dissertation builds up a transnational rhetoric and communication model that can be used to examine the curriculum design, teaching materials, and pedagogy in communication and writing studies, especially in technical communication. In addition, this study investigates the present state of curriculum design, teaching materials, and pedagogies in a southeastern higher education institution. Empirical data was collected from students, instructors, and administrators from different departments of this institution to determine whether and how do curriculum design, teaching materials, and pedagogies frame and teach transnational literacy. Further, to engage the conversation with a national audience, major introductory technical communication textbooks were analyzed based on both the empirical data and the transnational rhetoric and communication model using content analysis. The findings indicate that although curriculum design, textbooks, and pedagogies have transnational components, they generally reply on traditional models and stereotypical examples that cannot meet with students’ needs in order for them to become genuine world citizens with transnational awareness and competence. The transnational rhetoric and communication model helps to fill the gaps in curriculum design, textbook revision, and pedagogies in cultivating world citizens.

The teaching/learning of academic writing for prospective language teachers : from representations to practices

Vergara Luján, Omaïra 05 September 2016 (has links)
This research is framed within the field of language studies at it touches upon three interrelated sub areas, namely, academic writing, language teaching and foreign language teacher education. The object of study is the teaching of academic writing to foreign language teaching trainees. The study was developed in two methodological stages: An ethnographic stage and an action-research one. In the first stage, it is stated that proposals for the teaching of academic writing must be preceded by the recognition of participants’ (teachers and students) relationship to writing and their concurrent interpretations of writing and its practices. This set of phenomena constitutes systems of beliefs that generate conditions that might be favorable or unfavorable for the implementation of pedagogical actions. Hence the importance of exploring participants’ relationship to writing and using this knowledge to examine existing teaching practices. In the second stage, it is argued that teamwork is essential in order to transform the teaching of writing in university education. A first action research cycle managed to raise teachers' awareness on the centrality of teamwork on such endeavor and to engage them on improving the teaching of academic writing. It is expected that this research will allow us, in the short-term, to spring new action-research cycle that influence the development of academic writing skills in college.

Experiences of Multiple Literacies and Peace: A Rhizoanalysis of Becoming in Immigrant Language Classrooms

Waterhouse, Monica C. January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation uses Masny’s Multiple Literacies Theory (MLT) to problematize assumptions about literacy underpinning the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program. In addition to teaching English, LINC aims to orient adult immigrants to “the Canadian way of life” which I argue constitutes a form of peace education: teaching peaceful, multicultural values as part of being/becoming Canadian. How do language, literacies, and lessons about peace intersect? MLT foregrounds the Deleuzean-Guattarian concept of becoming: reading intensively and immanently disrupts and transforms individuals in unpredictable ways. I deploy Deleuze and Guattari’s war machine to think about peace as a text that is read and violence as a revolutionary, disruptive force essential for the invention of peace. Accordingly, this research focuses on how experiences of peace AND violence contribute to becoming (i.e. transformation) through reading, reading the world, and self in LINC. Over a 4 month period, 2 teachers and 4 students participated in qualitative inquiry strategies including: video-recorded classroom observations, individual interviews (based on the viewing of video footage of classroom events), and student audio journals. I also collected classroom artifacts used during the observations. Through Deleuze’s transcendental empiricism I frame my research approach as rhizoanalysis. Rhizoanalysis is a (non)method that views data as transgressive (exceeding representation), analysis as a process producing rhizomatic connections (immanence), and reporting as cartography (mapping different assemblages). This research affirms that there is more going on in LINC than its mandate implies and raises questions pointing to the complexities of teaching and learning English in LINC. How might lessons about multicultural values be taken up in ways fraught with tensions between peace AND violence? Becoming-Canadian is an event that unfolds through reading, reading the world, and self. As sense emerges, how might the collision of worldviews around experiences of peace AND violence create encounters that potentially disrupt? How are students, teachers, and even the concepts of “Canadian” and “peace” transformed? I posit rhizocurriculum as a way to account for the affective and transformative powers of multiple literacies in language learning and to view adult immigrant language classrooms as sites of experimentation.

Literacy on Lockdown: An Ethnographic Experience in English Assessment

Toomey, Nisha January 2011 (has links)
This research explores literacy as a medium for deepening student's awareness of their world and the impact of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Standardized testing is analyzed as a fundamental paradigm to our school culture. Ethnography is explored as a method for describing one group of students and their teacher as they prepare for the OSSLT. The findings conclude that the test occupies time, dominates definitions of literacy and undermines student and teacher agency. The conclusion considers reasons for why we seem to accept a testing paradigm that may be a direct affront to democratic practice in schools.
