Tras un siglo de recepción cervantina en Brasil: estudios críticos sobre el Quijote (1900-2000) / The study of the critical reception of the Cervantes\' work in Brazil from 1900 to 2000

Marta Pérez Rodríguez 07 March 2008 (has links)
Dom Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes enjoyed a generous reception in the Brazilian context that was manifested in various spoken and artistic forms. The present work confines itself to the study of the critical reception of the work in Brazil from 1900 to 2000. The commemorative dates related to the work and its author provided privileged moments for the production of essays and critical studies published in book form or as news articles. Taking this fact into account, the starting date for the research is 1905, when the third centenary of the publication of the first part of the work was commemorated in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The aim of the work is to analyze the way in which such studies set about translating the form and content of the work, sometimes through images, other times by the defense of certain values, establishing in some cases connections between the life of the author and the literary work. Apart from the analytical consideration of the 16 analyzed texts, the work seeks to establish connections between them by means of a comparative critical exercise with emphasis on symbolic representation. The research undertaken led to the organization of a bibliographical archive based on the journalistic resources consulted and registered, which enabled the formulation of the first catalog of Cervantes\'s works produced in the country. This catalog is intended to facilitate future consultations and new research into the reception of the work in Brazil.

Um assunto de silêncios: estudo sobre o \'Cara-de-bronze\' / Analysis and interpretation of the short story \"Cara-de-Bronze\" (\"Bronze Face\"), written by João Guimarães Rosa

Daniel Sampaio Augusto 24 April 2007 (has links)
Analysis and interpretation of the short story \"Cara-de-Bronze\" (\"Bronze Face\"), written by João Guimarães Rosa. This work synthesizes the idea the author has towards poetry, remarked by the long tradition of writings dedicated to the study of Saturn and of melancholy. The confront of such tradition, based on the reading by Walter Benjamin, with the short story, unveils enigmatic aspects of the narrative, and reveals essential elements of the author\'s conception of the world, important for literature, literary criticism and the philosophy of art.

This dissertation focuses on the production of the novelist, literary critic and historian of Brazilian literature Lucia Miguel Pereira by the dual perspective of literary theory and feminist criticism. The intersection of these two disciplines is needed to understand the apparent rift between the author‘s fictional work and literary criticism. Based on the observation that a preoccupation with the female condition in the first half of the twentieth century undeniably pervades the whole of her four novels, while her critical output reveals to be almost indifferent to the discredit of female authorship in the canon of Brazilian literature, seeks to investigate ways of increasing convergence between two seemingly contradictory aspects of this production. In a metacritique perspective, the work maps the author's thinking on the exercise of literary criticism and the fictional creation and sets her system and approach to the literature. The category of the novel as a literary genre of particular interest in Lucia‘s studies emerges as key to understand the unity of her work, insofar as it is understood as a field of experimentation on life. In the process, the research followed the intellectual maturation of Lucia Miguel Pereira towards the systematization of her theoretical formulations about the novel and review the place of this intellectual pioneer in the history of Brazilian literature and criticism.

This paper investigates both the poetic work and the critical-theoretical production of W. H. Auden (1907-1973) searching to unveil the nuances of the passage from modernity to postmodernity in the literary context. The way made by this Anglo-American poet throughout his 45 years (1928-1973) of production allows us to perceive and track changes in his lyric that is always linked to social and existential issues of his time. In order to follow Auden’s path between modernity and postmodernity, without neglecting the reflection about them, it was necessary to put side by side the theoric thoughts of the poet with those from other writers to talk about many issues, among which we highlight language, poetry, subject, society, history, literary criticism. These procedures allowed us to select a set of representative poems of real change in the ways that Auden conceives poetry, and its social and existential functions, these poems were analyzed pari passu with our theoretical considerations.

This doctoral dissertation tries to prove the hypothesis that Neoconcretism and Process Poetry, Brazilian artistic and poetic movements, introduced aesthetic concepts capable of justifying a critical approach to electronic poetry. This approach is based on identifying three fundamental common points between the aforementioned movements and electronic poems: the encounter between the verbal and visual signs in poetry, the physical body of the viewer as agent in aesthetic fruition and the reader´s participation in the creating poetic process. The theoretical research was carried out through the analysis of some Brazilian and Portuguese electronic poems. From this perspective, we attempted to investigate the relationships between the poetic experiences with electronic visual poems which represent the European avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century and the post-concretists movements in Brazil, more precisely Neoconcretism and and Process Poetry. The corpus is made up by some electronics poetic experiences created by Erthos Albino de Souza, Fernando Nabais, Giselle Beiguelman, and Rui Torres.

La réception de la littérature russe par la presse française sous la Monarchie de juillet (1830-1848) / The reception of Russian literature by the French press of July Monarchy (1830-1848)

Artioukh, Ekaterina 02 October 2010 (has links)
The present work suggests studying the reception of Russian literature in whole by the French press under the reign of Louis-Philippe. All political and cultural subject matter inherent in the process of familiarization and integration of so little known Russian literature develops in its complicated and accidental subtleties: relations between the two countries, Russian as a source language, translations, information networks, reflections of literary life. In apparently pacified Europe, in France there appears a new class of intellectuals that is interested in both « social matter » and literary works. Newspapers and reviews play an increasing role in cultural mediation and hold a power or a counter-power, which informs, judges and criticizes, and whose titles proclaim their aspirations well enough: L’Europe littéraire, Le Globe, Revue des Deux Mondes, Revue Indépendante and others. We can see that literary judgments are inseparable f! rom sociopolitical considerations. So the articles are followed from the existent category: a mixture of history, policy and literature. Writing about Russian literature during the 1830s-1840s, does it really mean to position yourselves towards Louis-Philippe and Nicholas the First ?

Aspekty genderu v románu Eva Carry van Bruggenové / Gender Aspects in the Novel Eva by Carry van Bruggen

Jankovská, Marie January 2016 (has links)
in English This thesis focuses on the construct of gender in the modernist novel Eva by the Dutch authoress Carry van Bruggen in relation to the individual human subject. The goal of this thesis is to analyse how is gender constructed in the book and how this construct influences the psychic development and decision making of the main character, a woman named Eva. The answer to the main research question What role does the construct of gender play in the life of the main character of the novel Eva? was reached with the help of the discourse analysis, namely the post-structuralist discourse analysis using the deconstructive reading. The thesis is at the same time theoretically anchored in the post-structuralist feminist literary criticism. The theoretical part therefore draws on the ideas of Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Judith Baxter and Judith Butler. As an inspiration for the discourse analysis itself served the discourse analysis dealing with the gender identity that was carried out by Kateřina Zábrodská in 2009. The first step in the analysis stage was to identify the relevant passages of the novel that inform what does it mean to be a man or a woman. The comments on these passages focus on the individual claims about gender, they formulate what kind of duties and limits these discourses...

Becoming Other: Virtual Realities in Contemporary Science Fiction

Franks, Jamie N 17 March 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to explore the boundary between human and other created by virtual worlds in contemporary science fiction novels. After a close reading of the three novels: Surface Detail, Existence, and Lady of Mazes, and the application of contemporary literary theories, the boundary presented itself and led to the discovery of where the human becomes other. The human becomes other when it becomes lost to the virtual world and no longer exists or interacts with material reality. Each of the primary texts exhibits both virtual reality and humanity in different ways, and each is explored to find where humanity falls apart. Overall, when these theories are applied to real life there is no real way to avoid the potential for fully immersive virtual worlds, but there are ways to avoid their alienating effects.

A Deconstruction of Elie Wiesel's The Time of the Uprooted

Carbonell, Cristina T. 21 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the implications of bearing witness as testimony, and the recuperation of community and identity in the wake of exile. Through a close reading of Elie Wiesel’s The Time of the Uprooted, alongside the theories of Jacques Derrida and Jean-Luc Nancy (among others), I argue that a True Testimony cannot exist, and yet despite this fact, there is a necessity to bear witness in the face of the Other. The realization suggests an imperative of a different order—one that steps back from the very notion of truth, to instead accept the impossibility of truth in any act of witnessing. By comparing Wiesel’s metaphysical framework to post-structural philosophies, I am able to blur the lines between an exile’s metaphysical feelings of isolation and strangeness from both others and themselves to the effects of recognizing and accepting that all language is différance.

Entre lírios e liras: a mitopoética utópica da Jurema Sagrada / Between lirios and liras: the utipian mythopoetics of Sacred Jurema

Silva , Analice da Conceição Leandro da 01 December 2017 (has links)
Informed by the Utopian and Literary Studies on Mythopoetic, I propose, with this work, the analysis of the lirios of Jurema, religious hymns of public domain that are part of the Brazilian religion Jurema. The corpus is composed of a sample of 100 lirios that I chose and categorized from a survey that involved bibliographic and audio visual sources, centralizing a significant number of poems for analysis. The construction of this study implied in the presentation of a panorama of the Jurema traditions and beliefs, pointing to understanding its lyrical production; and in an investigation of the work of criticism, from the beginning of Jurema studies until the present moment. Following, I present a more analytical perspective on the interpretation of the poems. I end my exploration of the theme by emphasizing the approximations between Jurema and utopia, which in my view are presented in three distinct levels: in the expression of mythopoetic discourse; in the representation of mythical spiritual places, wonderful paradises / secret places; and, finally, in the perpetuation of human being, through enchantment and its connections with Sebastianism. With this work, I aim to collaborate with the expansion of research in the area of critical studies of utopia in national texts and contribute to the critical fortune of Jurema’s poems, promoting the visibility of the mythopoetic of this rich religious and cultural manifestation.
