Machado com Flaubert ou a política da escrita / Machado with Flaubert or the politics of writing

Livia Cristina Gomes 27 June 2011 (has links)
Gustave Flaubert and Machado de Assis´s writings are studied here taking into consideration the irony as a narrative strategy common to both authors. The ironical procedure of their writings plays with verisimilitude, and this is made evident in the figure of speech of comparison and a continuous frustration of the reader´s expectation. By undoing the discursive similitude which activates the verisimilitude´s causality, according to Aristotle, the irony made effective by that figure of speech reveals a pastiche play and dislocates, in that sense, the semantic representation of the narrative. The mimesis´s corruption as substance of literary discourse makes their writings a proposal of another kind of verisimilitude, no longer motivated by the coincidence of the discursive similitude, which highlights its political act. The politics of writing is not in what the author meant, but in the text´s reverberation in the reader, which imposes a silence in the units of meaning already established by the repetition of the received ideas. It is also to be understood that the study here undertaken proposes an alternative criticism in order to tackle writings of different styles and practices, without necessarily having explicit or implicit quotations, influence and literary source. This is because the force of the literary writing is not exclusively in its semantic representation, but in the liberation of the symbolic, making the historicity of discourses evident.

Bibliotecas fantásticas em chamas: Machado de Assis e Gustave Flaubert / Fantastic libraries on fire: Machado de Assis and Gustave Flaubert

Luciana Antonini Schoeps 14 September 2012 (has links)
Having as a starting point the reading effect of Machado de Asiss and Gustave Flauberts self reflecting narratives which, due to the intense recourse to other discourses, seem to be books made of other books , the aim of this work is to study these writers interdiscursivity practices, as observed in their writing and reading practices through the concept of the fantastic library, in an explicit dialogue with Michel Foucaults theory. Following two main paths from which we would like to observe the literary work inside the library (the space of the writers real libraries as a privileged viewpoint of their enunciability) and the library in the work (that is, the image of the book and of elements of the literary system represented in the books), we noticed a tense relationship with these other discourses in these two writers practices, which is reinforced by the recourse to different narratological devices such as the fictional author in Machado and free indirect style in Flaubert. As our analysis progressed, we perceive that the fantastic library of those authors, construed between those paths already mentioned, revealed some of the problems related to their enunciability and legibility, as the interdiscursivity of these self reflecting narratives questions not only naturalized or imposed manners of reading and writing but literature itself.

Lendo e escrevendo sobre o pacto autobiográfico de Philippe Lejeune / Reading and writing on Philippe Lejeune\'s autobiographical pact

Ana Amelia Barros Coelho Pace 05 October 2012 (has links)
Philippe Lejeune, examining the autobiographical production in French, identified a constant feature in the readings he did, to which he named autobiographical pact. In one of his formulations, the autobiographical pact would be the manifestation of the personal engagement of the autobiographer through a textual construction (prologue, introductory note, preamble) or para-textual (title and subtitle, information on the inside cover and book flaps), allowing the reader to admit the text as an expression of the personality of the writer, in its true value. The theoretical construction has proved insufficient: from one text to another Lejeune reviews and re-discusses the pact, applying nuances, raising the ambiguities in which the genre is involved. In those attempts to get closer to the genre, he expresses himself in an autobiographical manner. With that, his text becomes an object of study in itself. With my research, I intend to make evident the relational character of the autobiographical pact, in the conjugation of acts of reading and writing. I start with my readings of his studies about the autobiographical genre, putting them in dialogue with his own trajectory as a researcher. Besides that, we are also interested in observing the readings Lejeune undertake around the Confessions by Rousseau, in parallel to the first theoretical texts. After that, consider the pacts cast in the studies of the diaries, made after the theorizations of the autobiographical pact. It is important to make evident the ways in which the pact is expressed in Lejeune\'s critical text itself. In that sense, I expect to articulate both the autobiographical and the critical dimensions in his texts.

Tolkien and Bakhtin: Chronotope, Existence, and Reality

Unknown Date (has links)
Space (topos) as one of the main categories in modem literary criticism helps to discover and study unique aspects of the narrative such as functioning of archetypes, reflection of historical reality in the text, and different types of artistic consciousness (mythological and "realistic"). This work is a first study of time and space in Tolkien's trilogy The Lord of the Rings with the help of the chronotope concept proposed by Mikhail Bakhtin. A critic and author of an original literary concept and one of the most prominent representatives of the school of Russian formalism, Mikhail Bakhtin was also a contemporary of J. R. R. Tolkien who can be ranked among the most significant experimenters in the field of modem literature. Using Bakhtin's classification of spatio-temporal relations in the novel, I was able to identify a type of chronotope in Tolkien's major narrative as one close to mythological and epical chronotopes. In terms of this postulate, I explored methods Tolkien used to create unique time and space of fantasy to make this experimental literary genre widely popular since the middle of the twentieth century onward. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2020. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Kritický ohlas tvorby českých autorek k tematice druhé světové války v 21. století / Critical acclaim of Czech female writers'21st century topical word on Second World War

Musilová, Anna January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis Critical acclaim of Czech female writers' topical work on the Second World War analyses book reviews of three chosen novels devoted to the theme of the Second World War, by Kateřina Tučková, Alena Mornštajnová and Květa Legátová. The aim of the thesis is to document how the works have been received by Czech literary critics and reviewers. The analysis examines texts from literary magazines (Tvar, Host, A2, Literární noviny, iLiteratura.cz), general press (Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES, Novinky.cz, Týden) and Czech Radio. The theoretical part defines literary criticism, and summarizes the biographies of chosen writers and the history of some of the important literary magazines that are analyzed in the thesis. In the theoretical part, I also put the role of female contemporary writers into perspective of their cultural and historical context. The following practical part is focused on interpreting novels and analyzing and evaluating critical response. The analysis not only examines the opinions and conclusions of reviewers, but also the quality of the authors' reflections, and the professionalism and complexity of their approach to the novels. The thesis also includes interviews with Kateřina Tučková and Alena Mornštajnová, in which the writers are questioned about their...

Paul Verlaine critique littéraire : aspects biographique, esthétique et discursif / Paul Verlaine as literary critic : biographical, esthetic and discourse aspects

Absalyamova, Elina 07 December 2012 (has links)
Verlaine’s experience allows to question the phenomenon of writer criticism. The rationale and the formal qualities of the daily critical output of a poet acceding to celebrity are studied after an overview of the phenomenon’s definitions (introduction). The triple biographical, esthetic and discourse analysis reveals the tight bond between critical production context, theories used and form given to critical texts. Verlaine’s marginal position in the literary field predetermines his distrust of institutionalization mechanisms and oftheories justifying them resulting in low conceptualization as well as in contradictory and discouraging handling of existing notions. The particularities of self-representation (provocation, weak ethos) equally result from his position in the literary field and go along with abandoning prescriptive theories in the name of tolerance. The emphasis moves from the conceptual sphere to the discourse accentuating affectivity, expressivity and irony which bring it closer to poetical creativity but not so as to become prose poetry. This criticism does not loose its pragmatic turn inherent to literary communication, its efficiency being reinforcedby certain features of idiolect (play upon sounds, metaphors, segmentation of phrases), freed of their poetical value in the new context.

Tělo pod dohledem. Tělesnost a sexualita v próze Krásné zelené oči. / Body under Supervision. Sexuality and Corporeality in Lovely green eyes novel.

Levy, Veronika January 2018 (has links)
The Diploma Thesis, Body under supervision. Corporeality and Sexuality in the novel Lovely green eyes, focuses on gender analysis of the literary work, which itself deals with gender relations and emphasizes a women's experience. The Lustig's novels setting is full of "feminine" themes and seems to be feminist at first glance. With a closer look you can find an intruder in the form of a "masculine" narrator, depicting the woman mainly as a body and a "thing to look at." The key concept of the thesis is a feminist literary criticism, using the resisting reader method by Judith Fetterley, that draws attention to the existence of a universal male perspective. As every text analysis is discours analysis as well, the other method I will apply will be the discours analysis method. For the analysis of narrator's point of view, I will apply Laura Mulvey's theory of voyeurism, to find out if the text does portray the female experience as erotic. Because of the strong textual interpellation, requiring readers to identify with the narrator's view, it is important to pay attention to the narrator's point of view and find the possibilities of refusing the interpellation of the text. As a starting point for the analysis of the female Holocaust experience, the thesis will focus on Gender aspects of the Holocaust...

Metaphors, Myths, and Archetypes: Equal Paradigmatic Functions in Human Cognition?

Kalpakidis, Charalabos 12 1900 (has links)
The overview of contributions to metaphor theory in Chapters 1 and 2, examined in reference to recent scholarship, suggests that the current theory of metaphor derives from long-standing traditions that regard metaphor as a crucial process of cognition. This overview calls to attention the necessity of a closer inspection of previous theories of metaphor. Chapter 3 takes initial steps in synthesizing views of domains of inquiry into cognitive processes of the human mind. It draws from cognitive models developed in linguistics and anthropology, taking into account hypotheses put forth by psychologists like Jung. It sets the stage for an analysis that intends to further understanding of how the East-West dichotomy guides, influences, and expresses cognitive processes. Although linguist George Lakoff denies the existence of a connection between metaphors, myths, and archetypes, Chapter 3 illustrates the possibility of a relationship among these phenomena. By synthesizing theoretical approaches, Chapter 3 initiates the development of a model suitable for the analysis of the East-West dichotomy as exercised in Chapter 4. As purely emergent from bodily experience, however, neither the concept of the East nor the concept of the West can be understood completely. There exist cultural experiences that may, depending on historical and social context, override bodily experience inclined to favor the East over the West because of the respective connotations of place of birth of the sun and place of death of the sun. This kind of overriding cultural meaning is based on the “typical, frequently recurring and widely shared interpretations of some object, abstract entity, or event evoked in people as a result of similar experiences. To call these meanings ‘cultural meanings' is to imply that a different interpretation is evoked in people with different characteristic experiences. As such, various interpretations of the East-West image-schema exist simultaneously in mutually exclusive or competing forms, as the analysis of Gatsby and the reversal of the values of East and West in the context of colonizing and counter-colonizing attitudes suggests.

Kritická reflexe románů Aleny Mornštajnové v českých médiích / Critical Reflexion of Alena Mornstajnova's Novels in the Czech Media

Sedloňová, Nikola January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis Critical Reflexion of Alena Mornstajnova's Novels in the Czech Media analyses book reviews of the first four novels written by Alena Mornštajnová: Slepá mapa, Hotýlek, Hana and Tiché roky. This thesis aims to document how her work has been perceived by professional literary critics and reviewers. The analysis examines 27 articles from Czech literary magazines, portals (Host, Tvar, A2, iLiteratura.cz, Bubínek Revolveru) and generally focused newspapers and magazines (Mladá fronta DNES, Právo, Deník N, Respekt, Týdeník Rozhlas, Literární noviny). The period of analysis for this study begins in 2013 when her first novel was published and covers all relevant material up to the present. In the theoretical part of this thesis, firstly the following terms are defined - interpretation, art valuation, critique, review and interview. Thereafter, the biography of Alena Mornštajnová is summarized. Finally, literary media, which published crucial critiques and reviews for the analysis, are introduced. The practical part of this thesis focuses on interpreting particular novels and an on analysis and evaluation of critical reflections. The analysis examines the opinions and conclusions of literary critics and reviewers, and also the standards and professionalism of their articles. Finally, in...
