Applications of functional composition for CMOS and emerging technologies / Aplicações da composição funcional para CMOS e tecnologias emergentes

Martins, Mayler Gama Alvarenga January 2015 (has links)
The advances in semiconductor industry over the last decades have been strongly based on continuous scaling down of dimensions in manufactured CMOS devices. The use of CMOS devices profoundly relies on AND/OR/Inverter logic. As the CMOS scaling is reaching its physical limits, researchers increase the effort to prolong the CMOS life. Also, it is necessary to investigate alternative devices, which in many cases implies the use of different basic logic operations. As the commercial synthesis tools are not able to handle these technologies efficiently, there is an opportunity to research alternative logic implementations better suited for these new devices. This thesis focuses on presenting efficient algorithms to design circuits in both CMOS and new technologies while integrating these algorithms into regular design flows. For this task, we apply the functional composition technique, to efficiently synthesize both CMOS and emerging technologies. The functional composition is a bottom-up synthesis approach, providing flexibility to implement algorithms with optimal or suboptimal results for different technologies. To investigate how the functional composition compares to the state-of-the-art synthesis methods, we propose to apply this synthesis paradigm into six different scenarios. Two of them focus on CMOS-based circuits, and other four are based on emerging technologies. Regarding CMOSbased circuits, we investigate functional composition to investigate multi-output factorization in a circuit resynthesis flow. Also, we manipulate approximate functions to synthesize approximate triple modular redundancy (ATMR) modules. Concerning emerging technologies, we explore functional composition over spin-diode circuits and other promising approaches based on different logic implementations: threshold logic, majority logic, and implication logic. Results present a considerable improvement over the state-of-the-art methods for both CMOS and emerging technologies applications, demonstrating the ability to handle different technologies and showing the possibility to improve technologies not explored yet.

"Life is What You Make It": African American Students' Self-Practices in Negotiating the Curriculum of a Majority-White High School

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: This study enters on the heels of a trend of public school closures across the United States. Using qualitative methods, the study concerns the curriculum experiences of six African American students attending a majority-white high school in a white, middle-class community in the Midwest, one year after the closure of their predominantly Black high school in their hometown. The study draws from Michel Foucault’s philosophy on care of the self as an analytical tool to look at students’ care of the ‘racialized’ self, or more specifically, how African American students are forming a ‘self’ in a majority-white school in relation to the ways they are being racialized. Background of the schools and a description of the conditions under which the school change occurred are provided for context. Data collection involved conducting life history interviews with students, observing students in their classes, and shadowing students throughout their school day. Findings show that African American student-participants are contending with what they describe as a “them”/“us” racial, cultural, and class divide that is operationalized through the curriculum. Students are in a struggle to negotiate how they are perceived and categorized as ‘racialized’ bodies through the curriculum, and, their own perceptions of these racializations. In this struggle, students enact self-practices to make maneuvers within curriculum spaces. A student can accept how the curriculum attempts to constitute her/him as a subject, resist this subjectification, or perform any combination of both accepting and resisting. In this way, a curriculum, with its distinctive and potentially polarizing boundaries, becomes a negotiated and contested space. And, because this curricular space is internally contradictory, a student, in relation to it, may practice versions of a ‘self’ (multiple ‘selves’) that are contradictory. Findings illuminate that in this complex process of self-making, African American students are producing a curriculum of self-formation that teaches others how they want to be perceived. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Curriculum and Instruction 2016

Marcelo Vieira von Adamek 22 March 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the exciting theme of minority abuse in the corporate law, of which many legal professionals have general empirical knowledge, extracted from their professional experience, but that, in the Brazilian law system, had not been the subject matter of a systematic analysis on the part of Brazilian law experts, that dedicated no more than some brief considerations to the theme, in spite of their undeniable importance and very rich experience accumulated in other countries, especially in France, Italy and Germany. Based on undeniable verifications that the minority, even if acting against a pre-established controlling group, exercises a true power and that, where there is power, there is always a possibility for degeneration and distortion of power, we sought to point out the assumptions characterizing minority abuse in the Brazilian corporate law, supported on inputs from comparative law. Actually, both the majority and the minority may exercise their rights abusively in a society, so that the study of the theme should not be understood as an attack on the position of minority groups, much on the contrary: only those who know the limitations of their powers are in a position to exercise them effectively, without fearing any reactions to their actions. Prepared under such perspective, this study is divided into five parts. The first of them, consisting of two chapters, intends to characterize minority abuse in corporate law analyzing for such, the several institutes employed by the doctrine in that task and defining their constitutive elements. In the second part, the author seeks to present the typology of minority abuse and its casuistry, highlighting situations that are most interesting or ordinary. The third part, in turn, discusses the delicate and intriguing problem of manners to repress minority abuses and possible contractual and statutory self-protection techniques. The fourth part brings brief considerations on the hypothesis, also very little explored in the doctrine, of equality abuse, that may get settled in societies where the voting capital is equally divided among shareholders and therefore, can only operate under the sign of unanimity. Finally, the fifth part presents the final considerations, with a summary of the main conclusions developed throughout the thesis.

Funtional composition and applications / Composição final e aplicações

Martins, Mayler Gama Alvarenga January 2012 (has links)
This work presents functional composition (FC) as a new paradigm for combinational logic synthesis. FC is a bottom-up approach to synthesize Boolean functions, being able to evaluate the cost of intermediate sub-functions, exploring a larger number of different candidate combinations. These are interesting advantages when compared to the top-down behavior of functional decomposition. FC presents great flexibility to implement algorithms with optimal or suboptimal results for different applications. The proposed strategy presents good results for the synthesis of Boolean functions targeting different technologies. FC is based on the following principles: (1) the representation of logic functions is done by a bonded pair of functional and structural representations; (2) the algorithm starts from a set of initial functions; (3) simpler functions are associated to create more complex ones; (4) there is a partial order, enabling dynamic programming; (5) a set of allowed functions can be used in order to reduce execution time/memory consumption. This work presents functional composition algorithms for Boolean factoring, including optimal factoring, Boolean factoring considering the exclusive-OR operator, minimum decision chain computation and synthesis of functions considering only majority and inverter logic gates.

Essays in Organizational Economics: Information Sharing and Organizational Behavior

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: One theoretical research topic in organizational economics is the information issues raised in different organizations. This has been extensively studied in last three decades. One common feature of these research is focusing on the asymmetric information among different agents within one organization. However, in reality, we usually face the following situation. A group of people within an organization are completely transparent to each other; however, their characters are not known by other organization members who are outside this group. In my dissertation, I try to study how this information sharing would affect the outcome of different organizations. I focus on two organizations: corporate board and political parties. I find that this information sharing may be detrimental for (some of) the members who shared information. This conclusion stands in contrast to the conventional wisdom in both corporate finance and political party literature. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Economics 2014

Partidos, facções e comportamento parlamentar na democracia de 46 / Parties, factions, and voting behavior in the Brazilian Second Republic (1946-1964)

Jaqueline Porto Zulini 16 December 2011 (has links)
Desta forma, o governo pôde calcular a melhor estratégia política capaz de lhe certificar a vitória em plenário, independentemente da ajuda dos opositores / The literature tells us that factionalism was the norm in the party system of the Brazils Second Republic (1946-1964). As a result of constant factions within parties, presidential coalitions in the legislature were primarily constructed ad hoc. The objective of this study was to investigate the origin of this argument by analyzing the behavior of legislators on roll call votes in the Chamber of Deputies between 1946 and 1964. The data used in this investigation challenge the conventional wisdom by showing that it was unusual for governing coalitions to need outside help to ensure the adoption of their agendas. Only in the administrations of Getúlio Vargas (1951-1954) and Juscelino Kubistchek (1956-1960) was the support of members of the opposition essential to the approval of government programs, with Vargas agenda being most dependent on this type of support. In general, presidents success arose from the strategic use of verification of quorum, a procedural rule that allowed both the government and the opposition to visualize the division of the forces in the legislature, minimizing Rikers (1962) information effect. Thus, the government could calculate the best political strategy able to ensure victory, independent of opposition support.

Postoje Romů v ČR k okolní společnosti, k lidem většinového etnika a k lidem s odlišnostmi / Attitudes of Roma in the Czech Republic towards the surrounding society, towards people of the majority ethnic group and towards people with differences

Švejdová Jandová, Markéta January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis was to describe the attitudes of Roma towards the majority ethnic group and towards people with various differences. I tried to map the attitudes of Roma towards the majority ethnic group, their social distance to them, whether and to what extent they experience conflicts with persons of other ethnic groups and different social groups and how they view otherness. I created the work in collaboration with researchers from the National Institute of Mental Health (NUDZ) on the project The Stranger as a Symbol of Otherness - How Personality Affects Our Attitudes. The experimental group of Roma people had 15 respondents, the control group 55 respondents. I conducted the research using a Bogardus scale and a conflict-oriented questionnaire, and I obtained average values for individual items from the answers. Due to the different size of the experimental and control groups, I also used the analysis of the Mann Whitney test to determine the significance of the difference between the observed groups. The results led me to the conclusion that the degree of social distance of the Roma towards the majority in comparison with the degree of social distance of the majority towards the Roma is statistically insignificant. Another finding was the overall higher degree of social...

Tichá revoluce. Proměna identity frankofonního Québecu. / Quiet revolution: Transformation of the Francophone Identity of Quebec

Denemark, Jan January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis is covering Québec's policy and Quebec's change of identity from the era of the Quiet revolution. This work covers the changes that were a crucial in the creation of Québec's policy and national identity. From the time of the Quiet revolution in the 60's of the 20th century the society in Québec came through a drastic identity change. And not only in the province itself but also in the whole country of Canada. Because of this change, Québec refused the Canadian policy of multiculturalism. Canadian official policy does not accept Québec as a distinct society and also refuses the principle of the two-nation Canada. Therefore, Québec created its own policy of integration called interculturalism. In the analysis of the development of identity and nationalism, the methodology is a critical examination of the empirical experiences of Québec and the theses of the theoretical concepts of Charles Taylor and Will Kymlicka. It was necessary to study Taylor's and Kymlicka's theses on multiculturalism, identity, communitarianism, and liberalism as a starting point for analyzing the development of Québec. It was important to formulate definitions of identity, nation, and multiculturalism, to determine the main categories of content, and to analyze the development of the Québec identity during...

Projects for Roma inclusion – a content analysis exploring empowerment and intersectionality within five projects

Johansson, Susanne January 2014 (has links)
Projects are a common method in the work of closing the gap between the majority society and the Roma people. As a national minority in Sweden, the Roma people are entitled to certain rights of participation within this work. This thesis aims to analyze five projects, meant to work towards the Roma people’s inclusion, to answer how the concepts of empowerment and intersectionality are expressed or implicitly embodied within them. It is also questioned how the projects have considered the Roma people’s perceptions of their own situation and context. By using content analysis together with the theoretical framework, it is possible to bring light to these concepts, as well as to find key variables in order to answer the research questions. The main findings show that while the projects lacked in using an intersectional approach, the concept has important analytical tools which could be helpful in order to include the vulnerable persons within the Roma groups and to work with more sensitive issues. Some levels of empowerment is also found in the projects, both as a goal and as a means. However, in order to empower the Roma people, the majority society would have to give more decision power to the group. Thus the projects have not reached the potential they could have had in contributing to the shift which has been set in motion towards letting the Roma people develop the perspective of the work as well as be part of the execution.
