Doctor of Philosophy / Department of History / Charles W. Sanders / Americans during the first half of the nineteenth-century were obsessed with expansion. God had bestowed upon them an innate superiority in nearly all things. American settlers were culturally, economically, racially and politically superior to all others. But how accurate are such statements? Did a majority of Americans support such declarations? The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how Americans wrote and read about expansion. Doing so reveals that for every citizen extolling the unique greatness of Americans, one questioned such an assumption. For every American insisting that the nation must expand to the Pacific coast to be successful there was one who disdained expansion and sought to industrialize what territory the nation already possessed. Americans during the first half of the nineteenth century were of many minds about expansion. The destiny of the United States was anything but manifest. Using a wealth of nineteenth century newspapers this dissertation demonstrates that the concept of Manifest Destiny was far less popular than previously imagined. Newspapers were the primary source of information and their contents endlessly debated. Editors from around the country expressed their own views and eagerly published pertinent letters to the editor that further detailed how Americans perceived expansion. While many people have often read John O’Sullivan’s rousing words he was not necessarily indicative of American sentiment. For every article espousing the importance of acquiring Florida to deny it to the British there was one deriding the notion because they felt Florida to be nothing but a worthless swamp filled with hostile Indians. American justification and opposition to territorial expansion followed no grand strategy. Instead, its most fascinating characteristic was its dynamic nature. In the Southwest expansionist proponents argued that annexation would liberate the land from Papist masters, while opponents questioned the morality of such a conquest. Encouraging or discouraging territorial expansion could take on innumerable variations and it is this flexible rhetoric that the dissertation focuses upon. The debate that raged in the public forum over expansion was both heated and fascinating. The voices of both pro and anti-expansionists were crucial to the development of antebellum America.

Varje år drabbas ett stort antal människor av demenssjukdom och det förväntas öka i framtiden, vilket kommer leda till ett ökat behov av vårdinsatser. På grund av att personer med demenssjukdom kräver mycket omvårdnad leder det till att anhöriga får ta ett stort ansvar, vilket vid försämring i sjukdomen ofta leder till att personen med demenssjukdom behöver flytta in på boende. Syftet med studien var att beskriva upplevelsen av att vara anhörig till en person med demenssjukdom som bor på vård-och omsorgsboende. En systematisk litteratursökning utfördes där 14 artiklar som svarade på syftet analyserades med kvalitativ manifest innehållsanalys med induktiv ansats vilket resulterade i fem kategorier: Skuldkänslor och sorg efter närståendes flytt; en bra relation med personalen; god kommunikation och information; en stimulerande omgivning på boendet samt förändrad relation efter närståendes flytt. Resultatet diskuteradesutifrån hur anhöriga kan få stöd med och att sjuksköterskan behöver upprätta en god relation med anhöriga där stöd och information är av vikt. Slutsatsen visar vikten av att sjuksköterskor prioriterar och planerar sitt arbete på ett sätt som ger förutsättningar för en god kommunikation med anhöriga och att det är viktigt att involvera både patienten och anhöriga, samt att kunskap om anhörigas upplevelser ger möjlighet för sjuksköterskan att se deras främsta behov

<p>Cancer upplevs ofta som en hotfull och farlig sjukdom. Många människor som har haft cancer drabbas även senare i livet av ett återinsjuknande. Vårdpersonals kunskap om upplevelser av att drabbas av ett återinsjuknande är otillräckliga, vilket leder till att människor i dessa situationer inte får adekvat stöd och hjälp. Syftet med examensarbetet var att belysa människors upplevelser av att återinsjukna i cancer. Fyra stycken självbiografier analyserades utifrån en kvalitativ manifest innehållsanalys med en induktiv ansats. Analysen resulterade i tre kategorier: viljan att leva, upplevelsen av lidande och upplevelsen av att vilja ge upp. Huvudfynden som framträdde var att de upplevde en rädsla inför döden, en själslig smärta och en upplevelse av kaos, vilka uttrycktes genom en upplevelse av lidande. Hopplöshet, oförståelse och förtvivlan var även framträdande upplevelser. En del upplevelser genomsyrades av en stark livsvilja, livskraft och en positiv inställning vilket visade att de ville fortsätta kämpa för att överleva. Det är betydelsefullt att sjuksköterskor tar de som återinsjuknat på största allvar för att de inte ska behöva lida i det tysta. Dessa människor måste uppmärksammas mer och omvårdnaden måste förbättras så att deras behov tillfredställs och att deras livskvalitet stärks.</p> / <p>Cancer is often perceived as a threatful and dangerous disease. A lot of people with a history of cancer also suffer a relapse later in their life. Nursing staff’s knowledge of experiences of being affected by a relapse is insufficient, resulting in that people in these situations do not receive adequate support and assistance. The aim of this Bachelor thesis was to illuminate people’s experiences of a cancer relapse. Four autobiographies were analyzed from a qualitative manifest content analysis with an inductive approach. The analysis resulted in three categories: the will to live, the experience of suffering and the experience of the desire to give up. The main findings were that they experienced a fear of death, a mental pain and an experience of chaos, which were expressed through an experience of suffering. Hopelessness, incomprehension and despair were also prominent experiences. A number of experiences were permeated by a strong will to live, vitality and a positive attitude which showed that they wanted to continue the struggle to survive. It is important that nurses take patients who relapse seriously, because these patients should not have to suffer in silence. These people require more attention and the nursing care must be improved so their needs are satisfied and the quality of life is strengthened.</p>

When creating a current work, artists cannot ignore the images that have preceded theirs. The history of a medium and the related history of subject matter is vital to the meaning of a new art work. Each sign and symbol has a connotation out of the artists’ control. The developed meaning of a symbol is inseparable for the viewer regardless of the acknowledgment of that meaning by the artist. To work with imagery and not address it’s historical context is to perpetuate it’s meaning. The only way to not state what has already been stated is to critically engage with the preexisting meaning of the imagery. An artist can combine symbols to create dual meanings or juxtapositions of meaning, or present the imagery in a way that complicates what it already signifies. “Apparent Fate,”my combined negative, photographic mural, uses imagery from Yosemite National Park to comment on photography’s function or purpose in history and in the current economic, political, environmental, and social conditions in California and society’s current stance on Manifest Destiny. How have the ideas of innate rights over people and places changed over time in American culture?

This study dealt with the effect of low-level noise and high-level noise, of white noise and varied noise, and of high manifest anxiety and low manifest anxiety on college students' performance on a coding task. The conclusions of the study, based upon the hypotheses, were as follows: 1. Level of anxiety does not affect performance on a coding task. 2. The level of white and level of varied noise does not affect performance on a coding task. 3. Varied noise has a positive effect on performance on a coding task.

This work is focused on developing of own proposals and recommendations for future growth of agile approach in selected company, based on description and analysis of existing procedures in this company. There is basic characteristic of selected company, general and specific description in case study after study of theoretical basis. Agile procedures are compared to principles of agile manifesto and Scrum method in conclusion of the case study. There are identified shortcomings of procedures in agile project management of selected company based on this comparison. For mitigation, or elimination of these shortcomings, there are presented and discussed own proposals and recommendations for future growth of agile approach in selected company.
