Living on the slippery slope : the nature, sources and logic of vagueness

Zardini, Elia January 2008 (has links)
According to the dominant approach in the theory of vagueness, the nature of the vagueness of an expression ‘F’ consists in its presenting borderline cases in an appropriately ordered series: objects which are neither definitely F nor definitely not F (where the notion of definiteness can be semantic, ontic, epistemic, psychological or primitive). In view of the various problems faced by theories of vagueness adopting the dominant approach, the thesis proposes to reconsider the naive theory of vagueness, according to which the nature of the vagueness of an expression consists in its not drawing boundaries between any neighbouring objects in an appropriately ordered series. It is argued that expressions and concepts which do present this feature play an essential role in our cognitive and practical life, allowing us to conceptualize—in a way which would otherwise be impossible—the typically coarse-grained distinctions we encounter in reality. Despite its strong initial plausibility and ability to explain many phenomena of vagueness, the naive theory is widely rejected because thought to be shown inconsistent by the sorites paradox. In reply, it is first argued that accounts of vagueness based on the dominant approach are themselves subject to higher-order sorites paradoxes. The paradox is then solved on behalf of the naive theory by rejecting the unrestricted transitivity of the consequence relation on a vague language; a family of logics apt for reasoning with vague expressions is proposed and studied (using models with partially ordered values). The characteristic philosophical and logical consequences of this novel solution are developed and defended in detail. In particular, it is shown how the analysis of what happens in the attempt of surveying a sorites series and deciding each case allows the naive theory to recover a "thin" notion of a borderline case.

South Africans commemorating in Poland: Making meaning through participation

Low, Carol 20 May 2008 (has links)
This research report focuses on the issues for participation in public memory projects, in the light of counter-monument critiques of audiences being ‘rendered passive’. Interviews with people who went on the 2005 March of the Living tour to Holocaust sites in Poland and then to Israel have been analysed in terms of themes and processes of meaningmaking. The written text of some of the material provided to them is also analysed. Meanings in the interviews notably occupied two discursive spaces that seem at odds with each other. The first was the discourse around what is a good way to memorialise – particularly when the memory is one of such enormity as the Holocaust. The second is the discourse around tolerance education – how do we ‘learn lessons’ from the Holocaust? The issues for heritage interpretation and tolerance education are explored.

Colonial, since it develops itself in atrophy, not completely, keeping and reinforcing Brazil as an subaltern bond of the imperialism. Considering the particularity of each author, I remark the works of Caio Prado Jr., Francisco Oliveira, Florestan Fernandes, José Chasin, Octavio Ianni e Maurício Tragtenberg as fundamentals in the marxist formulation of the Brazilian thoughts. The current work starts from The Brazilian March to West, searching our historical particularity. Moved by a late industrialization of the country, the myth of development takes violently all Brazilian people to be submitted to this cause, while the profits pass to be concentrated, even more, in the hands of farmers, national and international dealers. The domination of value of change by the value of use, contradictory present in the products of capitalist civilization, together with the transformation of lands to capital- private property, reaches the limits of Parque Indígena do Xingu (MT) and, slowly, charmingly penetrates the daily life of the aldeias. Considering the studies made since 1965 by the anthropologist Carmen Junqueira, this work intends to critically analyze the arriving of the goods with its values and of the capital-social relation in the aldeia Kamaiurá from Ipavu, analyzing the way the sociability of capital breaks up the existing collectivity, besides pointing out the arrangements and adjustments made by the Kamaiurá when facing the destructive process of our colonial capitalism. This work, contemporary to the capital s crisis era, searches to confront the Brazilian reality without loosing its human horizon, ontological. At last, it defends that the Kamaiurá s way of life, anchored in the collective element of their land, may be put, humanly, against the capital and open, consciously, free paths among the rubble of the amplified production and reproduction of life under the capital / Em nosso processo de transição ao modo de produção e reprodução do capital através de uma via colonial, forjamos um capitalismo particular nos trópicos.

Rosa, Poliana Aparecida Leonel. January 2017 (has links)
O m... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Mestre

Étude de la réponse inflammatoire cutanée dans le mélanome et la marche atopique / Skin inflammatory responses in cutaneous melanoma and in the atopic march

Yao, Wenjin 25 September 2018 (has links)
My PhD thesis aimed at studying skin inflammatory responses under two pathogenic contexts, melanoma and atopic march. In the first part, we studied the role of keratinocyte-produced cytokine TSLP in melanomagenesis. We showed that TSLP expression was induced in skin epidermis of both mouse and human melanoma. We further provided evidence that TSLP played a tumor-promoting role by ablating or overexpressing TSLP in mouse melanoma, and that such role of TSLP was mediated through immune cells. Our results suggest that a crosstalk between melanoma cells, epidermal keratinocytes and immune cells plays an important role for melanoma growth and metastasis. In the second part, we explored the cytokine factors derived from atopic dermatitis (AD) in driving the asthma. By using an innovative laser-assistant microporation system, we established novel atopic march mouse models. We found that TSLP was differentially implicated in allergen epicutaneous or dermacutaneous sensitization, and further identified IL-1β as an important player in atopic march. This study adds new insight into the development of potential strategies for preventing or stopping the atopic march.

Discovery and characterization of a novel family of human ubiquitin ligases termed Membrane Associated RING-CH (MARCH) proteins

Bartee, Eric Carter 06 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Ph.D. / Molecular Microbiology and Immunology / Both poxviruses and γ2-herpesviruses share the K3-family of viral immune evasion proteins. These proteins are characterized by an amino-terminal RING-CH domain followed by two transmembrane domains. We analyzed several human homologues of the K3-family termed membrane-associated RING-CH (MARCH) proteins. All MARCH proteins localized to subcellular membranes while several reduced surface levels of known K3-family substrates. Thus, MARCH proteins appear to be structurally and functionally homologous to viral K3 proteins. One of the major challenges in determining the function of this family is the identification of their physiological substrates. To overcome this we created a quantitative proteomics approach which can be used to identify novel substrates for both the K3- and MARCH-families. Using stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture, we compared the proteome of plasma membrane, golgi, and endoplasmic reticulum membranes in the presence and absence of K5 and MARCH-VIII. Quantitative mass spectrometric protein identification from these fractions revealed that CD316 (bone marrow stromal antigen 2), CD166 (activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule) and syntaxin-4 were consistently underrepresented in the plasma membrane of K5 expressing cells, while CD44, CD81 (TAPA-1) and B-cell receptor-associated protein 31kDa (Bap31) were consistently underrepresented in the plasma membrane of MARCH-VIII expressing cells. Furthermore, downregulation of each of these proteins was independently confirmed. Our results both identify and characterize a novel family of human ubiquitin ligase enzymes and elucidate a novel technique which can analyze this family and be easily adapted to the analysis of other cellular enzymes viral immune modulators.

It's Not A Parade, It's A March!: Subjectivities, Spectatorship, and Contested Spaces of the Toronto Dyke March

Burgess, Allison H. F. 05 January 2012 (has links)
In this thesis I address the following questions: (1) How do dykes take up space in public in contemporary cities? (2) How does the ‘marching dyke’ emerge as a subject and what kind of subject is it? (3) How, in turn, do marching dykes affect space? In order to examine these questions I focus on the Toronto Dyke March to ask how it emerged in this particular time and place. The answer to each of these questions is paradoxical. I argue that the Dyke March is a complex, complicated and contradictory site of politics, protest and identity. Investigating ‘marching dykes’ reveals how the subject of the Dyke March is imagined in multiple and conflicting ways. The Toronto Dyke March is an event which brings together thousands of queer women annually who march together in the streets of Toronto on the Saturday afternoon of Pride weekend. My research examines how the March emerged out of a history of activism and organizing and considers how the March has been made meaningful for queer women’s communities, identities, histories and spaces. My analysis draws together queer and feminist poststructuralism, cultural geography literature on sexuality and space, and the history of sexuality in Canada. I combine a Foucaultian genealogy with visual ethnography, interviews and archival research. I argue that the Dyke March is an event which is intentionally meaningful in its claims to particular spaces and subjectivities. This research draws connections across various bodies of scholarship and offers an interdisciplinary contribution to the literature, contributing to discussions of queer women’s visibility and representation. Although my analysis is focused on Toronto as a particular site, it offers insight into broader queer women’s activist organizing efforts and queer activism in Canada.
