From The taming of the shrew to Kiss me Kate : the changing fortunes of Katherine, the shrew

Edgar, Patricia January 1976 (has links)
William Shakespeare's play, The Taming of the Shrew has a varied and interesting stage history. Beginning with Fletcher's The Tamer Tarn'd (1633), a sequel to Shakespeare, there have been many adaptations of the plot in farce, opera and poetic drama, including an American musical comedy. This thesis will follow the stage history of The Taming of the Shrew, focussing on the dramatic development and treatment of the heroine, Katherine. Shakespeare's shrew, Katherine, is much more than a traditional shrew stereotype. Her dramatic presentation in language and action has enough depth and subtlety to provoke much conflicting criticism and interpretation. What motivates her anger? Why is she physically abusive? Is she subdued, tamed or reeducated? Enough clues are present in the play to provide for interesting debate. The first part of the thesis is concerned with examining Shakespeare's dramatic concept of the shrew to establish the scope and range of Katherine's personality and her response to Petruchio's taming tricks. In later versions of the play, the character of Katherine receives a variety of dramatic treatments. Some playwrights reduce Katherine's dramatic function to a mere outline. Others accentuate her physically abusive and sharp-tongued qualities. Yet another variation is a softening of the shrewish disposition to allow for a sentimental treatment of shrew conditioning. The dramatic vigour of the shrew character is constant, but variations in plot, language and thematic idea result in very different and entertaining shrew types. This stage history of The Taming of the Shrew as it relates to the heroine, Katherine, includes an analysis of the following plays. The Tamer Tarn'd (1633), a sequel by John Fletcher serves to comment on Shakespeare's Kate by direct allusion and by dramatic contrast. Sauny the Scot (1667) is a bastardised Restoration version in which the shrew is a farcical stereotype who must suffer extensive physical humiliation for her excessive displays of nastiness. Catherine and Petruohio (1756) is David Garrick's miniature version of Shakespeare which stresses the farce, simplifying the play and the dramatic impact of Catherine. John Tobin's The Honeymoon (1805) is a poetic attempt to re-create The Shrew. The heroine in this play suffers the sin of pride, but is won over to domesticity and humility by love and rural surroundings provided by a gentle tamer. The thesis also considers the nineteenth century attempts to revive the Shakespeare original which struggled unsuccessfully with the popularity of the Garrick version. Some of the musical adaptations of The Shrew provide a rich variety of shrew heroines in very different settings. Included are a ballad opera, A Cure for a Scold (1735), a German opera by Hermann Goetz, The Taming of the Shrew (1878), and a modern musical comedy version, Kiss Me Kate (1948). These adaptations and variant versions provide a veritable school of Katherines. The streak of genius in Shakespeare's dramatic idea of a shrew, who, even in the realm of farce is seen as a human being with the capacity to feel, change and grow, becomes very strongly apparent as Shakespeare's Kate is measured against the shrew heroines in these derivative plays. The contrasting shrew types, though interesting and pleasing in their own way, never quite acquire the stature, poise, wit, intelligence and humour which characterise Shakespeare's attractive Kate. For Kate's civilising and learning encounter with Petruchio is not the brutalising, punitive or subjugating ritual of tradition; amidst the slapstick of farce, Kate, with her Petruchio, provides a unique variation of the shrew heroine. She is not conquered. She changes herself. This is her distinction and her strength and the mark of Shakespeare's human touch. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Lokalizace pomocí aplikace určené pro platformu Java ME využívající GPS / GPS based Localization using the Java ME application

Figurny, Radek January 2009 (has links)
The task of the Master's thesis has been to develop the MIDlet, which is able to receive data from an external GPS module via Bluetooth. Data are received in the NMEA 0183 format and are processed to extract longitude, latitude, elevation, velocity, number of visible satellites and measurement accuracy of longitude, latitude and elevation. Users have a possibility to save their actual location with a short description to the cell phone’s memory. The MIDlet is also able to save a user defined way-point and navigate to this way-point. The MIDlet itself was developed in the Netbeans IDE with a software development kit (SDK) made by Nokia company. This kit is designed for the Symbian OS s60 3rd edition FP1, which contains a s60 emulator and a s60 MIDlet for a direct compilation in the cell phone. The MIDlet is made of three main parts. The first part shows a longitude, latitude, elevation, velocity, longitude and latitude measurement accuracy, date and time. The second one shows a direction of north, latitude and longitude. The last one shows a direction to the selected way-point and a distance to this location. In theoretic part of the thesis there are described the GPS navigation system, Bluetooth system, geodetic system WGS 84 and programing language Java and its part Java ME.

Vliv sucha na metabolismus rostlin tabáku / Effect of drought on the metabolism of tobacco plants

Miedzińska, Lucia January 2010 (has links)
EEffffeecctt ooff ddrroouugghhtt oonn tthhee mmeettaabboolliissmm ooff ttaabbaaccccoo ppllaannttss (Nicotiana tabacum L.) Diploma thesis - abstract Lucia Miedzińska, Bc. Work Supervisor: Doc. RNDr. Helena Ryšlavá, CSc. Consultant: RNDr. Veronika Doubnerová, PhD. Drought stress is one of the most frequent form of plant stress, which occurs not only under condition of limited water availability, but also under reduced ability to accept water by roots, for example in salted or cold soils. In this thesis the changes in enzyme activities of: NADP-malic enzyme (EC 1.1.1.40; NADP-ME), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.31; PEPC) and pyruvate, phosphate dikinase (EC 2.7.9.1; PPDK) in tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum L., cv. W38) after drought were investigated. Enzyme activities in tobacco leaves were significantly increased during 11 days of stress, PEPC 2-fold, PPDK 3,3- fold and NADP-ME 4-fold compared to control plants. The regulation of NADP-ME and PEPC activities were studied on transcriptional level - by the real-time PCR method and on translational level - immunochemically. The expression of NADP-ME protein and transcription of mRNA for chloroplast NADP-ME isoform were increased, but mRNA for cytosolic isoform was not affected. The protein expression of PEPC was slightly increased, transcription of...

Investigating Brain Tissue Microstructure using Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Metere, Riccardo 14 May 2018 (has links)
In recent years there has been a considerable research effort in improving the specificity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques by employing quantitative methods. These methods offer greater reproducibility over traditional acquisitions, and hold the potential for obtaining improved information at the microstructural level. However, they typically require a longer duration for the experiments as the quantitative information is often obtained from multiple acquisitions. Here, a multi-echo extension of the MP2RAGE pulse sequence for the simultaneous mapping of T1, T2* (and magnetic susceptibility) is introduced, optimized and validated. This acquisition technique can be faster than the separate acquisition of T1 and T2*, and has the advantage of producing intrinsically co-localized maps. This is helpful in reducing the preprocessing complexity, but most importantly it removes the need for image alignment (registration) which is shown to introduce significant bias in quantitative MRI maps. One of the reasons why the knowledge of T1 and T2* is of relevance in neuroscience is because their reciprocal, R1 and R2*, have been shown to predict quantitatively myelin and iron content in ex vivo experiments using a linear model of relaxation. However, the post-mortem results cannot be applied directly to the in vivo case. Therefore, an adaptation of the linear relaxation model to the in vivo case is proposed. This is capable of predicting (with some limitations) the myelin and iron contents of the brain under in vivo conditions, by using prior knowledge from the literature to calibrate the linear coefficients. The dependence of the relaxation parameters from the biochemical composition in brain tissues is further explored with ex vivo experiments. In particular, the hyaluronan component of the extracellular matrix is investigated. The contribution to T1 and T2* is measured with a sophisticated experiments that allow for a greater control over experimental conditions compared to a typical MRI experiment. The result indicate a small but appreciable contribution of hyaluronan to the relaxation parameters. In conclusion, this work develops a method for measuring T1 and T2* maps simultaneously. These are then used to quantify myelin and iron under in vivo conditions using a linear model of relaxation. In parallel, the hyaluronan-based extracellular matrix was shown to be a marginal but measurable component in T1 and T2* relaxation maps in ex vivo experiments.

Vliv složení kultivačního média na metabolismus rostlin tabáku / Influence of cultivation medium composition on metabolism of tobacco plants

Minářů, Kateřina January 2010 (has links)
Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.31; PEPC) plays many roles in plants; it connects the metabolism of saccharides and amino acids. PEPC is regulated at many levels including phosphorylation of serine residue near N-terminus. The aim was to found out, if the composition of cultivation medium affects the activity of PEPC and metabolically related enzymes such as NADP-malic enzyme (EC 1.1.1.40), pyruvate, phosphate dikinase (EC 2.7.9.1; PPDK) and enzymes participating in nitrogen assimilation, thus nitrate reductase (EC 1.7.1.1; NR), glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2; GS), glutamate synthase (EC 1.4.1.14; GOGAT), NAD-glutamate dehydrogenase (1.4.1.2; NAD-GDH) and NADP-glutamate dehydrogenase (1.4.1.4; NADP-GDH). Tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum L., cv. Petit Havana SR1) were grown in vitro in Murashige-Skoog agar. The effect of the presence of 2% succrose, reduced content of nitrogen compounds or phosphate and limited supply of CO2 was followed. Sucrose added to Murashige-Skoog medium caused the increase of enzyme activity of PEPC, NADP-ME and most of enzymes related to nitrogen uptake and metabolism - NR, GS, GOGAT, NAD-GDH a NADP-GDH. Reduced content of nitrogen compounds and phosphate in cultivation medium decreased activity of all monitored enzymes. Enzyme activities were also affected by the...

Gillette - What can a man be? Kvalitativ semiotisk analys av Gillettes reklamfilm

Kallin, Maya January 2020 (has links)
I den här studien analyseras företaget Gillettes visualisering av maskuliniteter i deras reklamfilm We Believe: The best men can be. Istället visualiseras två olika former av maskuliniteter i reklamfilmen We Believe: The best men can be. Den första är en toxisk maskulinitet som Gillette tar avstånd från. Den andra är en traditionell hegemonisk maskulinitet, som bygger mycket på att en man ska beskydda och vara en förebild.
