Drop Dead Gorg(on)eous : A Multimodal Discourse Analysis of the Contemporary Medusa Tattoo / Drop dead gorg(on)eous : en multimodal diskursanalys av den samtida Medusatatueringen

Edling, Emma January 2024 (has links)
This thesis investigates the phenomenon of the contemporary ‘Medusa tattoo’ that gained traction on the social media platform TikTok in 2019 as a symbol of sexual assault survival, and which has since come to function as an instrument for digital feminist activism. The study aspires to provide a new, previously unexplored link to the long chain of academic research on the figure of Medusa by looking at the emergence, function, and potential of the Medusa tattoo. It makes use of multimodal discourse analysis followed by the application of a select number of theoretical frameworks by Hans Belting, Michael Baxandall, Roland Barthes, and Hélène Cixous. It is observed that historical representations of Medusa tend to draw upon her dualistic, transformative nature of beauty-monster, threat-victim, and powerful-powerless, in accordance with dominant thoughts and ideologies. The contemporary Medusa tattoo is identified as being comprised of a tripartite structure with three carrier mediums: the tattooed body, tattoo designs, and TikTok videos found under the hashtag #medusatattoo, all capable of acting both independently and intermediary. This form is a result of a decades-long process of thought influenced by various appearing and re-appearing factors, conditions, and agents. The thesis further identifies the ways that the Medusa tattoo functions as myth in accordance with the writings of Roland Barthes, its meaning becoming fixed through acts of repetition on social media. Lastly, it is concluded that while tattoos can act in accordance with Hélène Cixous’ concept of écriture féminine, the contemporary Medusa tattoo cannot, due to its iconography demonstrating postfeminist attitudes towards beauty and femininity that enforce instead of challenge patriarchal structures. However, it is noted that it retains its potential as a symbol of strength and healing on the individual wearer.

Les figures mythiques de la pétrification dans la littérature fin de siècle : désir d’un regard et regard d’un désir / Mythical figures of petrification in late 19th century literature : desire for looks and looks of desire

Daniel, Audrey 24 October 2009 (has links)
Emerging from a mythical past into late 19th century texts, Gorgon Medusa and related figures of petrification embody the anguish and fantasies of a period characterised by an acute crisis in values and representations. The mortiferous seduction of these archaic feminine entities is all the more fascinating to late century imagination since anyone approaching them cannot but run the risk of becoming blind. At the same time, these imaginary female figures constitute an invite to transgression which is hard to renounce, since ideal objects can only be dead. The petrification that comes as a consequence of this transgressive desire also symbolises the ideals to which art aspires, for it suspends desire and keeps it perfect. Paradoxically, staging desire thus enables late 19th century writers to challenge the leading values of their times while vindicating the ambiguity of their own behaviour towards feminine figures whose idealisation is tantamount to sacrifice.

Venus in the 'Looking-glass' : para-classicism and the trans-body in the works of Igor Mitoraj and Marc Quinn

Sliwinska, Basia January 2010 (has links)
This thesis offers a theoretical investigation into concepts of beauty, the sculptured body and myths of Venus and Medusa, primarily through the works of Igor Mitoraj and Marc Quinn. These themes are transformed and inverted in the Looking-glass towards the trans-body, which is fragmented, sometimes monstrous, grotesque or ugly, but it is still complete. Resonating with Eros, it advocates a new trans-sexuality and establishes a concept of new desire , both of which question the legitimacy and limits of the concept of gender in relation to the body. This thesis proposes looking at the body beyond straightforward associations with a particular sex, incorporating approaches beyond art historical and art critical perspectives. Overall, the argument is informed by three particular concepts - paratopisms, paralogisms and parachronisms - drawn from the writings of Jean-François Lyotard. Jean Baudrillard s idea of the trans and swallowing the mirror provides another focus for the thesis. As such, this work is an attempt to go through to the other side of the mirror with respect to topos here, aesthetics and narratives; logos here, beauty and ugliness; and chronos in this research, the new desire. Through a detailed analysis of a number of case-studies I focus on the transformation of the trope of the classical into para-classical; the implosion of Venus into Medusa, beauty into ugliness, perfection into imperfection and ability into disability; and, finally, the metamorphosis of the sculptured body in the mirror. The figure of Venus is utilised in order to scrutinise the modifications and metamorphoses, both internal and external, of the body in relation to the fragment and the classical Greco-Roman ideal. The thesis aims to bring to the study of sculpture a deconstruction of the body through readings on gender, subjectivities and the gaze of the other. It focuses on the female body, represented by the figure of Venus, which is modified and appropriated according to patriarchal order, but also, as it relies on Hélène Cixous's Medusa laugh, it generates a new perspective in seeing the body as a hybrid; a metamorphosing construct, able to transform beyond and within corporeality. Viewing the body as an entity in a constant state of flux, shifting identities and gender, this study proposes this new concept - trans-body as a response to the current hyperreal simulated model of sexuality, and stimulates (and simulates) a change of focus in opticality towards illusions and trans-vesting myths.

Molina Olivares, Mario Esteban January 2009 (has links)

Vaattovaara, Filip January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines whether traditional air power theory complements counterinsurgency air power theory in kinetic counterinsurgency operations. The reason being that there is some discrepancy in the theories of how air power can be used in counterinsurgency. Winning a revolutionary war requires a graduated spectrum of violence; whereas, traditionally air power is characterized as only using the kinetic, hard power, end of that spectrum. The purpose is to test Robert Pape’s air power theory of military coercion by denial, motivated by the theory’s agreement with current research of air power in counterinsurgency. This thesis is a comparative case study examining two, similar and successful counterinsurgency operations, Operation Anaconda and Operation Medusa. Findings show that denial is quite prominent when direct support of ground forces occurs; whereas operational and strategic interdiction indicate low or no occurrence. This study strengthens the theory’s applicatory power in a counterinsurgency context, and suggests it can complement current research on counterinsurgency air power in kinetic usage.

Galvan, Victor Gabriel 22 November 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This paper presents the obtaining of electric power consumption curves, from the responses generated by an embedded low-cost Raspberry Pi 2 Model B system running the Linux operating system Raspbian working as a remote access server SSH, which is assessed through different types of access and brute force attacks dictionaries through specialized tools Medusa and Hydra, as well as the tool Metasploit unspecialized. The energy behavior is interpreted by a current consumption measurement system developed by low embedded platform cost Arduino Uno that runs a current sensor based on ACS721ELC-5A Hall effect chip, which has the ability to collect the variations generated by the platform test in response to events produced by the proposed test scenarios, the data is processed by the framework Matlab that collects, parses and normalizes using the Welch method, the current signal which is interpreted by Arduino Uno subsequently presents a standard curve It features a particular event based on scenarios of evidence. The results show the different curves standard patterns, and contextualized on the types of scenarios evaluated subsequently presents a theoretical mathematical model of the proposed power consumption, as well as rules or signatures proposed to identify an attack using the detection method of standards used IDS Snort. These current curves facilitate understanding and obtaining a pattern of current consumption for each access and attack the embedded platform.
